Grace carefully considered the sky, kept her eyes trained there. There or on the dying plants, or the murky reflection pools, looking everywhere except at her companion. There wasn't much to see, just a grim blanket of gray sky and fading foliage, leaves carried and tumbled about in the light wind. The wind chilled her even through the coat and tightly wrapped scarf, but she didn't mind that. Grace was only grateful it wasn't raining.

"The sister…" Campbell mused, continuing his oration, something Grace had responded to thus far with mere nods and hums. "She was at the museum. Got in a scuffle directly after."

Grace had fallen a few steps behind the inspector, losing herself in the hazy reflection in the fountain's still water. She was listening, but found herself lost in other thoughts.

Grace had met Campbell when she was little more than a child, long before she became an orphan or an operative, a barmaid, or a hired girl or a tutor. She supposed the relationship with Chester Campbell and her role as an operative were the only true things she held in her life any longer, the only bits left of her true self, the true Grace Burgess, but the meetings had begun to give her an odd feeling in the pit of her stomach. The visage reflected in the pool wasn't the Grace Burgess she had once been. This Grace lived a much different life from that of the girl Campbell knew, the girl Grace recognized.

It was actually more the tutoring than anything else that distracted her thoughts as of late, keeping her up to devise lesson plans and write out assignments, occupying her mind when she was meant to be relaying mission updates and discussing strategy. The tutoring and the girl were an integral part of the mission now though, so the distraction could be dismissed. As for the sleep, she had taken to staying up late anyhow. This new Grace didn't find reprieve quite so easily.

There were moments when she forgot why she came to Birmingham in the first place, forgot why she gave up her home in Ireland to live in a dingy room and she supposed that kept the sleep at bay a bit too, the loss of what mattered. She still held to the idea of this being about her father, even if her mission now began and ended with Thomas Shelby, omitting completely the IRA. It was the moments when she remembered that she wasn't in Birmingham for her father that the unease crept in, thoughts that this was all too much, that what she needed more than revenge was peace, and that for the first time in her life, she was starting to resent the parade of lies. These were the thoughts that overtook her in the quiet moments.

The predictability of her days helped. The Garrison, the Shelbys, and her work with Campbell created a routine in which Grace felt a certain comfort. She was learning to read them all, even the Shelbys, and she'd struct an undeniable balance with it all, something that resembled peace, even if it was built on misrepresentation.

And if anything was riddled with deception, it was her qualifications. Grace hadn't taken any teacher preparation courses. She considered herself to be quite the expert on governesses though, having gone through enough of them in her youth, but she certainly wasn't one. The lie she told Thomas, and then to Clara, had slipped off her tongue as easily as any of the others had.

Hailed from Galway.

Raised a good Catholic girl.

Running from unwanted pregnancy.

Worked as a barmaid in Dublin.

Why shouldn't she add 'private tutor' to the list?

Tommy hadn't requested any sort of proof of her training. She was deemed, after some mysterious test, clever enough, and trustworthy enough, to leave his sister in her charge, or very nearly in her charge. In the little under two weeks of lessons, Tommy had repeatedly found ways to linger in the Garrison under one guise or another.

"Are you sure it's wise to be so close?"

"Hmm?" Grace said, looking up from the reflection pool, finally making eye contact. "She doesn't remember it, sir."

"How can you be sure?"

"She would have told her brother."

Grace was certain the girl either didn't remember or failed to make the connection on that day. She had been upset at the time and Grace had been situated at the Garrison when Tommy brought her in, her presence in the pub at that moment almost like an alibi of sorts.

And Grace knew there was something significant there between Thomas and Clara Shelby, something which set their relationship apart from that with the others. Grace had decided on the uniqueness of the situation from the moment Tommy carried the girl into the Garrison that afternoon to get patched up.

Aside from the one near smile, she'd not seen or heard of a side of Thomas Shelby that wasn't hard and bristled, but Grace watched the girl blur his rigid boundaries, ignoring the cautionary growls and almost always seeming to retreat before meeting the sting of a bite. It seemed an instinctual thing, navigating her brother, and even when she miscalculated, the girl still had her brother's quick forgiveness. Grace hadn't expected the man to be good with forgiveness.

"And Thomas has been open with you regarding his sister's opinions?"

Grace nodded. "He has been considerably open with me, especially about his sister."

"The girl likes you then?" Campbell smiled.

"Quite the opposite, sir." Grace cleared her throat. "She's quite concerned with her academic situation as well as the placement of her brother's attention." Grace glanced up at the Inspector. "I do feel if the girl trusts me, her brother's trust will follow."

"And you can accomplish this?"

Grace nodded. "It's well under control, sir."

Campbell shook his head as he sat beside Grace, unable to hide the laugh from his voice. "So, the head of the Peaky Blinders is a child, then? A little girl?"

"No, sir, I believe Thomas is the head," Grace said, "but the little girl has his heart."

"You speak of heart with this ruthless savage." Campbell sighed, clasping his hand over Grace's. "I still feel you are too decent for this work, Grace."

The girl's unyielding dislike unnerved Grace in a way it shouldn't have. She recognized the looks Clara directed her way, the purposeful edge regularly slipping into the girl's answers, the indignant, "well, my brother says…" constantly sneaking through her lips. Grace knew the power little heart-holding girls had over the men who adored them. She had thwarted two potential stepmothers by the time she was Clara's age.

And Clara Shelby's discontent was more dangerous than Grace let on.

Grace didn't necessarily blame the girl for looking after her brother's interests, the brother that by Grace's measure was something closer to a parent to her. Tommy admitted to nearly raising her and the other brother, Finn. He had offered her the abridged explanation, brief and only as it pertained to his sister. The father wasn't around for the kids, gone completely for ten years now. The mother was gone when the twins were young. His brothers and sister and his aunt were what was left.

Tommy's sticking around during his sister's lessons or coming back early to retrieve girl had Grace curious, about his actions, about the small admissions she earned by listening to him, by laughing with him, by smiling with him. So far, the information she'd gleaned had been offered in the name of helping her to get on well with his sister. Grace always stowed intelligence like that away because it pertained to the girl, but it pertained to Thomas Shelby, too. It told her something about him whether he intended it to or not.

Grace spotted the girl coming out from the snug a few seconds before Tommy did. "Finished already?"

Clara glanced at her for a moment before stepping in front of her brother, her back to Grace, no true evidence that she had even heard the question.

Tommy looked at his sister, a casual smile still on his face, the subtle response to a story Grace had just told him, something about her childhood, something simple and universal enough that wasn't a lie. "Grace asked you a question."

Clara leaned against his knee. "Can you take me home?"

Grace barely heard the question. The girl had mumbled it, barely moving her lips to let the words escape. Tommy reached out to push a strand of hair behind his sister's ear, one of those unique tender moments Grace had trouble reconciling with the head of the Peaky Blinders.

"What's going on with you today, eh?"

Tommy had informed Grace that his sister was in a mood as soon as they'd shut her away in the snug. She had presumed it was simply the day's excuse for him pulling out a chair and settling at the table rather than leaving the girls alone, but Grace was nearly convinced it was the truth.

Clara shrugged, redoing the hair tucking Tommy had just finished, leaning into him again.

"Are you sick?"

She didn't look it, a bit tired maybe, but with no other clear signs of ailment. Jeremiah had removed the stitches on her head, leaving a decent bit of scarring, but there were no infections, no complications. By all accounts, she was very nearly mended and cleared for both work in the yard and her lessons.

"I just want you to bring me home." Clara climbed on his lap, shifting closer to his chest when he didn't move to accommodate her.

Tommy budged then, sitting up straighter and shifting her towards him. "Does your wanting to go home have anything to do with the work you're meant to be finishing?"

Clara fidgeted with something, her back still to Grace, the girl obscuring half of Tommy's face.

"Please, Tommy?"

Tommy glanced over his sister's head, eyes flitting to Grace's for just a moment, smirking with just a glance and her cheeks flushed. Tommy pulled his pocket watch from Clara's hand, slipping it back in place.

"That's the fourth question you've not given a proper answer for."

Clara shrugged again and Tommy's hand found her chin.

"Are you finished with your work?"

Clara shook her head as much as his grip allowed, reaching up to rub her jaw when he dropped his hand.

"Then you best go get on with it."

"Can you sit with me since you're skipping your meetings?"

"I'm speaking with Grace."

"I can sit out here, then."

"You can go sit right back in the snug."

Tommy put her back on her feet and Clara folded her arms across her chest.

"But, Tommy—"

"Clara, I—"

"Maybe a glass of water would help?" Grace offered, the scraping of her chair sounding though Tommy put out a hand, slowing her movement as he looked to his sister. She recognized the familiar cadence of their interactions, knew that Clara was inching towards Tommy's bite even though the girl had yet to recognize it.

"Grace asked you a question."

Clara's shoulders rose slowly before finally falling, hands balled into fists. "No, I—"

"I didn't ask you the question." Tommy turned her by the shoulder, pushing her a step closer to Grace.

Clara glared at him for a moment before turning to face Grace full-on, dropping her arms and the subdued tone. "No, I don't want the bloody water."

Grace's lips parted for just a moment. She swallowed once before she and Tommy spoke simultaneously, her words lost and fallen away beneath his deeper tone.

"Most kids talking like that at school earn themselves an afternoon of writing out lines, isn't that right, Gr—?"

"Good thing I'm not at school then," Clara answered.

Grace let out a small laugh, followed by a deliberate clearing of her throat. She tried to sober her face to meet Tommy's eyes.

Tommy's lips pulled halfway to a smirk as he caught the shine in Grace's eyes.

"Good thing Grace is your teacher and not me, more like. 'Cause if it was up to me you'd have used up all your chances on that silly little word."

"I was just telling the truth."

"You were just being smart."

"No, I—"

Grace cleared her throat and while Clara stopped herself short, only Tommy shifted his eyes to her. "Perhaps we can all agree to not use those words in the future and we'll just leave it for today? Since before now it hadn't been discussed?"

Tommy raised an eyebrow. "That's awfully forgiving of you, Grace."

"It wasn't an established rule, Thomas."

"Oh, it's been a long-established rule in the Shelby household, right Clara?" Tommy turned to his sister who merely shrugged.

Grace smirked again. "Well, not between us, not until just now. But now that we've had the discussion, I'm sure it won't happen again, right, Clara?"

Tommy nudged her and Clara nodded.

"Right, so you knew what you were doing," Tommy said. "But Grace wants to forgive it, so it's forgiven. I expect you've got… What do you think, Grace?" He looked to the barmaid. "Another hour with those papers?"

"But—"

Tommy interrupted his sister, pulling the watch from his pocket and slipping it into her hand. "Take this with you. Stay in there until the hour's up. And this is the last chance, eh?"

Clara clasped her hand around the watch and pushed around her brother to go back to the snug.

"Can I shut the door?" The girl asked, turning back to them when she didn't receive an answer. "Your incessant speaking is too loud for me to concentrate."

Tommy nodded, his face neutral though he wanted to smirk and Grace chuckled as the girl pulled the door shut, rattling the pane of glass. Tommy shook his head as he turned his attention back to Grace and his whiskey.

"Mr. Shelby, she's—"

"Trying?" he offered. "That's just how the Shelby women are, always trying on one's patience."

"I was going to say she's not enjoying the lessons."

"She's not here to enjoy herself. She's here to learn something."

Grace shook her head. "A girl like her, well—I have two more things I'd like to discuss as part of our deal." Grace looked to Tommy, a certain brightness in her blue eyes, a calm smile on her lips, hands flat on her lap while she waited.

"Two things? I've already given you more money for the dress and agreed to the singing," Tommy answered, smirking as he sipped the whiskey.

"Well, these conditions are about your sister."

"My sister?"

Grace nodded. "First, I'd like to be allowed to take her out for some practical learning."

"Practical learning?"

"She's clearly a smart girl, but I think she'd benefit from seeing things, having some hands-on learning. I know she won't have been given the opportunity at the school. And she's made it clear she won't be happy sitting here with me all day."

"I'll consider it." Tommy fished a cigarette out of his case, rolling it along his lip before lighting it and looking to Grace. "And the other thing?"

"I think you should put her back in school."

Tommy dispelled a puff of smoke before looking at her. "Trying to put yourself out of a job already?"

"No, Mr. Shelby, of course not." Grace dipped her hand into her pocket, pulling out a pamphlet.

"Her moods are no longer enticing to you, then? I warned you she wasn't nearly so sweet as you thought."

Grace ignored his teasing as she slid the pamphlet over to him. "There's a school just across town. You said yourself she wasn't being challenged before. She'd be challenged there."

Clara was the type of child who would learn whether someone was teaching her or not, the type of child that was too curious for their own good if left alone. And Tommy had been right; his sister hadn't been challenged. Grace was quite certain Clara hadn't ever been properly tested in her eleven years, not academically or otherwise. She seemed to do her fair share of testing others though. Grace was certainly feeling tested, had a feeling Tommy was too.

"There's tuition, but I suppose with her capabilities she would be scholarship eligible."

"You think I can't afford to pay for my sister's education?"

Grace opened and closed her mouth, sending him a straight-lipped smile. "I just think she'd be eligible, Mr. Shelby. She's at least a year ahead in everything except the mathematics, but she's naturally quick with that, so it shouldn't be any trouble preparing her."

Tommy glanced through the pamphlet. "So, you'll prepare her then? For these exams?"

Grace nodded. "So long as she's allowed the outings, and I'm still allowed the singing. She could start there in the new year."

Tommy folded the pamphlet as he fit it in his pocket. "I've already said yes to the singing and that I'll consider the outings." He flicked his cigarette. "And Grace, I'd like you to stick with preparing her for the examination. Don't go teaching my sister any of your diplomacy skills."

Warmth crept into Grace's cheeks as she smiled at him. "I can't help what she picks up on naturally, Mr. Shelby."

Nearly an hour more of conversation had passed when Tommy heard the bell and glanced away from where Grace stood, polishing glasses at the bar. The top of a flat cap emerged through the front door, a small pudgy hand wrapped around the wood.

"Finn?"

"Oh, hi, Tommy. Pub's closed?"

Tommy nodded and Finn turned his back on him for a moment before Isiah followed, both sets of eyes sweeping over the empty room.

"What're you boys up to?"

"Is Clara here? We're supposed to play."

Tommy raised an eyebrow. "Play what?"

"Just playing in the lane, Tommy." Finn rolled his eyes. "She said yes last night and Isiah came down special for the afternoon."

Tommy glanced at the older boy then back to Finn. "So, Isiah came down special and you want to play with your sister in the lane?"

"Yeah, Tommy." Finn climbed into the seat beside him. "And Clara said yes last night."

"What's brought that on?"

"Ruthie got a new ball, but she won't play unless Clara's there because she don't like being the only girl and Clara said she'd only play if Isiah played, so I got Isiah, and Clara's gonna be on my team because she's got a good kick."

"Probably all the stomping she does." Tommy glanced at Grace. "You think she's finished?"

"Must be nearly." Grace moved towards the service window at the end of the bar.

"The boys can take her off your hands, then?" Tommy asked.

Grace turned to him and nodded, knocking as she pulled open the window.

Clara glanced up at the opening shutters, her feet rested on a chair while she read the book she'd brought from home. The pile of questions Grace had handwritten for her sat at the end of the table, discarded there by Clara upon being sent back to the snug.

Grace glanced at the papers. "How was it?"

Clara shrugged once, closing the book and stepping out of the room towards her brothers and Isiah, leaving Grace to come from behind the bar to fetch the papers herself.

"How did it go?" Tommy asked.

"Fine, Tommy," she answered, setting the watch on the table as she leaned over the arm of his chair. "Can I go with the boys?"

Tommy nodded. "Stay away from the Cut. Be home for Polly's supper," he said to the twins before shifting his gaze to Isiah. "Your dad out preaching tonight?"

Isiah nodded.

"Then you come in for supper, too. Tell Polly I told you, alright? And you two, no teasing, yeah?" Tommy glanced back at his siblings.

Finn was halfway turned when he answered, the boys already heading for the door.

Tommy nodded then, and Clara set her book on the table. "Can I leave this?"

He took a breath, raising his eyebrows at her. "What do you think I am, a—?"

"A pack horse," she answered. "Please? I don't wanna get it dirty."

Tommy smirked. "Alright, but no fighting, with your brother or anyone else, alright? And stick by the boys?"

"I know, Tommy."

Finn called back through the door for her and Tommy waved her off. Grace scanned through the blank papers as she returned to the table, handing them off to Tommy as Clara slammed the pub door behind her.

Tommy glanced at the time when he heard the creak of the steps. He hadn't heard from his sister since sending her upstairs with the unfinished papers, and he hadn't expended the effort to go check on her either, but he expected her to be asleep by now.

Tommy had settled at the table with the books after sending Polly home. The extra time at the Garrison and in the yard had cut into time he usually spent with the business. He had needed an evening to catch up, even if that meant being awake well past midnight. He wasn't eager to sleep anyhow. He'd get things in order now and be on track moving forward.

He could feel the daytime visits to the Garrison were nearing their end. When he sent his sister upstairs with the papers and a mandate that they be finished, Tommy saw some sort of shift in her, some understanding. He'd been waiting nearly two weeks for that.

And then there was Grace to consider. There was no doubt the woman interested him, the way she didn't cringe away from Small Heath's lesser qualities, yet he could tell she was surprised by it. And she was a liar, but she had a curious mind and she could hold her own with Clara, had understood the girl quicker than most.

Tommy knew Grace was right, that his sister was hating the lessons as they were and that she'd need a proper school. The outings would help for now, and the idea of being prepared for a real school situation would help too. He'd let Grace be the one to introduce those ideas to her, allow her the credit she was due. Hopefully, that would help things too.

"It's late," Tommy offered, his eyes pulling up from the books as Clara entered the room.

"You told me to finish."

That was his directive, presented when he sent her up the stairs after pulling her away from supper with Polly and the boys.

"You're finished, then?" Tommy nodded towards the papers and she shook her head. "You've been working this whole time?"

Clara nodded once, a stilted and curt movement, and Tommy started to speak into the quiet, interrupted on the first syllable by a sob breaking from his sister's lips, her body quaking as she stood across the room.

Tommy exhaled, thinking of the other brother asleep above them as her sobs rang through the lower floor. "Alright, come here. Sit," he said.

Clara shook her head, arms crossed over her chest with the papers clenched in her hand.

Tommy reached over to pull her closer, taking the papers from her as he rubbed a hand over her arm and shoulder, a bit surprised she didn't seek his arms, merely putting her hands on the arm of his chair to keep the distance.

Tommy tilted her head up to him, her sputtering tears now directed at him as she howled.

"What is it?"

Clara wailed at his question and Tommy brought her onto his lap, pushing her face against his chest, muffling the howling as her body shook against him.

"Alright, Clara girl. It's alright."

Tommy continued to murmur the gentle words, his hand rubbing small circles on her back. She'd gotten quieter after a reminder of the twin sleeping above their heads, but Tommy could still sense the tension in her body, the stress in her clenched shoulders, that extra bit of vigor in the hand grasping his shirt.

Tommy flipped through the pages he'd sent her away with, blank aside from eraser marks and cross-outs, and then he sighed, feeling rather like an idiot because he'd forgotten. Grace had told him his sister seemed to be ahead in everything except the math, told him that the work would be testing Clara beyond what Grace thought she had been taught at the school, just to see, just to be sure.

He dropped the paper on the table.

"Alright, Clara, c'mon, my girl. You've gotta settle. It's alright."

"It's not alright," she finally answered, voice raised as she spoke through the tears and the great gulps of air she was taking to supply them.

"No, you're right, and it won't be if you're decided on being upset."

Tommy twisted her from her spot against his chest, pulling her arms from her face when she raised them to hide behind. He took the watch from his pocket, slipping it into one of her hands for the second time in a day.

Her body still shook but Tommy smiled as she exposed the watch face, her breaths growing deeper and slower as she monitored the clock hands, timing her inhales and exhales as he'd once taught her. Tommy's breathing followed, slowing as he matched her, his ears following the steady ticks while his eyes stayed on his sister.

"So, it's not alright, then, eh?" Tommy said.

Clara shook her head. "I can't do it. I'm too st-stupid."

Breathing nearly slowed, she placed the pocket watch back in her brother's hand and tried to move back against his chest, but Tommy stopped her, forcing her up on her feet as he set the watch away. His hands found the sides of her face.

"Clara, look at me."

She was shaking her head, trying to pull his hands away as she kept her eyes away from him. "No, Tommy. I'm an idiot. I c-c-can't do it a-an—"

"Enough, alright? I want you to listen to me."

"But I can't do it."

"And that's alright. You're not an idiot." Tommy removed a hand to hold up the papers. "You've not been taught this yet, yeah?

Clara sniffled, shaking her head. "Ms. Masters said we didn't need it. Made the girls do needlepoint instead."

Tommy blinked a few times, taking a deep breath. That fucking school, he thought.

"I assumed about your reasons for not doing it before," he said. "I shouldn't have, but I don't want you upsetting yourself over not knowing something you shouldn't be expected to know in the first place."

He knew it was more than that, knew that she was upset with the predicament, upset with him still for taking her out of school, missing Ada still. It wasn't just about a difficult problem set. And he figured she was only this upset because what she really needed, more than those other things being settled, was to be put to bed.

Clara wiped her face, taking a settling breath, and Tommy dropped his hands, watching her as he sat back in his chair. She stepped away, sitting beside him as she continued to wipe at her face.

"If you didn't understand the questions, you could've told Grace. She wants to help you. That's what I'm paying her for." Tommy took a cigarette from its case, making eye contact before reaching for the matches. "Or you could've told me. I came home thinking you were just being rebellious before, reading your book instead of doing your work to make some sort of statement, so I shouted and sent you up."

Clara looked back at him, pulling her legs up and wrapping her arms around her knees while he lit the cigarette, pulling a drag and releasing it away from her. Tommy gestured towards her with the cigarette.

"But I should know my Clara wouldn't do that, eh?"

Clara made an indiscriminate jerk of her head that committed to neither a 'yes' or a 'no' with any clarity.

"No, of course not." Tommy flicked ash from the end of the cigarette. "That'd be silly," he continued, "especially when she'd already used up all of her chances."

Tommy took another drag while watching her. "But then I suppose that is the type of silly thing a smart girl might do without thinking hard enough first."

Clara was quiet, her eyes finding the dying fire across the room, flashing to her brother for a brief moment as a rumble sounded from her stomach and her hands moved to subdue it.

"Your aunt set these aside." Tommy set the plate down in front of her, two undisturbed halves of a sandwich Polly knew her nephew had no intention of touching even when she set them down on the sideboard.

"Eat up and we'll get you to bed."

Clara broke off a small piece of the sandwich as Tommy stubbed out his cigarette, looking to the books again, finally feeling the lateness of the night.

"Tommy?"

He glanced at Clara, all puffy-eyed and blotched cheeks as she picked at the bread.

"You might have been a little right before," she said, focused on her sandwich.

"About all the fussing? I—"

She shook her head. "No, before-before."

Tommy nodded, settling back in the chair. "So, you are a smart girl who had a silly moment and forgot to think, then?"

She shrugged. "Maybe a little."

Tommy took a deep breath. "Well, there are worse things than having a silly moment. Could be a silly girl who never learns how to think," Tommy offered. "There are enough people going around not thinking, so next time, you just remember to think for me, eh?"

Clara nodded, finally looking at him instead of the sandwich. Tommy nodded in turn before glancing back to the books.

"Will you show me?" she asked.

Tommy smirked, eyes still scanning the book. "Show you how to think?"

"No," she giggled, her foot pushing into his knee. "How to answer the questions."

"Ah." Tommy looked at her. "You ask Grace to show you tomorrow. It's late tonight."

"But you're still working on the books."

Tommy rubbed his eyes. If he took his sister up to bed, he doubted he'd come back down the stairs. The pipe and kit were in his bedside table, just steps from where he'd be after tucking her in, far more enticing than ledger lines and John's penmanship.

"Can you show me that? What you're doing with the books? And then I'll go to sleep."

"I should take you up now."

"But I'm not finished eating."

Tommy glanced at the sandwich, a few meager pieces of bread pinched off the only evidence she'd even touched it. Then he looked at the ledger. It was just a benign page, nothing illegal, just the recordings of the previous week's races, nothing fixed, no tracking of protection or contraband profits. He moved the book towards his sister, pulling her chair a bit closer.

"Alright, but just one page," he said, "and you keep your crumbs to yourself or Polly'll kill us both."

Honest to god, I have a plan for this story, but lord knows where my motivation and inspiration are hiding. That said, I'm hoping to get this one wrapped up soon! There are chapters I've had planned since last summer that I haven't gotten to...so hopefully this summer you'll finally get to experience them. :'D

Ladybug slowly removes her hands from her ears once it appears that Chloe is finally done screaming. For a moment, she wonders if perhaps this wasn't the best idea, but it's too late now. It's clear that Chloe is 100% on board for whatever they're going to ask her to do, even though she has no idea what they want.

Chloe is practically leaping in ecstasy as she rushes to get her laptop and phone, at the ready and prepared to help Ladybug and Chat Noir in any way that they need. It's been far too long since she's had a chance to prove her value to her favorite superhero.

This request is also particularly important as it has only been a week since she accidentally caused another akuma (really, it wasn't her fault the ridiculous hairdresser her father hired for her was incompetent at her job and that she actually thought a perm would be a good look for the likes of Mademoiselle Bourgeois), she is eager to prove that she can indeed help the heroes of Paris. In a way that they will be sure to appreciate.

“I am so excited you finally decided to come to me for help! I’ll be the best hero ever. I can get a proper suit made, we can get special bluetooth communicators— it’s going to be oh so perfect! Speaking of which, don't think I didn't notice all of the changes you made to your suit, Ladybug. I love it. I've always wondered why you didn't have wings. It only makes sense. You're a Ladybug, for crying out loud." She gestures at Chat Noir. "After all, a ladybug without wings would be like a cat without ears.”

She continues to dance around the room for several minutes, gathering items from her cosplay closet and from her makeup boxes until she realizes that neither Ladybug nor Chat Noir are saying anything. She whirls around.

“Wait, I didn’t even ask you. What do you need my help with? Is it for a mission? Do you need money? Power? Influence? An invitation to the most exclusive parties in Paris? I have access to everything you could ever want or need."

She knows she's babbling, but something about the intense way the two of them are staring at her is starting to make her a little nervous. Though she would never admit it. Chloe Bourgeois does not get intimidated by anyone, even her favorite superheroes.

Well, superhero. Chat Noir isn't that great. A true hero would actually help a damsel in distress and rescue her from doing ghastly physics homework. Like darling Adrien would. Even though he's been ignoring her calls more often lately, the rude boy.

"What? What is it? Is there something wrong? Do I need Daddy to help too?"

Ladybug bites her lips and slowly exhales. This, for some reason, makes Chloe even more nervous than before.

“Well, Chloe— it has to do with Adrien,” she says, her voice low and careful. “And what the press thinks is going on between us.”

Chloe feels her heart sinking into her stomach. It’s a curious feeling. Though she is still excited that they want her help, this is not what she expected.

“Oh. I see,” she says, taking care to sound calm and detached, above any emotional connections. Haughty.

“And what exactly do you expect me to do about it? Adrien hasn’t spoken to me at all about this. Does he know you’re here?”

Ladybug and Chat Noir exchange secretive glances that clearly mean something — Chloe has no idea what — and Ladybug slowly nods.

“Yes. He does.”

Chloe raises an eyebrow and crosses her arms. “Okay...and?”

Chat Noir steps forward. “He agreed it would be a good idea to ask you for advice. He said you would know how to help us — I mean, Ladybug and him — deal with the press and deflect their attention.”

Chloe turns back to Ladybug. “Look, if I’m going to help you, I need to know what the deal is. Are you really dating each other? Or did the tabloids just see the pictures from the photoshoot and start building rumors out of thin air? As I’m sure you know, he and I are very close. But I haven’t asked him anything about you, out of respect for his privacy.”

This isn’t entirely true. Chloe has mostly refrained from asking Adrien about what his status with Ladybug is out of a very strange feeling of jealousy that has consumed her ever since she saw the first tabloid headline about them together. She’s not sure who she’s more jealous of— Ladybug, Adrien, both of them, perhaps— it’s all very confusing, and both Sabrina and the internet have been of absolutely no use at all.

Ladybug pauses. “It’s a little hard to explain.”

“What’s so hard about it?” presses Chloe, raising an eyebrow. “Either you’re together, or you’re not.”

“Yes, we’re together...but it’s not...how do I put it—”

Chloe is starting to get annoyed, though she still wants to be respectful. “But what? What is it?”

“We’re—we’re in an open relationship!” Ladybug blurts out. “Yes! That’s it. An open relationship. No strings attached.”

“An...open relationship?” repeats Chloe. “What exactly do you mean?”

“Um, essentially...we’re not exclusive?”

“Oh. I see. That is...very interesting.”

All the pieces start coming together as she considers this very unexpected piece of information. If they’re not exclusive, that means there is a third person or possibly even a fourth person in the equation.

Chloe runs through everyone in her social circle. Perhaps it’s a stranger. Perhaps it’s not.

And then it occurs to her that the answer might be standing right in front of her.

She turns an appraising eye to Chat Noir. Who she has also noticed has suddenly gotten much taller than before. Personally, she’s not a fan. He practically looks like a giant now. Have his hands gotten even bigger? It’s ridiculous. He’s supposed to be a cat, not a mountain lion.

But then again, perhaps Ladybug is interested in that sort of thing.

She inclines her head towards him.

“Is he ….part of your... arrangement ?”

Ladybug’s eyes grow wide. “Chat Noir? I, um—well, I would rather not discuss details...”

“Then I can’t help you,” answers Chloe, crossing her arms. “Either you tell me all your dirty laundry or I can't help you avoid the nosy press at all. I can't develop a strategy without ”

“I knew this would be a bad idea,” Ladybug mutters under her breath, turning away.

“It’s a delicate matter, Mademoiselle Bourgeois,” cuts in Chat Noir, stepping forward and looking back and forth between the two girls. “But if My Lady doesn’t want to share details, I do ask that you respect her wishes.”

Chloe scowls. It’s clear that playing hardball won’t help her get any details that will help her figure out what’s going on. She bites her lip as she wonders what strategy she can possibly use next to get some sort of information. Ladybug and Chat Noir are naive to think they’re being subtle about the fact that there’s something going on between the two of them as well, but the subtle tension between them is hardly something Chloe can leverage as proof.

A not so quiet part of her mind urges her to indicate her own interest in Ladybug, but she pushes it away. Now is not the time to proposition her hero, as much as she’s secretly fantasized about it. No, she needs to wait for the right moment...ideally when Chat Noir isn’t standing in between them.

She gulps as she realizes Ladybug is staring at her with narrowed eyes. Merde , she’s been quiet too long.

“Chloe, if you’re thinking about how to blackmail us—if I have any reason to believe you’re going to make trouble for us—”

“I would never!” she gasps, raising her arms and stepping back. “Adrien is one of my oldest friends. I would never betray his trust like that.”

Ladybug nods, though her expression is still uncertain. “Okay. I will choose to trust you. For now.”

“Well, you’re the one who burst in here,” Chloe replies, a little more testily than intended. “I should be the one wondering whether to trust you.”

Ladybug opens her mouth, presumably to deliver a pointed retort, but to Chloe’s surprise, she just as quickly shuts it and steps back, turning around to face the window.

Chloe can see her reflection in the glass panels. She looks somber.

“Look. Adrien has a special connection with me, but there's someone else in his life too, someone who can't be seen in public with him thanks to his association with me. The last thing he wants is for her to be hounded by the press or for her privacy to be invaded.”

Chloe nods. “I understand.”

“Actually, what we really want is for the press to stop pressing him about his personal life at any given moment, but I realize that’s never going to happen.”

Ladybug turns back around to face Chloe.

“I wanted us to handle this on our own. But it would be unwise not to talk to someone who's handled press like this before. And you're the first person I thought of. So tell me, Chloe. What would you do in a situation like this? What...does your father do?”

Chloe thinks about the endless parade of women that have come through her father’s mansion ever since her parents separated. Women that the press has never heard of, because whenever there was a chance of being found out, her father would do two things: a) create a public distraction; and b) disappear from the public eye on a short holiday in a place where the French tabloids couldn’t find him, long enough for them to find some celebrity story more interesting than his. It is a strategy that has worked for the past thirteen years, and is likely to work as long as the tabloids continue to have a short memory.

So this is the advice that she imparts.

Ladybug stares dubiously at Chloe.

“You think we should create a ‘public distraction’? Akumas are public distractions. Holiday parades are public distractions. What you’re suggesting sounds a lot like a public relations stunt. And not a good one.”

“I’m not saying you’re wrong about that,” Chloe drawls in her insufferably smug way. “I’m just saying that if you want the press to fixate on something else, you have to give them something to fixate on .”

“And you think that Chat Noir posing for a sexy photoshoot is the right kind of bait?!”

“Come on, Ladybug. Look at your partner. Who wouldn’t want to stare at him? He’s delicious to look at now.”

Ladybug curls her lip in disgust. “Ugh, don’t describe him like that. You make him sound like a piece of meat to be devoured by hungry gold diggers looking for fifteen minutes of fame.”

Chloe scowls. “That’s the point! You want people to be fixated on him. Everyone’s been paying so much attention to you ever since your little photoshoot in the mountains that they haven’t even noticed how Chat Noir has been changing physically along with you.”

“Why does that even matter?! Of course we’re changing. We were never going to stay children forever.”

“Listen. You want to know about distractions? This is the best distraction you’ve got, standing right in front of you, and willing to do whatever he needs to do to make you happy, judging from how he looks at you. He’s become a handsome young bachelor overnight. Or are you afraid to share the spotlight?”

Ladybug shakes her head. “I’m not afraid of anything. What I’m afraid of is taking your suggestions at face value and then regretting the consequences. We’re not doing this.”

Chloe shrugs. “Unless you have any better ideas, Adrien and his secret civilian companion won’t be able to step out together in public without getting noticed. But maybe that’s secretly what you want, anyway. To keep him to yourself. You’re more selfish than I thought, Ladybug.”

“Excuse me, Mademoiselle Bourgeois, for thinking your idea is ridiculous. I didn’t realize the only suggestion you could give us would be this. How can I, in good conscience, ask my own partner to willingly subject himself to the same kind of objectification I’m experiencing myself? I refuse to be a hypocrite like that.”

“Actually, it’s not the same thing at all. And, I might add, the final choice is with Chat Noir, not you. You might be the leader of your duo, but he can make his own choices.”

“I’m sure he agrees with me. Come on, mon chaton , let’s go. This was a bad idea.”

Without another word, Ladybug slips out of the window and disappears into the night.

To Chloe’s surprise, Chat Noir doesn’t immediately follow Ladybug, choosing instead to linger for a few moments before he finally leaves without saying a word.

For some reason, Chloe feels like there's something he wants to ask her, but can’t.

She doesn't quite know what to make of the feeling, and decides ultimately to ignore it.

Close to midnight, Chloe is about to fall asleep, when a dark shadow reappears outside her room.

Common sense tells her to scream, but instinct tells her that it’s someone she knows.

When she parts the curtains, she learns that her instinct was right: it’s Chat Noir, who has presumably returned to talk about whatever it was he couldn’t talk about in front of Ladybug.

She lets him in with a yawn.

“So, you’re back,” she says. “Did you change your mind about helping me with physics homework after all? It’s a little later for that.”

He snorts. “Ever the opportunist.”

“Are you really surprised?”

“Not at all,” he says, laughing in an oddly familiar way, and Chloe gets the strange feeling that she’s had a conversation like this with him before.

“But no. That’s not why I’m here.”

“I know there was something you wanted to say before you left a few hours ago. What was it?”

“You’re more observant that I realized.”

“Of course I am,” she retorts. “I’m a politician’s daughter. It’s my responsibility to be the most observant girl in the room.”

Chat Noir raises an eyebrow and his lips curl up into a grin that is just a little too smug for Chloe’s liking.

“Is that right? Interesting.”

“If there’s a joke, I’d like to be in on it,” she responds, curt once again. “Otherwise, get to the point. You’re cutting into my precious beauty sleep.”

Chat Noir nods and leans against the window.

“Ok. I have to be honest with you. It was Ladybug’s idea to come here. She genuinely wanted your help—”

“Obviously!”

“Please, let me finish.”

Chloe flushes with embarrassment. She doesn’t usually care about coming across as rude, but for some reason, this feels a little different.

“I’m sorry. Go on.”

“Even though she didn’t understand why you were suggesting what you did, I do. And I’m ready to go through with it.”

“I’m sorry?”

“The sexy photoshoot. I’m ready to do it.”

“Did you come here just to tell me that?” asks Chloe, confused.

Char Noir’s voice is steady. “No. I came here to explain why.”

And then, in a flash of green, Chat Noir is gone. In his place stands someone Chloe thought she knew well, but it’s clear that she doesn’t know at all.

“Adrichou? You’re Chat Noir?!”

Though he often feels the desire to do so, Adrien Agreste has rarely acted on impulse or instinct. Thanks to his overprotective parents, he has always followed the rules.

It’s only after becoming Chat Noir that he’s learned the benefits of taking calculated risks, and while he still doesn’t take too many when he doesn’t have the shield of his all-concealing disguise, he’s learned to listen to that inner instinct that tells him to do things his father would consider ill-advised and unreasonable.

And although he’s sure that even Ladybug would think what he’s doing is crazy, when he looks into Chloe’s eyes as she advises them on how to avoid the tabloids and what to do to keep them from finding out about their private lives, he can’t help but feel like in the process, she’s sharing details about her own life that he has always been vaguely aware of, but which he has never spoken to her about.

Because they’re not the kind of friends she likes to pretend they are, and they haven’t been, for a very long time. The Chloe Bourgeois he knew as a child is not the selfish, self-absorbed girl standing in front of him now. And yet something about the tiny sliver of honesty he can feel in her words is what compels him to share the truth about his identity with her, to help her understand why Ladybug has come to her for help, why they believe that she has the answers that nobody else will have.

Anyone else would tell him he's being irrational; and in truth, it's not like Chloe has done anything to merit his trust over the past few years. And yet instinct is telling him that this is the right thing to do.

He knows he can't reveal himself while Ladybug is still there, so he waits until she's gone. But even then, at first, he fights the instinct. It's not the right time; it's not the right moment.

He comes back at midnight, and before he can second guess himself, he de-transforms.

Ready to face the consequences, not matter what they may be.

If he's honest with himself, Adrien doesn't know what to expect from Chloe. But it's obvious that this is the last thing she was expecting herself, as she stands in front of him, jaw practically on the floor.

“You’re dating Ladybug,” she whispers. A question, not a statement. "And someone else at the same time. I don't understand."

He can only share his truth; not his lady’s. So even as he shares the deepest secret of his life, he lies.

“I would say ‘friends with benefits’ is a better way to describe the relationship between Ladybug and me," he replies. The lie falls off his tongue like silk.

Chloe shakes her head. "Of everyone I know, you're the last person I would ever have expected to have a friends with benefits relationship with anyone. I always thought you were a romantic. I guess I was wrong."

"Neither of us know each other as well as we used to, Chloe," says Adrien. "We haven't been honest with each other for a very long time."

She cuts her eyes away. "Can you blame me? I don't have much of an incentive to be honest with anyone in my life. I don't know who I can trust."

"It's not just that. It's hard to be friends with someone who acts unkind to almost everyone."

"Really? Did you come here to lecture me? Because I don't need to listen to you. I know what I'm doing, and why. Judge me all you want, but at the end of the day, both you and Ladybug came here to ask me for advice. And if you're going to criticize me after all of that, it makes you a hypocrite, not me."

Adrien shakes his head. "No, Chloe. That's not why I came here tonight. The reason I came here tonight is to talk to you about the other person in my life, because you know who she is."

"I don't understand."

"The other person in my life is Marinette Dupain-Cheng, and without your help, we can’t go anywhere together without the press questioning our every move. Since they think Ladybug and I are dating, if they see me on a date with Marinette, there will be a lot of uncomfortable questions that neither she nor I will be able to answer.”

"Why the hell would I want to help Marinette Dupain-Cheng?! " screeches Chloe. "Does she know about your secret identity too?!"

"No, she doesn't know," Adrien immediately cuts in smoothly. "Ladybug is aware of her, however, and he wants us to be able to be together in public."

“And Marinette doesn’t mind competing against a literal superheroine for your heart?”

“You’d be surprised. She has an open mind.”

Chloe narrows her eyes and considers him again. "I thought I knew you, Adrien Agreste, but it's clear that you're hiding a lot more than anyone knows. And god knows Marinette has far more patience than I would.”

"Listen," he replies. "When you were giving us that advice earlier? I know you were talking about everything that's happened with your father over the years. I know the press hasn't caught on at all, but it's obvious that you're speaking from experience when you talk about distracting the press so they don't know who you're spending time with. And I also know you haven't seen your mother in years."

"You don't know anything," Chloe hisses, eyes flashing angrily. "And don't bring my mother into this. I haven't brought yours into this discussion at all."

"I'm sorry. But the point is, I want to make sure you understand that I understand that finding privacy is incredibly difficult when you're a public figure. I've been living that struggle for years. And you know that. You know what it's like to have to pretend to be one way at school and another way at home, to put on a facade of happiness and being put together, and to keep the people who are important to you close to your chest and away from public view."

"What's your point?"

"My point is, that's how Marinette is for me. She's...she's precious to me. I don't want her to get hurt. I don't want anyone to get hurt. Not my lady, not Marinette, not my family...and I needed you to understand why this matters to me on multiple levels. And if it takes a racy photoshoot as Chat Noir to get the heat off Ladybug and attention off me as Adrien Agreste, then I'm willing to do it."

Chloe presses her lips together and frowns.

"It was different when I thought Chat Noir was someone else. Now that I know that he's you, I don't think it's the best idea, Adrichou. What if someone else finds out? What will your father say if he finds out?"

"Don't worry about that. If he hasn't found out who I am in the past three years, he's not about to discover my secret identity anytime soon. But I have to do this for Marinette and My Lady."

Chloe rolls her eyes. "You can't just pose for a sexy photoshoot to protect your girlfriend from the press. You have to have some sort of reason."

"Come on, I'm a superhero in a skintight black catsuit. I haven't leveraged this at all. I'm sure the public is just waiting to see my wild side, now that I'm a handsome young bachelor, as you put it," replies Adrien with a smirk.

"You know, I've seen video of when I was akumatized as Antibug, and I'm pretty sure I called you lame. I still stand by that statement."

Adrien grins. "Maybe. But I still think you should get me a shoot in the raciest magazine in Paris."

"Excuse me? Do I look like an agent to you? Schedule your own photoshoot!"

"Shame. I was under the impression you were connected to everyone in Paris. But I guess I can ask someone else to book me for a shoot. Maybe Nino can help me. I'm sure he'd love to help one of the coolest superheroes in Paris."

"Nino Lahiffe is a hipster and wouldn't be able to identify a single magazine that actually mattered if he tried."

"I suppose I could ask Alya to feature me on the Ladyblog as well. I'm sure she wouldn't mind."

"Absolutely not. If you want to do this effectively, you can't go through a blog , you have to go through a legitimate publication."

"Wow, Chloe, you know so much."

"Of course I do. This is my bread and butter. How else am I supposed to help my father navigate the nasty world of the press?"

"So you'll help me?"

"Ugh. Fine. Yes."

Michael Toure Joins Tata Harper, Sephora Asia Gets New President – WWD

Investment banker Michael Toure, founder of Toure Capital, has signed on to work with Tata Harper to help the Vermont-based natural skin-care brand ramp up diversity initiatives. Toure will be chair of the company’s equity, diversity and inclusivity advisory council, and will continue to operate Toure Capital, where he advises small- and medium-sized beauty businesses. “Being a Black guy and doing what I do, I was always the only Black person everywhere I went,” Toure said. He met Tata and Henry Harper years ago, when he helped them secure an investment from ACG Consumer Growth. Now, he’ll work with the business to hire a chief financial officer and has plans to present many diverse applicants for the position. “It’s much easier when you’re a recruiter to go to people that you know….I’ve just spent three days going through my network on LinkedIn and was able to bring 10 fantastic candidates from diverse backgrounds,” Toure said. Toure noted that one way to tackle the lack of diversity in the beauty industry is for smaller and mid-sized beauty companies, who are more nimble than large corporations, to hire more people of color. Ultimately, if those companies are acquired by big strategics, they’d be bringing in a diverse workforce, he added.

At Qurate Retail Group, Rob Robillard has been promoted, and Bridget Love will be stepping in to lead beauty. Robillard, vice president of integrated beauty merchandising, has been in the role since late 2017. He has been promoted to senior vice president to lead merchandising for QVC and HSN Home, home design and global sourcing and merchant operations. Robillard will transition to the role on Aug. 3. In the new job, he will lead merchandising across home categories including home innovations, electronics, culinary and home decor. He will also oversee the newly expanded design development and global sourcing program for the home division, as well as the merchandising operations team. As head of beauty merchandising, Robillard developed and implemented the company’s beauty strategy across categories. He will be succeeded by Love as QVC and HSN Beauty vice president, effective Aug. 3. Right now, Love leads beauty for HSN and is said to have increased the business. Love has been with the company since 2003, and has moved up the chain, holding different roles within the group, including as director of apparel merchandising and as a buyer for sportswear.

Rahquel Purcell has been named the head of operations for L’Oréal USA, starting Dec. 1. The position includes manufacturing, distribution, supply chain, purchasing, and environmental healthy, safety and sustainability. Purcell’s promotion comes after four years at the company, having joined as vice president, supply chain North America after 23 years at Procter & Gamble, the company said in a statement. She was promoted to senior vice president of supply chain, North America the following year. L’Oréal USA chief executive officer Stéphane Rinderknech called Purcell “a strategic thinker and natural leader,” in the statement. The statement referred to Purcell’s work on transportation, FFS management, distribution and customer care as strong points in her past role, as well as implementing a new supply chain plan. Purcell will maintain her position on L’Oréal USA’s management committee, and is set to join L’Oréal’s global operations management committee. The previous holder of the position, Xavier Windal, was highlighted for his work on e-commerce and evolving the supply chain model to encompass acquisitions. He will return to France to fill an undisclosed role.

Former Sephora Asia president Benjamin Vuchot will go to an undisclosed role reporting to Christopher de Lapuente. Grainne Quinlan

Alia Gogi has become the president of Sephora Asia. After serving as South East Asia managing director, Gogi will be taking over the role from Benjamin Vuchot, who will be reporting to global chief executive officer Christopher de Lapuente in an undisclosed role, the retailer said in a statement. Along with Gogi’s new role, current South East Asia vice president of markets Sarah Boyd will be taking over Gogi’s old position. Maggie Chan, managing director of Sephora China, will be given the title Sephora Greater China managing director to include Hong Kong. In the statement given out by Sephora, de Lapuente cited Gogi’s experience at Sephora China and Sephora SEA, alongside her “intuition for prestige beauty products as well as a tremendous hunger for driving the business” as catalysts for her promotion. He also thanked Benjamin Vuchot, whom he noted “almost doubled our business in the region over the course of three years. He leaves Sephora with the strongest Sephora Asia organization we have ever had.”

Nancy McKay has joined the Board of Directors at Sara Happ. Mary Dorn

Sara Happ Inc. has appointed Nancy McKay to its board of directors following its most recent funding round. The brand described Nancy McKay as an expert in driving brand growth and evolution, not to mention increased sales and profits. McKay mostly recently served as chief executive officer for wellness company Barefoot Scientist, and as the ceo of Nest Fragrances. During her tenure at Nest, her intensive growth strategy led to the sale of the brand. McKay also spent two decades at the Estée Lauder Cos. Inc., most recently as general manager and senior vice president of Estée Lauder, Tom Ford Beauty, and Aerin Beauty. The brand, which brought lip scrubs to the market in 2005, was started by Happ in her kitchen and was only sold in Los Angeles boutiques. “Her experience in the beauty space is unmatched. SEO for Blogs for Authors: Optimize Your Blog for Google and People

As an author, you should create a blog to promote your brand, portray your image and deliver your message. Creating a blog, writing articles, and promoting them produces it’s own unique set of challenges for most authors. Few writers are trained, at least initially, in building a web site. Even more difficult is the concept of SEO for blogs for authors. SEO is Search Engine Optimization. That simply means designing your blog and writing your articles so that Search Engines such as Google and Bing (and hundreds of others) send traffic your way. Primarily, you want to optimize your blog for Google, and ensure your content is excellent so people want to read and share it.

Why should you create an author blog?

You own the blog, and can write whatever you want without fear of tripping some social network censorship trigger. You can safely write about anything as long as you don’t violate the usually loose terms of your blog hosting company and the law.

A blog gives you a “home” on the internet, a place where you can be found, your message can be delivered, and all your other works center around.

Your blog serves as the center of your branding strategy. All posting to social media should be in the form of excepts from and link to materials on your blog.

Your blog is the primary component of your author platform, which is the method you choose to reach your audience. By combining your blog with your email list, videos (possibly a podcast) and other elements, you create a powerful branding, marketing and even selling engine.

All roads to your brand should lead to your blog which is under your control and promotes you.

A blog is a type of website that contains articles, photos, links to videos, and other information about one or more subjects. An author blog specially promotes the ideas, concepts, stories, and materials of an author.

You’ll face several challenges faced when you create and maintain your blog and the associated articles and other materials:

Learning how to use WordPress, a theme, and plugins.

Making the blog friendly to search engines.

Using keyword and phrases to rank first in search engine results for them.

The remainder of this article explains the concepts of SEO for blogs and how they pertain to an author blog in particular.

So get your cup of coffee or tea, sit back, relax and read this article. There is a lot to go over, so allow yourself some time. Be sure to take notes and don’t be afraid to try some of these techniques on your blog.

What Does SEO Cost?

There is a huge number of applications, web sites, books, blogs, seminars, courses, and everything else under the sun to help you with SEO. Some of these products and services are extremely well done, some are okay and serve the purpose, and others are just a flat waste of money and time. I’ve spent the better part of six months looking at many different products, and in this article I’ll present some of the better ones for your evaluation.

Since authors, especially when they are just starting out, don’t generally have a lot of money to spend, I’m focusing on free or very inexpensive products, services and resources.

There are some SEO tools that cost thousands of dollars a month and others that are completely free to use. For the purposes of an author blog, the free tools will work just fine, although a few more manual steps may be required.

What are the minimum costs?

About $50 for paid blog web hosting. Always use paid web hosting. This gives you access to support from the hosting company, which you will need when things go wrong. Also, paid hosting tends to be faster, does not include advertisements, and is generally a better experience for you and your visitors. Finally, and this is vital, free hosting services do not allow you to install plugins, and those are essential for SEO.

Around $10 for a domain name. Note that web hosts include the first year of a domain name for free with their hosting package.

Optionally, you might want to get a premium theme for your blog, since these include support and tend to be faster and look better than the free versions.

That’s it. That’s all you have to pay for to get your blog set up and working. You can find just about everything else you need for free. So, as you can see, you can set up your blog on a budget.

What is a Brand?

Your brand is the way you present yourself to the world. You can either define, cultivate and promote your image or brand, or others will, de facto, define it for you.

It’s very possible to create a blog that portrays more than one brand. My blog, for example, discusses all of my books, which are about a wide variety of subjects as well as the writing and related services that I provide.

For example, ff you write western novels, like Louis L’Amour, then your brand is an author of western fiction. You could narrow this down even further to western fiction focusing on the Arizona area in the mid-1800’s if you’d like.

In general, you should focus your brand as narrowly as you can, because that makes it easier to identify your audience and define your message. This doesn’t mean you must limit your books or the theme of your blog to a single topic. It’s just the overarching image that you portray to the rest of the world.

Once you’ve determined your brand, you can work on what it should look like.

Shapes

Types of images

For example, an author focused on World War II in the Pacific could include images of ships, Marines, airplanes and so forth from that era.

It’s a good idea to spend a little bit of money at this stage and hire a graphics designer for a couple of hours to get some advice. I like to use local business because then I can sit down in front of them, spread out pieces of paper, and we can brainstorm together.

You can also take a look at your competition to see how they show their brand.

Who is Your Audience?

Once you’ve defined your brand, ask yourself, “who is my audience?” Since this article is aimed at writers, your audience is presumably readers of your works,

The more precise you can be at defining your target audience, the better you will be able to write articles, create promotions, and so forth that communicate with them. This will make your promotions and sales efforts more effective.

Trying to target “everyone” or “all businesses” makes it difficult or impossible to reach your readers. On the other hand, if your audience is “people who watch Star Trek”, you’ll be able to focus your blog and articles, and, more importantly, create promotions that actually reach those people.

Find a Good WordPress Host

One of the most important factors for SEO is the speed of your blog. Google, and other search engines, dislike web sites and blogs that are slow.

If you want the pages and posts on your blog to be featured high in the rankings, preferably on the first page for several search terms, you have to ensure that your pages load in under 5 seconds. The faster they load, the better. We’ll talk more about speed shortly.

If your blog is frequently down or getting errors, then Google won’t be able to index your pages, which means they may not appear in the search results at all.

Advertising, which is normal for free or cheap hosting, encourages people to leave your blog. Google keeps track of how long visitors remain on each page, so if they leave quickly, Google takes that to mean the experience for the reader was poor. As a result, your ranking could suffer.

Finally, all web hosts occasionally have problems, and sometimes you might do something on your blog that causes it to crash, perform poorly or not work at all. In those instances you want a web host with good customer support. Free hosts do not provide support.

If you only purchase one thing, pay for your web hosting. I’ve had excellent luck with Siteground, but there are others out there that also do a good job.

How to Set Up Your Blog for SEO

Use WordPress for your blog. Why?

It is specifically designed to handle many of the concerns of SEO.

There are tens of thousands of themes and plugins available to support anything you need.

WordPress is easy to learn.

There are many courses available. If you want to find a few good ones, go to Udemy and search for “WordPress”,

Most web hosts, including Siteground, have a simple, automated way to install WordPress on the host. Use that method to get it done without hassle.

We’re not going to talk about how to set up WordPress itself as that’s beyond the scope of this article. I’ll write a future article to talk about that.

Google Analytics

Optionally, you can set up Google Analytics in order to find out about your visitors and what they do on your site. If you’d rather not confront this now, go ahead and skip this section.

To set it up, head over to Google Analytics. Create an account if needed. Note there is a lot to Google Analytics, and it can be quite confusing. All you need to do is create an account and link your website to it. Once you install the Yoast SEO plugin, it will take care of the rest for you.

Go to https://ift.tt/J2AkKr and click on Access Google Analytics at the top on the right.

After logging in, click on Admin at the top.

In the Property column, click on the drop down and choose Create a new property.

Fill in your website details.

If you want the tracking code, it’s under Property. Click Tracking Info -> Tracking code

You’re done for now. Later, you’ll connect to Google Analytics from the Yoast SEO plugin. This plugin will ensure that the Google Analytics codes are on every page of your blog so your statistics are accurate.

Permalinks are a Vital Component for SEO for Blogs

Go into the Settings -> Permalinks option and set the “Post name” option. This is the best for SEO purposes.

Plugins You Will Need

Plugins are modules (applications) that you install into WordPress to add functionality. Over time, you’ll probably add a dozen or more of them to change the look of your blog, add features (such as book pages), improve SEO or adjust performance.

What is an SEO Plugin? These are plugins specifically designed to help your site be more attractive to Google and other search engines.

These are my recommendations for free WordPress plugins to help you with SEO, plus a few that work well for authors.

Slimstat Analytics – Get the statistics you need to get information about who is accessing your blog and what they are looking at. This does not require or use Google Analytics.

WordPress SEO by Yoast – Install the free version of this plugin, go through the configuration screen, and your blog will be well optimized on a site level for SEO.

WP Smush It – Optimizes the size of your images, making them as small as possible, to speed up your blog.

Remove Query Strings From Static Resources – Get rid of some extraneous junk (query strings) that are not needed. This will speed up your site.

Is Yoast Premium worth it? You’ll have to decide if the price for the premium version of Yoast SEO is worth the cost. I bought it for the redirection feature, which helps prevent 404 errors when the URL for a page has been changed.

Some other plugins that you’ll find useful include:

Comments – wpDiscuz – An extension to the WordPress commenting system that works well.

Contact Form 7 – A simple contact form plugin.

Fancy Author Box – Replaces the author box on posts with a nicer one.

MooBerry Book Manager – This is a great plugin for authors that lets your define a page of information about each of your books. It takes care of formatting that nicely and even defines the schema (a way to organize and define data) to make your books known to Google.

TinyMCE Advanced – Expands the editing capabilities of posts and pages.

WP Revisions Control – Lets you purge old revisions. Otherwise, they tend to remain and build up to unmanageable amounts.

WP-SpamShield – A lot of people use Akismet, which comes with JetPack (a toolbox of several dozen plugins). I prefer WP-SpamShield as I’ve found it is more effective and has less overhead.

I recommend against the following plugins:

Akismet – WP-SpamShield is better.

Jetpack – A toolbox with lots of different uses, but the overhead is high.

Google Analytics for WordPress by MonsterInsights – Connects directly to your Google Analytics account to give your great statistics of your blog traffic. Free version doesn’t have the statistics needed.

WP-Statistics – This plugin has a lot of functionality, but it caused my WordPress to crash. I tried it a year before, when I was on a different web host, and they recommended against using this plugin as it caused problems among their users.

Make sure the following is true for any plugins you install:

Positive reviews. There are always bad reviews, but the majority should be positive. Look over the reviews as sometimes an older version of a plugin received negative reviews due to a problem which has been fixed.

Still supported – Do not install anything which has not been verified as working for your current version of WordPress.

Create Great Content

Now we come to the “secret” for successful blogs.

If you want your blog to succeed, create good content.

Assuming your hosting is fast and your blog has been set up properly, the most important thing you can do is create good content. In fact, not just good content, but fantastic content that people want to read and share with their friends.

This is true with your blog as well as your books and anything else you write. All of your content must be incredible.

Think of these questions before and while you are writing:

Does this reinforce my brand?

Is it appropriate for my audience?

Does it solve a problem (or problems) for your audience? Does it teach them something? Does it provide good entertainment?

Is it something that will be shared by your audience?

When you are finished, have you done the best job possible?

Is the grammar and spelling perfect?

By creating great content, people will want to read it, share it and come back to see what else you’ve done. Search engines take note of traffic patterns, including clicks coming from social media such as Facebook, and assume that if people remain on your site they like your articles.

Conversely, if your content is bad, people will not stay as long, and Google will downgrade your pages and posts.

Stop Selling

While you can (and should) sell your books, services and products from your blog, your articles should give high-quality information that helps your audience solve their problems, entertains them, or provides some other service for them.

Don’t sell in your articles. Instead, freely give information.

Don’t mistake this to mean you shouldn’t sell your books, products and services on your blog. Your blogs should be written to freely give excellent value at no cost. Other pages in your blog can be used to sell if you like. For example, the pages about your books and products will obviously be sales oriented. However, an article about your characters or topics shouldn’t sell.

Keywords

In the good old days, all you needed to do was stuff your page with all of the keywords that you wanted to be listed for in the search engines. There were many sites where each page consisted of a short article followed by invisible (hidden with shading and coloring) lists of hundreds upon hundreds of keywords.

That technique no longer works. In fact, that will get your site booted from the index.

Today, search engines are much smarter, and they are getting more intelligent all of the time.

Your safest course is to use 100% white hat SEO. This means create good content with key words and phrases used naturally (organically) within the text, image tags and so on. Don’t try to fool the search engines using any spammy techniques. Period. The safest strategy is to assume you will be caught if you attempt to use subversive, black hat SEO techniques,

So what are the SEO keyword best practices you need to follow?

When you write an article, determine the main phrases and words that apply. For example, the keyword for this article is “SEO for Blogs” and “Optimize your Blog for Google”. Those keywords appear in the title and within the text a few times (no more than four or so). That’s what’s great about the Yoast SEO plugin – it will tell you the optimum number of times to include your keyword.

Now figure out a few dozen other keywords and phrases related to your topic. You can use LSI Graph for help.

These tools will suggest a list of phrases that you can use in your text. By doing this, you tell your readers and the search engines more about the topic of your article.

Additionally, these are what are called Long Tail keywords, meaning they are short phrases occasionally used for searching. The idea is that it’s virtually impossible to rank highly for a single- or two-word phrase. There’s just too much competition. However, you can rank highly for longer phrases, and you can include a lot of those phrases within your article. That’s one reason why longer is better – you can include more long tail keywords.

As of this writing,

“SEO” gets 110,000 searches per month

“SEO for blogs” gets 210 searches each month.

“how to optimize your blog for SEO” has 27 searches per month.

This article will never rank on the first page (or even the 100th) for SEO. There are thousands of sites trying to rank for that keyword. However, it can rank for “SEO for blogs” and “how to optimize your blog for SEO”, and for those, the article will probably appear on the first search page.

The idea is to get on the first page for as many long tail keywords as you can without making the article read awkwardly. For a 2,000 word article, get 50 or 60 keywords that get 30 or so searches each month.

Forums and blogs related to your subject

Keep Your Blog Constantly Up-To-Date

It is vital that you put out excellent quality content on a regular basis.

I write one major article of 2,000 to 4,000 words every week, and a smaller, 300 to 600 word article every day.

In addition to adding new content, you need to be updating and modifying older articles. Information changes and your site needs to reflect that as well.

One thing you can do that will have a great effect is to cross-link your articles. Older articles can be modified to reference newer articles with similar information and vice versa. This gives your visitors even more value because they can find additional information if they want.

SEO On Page Optimization

What is on page SEO? This is everything that you do that is contain on the page of the article (post) on your blog.

The topic of on-page SEO is huge, and could take up a dozen books all on it’s own. Because of that, we’re only going to hit the highlights here.

We’ve already discussed the need for great content, but it bears repeating because that is the most important factor.

if you have great content, you’ve done much of the work needed for good results in the search engines.

For your text, keep the following in mind.

Put your main keyword or phrase in the first and last 100 words of your article.

Include that keyword a couple of times in the rest of the article (depending on the length).

Research long tail keywords that make sense for your article and use them liberally throughout.

Include the keyword in your page URL.

Include the keyword in your meta description.

Your page should include one (and only one) H1 tag (you’ll see this as “heading 1” in the style menu of the WordPress editor.) Include your keyword in that header. Generally, in most themes, the title of the article is used as the H1 tag so you don’t have to worry about it.

Use H2 through H6 tags (“heading 2” through “heading 6”) to break your article into subtopics. Ensure these are in the correct sequence. For example, H1 is followed by H2 is followed by H3, and not H1 followed by H3.

Never skip headings.

Links Internal and External

Include links to external sites as needed. Authors should always cite their sources, so follow the same rules when you write articles for your blog. Of course, you don’t bother with the style guidelines from APA, MLA or CMS. Just link to the web page you used as a source.

Internal links are just as important. You should reference your other blog posts and pages as needed to support the topic of your article.

Ensure your links work and don’t lead to dead air. Google will drop your site in ranking if it detects too many broken links, internal or external.

You don’t have to check manually. You can use the free utility at Broken Link Check.

Image SEO

Include images that help your readers understand your content. Infographics are excellent, and videos also work well.

Rename the filenames of your images before you upload them to something that makes sense. For example, I took a picture with my camera and the image was called DCS2456.jpg. I renamed that to “closeup image of my flower garden with honey bees.jpg”. This gives the search engines more context about the image.

Include ALT and TITLE tags that describe the image when you upload it into WordPress using the media center.

By naming the image and including the ALT and TITLE tags, you give Google and other search engines the information they need to understand what the image means and how it relates to your article.

Before uploading, compress your image so it is as small as possible. For jpg files, for example, you can set the compression or optimization level when you save it.

Video SEO

By including video in your blog, you can increase the amount of time your visitors stay on your page. People like videos, especially if they are well made or funny.

How to effectively use video for SEO purposes is a subject for a future article.

However, by including video you make your blog more attractive and more favorable to Google.

Off Page SEO

What is off page optimization? This is links from other web sites and blogs to articles and the home page of your own blog. The act of getting those links is called link building.

Links to your site tell Google that other people believe your content has value. In other words, links give you credibility.

Google and other search engines absolutely love links; after all, that’s the whole purpose behind the web – to link information together. Get as many high-quality links as you can, but be careful not to do it all at once. Take your time, a few links a day at the most. More than that might cause Google to get the idea you are using spam techniques to get those links.

What is a high quality link? These are links from sites that:

Do not engage in spam techniques.

Do not contain malware.

Have high quality standards for their content.

Have high traffic.

Links to information sources for the most part.

Has a good presence on social media.

The best links are from authorities in your niche. For example, an authority link for a writing blog would be a link from Writers Digest or from the blog of a well-known author or speaker.

Other link building tips include:

Get an account on Help A Reporter out and submit regularly. You’ll get picked up by a few reporters and earn links back to your site.

Get to know people in your niche and, after they begin to know, like and trust you, ask for links to your site.

Win awards for your writing.

Get a column in an online newsletter.

Become a speaker for a conference or event (they will list a link to your website in most cases.)

Join local groups in your city and get your profile added to their membership directory.

You get the idea? You have to spend time creating content for other people. This is almost always done without compensation.

I typically spend an hour a day building links to my site.

Things you should avoid like the plague:

Buying or selling links.

Link exchange farms.

Paying for blog comments, forum comments or other spam techniques.

Anything else that seems the least bit spammy.

You will get some spam links to your site, but as long as the majority are legitamate, you’ll be fine.

Guest Blogging

One of the best ways to get inbound links to your blog is to write guest blogs on other sites. If you happen to get a guest post on a high traffic site you can gain an incredible amount of traffic. Once you have a few of these, especially if the sites have high authority, then Google will take notice and raise your site up in the rankings.

Guest blogging is one of the best, fastest ways to get high quality inbound links.

How do you get the chance to guest blog?

Your site has to be of exceptional quality that gives good value. This will be attractive to other bloggers.

Your writing has to be very good.

If you have influence or are well known in the industry of the blogger, you’ll have a better chance of being granted a guest blog appearance.

You will need to ask for the opportunity. This requires that you do a little networking, get to know the blogger and let them know you before you ask them for the favor.

While high-traffic authority sites are the best places for guest blogs, you can start by asking other authors in your niche for the opportunity. This will give you practice nad build a few links back to your site.

How long should you make your guest post? You can ask the blogger for direction, although they’ll usually answer it’s up to you. Just make sure you deliver extremely high quality work that’s as long as necessary to make the point. By doing this, you build your reputation and work your way up to higher traffic sites.

Blog Commenting

One very effective technique, if you do it correctly, is to comment on blogs within your niche.

When you do this, always read the article fully, understand it, and give an intelligent comment in the blog. Usually there is a place for you to include a link to your site. If not, include it within the text of your comment.

Never leave comments like:

Great job.

Fantastic article.

I know what you mean.

And so on. Leave a few sentences at least, and a few paragraphs if you have enough to say. In other words, ensure you provide some value to the blogger.

Never purchase blog comments. That is spamming.

Only include one link in your comment.

Never leave negative comments. Like the old saying goes, if you don’t have anything good to say, don’t say anything at all.

Forums Related to your Brand and Message

It’s a great idea to find forums that are related to your brand or niche. This should be a part of your normal networking habits.

Read these forums regularly and get involved in the conversations. You’ll meet people, which may lead to guest blogging opportunities, link exchanges, and even paid writing jobs. That’s all a normal part of networking.

Ensure you know the rules for the forum. Some allow links, some don’t, and others only allow them under certain circumstances. Follow the rules of the forum. If links are allowed, use them sparingly.

If the forum has the ability to create a signature, use that space for a link to your site.

Don’t spam forums. Post intelligent comments, link only occasionally, and take part on conversations.

Leverage your Social Media Accounts

Being active on social media is a very important factor in your efforts to get traffic to your blog.

Create a Facebook page for your brand and use that to deliver your posts to your Facebook audience.

Post links to your articles (on your blog as well as guest posts elsewhere) on your Twitter feed. Additionally, share the love and post links to posts of interest on other blogs. Use hashtags to spread the word out even more.

Always post a link to every page and post to Google+. I’ve found that Google adds anything posted to Google+ more quickly than otherwise.

Post links to your articles on LinkedIn.

Join groups (or communities or whatever they are called) on the social media and become part of conversations. This will expand your professional network and you’ll find many others who will be happy to help you. Keep in mind that you should give at least twice what you receive.

By doing this,you’ll gain organic traffic directly from social media, and you’ll also build a network of people of similar interests who can help you on your journey.

Google considers social media traffic a very important part of determining the importance of your page. This is a factor in ranking your blog on search pages.

Check your site occasionally using the following tools.

OnPage.Org

SEO Site Checkup

All of these may be freely used, although they also have paid versions. For most author blogs, the free ones work fine.l

You may find that you get a lot of errors when you first run these tools. Just fix a few at a time until your site is pristine.

The more your site is in compliance with these tools, the more likely it will be that it is indexed and ranks well.

Conclusions

Does that sound like a lot of work?

No one ever said blogging is easy. In fact, you may find building your blog and getting traffic to take far more time than it did to write your book. SEO for blogs requires constant effort.

Allocate some time each day to create new content, build your professional network, and drive traffic to your blog. You definitely need to ensure you optimize your blog for Google, but you shouldn’t depend on Google to send you traffic.

Always engage in white hat, ethical SEO. If it seems even the least bit spammy, don’t do it. The search engines have become very intelligent about finding spam, and if they determine your site is trying to fool them, you’ll be lowered in rank or banned entirely. And that won’t help your traffic at all.

The most important fact to remember:

Excellent content is the cornerstone of blog SEO. If your content is of bad quality, your site will not rank well. On the other hand, if your content is fantastic, people will want to read and share it, and that will make your site rank.
