November 18, 1809
Glückstadt, November 18, 1809. Forever in some trouble about the day of the month, but am never more than one or two days out. Our amiable friend le Commandant Donsur took us this morning to see le haut Chancellier de Holstein,¹ le Baron de quelque chose² which shall be found out and told anon. It seems he had already announced us, for his Excellency knew all about us. Received us very courteously and understanding that we are to leave town to-morrow, asked us to dine to-day en famille; agreed. Went at 1/2 p. 2. Y: Madame ———; M———, the third Judge, and ———, a literary man of modest, intelligent appearance whose name I regret to have lost. The Chancellier appears about 47; small, maigre,³ but sprightly, courteous, and sensible; something like Madison⁴ in appearance. A la Soedoise, we all stood and said our grace; and after dinner all rose at once, and after returning thanks, bowed, &c, adjourned to the drawing-room. The dinner was of several courses. Each dish served in succession, first being carved by Madame, and then handed round by the servant. At each two plates a bottle of wine (claret), tumblers and glasses; each drank as he pleased. Some choice wines were sent round, a glass to each. Madame has four lovely children, the three youngest particularly; the two eldest, girls. Home at 7. Snow and hail. The house at which I lodge is the rendezvous of the Club. The noblesse⁵ of the town meet every Saturday evening for conversation, cards, and supper. (The ladies' club assemble at the same house every Tuesday evening.) I went in a few minutes, but I declined to join at cards, as well from an aversion to lose as because I must pack up, and so adieu, Madame, till that labour be gone through. Minuit.⁶ Done, even the picture; all, all packed, ready for starting at sunrise. I bid you bon soir a dozen times before I shut you up in that dark case. I can never do it without regret. It seems as if I were burying you alive.
1 The High Chancellor of Holstein 2 The Baron of something. 3 Thin, spare. 4 James Madison, at this time President of the United States. 5 The nobility. 6 Midnight.

Following my previous post, a reliable way to spot tourists, btw, is if they laugh at the names of our towns, villages, and other places.
For example:
Achim (that's a male first name)
Besitz (belongings/property)
Breiholz (mash/mashed wood)
Glückstadt (luck town)
Gottesgabe (god's gift)
Großenkneten (groß = big, kneten = to knead)
Himmelpforten (heaven's gates, more or less)
Hoffnung (hope)
Itzehoe (it's pronounced "it's a hoe")
Kotzenbüll ("Kotzen" translates to "throwing up")
Leck (Lick. More giggles when they find out that there's a "leck huus", a "lick house" if you will. It doesn't matter that "leck" has other meanings, the focus stays on licking.)
Leer (means "empty")
Luschendorf (fool's village. There are other less nice words for "Lusche", but it's generally someone who's completely untalented, clueless, and weak)
Nützen (use or usage)
Pferdekrug (horse's jug/pub)
Witzhave ("Witz" mens "joke")
Witzwort (if you swap the two components of that word, you get "Wortwitz", which means "pun" in English)
Not exhaustive, there definitely are more. Germans, feel free to add on!

I am home! *passes out*
Got back at 12.30 last night (instead of 9) having had my flight cancelled because of damage to the plane - well, I'd rather they cancel it, if they can't repair it, than fly with it, but still. Credit to BA, they got me onto the next available flight out, so I did still land at Heathrow on the same day I was expecting to, and I was able to rearrange my bus home, even if I didn't quite arrive at home on the expected day. On the plus side, I now know what happens when a flight gets cancelled. XD
Still, I had a fantastic time, spoke German at least half of the time, visited beautiful Lübeck and Glückstadt, drank glühwein and beer and at least two different types of schnapps, ate loads, walked a lot, caught up a lot (but not totally) with my lovely friends (too much to talk about, it's been nearly four years since we saw each other, and more than that since we had chance for a proper chat) and their friends, and was generally spoiled absolutely rotten. :D (now I'm pondering making an AO3 for everything I wrote for the Fandom That Dare Not Speak Its Name, given that it's over ten years since the fandom fizzled out and five years since the muse died (and fifteen since he left the band)...it was in that fandom that I met these particular friends and we were remniscing and getting all nostalgic, and I'm feeling kind of inspired, although I don't really want to link it to my main AO3...)
I still owe comments and replies and betaing and responses to being tagged in things (thank you all so much, everyone who's tagged me in stuff, I've been utterly useless at responding for a while but I do love those things and I am fully intending to get on and sort them out XD ) and will hopefully get to those over the next few days. Today, however, is for unpacking, unwinding, drinking coffee, and attempting to consolidate my German vocab XDDDDD

A Lloyd’s Patriotic Fund £100 sword awarded to Commander Arthur Farquhar (x)
‘From the Patriotic Fund at Lloyds, to Arthur Farquhar Esq Comdr of H M Bomb Acheron, for his noble support of the honor of the British flag & his successful protection of a convoy from the Mediterranean under his care, & that of Captn Vincent in the Arrow sloop, when attacked on the 3rd of Feb 1805 by two large French frigates as recorded in the London Gazette of the 13th March’.
Arthur Farquhar (1772-1843) Commander of Acheron, lost his ship in the action for which he earned his Patriotic Fund sword but was acquitted of wrongdoing at his ensuing court martial where his actions were praised as ‘highly meritorious and deserving imitation’.
As Farquhar was under Admiral Viscount Nelson’s command in the Mediterranean at the time, his court martial was attended and signed by several captains from the fleet who would subsequently gain fame at Trafalgar. Born in 1772, Farquhar joined the Navy at 15. He served as lieutenant on various ships until promoted to commander in 1802 and in January 1804 took command of Acheron.
At dawn on the 3rd February 1805, in the company of the sloop Arrow, he was escorting a convoy of 35 merchant ships from Malta to England when two large ships were sighted. After a series of manoeuvres and signals the ships were identified as two French frigates, the Hortense, 40 guns, and Incorruptible, 38 guns. After an exchange of fire which considerably damaged Acheron’s rigging and sails, night fell. Dawn the following day saw the action continue and by 8.30 a.m. Arrow, which had been totally disabled, struck her colours to the Incorruptible, twenty minutes later the badly damaged Acheron hauled down her colours to the French warship Hortense.
The action of these two greatly out gunned and out-manned ships allowed all but three of the convoy to avoid capture and proceed safely to England. On the 8th April Farquhar was promoted to post-captain and later awarded this sword by the Patriotic Fund and a piece of plate by the Merchants of Malta.
He continued to see active service in the Baltic and North Sea, capturing numerous privateers and commanded naval operations in the Weser, the Ems and the Elbe and at the capture of Glückstadt in 1814. For these services he was made a Knight of the Sword of Sweden and also of the Hanoverian Guelphic Order.
In 1815 he was made a Commander of the Bath. From 1830 to 1833 he commanded Blanche, 48 guns, in the West Indies as Commodore and for his services there during the slave revolt received the thanks of the House of Assembly of Jamaica and a sword of £150 value. He was knighted on his return to England, attained the rank of Rear-Admiral in 1837 and died in 1843.

Peter Kern, Hanna Schygulla, Rüdiger Vogler, Nastassja Kinski, Hans Christian Blech in Wrong Move (Wim Wenders, 1975) Cast: Rüdiger Vogler, Hans Christian Blech, Hanna Schygulla, Nastassja Kinski. Peter Kern, Ivan Desny, Marianne Hoppe, Lisa Kreuzer. Screenplay: Peter Handke, based on a novel by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Cinematography: Robby Müller. Film editor: Peter Przygodda. With his presence in Alice in the Cities (1974), Wrong Move, and Kings of the Road (1976) Rüdiger Vogler became as essential to Wim Wenders's films of the mid-1970s as Robert De Niro was to Martin Scorsese's work in the late 1970s and the 1980s. His homely everyman face is perfect for the self-centered loners of the first and the third films in Wenders's "road trilogy," men who find themselves having to come to terms with a world -- or at least a Germany -- they can't fully accept. But Vogler feels miscast in the middle film -- too old to be playing the young writer out to discover himself, a character drawn by screenwriter Peter Handke from Goethe's Wilhelm Meister's Apprenticeship and thrust into modern post-Nazi, post-Wirtschaftswunder Germany. There is no naïveté left in Vogler's face, there are no illusions to be lost. Yet Wenders sends his 30-year-old Wilhelm on the voyage from northern to southern Germany, from Glückstadt to the Zugspitze, and into encounters with the world of art and politics that might have disillusioned a 20-year-old. Which is not to say that Wrong Move is a failure. It remains a film that tantalizes with its non-realistic narrative, its sense of a world grown alien to people who think and feel, and of a country haunted by its desperation to escape from a terrible history. No surprise that a good part of its dialogue consists of people telling one another of their dreams, for the film itself has a liminal dreamlike quality. Would a fully awake and aware Wilhelm really pay the train fare for the con artist Laertes (Hans Christian Blech) and his mute traveling companion Mignon (Nastassja Kinski)? Do people really fall in love when their eyes meet between trains traveling on different tracks, and then somehow manage to get together after all? Do strangers really decide to travel together and wind up by mistake in the mansion of a suicidal industrialist? Or does all of that happen only in dreams? Wenders's film is touched by the mysterious angst that afflicts the characters in Antonioni's films -- the scene in the concrete caverns of Frankfurt evokes the bleak modern Rome of a film like L'Eclisse (1962), for example. In the context of a film so beautifully shot, so eccentrically put together as Wrong Move, even the miscasting of Vogler feels like not so much a mistake as a provocation.

#warten #abwarten #lebenszeichen #auszeit #pause #ruhe #entspannen #weitermachen #canon #85mm #cameraonly #wenigeristmehr #backtobasic #mauer #glückstadt #urbanphotography (hier: Glückstadt, Germany) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cg4IHmdsmcs/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
