today's bird is the luzon bleeding-heart!

- the courtship display of the luzon bleeding-heart involves the male showing the female his "heart" (cute!)

- if their young don't develop their adult plumage in time, the parents will attack and sometimes kill them 😨

- when incubating their eggs, the male takes the day shift and the female takes the night shift

January 13, 2024 - Ecuadorian Ground Dove (Columbina buckleyi) These small doves are found in open woodlands, clearings, gardens, and agricultural areas in northwestern Ecuador and far northern Peru. The details of their diet are unknown, but they likely eat small seeds, like closely related species. They build cup-shaped nests in bushes and trees where females lay clutches of two eggs.

"Quiet and unobtrusive, the little ground dove walks on the ground in open bushy places in the southern states. If it is startled, it flies up into the brush with a fluttering rattle, showing a short black tail and a flash of rusty-red in the wings. The male may repeat his short cooing song incessantly, even in the heat of the day."

"Cuties!! I see nuthatches depicted decently often, but never this guy!"

No other nuthatch is patterned quite like this guy! While most nuthatch have a combination of steel blue, white, and rusty rufous feathers, the Blue Nuthatch is the only one to sport a full mask.

Also unique to this species is the ability to protect its eyes by contracting the bare skin around them to help cover them up.

@yelyahnaloj Thank you for your donation to UNRWA! The Polynesian ground dove (Pampusana erythroptera) was quite difficult to do, as the species is Critically Endangered and thus very few reference photos exist, so I may have mixed the plumage coloration with a few similar species in the genus. Fun fact: because they have no natural ground predators, P. erythroptera will often run away when started, rather than fly!
