HEROS OF THE GREAT PATRIOTIC WAR
Roza Georgiyevna Shanin
3 April 1924 – 28 January 1945
Roza Shanina was a graduate of the Central Women's Sniper Training School credited with 59 confirmed kills.
Shanina volunteered for the military after the death of her brother in 1941 and chose to be a sniper on the front line. Praised for her shooting accuracy, Shanina was capable of precisely hitting enemy personnel and making doublets (two target hits by two rounds fired in quick succession).
In 1944, a Canadian newspaper described Shanina as "the unseen terror of East Prussia". She became the first servicewoman of the 3rd Belorussian Front to receive the Order of Glory.
Shanina was killed in action during the East Prussian Offensive while shielding the severely wounded commander of an artillery unit. Shanina's actions received praise during her lifetime, but conflicted with the Soviet policy of sparing snipers from heavy battles. Her combat diary was first published in 1965.

When your hometown is small and young and its story isn't as exciting as that of the other cities - it takes a great pride in every event or famous people it was related with, no matter how big or small.
Main things regarding the Great Patriotic War my town is proud of:
1) Home front activities: as one of the mainly textile-oriented centres of Soviet Union, during the GPW it took on its shoulders the responsibility for producing military clothes and medical textile goods such as bandages, cotton wool and gauze; gave a shelter to the refuges and wounded soldiers;
2) Relation to the famous Normandie-Niemen regiment: in fact, my hometown was the first place of dislocation and training of Normandy's pilots and this is where they started their dangerous yet glorious journey. For now, there is a monument and a street named after them in my town. When i studied at school, it was a necessary topic during the country history or region history lessons.

3) People, such as artist Boris Ivanovich Prorokov (you can visit house museum with his works) and poet Mihail Alexandrovich Dudin (at least once in the year there are literature events in his honor at the schools, universities, libraries, etc.)

Russia:
"Be absorbed by us, or we will kill you."
"You are our brothers, so we have to kill you to remind you of that."
This is the reason for their war. No sane person can support that. We have to defend Ukraine and the rational world from such violations of international law and expansion which is a close relative of Nazi Germany. As insupportable a reason, and as horrific of methods.

"-THAT PASSETH ALL UNDERSTANDING," Vancouver Sun. October 23, 1943. Page 4. --- [Hitler, being eaten by the Russian bear, yells:] - I SHALL NOW CONCLUDE A PEACE WITH RUSSIA! A gaggle of figures, Lavall, Franco, Tiso, Bogdan Filov, Horthy, and Antonescu, the leaders of Nazi Germany's allies and collaborators, flee in terror.

On this day, it’s time to remember my family. They say that people live on till someone remembers them. So this is my Immortal Regiment.
Pavel Pobirukhin, my great grandfather, fought in the War from 25 of August 1941 till 10 of December 1941, when he got severely injured, luckily survived and returned to his family of five children (Polina, Ivan. Petr, Lidia and Taisya) and his wive, my great grandmother Maria.
I was able to meet and talk only to grandpa Petr, grannies Lidia and Taisya. They didn’t talk much about that period, only that they always were hungry and had to start working really early to feed the family.
Unfortunately all of them are gone now. I was foolish not to ask them about the War. And now no one is left to tell me.
But the memory of them stays till I stay and I’ll pass it to my kid.
I REMEMBER, I AM PROUD

Dark night, only bullets are whistling in the steppe, Only the wind is wailing through the telephone wires, stars are faintly flickering ... In the dark night, my love, I know you are not sleeping, And, near a child's crib, you secretly wipe away a tear.
How I love the depths of your gentle eyes, How I want to press my lips to them! This dark night separates us, my love, And the dark, troubled steppe has come to lie between us.
I have faith in you, in you, my sweetheart. That faith has shielded me from bullets in this dark night ... I am glad, I am calm in deadly battle: I know you will meet me with love, no matter what happens.
Death is not terrible, we've met with it more than once in the steppe ... And now here it looms over me once again, You await my return, sitting sleepless near a cradle, And so I know that nothing will happen to me!
