The radio on Merlin’s shoulder crackled, and he quickly turned it down. The forest was quiet, and Merlin’s magic hadn’t detected anything besides animals in a mile radius, but that didn’t mean he was going to let a radio give away his position. He crouched down and waited for a minute, listening to the sounds of the forest around him. The pack of supplies dug into his shoulder, but with only a mile left to go, he knew he had better keep it on his back and feel the relief later, rather than try to get it back on his sore back.

With another quick spell to ensure that no one was around, Merlin continued on his route. His boots crunched in the autumn leaves and the air was crisp. Merlin could feel the magic in the forest like electricity before a storm.

There was limited access to electricity in the forest, it was mostly used for lights and any emergency medical equipment that Gaius needed. Otherwise everyone endured without it and magic was used when it wasn’t being used to defend the camp. Before the war, the thought of living without constant electricity seemed unreal, but after three years of living in the forest and running supplies between encampments, it was hard for Merlin to remember what life was like before.

When Merlin pictured the end of the war, the only luxuries he longed for was a warm bed and a large bath. Mostly he wished for his people to be free once again.

When Merlin entered the edge of the camp, he felt the wards shimmer around his form. Although invisible to most people, Merlin could always see the magic, it glimmered in the light like dust motes in a sunbeam. As soon as he passed through the wards he heard the commotion. His hackles raised and instinctually looked around for danger, before he realized that the sound wasn’t screams of fear but rather the raucous sounds of celebration.

The supplies tent was at the back of the encampment, where it could best be protected. Merlin wound his way around the tents until he found the large green tent. When he stepped inside, he was greeted by a young Druid woman, Ferridel.

“What’s happened?”

“Oh Merlin, you’ve returned. The battalion came back with news of victory while you were gone. We’ve taken the valley.”

Merlin nodded, his heart racing in his chest. Too many questions to ask, he was left dumb.

Merlin dropped off the supplies, but he was too anxious to stay and speak with Ferridel. He rushed to the center of camp, where a large bonfire was blazing and soldiers were gathered with tankards in hand. Their coats and rifles were strewn about the benches around the bonfire. Some soldiers raised their hands in greeting, but Merlin was looking for a familiar face.

“Looking for someone?”

Merlin whipped around to see exactly who he was looking for.

“Arthur,” Merlin said, his breath leaving him in a whisper.

Arthur smiled, looking far too pleased with himself as he cocked his head to one side. “You look awful, Merlin. What have you been doing? Rolling in the dirt while we fight this war?”

“You’re an ass,” Merlin said, but his harsh words were soon softened as he engulfed Arthur in a tight embrace. Arthur’s arms wrapped around him and he could feel Arthur shake a little. Despite his bravado, Arthur wasn’t a fool. Every time he stepped onto that battle field, it could be the end. Merlin knew that when Arthur left last month, it could have been his last time seeing his best friend’s smile.

Arthur pulled back and gripped Merlin’s shoulder, “Now you look like a man who could use a nice glass of scotch.”

“You have scotch?” Merlin said.

Arthur tilted his head towards the residential tents. “Come on,” He tugged on Merlin’s jacket.

Before Merlin knew it, Arthur had gotten Merlin a warm basin of water and a large pile of food. As Captain of the battalion, Arthur was granted some privileges, and usually Merlin would tell Arthur he was a spoiled prince for it, but now the warm water felt nice and the Merlin was starving. When he was travelling between encampments Merlin usually only ate jerky and whatever bread hadn’t gone stale.

As Merlin ate, Arthur told him about the battle. He was brief, very limited in his details. Merlin was grateful. He hated hearing about battle plans but he also knew that for every positive note Arthur said about the battle, there was a price they had paid. Merlin knew that as the men celebrated their victory, they also mourned their fallen brethren.

“So where is this infamous scotch?”

Arthur smiled, crooked and sly. He opened up a trunk and pulled aside clothes that cushioned a large bottle of amber liquid. Merlin raised his brow. Alcohol was hard to come by nowadays. Merlin ran essential supplies between encampments, and alcohol was rarely on that list.

Arthur cut the wax seal with his pocket knife and poured a heavy serving for both of them.

“To victory,” Arthur raised his glass.

“To freedom,” Merlin said, and clanked his glass against Arthur’s.

The scotch was warm as it ran down his throat. He coughed, not used to the feeling anymore. Arthur laughed at him and pounded his back. They drank and told each other stories of friends and foes alike. They talked about before the war and they dreamed about afterwards. Soon enough, both of them were laughing in drunken delight. Perhaps on a different night the scotch would have made them somber. But not tonight, after an essential victory.

Music had started to play outside and Merlin could hear the shuffle of people dancing and drunkenly singing along to the music.

Arthur stood on unsteady feet, a warm smile on his face as he reached for Merlin.

“What are you doing?” Merlin laughed as Arthur hauled him to his feet.

“Dance with me, Merlin,” Arthur whined, pouting like a spoiled child.

“You don’t want to see me dance, Arthur. You know how clumsy I am.”

“That’s not true,” Arthur pouted. His hands had settled on Merlin’s waist. He was warm from the alcohol, and it burned Merlin to be this close to the sun. “You’re not clumsy when you do magic. Come on, do some magic for me.”

“You’re such a spoiled prat.” Merlin held his hands against Arthur’s chest, but did not push him away. Despite his words, Merlin was not one to deny Arthur anything, especially when he was inebriated. So he let his magic loose. Dozens of small lights filled the tent, bobbing in the air like fireflies.

“Beautiful,” Arthur said, but he hadn’t turned his head to look at the lights.

The song outside was slow, but the tune was uplifting. Arthur took Merlin’s hands off his chest, cradling one in his palm and the other he slid up so that it rested against Arthur’s shoulder. They danced, albeit horribly, but nonetheless they did dance. Merlin stumbled over his own feet and Arthur did not know how to keep a beat, but they laughed and that was more important than skill.

As the music dwindled, they heard cheers outside. Someone was speaking to the crowd by the bonfire. Then someone started playing a somber tune, the same they always played at the end of any victory or defeat. They lost men, no matter the outcome. Their mood had changed just as quickly as the songs had changed.

Merlin felt his throat close up. He reached up to touch Arthur’s face, cradling his jaw in his palm.

“Thank the gods,” Merlin said, the rest of his sentence stuck in his throat. The thought of losing Arthur was too overwhelming, any words to express it were lost to Merlin.

“I’m right here,” Arthur said, holding Merlin’s wrist, “I’ll always be here.”

Merlin shook his head, “You can’t promise that.”

“I’ll always come back to you.”

Merlin shook his head, feeling tears run down his cheek even as he closed his eyes against them. He was always an easy crier, and usually Arthur would make fun of him for it. But Arthur stayed silent this time.

“Oh, Merlin. I hate when you do this…” Arthur shook off Merlin’s hand and cradled Merlin’s face in his own hands, wiping the tears with his thumbs. “I fight this war for you… For your freedom. For your happiness. One day, I will never see you cry again.”

Before Merlin could answer, Arthur leaned forward and pressed a soft kiss to Merlin’s cheek and then pulled away and kissed the other, right at the edge of his lips.

Merlin gripped Arthur’s wrists, his eyes flickering between Arthur’s trying to read his expression. But he was so grimmly serious, as if Arthur was vowing that he would fight every enemy soldier himself just to protect Merlin.

“Live through this war...that’s what will make me happy.”

“I will,” Arthur vowed with a solemn nod.

Just a few inches of air separated them, but they felt like miles. Arthur looked Merlin in the eye, and then down, and before Merlin could register what was happening, Arthur was kissing him. Merlin gripped him tight, feeling Arthur’s hands tighten on his jaw.

Arthur pulled back, “Is this...? Are you alright with…?”

“And you say I talk too much,” Merlin said, and shut him up with a kiss.

Arthur finds out about Merlin's magic while coming back from Morgause in The Sins of the Father AU for the headcanons

Ooooo this is such a cool idea!

Merlin actually tells him in angry! He didn’t mean to it just sort of happened.

Merlin is trying to explain why he shouldn’t trust Morgause as they travel back to Camelot. That she clearly has an agenda and is using him! Arthur states that Merlin doesn’t know what he’s talking about and he’s just anti-magic and it sort of slips out.

The look of horror on Merlin’s face as he realizes what he’s just told Arthur is how Arthur knows it’s true and suddenly he forgot his father entirely. All the anger is gone and only shock is left.

“What?”

This leads to a very long night of Merlin trying to explain well, everything. His magic, why he came to Camelot, the dragon, their destinies, all the magic stuff that’s happened, and why he doesn’t trust Morgause. Arthur going through a vast amount of emotions: he’s angry, sad, hurt, guilty, and back to furious. It’s a very long night.

Finally Merlin asks what Arthur is going to do with him.

Arthur is quiet before he asks, “what would you do if I sentence you to death?”

Merlin has wondered this himself many times, sometimes he thinks he would escape, run far away, other times hid in the shadows to fulfill his destiny, and sometimes, sometimes he thinks he’d let Arthur kill him. That one scares him though.

He replies honestly, “I don’t know… but I know I wouldn’t hurt you. If it came down to it, hurt you or die, I’d chose you.”

Arthur stares at him a minute before quietly answering, “well then it’s a good thing I could never sentence you to death, couldn't hurt you either.”

Merlin laughs there. Teasingly reminds him of all the times Arthur thrown goblets at his head.

Arthur scoffed, “those don’t count Merlin.”

Merlin asks what he’s going to do about his father.

Arthur is still so confused about everything but learning Merlin’s secret has calmed him. “I don’t know.”

Okay so I just had a THOUGHT. In fics there are often scenes where Merlin steals bites of Arthur’s food (and I think there is a scene in the show where Arthur comments that Merlin does it besides the Freya episode) but what if the reason Merlin does it isn’t because he feels like it or is fucking with Arthur but actually because he’s checking to make sure no one’s poisoned Arthur’s food.

Like what if sometimes in S1 Merlin catches or suspects someone bribing the royal food taster to poison Arthur’s food after he taste it.

Everyone knows Merlin is kind of a disaster/overworked and sometimes is late to pickup Arthur’s food. The taster uses this to his advantage and after everyone sees him taste the food he “watches the food” while waiting for Merlin to come pick it up and poisons it while the cooks are busy/not paying attention.

Merlin unsure when and which food the taster is poisoning just starts taking bits of all of Arthur’s food until a few days after he starts tasting Arthur’s food he collapses because YUP that was poison all right!

Gaius thankfully gives him the antidote and because this is fucking BBC Merlin, they tells Arthur that Merlin had a simple cold. Arthur complains that Merlin should have told him earlier but let’s him rest up, saying he expects Merlin back to work tomorrow.

Merlin gets rid of the taster (tells him he knows what he did and gets him to leave Camelot) & the briber but after that incident becomes paranoid about the royal tasters so keeps tasting all of Arthur’s food.

As time goes on though he stops trying to hide the fact that he’s doing it. Arthur just rolls his eyes at Merlin and kind of goes ‘ugh whatever’ because he’s Merlin.

Years go by and then one day Arthur finds some delicious treat in his room and smirks thinking he finally beat Merlin to the food and takes a bite then promptly collapses (idk how fast poison works y’all).

Arthur wakes up in his bed with a furious Merlin sitting at his side who after calling for someone to get Gaius and checking to make sure Arthur is okay starts yelling at him for eating the food before Merlin’s check it. And this is how Arthur finds out, that all these years Merlin wasn’t being a terrible servant and just Merlin, but has been putting his life on the line for him every fucking day.

Arthur knows that Merlin is a worrier, after all Merlin was always trying to talk him out of tournaments and quests that had any potential danger in them but he hadn’t realized Merlin would go this far. He is immediately horrified and furious.

He yells at Merlin that that isn’t his job and Merlin ends up telling him about the time he caught one the royal tasters getting bribed starting his whole tasting career.

Arthur of course is furious that Merlin didn’t tell him back then and Merlin just shrugged and said he didn’t think anyone would believe him back then.

This leads to Arthur feeling guilty for thinking that Merlin was just being a terrible servant and wonders what else has Merlin been doing silently in service to him that he hasn’t noticed?

(Alternatively, the one where Arthur tries to reconcile being jealous and selfless at the same time, Merlin tries to fix an imagined fuck-up, and Gwaine just is an A+ friend to both of them.)

Note: Gwaine being Gwaine and Arthur being an idiot lmao… the plot-twist is quite surprising to be honest! Really fun read.

142 REASONS MERTHUR IS REAL

I wrote this list a looong time ago but life got in the way so I never finished it. It’s still unfinished but I figured I could share anyway, since I don’t think I’ll start on it again.

Long live the Merlin fandom!

Merlin said “I love you” to Arthur in 5.13

Arthur said it back.

Arthur pulled Merlin into an almost-kiss before he died.

They were holding hands when Arthur died.

In 5.13, while they were having a moment, the BBC Merlin romantic theme song played in the background.

Arthur waited 1500 years in Avalon.

Merlin waited 1500 years on earth.

Merthur-haters hated the finale because they said it was too centered around Merlin and Arthur’s relationship and not the plot.

They held hands four times in 3.12.

Arthur is going to rise when Merlin needs him the most (the dragon said for Albion, but after 1500 years, Merlin becomes the last remaining piece of Albion.)

Arthur is basically rising from the dead through sheer force of will because of his love for Merlin. He won’t do this for his wife, his knights, Gaius, nor his kingdom. Just for Merlin.

So.. Arthur loves Merlin more than Camelot.

Arthur loves Merlin more than he loves himself.

Arthur loves Merlin more than he hates magic.

Arthur loves Merlin more than he loves himself.

Arthur loves Merlin more than anything.

These feelings are reciprocated.

The creator said they “genuinely thought of the episode as a love story between two men… It absolutely is a love story,”

...and also that their relationship was “the heart of the show.”

So basically Merlin was all about their gay love story. Got it.

Katie McGrath said that the creator had “confirmed” Merlin and Arthur’s love after he called them a love story (haters, don’t kid yourself, their platonic love didn’t need ANY sort of confirmation.)

She also said that she was glad the big fandom debate was finally put to rest (hmm.. wonder what that was?? Oh right, the giant debate has always been whether or not Merthur was romantic..)

Merlin and Arthur are continuously called a love story (by the creator, cast, official ads… the gay is strong.)

In the middle of season 5, when Bradley was asked, “Way back in season one, you told us that you thought Merlin’s bromance with Arthur was way more important than Guinevere’s romance. Given the changes, is that still the case?” he said, “For the show, then yes, the bromance is more important. For Arthur, I think when you find someone in your life whom you love more than anything, you’ll do anything for them. And I believe that Arthur would do anything for them.” Bradley avoids directly saying Gwen is more important, even AVOIDING USING GENDER-SPECIFIC PRONOUNS.

Merlin is always looking at Arthur’s crotch. He’s a bottom.

Arthur is always looking at Merlin’s ass. He’s a top.

Merlin moaned Arthur’s name in his sleep.

Arthur moaned Merlin’s name in his sleep.

So.. they dream about each other.

And their dreams are vivid enough that they say each other’s names out loud. Ok then.

They look at each other’s lips a lot. In contrast, I don’t even look at any of my friends’ lips, ever, and I don’t notice any other friends doing it either???

When Arthur pictures his perfect life, he pictures it on a farm away from everyone with just him and Merlin (worth noting: when he enclosed this, it was to his girlfriend… on their date.)

He also wants to run away with Merlin to said farm. And yes, he told Gwen this, too. No, he didn’t imply that she would be there at all.

When Arthur proposed to Gwen, he had to have Merlin with him but because it would be indecent, he had Merlin hide behind curtains..

Arthur forgot his and Gwen’s anniversary,

even though Gwen reminded him a month before.

And even Merlin remembered his anniversary before he did and had to remind him..

But yet Arthur remembered exactly how many days it’d been since his best friend smiled.

Oh, and on the anniversary date, Arthur brought Merlin along. Of course. (You’d think he’d try to make it as romantic as possible since he y’know, forgot about it. But he can’t stand to be away from Merlin for even a second.)

They’re canon soulmates.

It’s also canon that Merthur is destiny.

Merlin routinely sees Arthur naked. When his girlfriend did, he reacted quite negatively.

Everyone in the castle treats Merlin like he’s Arthur’s mistress, and he gets the castle mistress privileges as well.

Arthur thinks Merlin is gay (in his mind, Merlin has the stereotypical gay traits-- feminine and a crossdresser-- and then in a scene that wasn’t played off comically, Arthur asked why Merlin was walking with a limp after going out with a “girl”-- he emphasized “girl,” not me), therefore Arthur must have known Merlin’s feelings for him, yet he continued to let his very gay best friend see him naked and dress and undress him.

Even when he thought Merlin was gay AND a horny virgin (“You have led a sheltered life, you have no social skills whatsoever, and Catrina is, I admit, an attractive woman. I understand completely”), he still let Merlin see him naked… knowing full well that Merlin, this apparently horny gay virgin, cares about him more than any other guy… Arthur’s basically asking to be boned. (C’mon Merlin, get the hint!!)

The night Merlin thought he wouldn’t see Arthur again, he missed him so much that he made a Pendragon dragon out of fire at his camp.

Merlin almost admitted his feelings to Arthur, saying “I know it’s hard for you to understand how I feel..” and it was only after Arthur made a very shocked and dismayed face, did Merlin quickly change tack and made a joke out of it.

Arthur admitted that Merlin could break his heart. And Merlin was crying. And it was super romantic.

So Arthur basically admitted he loved Merlin, because a heart can’t break if it never loved.

Arthur said that the knights were like his friends and brothers, but then he also said that Merlin was his only friend, in which he was effectively putting Merlin above the knights, above friends, and above brothers… So… what’s the spot above all that in which Merlin apparently inhabits within the King’s heart? (hint: g-a-y-l-o-v-e)

Arthur stabbed Merlin’s first love to death.. I sense some jealousy. ;) (Ok fine, I admit, he didn’t know who she was when he did it but it’s still kind of funny in a weird dark sort of way that’s actually really sad and not actually funny at all when you see Merlin crying. ;u;)

Arthur’s father said that Merlin and Arthur’s bond went “beyond the line of duty.” That’s so gay.

Arthur always listens to Merlin when he tells him not to marry someone, even if it’s last minute and the bride is literally waiting at the altar. I’m 10,000% sure if he’d wanted, Merlin could’ve easily convinced Arthur not to marry Gwen as well. Even when his Gwen was consistently upset about him marrying Elena, he was going to until Merlin told him not to. It’s almost like he doesn’t care who he marries as long as Merlin’s by his side and approves of the wife.

In the finale, Arthur had to choose between his wife or Merlin, and he chose Merlin, even giving Gwen back their wedding ring.

About that scene, the creator said, “There goes his heterosexuality.”

Arthur’s uncle asked him to give up on Gwen, so he broke up with her. Arthur’s uncle asked him to give up on Merlin, and he shut his uncle up mid-sentence. Gwen asked him to give up on Merlin and he said “You’re not going to change my mind.” No surprise there.

Arthur barely spends any time alone with Gwen and when he does, he turns almost every conversation they have into something about Merlin. Obsessed much??

All their sexual innuendos.

One time Merlin implied that he was Arthur’s true love (he said Arthur was a toad but that since magic was outlawed, he would never turn into a handsome prince, and we all know the toad gets turned into a prince only by the magic of true love’s kiss,... and Merlin was implying that he would have been the one to turn Arthur back.)

Merlin fondly calls Arthur “cabbagehead,” and in modern language that roughly translates to “sweetie-head.”

There’s an anime called Fate’s Stay Night where the main characters are King Arthur (a woman) and her male lover Shiro. In it, Arthur waited thousands of years in Avalon before seeing Shiro (BBC’s Arthur waited 1500 years in Avalon before seeing Merlin) and Shiro (again, Shiro is the lover, even though Gwen was also in the anime) was doomed to hopelessly search thousands of years for Arthur (ahem MERLIN)! This makes me wonder if BBC Merlin’s ending and the Merlin/Arthur love story (instead of Arthur/Gwen) isn’t all that uncommon in Arthurian myth.. Merthur coincided a little too perfectly with Arthur/Shiro.

Merlin would do anything Arthur says. Anything. With emphasis. (That scene is so filthy-sounding i can’t even rewatch it with parents around.)

Arthur can recognize Merlin by just his eyes but not his own sister whom he grew up with.

Merlin splashed pee into Arthur’s mouth and his only punishment was an “i will so kill you for this but will never actually do anything about it” glare. If that’s not true love, I don’t know what is.

They’re always doing super domestic stuff together.

Arthur associates flowers with romance, yet asked Merlin where Merlin’s flowers for him where..

And then while they were talking about these flowers, Merlin did magic in front of him and a scroll FLEW OFF THE TABLE, fell to the floor, made a pretty audible ‘thump’ noise, and Arthur (trained alert knight) didn’t even notice despite it happening inches away from him because he was so engrossed in this flowers talk.

When Merlin pulled Arthur’s pants down, he didn’t just pull down his pants, he (very unnecessarily) pulled down everything.

And unlike what he usually does, he didn’t need a spell to pull them down.. Almost like the act of unclothing his King came naturally to his magic?

After he married Gwen, Arthur began sleeping with his shirt on instead of off like usual.. Decidedly not the actions of a straight man.

But then whenever he’s with Merlin, his shirt just comes right off. Even Bradley said, “I’ll find myself setting out to do a scene and it’ll be a scene where I’m just having a chat with Merlin, and then one of the script editors will come down and say, “We’ve had a message from production: Bradley’s going to do this scene with his top off.” That’s what I call good writing.

Most of Arthur’s kisses with Gwen are super chaste, and even the longer ones aren’t all that passionate. Instead he keeps staring at Merlin’s lips.

Arthur is always staring at Merlin, especially when he thinks Merlin isn’t looking.

Merlin does the same thing.

And they have tons and tons of eyesex.

Sometimes they’ll look away really quickly when the other catches them staring.

Sometimes when they’re having a moment, it’s so powerful that Merlin is near-tears with the depth of his feeling.

Aithusa is basically their daughter.

Merlin and Arthur are really touchy-feely.

And they have lingering touches.

Arthur’s mind is in the gutter a lot.

Even when Arthur is told to go on quests and missions alone, he brings Merlin. Probably because he doesn’t see him and Merlin as a separate being. They are, after all, two sides of the same coin. Soulmates.

Merlin and Arthur are scarily co-dependent.

Which makes their waiting/separation even more depressing.

The entire series was only the prologue of Merlin and Arthur’s eternal love story.

The deleted scenes were mostly all Merthur stuff. Almost like their own mini-series in the behind-the-scenes.

When Arthur was dying, it seemed like he didn’t even remember Gwen. He didn’t mention her or ask Merlin to get a message back to her, nothing. In his mind, it was just him and Merlin at the end of it all.

Bradley and Colin purposely, intentionally played Merlin and Arthur as homoerotic gay closet cases. Some things Merlin and Arthur did was attributed to Brolin, but there are other things that were just in no way not intentional, because Bradley and Colin are PROFESSIONAL. ACTORS. They know and control every little part of the slightest twitch of the lips to a crinkle in the eyes to match their characters. Some things are Brolin, but other more obvious things (like staring at lips for example) were likely done purposely, because I think Bradley and Colin are good enough as actors to know exactly what they’re doing.

Arthur are Merlin are listed officially as tsunderes on tvtropes.org… and 99% of the time, tsunderes are people who treat the ones they’re in love with badly in order to hide their true feelings (Arthur is a Type A tsundere-- which is the typical type-- and Merlin is Type B, meaning he is generally sweet and friendly but his hidden angry side is triggered by the love interest.)

On the site, it says that Type B tsunderes tend to appear in a relationship of the “Belligerent Sexual Tension” types. Those relationships are defined as such: “There’s a couple, usually a sometimes sweet, sometimes grouchy female paired with a secretly-kind jerk, who are not able to admit their feelings. At the top of their lungs. Despite the conflict, there is an attraction. This is usually obvious to everyone around except the couple. Confront them with the obvious, they’ll deny deny deny. Sometimes they will progress to admitting their friendship but insist they are "just friends.” Eventually, they can admit their feelings to practically anyone except their loved one. It ends up where both characters dance around admitting their feelings as if the words “I love you” are some sort of death curse, much to the frustration of the audience and the other characters. If there is a Love Epiphany with one of these characters (hmm…such as when Merlin and Arthur held hands?), expect it to change almost nothing, at least in the short term. Expect this couple to be popular with the fandom.“

No matter how many times Merlin saves his life, Arthur never knights him, probably due to thinking that Merlin is only tiny and always wanting an excuse to have to protect him and never let Merlin out from under his wing.

Wanting an excuse to protect him is probably why Arthur usually doesn’t give Merlin a sword on their quests.

Merlin once said to Arthur, “Look what we’ve got.” Arthur asked, “What..?” And he replied, “You and.. (long pause for dramatic gay effect).. me?”

Under Arthur’s character on wikipedia, it says, “There are even indications of him being in love with Merlin although the writers denied it throughout the filming of the show.”

The gay in Merlin isn’t played off as comical.

And it isn’t made fun of.

And characters always acknowledge their beautiful relationship.

After seeing them together for only a couple days, Merlin’s mom told him she thought they were soulmates and needed to stay together. Merlin agreed. (This was freaking season one.)

With the creator’s final comments and with everything we know, it’s more than safe to say that Merlin and Arthur had a happily ever after, had lots of mind-blowing sex, got married, and all that other good jazz.

It’s kind of telling that the first time Merlin disguises himself as a girl, he immediately takes this opportunity to flirt with Arthur.

That’s pretty solid proof that if Merlin had been a girl, he and Arthur would’ve gotten together so fast. Haters that say otherwise couldn’t be more wrong.

When Merlin and Arthur were stuck in that net together, they probably had boners for hours, which would be the only explanation as to how they both forgot Arthur’s sword could cut rope until night time.

And when Merlin said, “Don’t put your knee there!” it was probably on his raging boner, because then right afterward he was moaning pretty sexually.

And then they fell asleep in each other’s arms.

In the night, Arthur was faced towards Merlin, and Merlin was facing front, but in the morning they were both curled in towards each other. Awwwww.

Merlin and Arthur are a lot gayer in the books, where you can actually read their thoughts. Sadly the books don’t go past season 3. So basically, imagine everything and all the feelings you know they have for each other x50.

Merlin can literally get away with anything when it comes to Arthur, including punching and slapping him, throwing poop in his face, splashing Arthur’s own pee in his mouth, calling him all varieties of names, give him orders and make him obey them, and so much more.

Arthur has never actually tried to hit-hit Merlin.

Merlin gave Arthur his blue cloak as a temporary disguise all the way in 2.02, and Arthur kept it throughout the whole series, despite initially complaining about its smell and also being aware that Merlin barely had any clothes. (Perhaps it had some of Merlin’s natural scent and Arthur just couldn’t give that up? ;))

no but let’s honestly talk about the fact that arthur heard merlin warning him of morgana’s attack ~in a dream~ and he still sprang out of bed and took action. let’s talk about the fact that arthur trusts merlin that much, that he holds merlin in that regard. let’s talk about the fact that he didn’t even question hearing merlin’s voice in his head, guiding him to make good choices. let’s talk about the fact that arthur probably just thought it was his own voice of reason. let’s talk about the fact that arthur’s voice of reason sounds like merlin. Let’s talk about the fact that he ditched his wife because he heard Merlin

Because we’ve already seen it. The beautiful scene in ‘The Wicked Day’ where Merlin waits all night is exactly what will happen. Merlin gave up EVERYTHING for Arthur. It was probably really unhealthy but so gay. He was willing to put aside everything, including himself, and even at the expense of others, all for Arthur.

Spiders the most, i was ready to jump from a third floor on the concrete when my classmates chased me with it so yeah. Um also that i will never succeed in anything, there’s fear of needles (why i find my disease ironic), faints are unavoidable when drawing blood.

16. Reincarnation AU + M. Amnesia

Yeah, everything is kind of up in the air right now. I’m taking it one day at a time. I hope these little ficlets are at least somethingto distract everyone for just a bit.

Arthur was showing his new Personal Assistant around the office, seemingly a normal enough thing to do. Arthur off-handedly pointed outa photo of the company’s opening day, a grainy sepia photo that hung across from Arthur’s office, when things got weird.

“Oh I remember that year,” Merlin said, “Really hot summer, to be honest.”

“What do you mean, ‘oh your remember that?’” Arthur stared at his new Personal Assistant. “This company was founded in 1898.”

“Oh yeah, sorry, forgot I hadn’t told you yet,” Merlin said with a funny crooked smile, “I’m a RS.”

“A what?”

Merlin tilted his head, “An RS? You know, a Reincarnated Soul?”

Arthur wondered how surprised he looked, because he felt alittle stunned, to say the least. RS cases were rare. So rare that Arthur hadnever met anyone with a reincarnated soul. In fact, he was positive that everyone he knew had never met someone with a reincarnated soul. He was certain if he played the degrees-of-Kevin-Bacon game, that even then, he wouldn’t find someone with a reincarnated soul. And Merlin had just said it on the first day of his job as it was normal.

Merlin’s smile slipped a little, “Is that alright? You can’t sack me for magic-discrimination.”

Arthur shook his head, snapping himself out of it “Of course not, Merlin. It’s just that I have never met- Nevermind. It’s fine. Let me show you the break room next.”

Arthur had never looked into RS cases before. He had neverhad a need or a want before. His father had been anti-magic, so Arthur hadn’t grownup with much of an education on magic, let alone rare forms of magic. After a month of working with Merlin though, he found himself diving in the deep hole that was RS magic, because Merlin kept saying the wildest things.

‘I miss the taste of bananas.’

‘That song was absolutely brilliant and literally no one remembers it, and I hate that.’

‘I’m so glad we invented the internet. Do you know how many stupid things I used to believe?’

‘One of my mums was kind of a hippie and after that lifetime I never went back to eating meat.”

‘That sesame seed oil thing was never a good idea, Linda. An appeal to ancient wisdom is a classic fallacy and you should know better.’

‘When you’ve been married as many times as I have, you learn a thing or two.’

Arthur was getting so many weird pieces of information about Merlin and he had no idea how to process any of them. His curiosity was killing him, but he was positive it was rude to ask that many personal questions of your employee. So he continued living in ignorance.

All the while, Merlin became one of his closest friends. (Arthur was a bit of a workaholic. He denied this on several occasions but thefact that his PA was one of his closest friends did not help his case.) Despite seemingly being on opposite ends of every kind of spectrum, they got along well.They often went out for drinks after work, and Merlin had gotten in the habit of going on a jog with Arthur on Saturday mornings and getting a coffee afterwards.

Besides the weird tidbits that Merlin dropped every once anda while, Arthur didn’t learn much more about Merlin’s other lives. But he did learn a lot about Merlin’s current life. He was young, single, and just moved to London for this job. He was a vegetarian, volunteered at a magical-creature shelter, and cried at any kind of sappy commercial or film. He grew up in a small village, was raised in a magic-positive household, and he was bisexual.

Arthur could not have been more different from Merlin, and yet, he couldn’t help but find that he was falling arse over tit for him.

It all came to head at the company’s annual charity ball. Merlin was dressed in a navy blue suit with a white scarf draped over his shoulders. On his lapel he wore a small triskelion pin and his tie clip was in the shape of a dragon. He looked stunning and Arthur was suddenly hit with how absolutely gone for him he was.

“Evening,” Merlin said with a small smile, “You look nice. And you made it here on time without my help, so it’s a miracle really.”

Arthur smiled and passed Merlin a glass of champagne, “Really,Merlin, I am your boss. You should be nicer to me.”

“Where’s the fun in that?” Merlin’s eyes strayed to his suit, and Arthur saw the exact moment he noticed the pride flag lapel pin. His face froze and he looked up at Arthur with an analytical look. “Nice pin.”

“Thanks,” Arthur’s throat felt tight, “It’s my first time wearing it.”

Merlin nodded, “Ah, I see.”

“Yeah,” Arthur shrugged, trying to put distance between himself and this awkward moment.

The rest of night went smoothly, no one else commented onhis pin, which was a bit of a relief. He may or may not have drank more than planned in celebration of it going smoothly, which was always a bad idea.

Merlin pulled Arthur into the car, “Jesus, you weigh a ton. Can you please use your own legs?”

“’m no’ fat.”

“Didn’t say you were, prat.”

Arthur laughed, his head leaning on Merlin’s shoulder, “You always call me a prat.”

Merlin was silent for a while, but Arthur didn’t notice because his drunken mind was focusing on not puking.

“How many times have you been alive?” Arthur slurred, “I know I’m not supposed to ask, but I can’t stop thinking about it. Did you meet anyone famous? Were you anyone famous? Were you always named ‘Merlin?’ We’re you queer in your other lifetimes too?”

“Arthur,” Merlin sighed, “Let’s just get you home, alright?”

“Do you not want to tell me?” Arthur pouted, “Do you not like me?”

“Jesus Christ, why do you always get really flirty or maudlin when you’re drunk? It’s such a weird dichotomy, honestly.”

“Have I been drunk with you before?” Arthur stumbled as Merlin pulled him out of the cab. “I think I would remember that.”

Merlin was silent again, but Arthur’s drunken brain needed to focus on getting up the stairs. Suddenly, they were in Arthur’s flat, andMerlin was handing him a glass of water.

“Thanks,” He drank it all in one go, already realizing he was going to hate himself in the morning.

He had been right, of course. He woke up on his couch thenext morning and remembered all the weird questions he had asked Merlin, and immediately regretted all of it. But there were a few things that stuck out tohim.

He was jolted out of his thoughts when he heard his toaster ding and the shuffle of feet. Merlin appeared in the doorway.

“Coffee,” Merlin sat down next to Arthur. “Toast. Paracetamol.”

Arthur stared at Merlin, surprised to see him in his flat, before he took the offerings without complaint.

“Feeling better?”

Arthur nodded, studying Merlin closely for a moment. “Last night… last night you said I’m always flirty or maudlin when drunk.”

Merlin’s face flushed and he rose quickly, “Oh, you know,” He laughed nervously, taking Arthur’s empty plate and trying to dash into the kitchen. Arthur grabbed his arm, stopping his flight.

“You’ve never called me a prat before.”

Merlin avoided his eye.

“Why did I say that you always call me a prat, when I don’t remember you ever saying that?”

Merlin bit his lip.

“Am I still drunk?” Arthur asked, his heart rate rising.

“No,” Merlin gave him a small apologetic smile.

“Am I…?” Arthur shook his head, “Why am I remembering things about you that didn’t happen?”

Merlin sighed, “I’m not really supposed to tell you. You’re supposed to remember on your own. I only started remembering you specifically after I started working for you.”

“But, I am…I am…”

“A reincarnated soul? Yes.” Merlin smiled, “Took you awhile. Sometimes it does.”

Arthur had to sit down. “And I knew you? Once before?”

Merlin gave him a funny smile and Arthur blanched further, “More than once?”

Merlin actually laughed, which made Arthur feel even more off kilter. Merlin said, “I’ve known you in every lifetime, Arthur. And Ireally should wait until you get more memories back, but I want you to knowthat I will find you in every lifetime after this.”

Arthur looked up at Merlin, a small hysterical laugh escaping his lips. “Fuck. And I was worried about asking you out.”

Merlin smiled, “You still have to woo me, love. I’m not that easy.”

Arthur laughed again, “This is insane. I want to kiss you. Have we kissed before?”

“Not in this lifetime, and that’s all that matters.” Merlin leaned forward, and pecked a kiss on Arthur’s cheek. “Come on, let’s get you some more food and we can weed through your memories.”

Arthur leaned forward, tilting Merlin’s head back and giving him a proper kiss, a shock of electricity going through his system that he hadnever felt before. It felt like he had kissed Merlin a million times before and like it was his first kiss all over again.

Merlin smiled at him, “Well hello there.”

Arthur narrowed his eyes, “Why am I remembering you in a feather hat?”

Merlin just laughed.
