FMP 2 Introduction and Research
For our final major project we were given the theme '' Helicopters and Crocodiles''. Although it seems like a very specific and limiting theme with not much room for research and further development, there still is a lot of media I can look at and other sources and information that I can broaden up from that initial research.
Lake Placid (1999)
A mysterious creature kills a man. When Jack Wells the local game hunter looks into this gruesome case, attempting to hunt down the beast and kill it, the truth reveals itself. The so called monster turns out to be a massive and vicious crocodile.
youtube
Throughout the franchise, there have been a number of crocodiles presented but the biggest one to appear in all the films was approximately 30 feet long and was thought to be an Asian Pacific Crocodile that was over 150 years old.
The saltwater crocodile, native to tropical regions in Asia, the Pacific and the northern coast of Australia, is considered to be the biggest crocodile species. The average adult size for a male is around 4.6-5.2 meters while the average one for the female is 3.1-3.4 meters.
I really liked Betty White's character in Lake Placid. I thought the oblivious old lady feeding entire cows to the giant crocodile was a sort of humorous break from the tense atmosphere of the movie.
youtube
It sort of reminded me of old shows like Clifford The Big Red Dog and how the little girl took care of a gigantic dog while no one seemed to mind. The ironic little girl or vulnerable young lady character contrasts very well with the gigantic dog or the killer crocodile.
Tumblr media
The largest crocodile in captivity ever was a 6.17-m (20-ft 2.91-in) saltwater crocodile captured on 3 September 2011 in Bunawan, in the province of Agusan del Sur, Mindanao, Philippines. The crocodile named Lolong weighed around 1,075kg (2,370 lb)

Shark VS Crocodile
Compared to the movie Jaws, which is about a gigantic great white shark, I feel like the idea of an enormous crocodile is a lot more terrifying and I think would end up in a significantly greater number of casualties and deaths if such a creature actually existed.
Since a shark can only live in water, staying safe wouldn't be a problem as long as people wouldn't get close to the ocean, whereas the crocodile is an aquatic reptile which can both swim and walk on land would mean much bigger problems for humans and other terrestrial species.
Interestingly enough, I have looked at what would happen if the largest crocodile alive would fight the largest shark and apparently a shark would have a much better chance at winning.
The Shark's body shape and larger amount of teeth would give the shark a considerable advantage while the Crocodile's tougher, armour like skin and speed would act as extra protection .
Tumblr media
I believe this could make for an interesting action comic book between mutant sharks and crocodiles. Similar to Godzilla and King Kong.
Tumblr media
This could also link in with the theme of helicopters due to the most iconic scene in the movie King Kong. Although in the original movie from 1933 they used planes (since helicopters would be invented 6 years later), they changed that in the 2017 remake with helicopters.

I could go even further buy expanding this idea to something a bit more metaphorical. I have looked at how military aircrafts are usually given interesting nicknames.

Another interesting thing that the military does is painting eyes and teeth on their aircraft. From what I understand, the reasons for these paintjobs are to supposedly ''intimidate'' and ''scare'' the enemies as well as due to the planes aerodynamic and fish-like body.
The most famous plane with teeth is the Curtis P40 Warhawk.   The teeth were painted on the P40 airplanes used by the First Volunteer Group of the Chinese Air Force in 1941-1924, called Flying Tigers.
Tumblr media
The Flying Tigers were a group of American volunteers with the mission of defending China against Japanese forces.  The shark-faced nose art of the P40 is arguably the most recognized nose art of WWII. They have used shark teeth of the Flying Tigers plane as inspiration for our seaplane.

On the night of February 5/6, 1991, Colonel Tom Lennon, commander of the 48th Fighter Wing, led an experimental attack by a pair of General Dynamics F-111 Aardvarks on tanks and armoured vehicles of the Iraqi Republican Guard dug into the desert north of Kuwait. For the test, each aircraft was equipped with a Pave Track pod and carried four GBU-12 500-lb LGBs. The crews were to see if LGBs could be guided accurately enough onto the tanks to destroy them. Cruising at 14,000ft, safely outside the reach of the AAA, the two crews delivered a series of deliberate attacks on stationary targets. The mission was an extraordinary success: four tanks and one artillery piece were destroyed for an expenditure of eight GBU-12s. Horner immediately ordered all F-111Fs be shifted from the strategic campaign and be put to work taking out Iraqi vehicles. For the 48th TFW, tank-plinking (a term which irritated Schwarzkopf) became the order of the day. By February 28th, 1991, the 66 deployed F-111Fs of the 48th TFW (out of a total of 84) destroyed 920 tanks/APCs (total may be higher), 252 artillery pieces, and 12 bridges, and emerged as USAF’s best strike fighter of the war. Interesting Fact: When it was discovered that the F-111Fs had destroyed ten times more tanks than the F-16s, the F-16s were directed to cease attacks by mid-afternoon each day to allow the dust to settle before the F-111s went to work at night!
