Since people are slowly forgetting about the Harkness test (especially the new generation on TikTok) here is a reminder on what it is and why it’s important
This was made all the way back in 2013 so this has been around longer than most kids
Basically if the creature has human intelligence, can communicate properly, and is mature for its species age you can consent to any adult practices with it

If I had a nickel for every time there was a middle-aged, tatted, Australian criminal who looks like he's homeless yet he's jacked as shit, has sideburns, is an alcoholic and has a knack for pissing everywhere; I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice...
The only difference bein' Kano over here has massive muscle bear energy and Digger looks like an old man who never moved on from his twink death.
I fuckin' love this crack ship, I just know they would fuck nasty.

'But Merrill needs someone to tell her how far she's fallen' nah bud, everyone in the world including her mother-figure and the actively possessed mage of the group are telling her she's an idiot or she's wrong or she doesn't understand what she's doing. She has literally nobody in the world on her side, why would she need a sixty-fourth person telling her how she's wrong for taking her grief and trying to turn it into something to help her people? Maybe the real right thing to do for her is to offer the support system she so clearly has been robbed of? Just a thought.

How would the Jack Harkness test apply to the DnD world?
Do you know the Jack Harkness test of consent within a fantasy or scifi world? (Sadly I have no idea who made the graphic, so if you know, please tell so I can give credit)
Basically it is saying that in a fantasy world you should only consider a creature as able to consent (so hence free to fuck if they do), if they....
Have human intelligence or greater
Can communicate somehow with clear language (and be it through telepathic communication)
Are considered mature for their species
But boy, in DnD it gets messy quickly, right? I mean, sure, we do have the sentient species running around. But even there we do have some that are usually considered to be less intelligent than humans. (Like goblins.) So, uhm, can you fuck them?
And I mean, fucking the different types of furries running around seems to be fair game, if you ask me. Dragons, too, probably, given they are also of human intelligence and all that.
Fucking a druid in wildshape (yeah, I see you there, Halsin) also looks like it should be fine.
But what about some of the monsters? Some do have... at least some intelligence - enough to consent I would argue. Like, enough to somewhat understand consequences at least.
And then... there is the matter of animal speech.
Yes, a friend and I talked way too long about this yesterday. But... If I cast animal speech in DnD (as also seen in Baldur's Gate) you can have proper and full conversations with all the critters running around. And while the gameworld makes a big deal about not considering them sentient... I mean, the dialogues sound very much like they are sentient to me. So, uhm... If I can talk to an animal and the animal consents...
You get where I am going, right?
And I mean, while I laughed a bit about bear Halsin, this is all not my cuppa tea. But... I cannot help but wonder.
Especially when you also think that bear Halsin once got forced by a she-bear to mate. But you will most certainly not say he had abused that she-bear, right?
It is so complicated.
Also note that within the world elves do reach physical maturity in their 20s - but are not considered mentally adults until they reach a hundred years.

the thing about detective dee and the mystery of the phantom flame (2010) that’s SO interesting to me is how it so clearly sets up a series of prequels. the ending of the film is next to impossible to follow with a sequel, even though it can be done, but the film’s overwhelming emphasis on the old alliances, old betrayals, and old stories that shape the (very compelling!) relationships between the characters leaves the audience begging for a prequel, or several prequels. and i think it’s pretty clear why. the three main characters of phantom flame are played by well-loved hong kong actors of the old generation—andy lau, carina lau, and tony leung ka-fai—and with the sole exception of carina lau they are all recast by actors of the new generation in the prequels. this series is a passing-the-torch series, like the painted skin series, but unlike that series this film seems to deliberately set up that transition, and it really fascinates me
