GOÊTIC ATAVISMS update
Tumblr media
So the book of essays I wrote with Frater Acher inches towards publication at Hadean Press, with a Foreword by the one and only Frater U∴D∴.and fantastic art. Look at that. I told you it was going to have pretty art, didn't I? Reader, I was *not *wrong.
José Sabogal has outdone himself. I'm so honoured that my writings are amongst such august company - a back and forth between Acher and myself. I hope you might enjoy, even in the bits where we disagree. More details from Acher:
I am delighted to give you an update on Craig 'VI’ Slee, José Sabogal and my new book GOÊTIC ATAVISMS. As a small but dedicated goêtic horde, we have been secretly working on this material for 18 months now, and soon it is time to share it with all of you.
The launch of this project will take place in three phases: On April 30th, a brand new online presence will launch at www.goeteia.com. It offers free education, guidance, and input on all things ‘chthonic sorcery,’ as well as the upcoming book. (Check it out to see the countdown... :-)). Then, in early May, the very limited edition of GOÊTIC ATAVISMS will be available. Keep your eyes peeled at our friends at Miskatonic and Courtyard Books for the first 33 copies. And finally, we can all pre-order the standard edition of the book from our great partners at Hadean Press starting May 30th.
Then, at the bindery today I saw the first prototype of the limited fine edition. To be honest, it will be the most radical binding I've seen in a time: You will be able to open the book from both sides and read either my essays or Craig’s. In the centre of the book, where our texts meet, you will find an Overture by none other than Frater U∴D∴. The book is lavishly illustrated with original artworks by José, and with the typesetting and the design of each individual pages, I have worked my heart out during this long winter...
Just like the book, the website is a labour of love and a quite intimate place to share videos and photos of my own goêtic operations. And, of course, lots of useful resources and material for further study.
I am aware that it is rare to undertake projects as uncompromising and radical as this one. So I am grateful to everyone who made this work possible – from the spirits in the caves and on the mountain tops to all the human friends involved. Here's to a goêtic summer ahead of us!

Do you have a tag or resources for wealth magic? I'm currently homeless but it's something I'd like to incorporate into my practice once I'm more established.
Sadly I haven’t posted anything myself on the subject. I might do so when I get a minute. Sorry to hear about your situation I genuinely hope it improves for you.
One of the best books I have read on the subject is financial sorcery by Jason Miller- in fact all his books are great. As are his courses if you have the money. Frater UDs book on Money Magic is also quite good.
Since you are homeless I will assume your access to tools is limited. Some of the things which may help you is making regular offerings to local spirits and asking them for help. Over time you will develop friendly relationships with them and they will help you. They will also have a vested interest in keeping you well so that the offerings continue and get more involved.
For now, offer your energy. Your breath, a glass of water infused with your energy. Ask for help and give thanks when it is received.
You may want to use simple prayer for now, something along the lines of
“In the name of Al, I beseech thee tzadkiel that you may look favourably upon me and task the chasmalim with moving the realm of disks and pouring worldly riches upon me and causing others to look kindly upon me” these are the angels of Jupiter, a blue candle or 4 blue candles would help. But not necessary. Some would also ask the chasmalim to send the spirit hismael but that is at your discretion. I think he’s good people, others dislike working with planetary spirits.
Alternatively you can pray to Jove and utilise the Orphic hymn as an invocation. I’m just more of a western mystery tradition kind of guy.
There’s lots of ways to approach wealth magic the above is the simplest and requires the least tools. But it can still pack a powerful punch and hopefully get you to a better place where you will have more resources.
Thank you for your question, I will write more on wealth Magick more in-depth and maybe you could pick up some tips there. But I hope this will help for now, I wish you luck and hope you carve yourself into a better place.

Take Everything You Know About Sigils and Add One Step: forget it
Below are the operations of Sigil Work (a common form of Chaos Magic):
The sentence of desire must be formulated and written down in capital letters. Why capitals? They provide more structure for your sigil shape with more straight lines than lowercase letters
Repeated letters are deleted so that every letter will be used but once. Why delete? It simplifies the final sigil shape by keeping the amount lines/shapes to a minimum.
All letters of the whole sentence are combined into one general sigil OR several parts of the sentence are sigilized into several single sigils then combined into one general sigil. Why? To make the actual sigil
The sigil is internalized/activated. Internalizing should be done by staring at your sigil in a sort of trance, either during a state of euphoria, ecstasy, fatigue, or a simple meditative state. It is taught that just internalizing your sigil will activate it, but you can activate/charge it by really any means possible. Why? This is what plants your sigil into your unconscious
The sigil is banished and forgotten. This can be done by immediately distracting yourself upon removing the sigil from your sight. Why? so that it can obey its encoded direction in the unconscious mind without hindrance from the concision mind
Step 5 is not necessary if you decide against it, but it is very rarely found in “Tumblr Sigil Craft”. And Step 4 is almost never enforced. This post is to provide you with that lost piece of information to allow you to choose your own direction when practicing sigil magic. If this final step resonates with you, please practice it! It’s an incredible tool that will help you gain results with your sigils when done effectively. But if you feel that your particular sigil will work best when kept clear in the conscious mind, go right ahead with it. As much as the final step is stressed in “traditional” Chaos Magic, it is also important to remember that the authors of sigil craft literature encourage your own adaptations of your witchcraft as well. Some quotes by Frater UD include: 1. “Dare to experiment, make changes where you feel they may be necessary, and always aspire to develop your own techniques and methods.” 2. “place your trust in your feelings (i.e., your intuition) rather than in rules which other magician’s have set up according to their own subjective biases” 3. “In Spare’s system there are no ‘correct’ or ‘incorrect’ sigils; neither is there a list of ready-made symbols. It is of no import whether the sigil is a ‘correct’ one or not, but it is crucial that is has been created by the magician and is therefore meaningful to [them].”
Additional Tips For Sigil Craft you may not have heard before
”Formulating the sentence of desire and drawing the sigil should be done with the utmost concentration. It makes the following activation (“charging”) much easier.”
“You should keep your operation secret. For discussing it…may dissolve the sigil’s power.”
“negative formulas are usually not properly comprehended by the unconscious” Avoid words like “not” or “never” in your sentence of desire
“Sigil magic is primarily success magic. It aims at achieving very tangible and verifiable results. Accordingly, sentences of will should be concrete and specific.”
Specify a time limit for your sigil within your sentence of desire (a day, a month, a year, a car-ride)
“it is advisable…for you to place a border round the sigil, either in the form of a triangle, circle, square, or something similar. This…makes it easier to concentrate on the sigil when charging it. [And] it gives the sigil a ‘definitive’ and ‘conclusive’ touch, for if you work a lot with sigils, occasionally you may find the sigils becoming ‘entangled’ in your unconscious to form undesirable chains and combinations.”
Decorate/stylize your sigil to add a “magic touch”
Sigils can also be constructed through a pictorial method by sketching your desires, simplifying them to shapes and lines, and stylizing (decorating) it as you would with the word method
The Concept Behind Sigils and Their Success is that because of their unrefined image, they will appear to our unconscious and remain there. “Everything which reminds us of the times of amateurish handicraft will awaken primordial impulses in our reptilian brain. This will virtually automatically liberate the magical power in this section of the brain or awaken it in the first place.” Also “Mandala structures will awaken and activate archetypal material in the unconscious.” Which is another reason why it is advisable to put a border around your sigil. Creating and activating a sigil to manifest your desires is putting all your faith into your unconscious.
Notes On Following Through With Step 5 of the Sigil Process
“There are three parts to the operation of a sigil. The sigil is constructed, the sigil is lost to the mind, the sigil is charged.” (Peter J. Carroll)
You can also banish a sigil by keeping it in one spot and getting used to it until you no longer perceive it consciously
”Don’t use them lazily or heedlessly. This could definitely be dangerous! At the beginning you will need perhaps a quarter of an hour or so for your first individual sigil, but by your fifth or sixth sigil it will take you only a couple of minutes. This effort will certainly prove to be worthwhile if you consider the probably success. … With some experience, you will have finished the whole operation, including activation and subsequent banishing, within less than five to ten minutes. There is no faster way- even in magic!”
“It is of prime importance not to bring back the meaning and aim of the sigil into consciousness at any time.”
“It is recommended…that you should not spend too much time consciously creating a sigil. This is because…it will be much more difficult to forget the sigil’s outline and contents or to push it out of the consciousness, which is so essential for its proper working.”
“If sigils or sentences of desire unexpectedly pop up into consciousness, recharge and banish them again. Most of the time, it’s enough to simply distract your attention”
“A record should be kept of all work with sigils but not in such a way as to cause conscious deliberation over the sigilized desire.” So like a running list of dates on which you created/activated a sigil without specifics of the process or desire itself
What is Chaos Magic? A system of magic that focuses on personal symbolism rather than a traditional system.
(The content of this post includes paraphrased information from miscellaneous sources along with direct quotes from Practical Sigil Magic by Frater UD aka Ralph Tegtmeier, which discusses the workings of Austin Osman Spar)

Sorry, what is an alphabet of desire and how is it used?
An alphabet of desire is the personalized magical alphabet of a witch or sorcerer. Each letter represents a sensation and is tied to a sense memory. The letters are used by the witch or sorcerer to *spell* out their desire. The *named* desire is *drawn* into existence. It is especially useful for artistic magic. You can put your personal letters on tools, charms and divination sets. Your alphabet can be used to make sigils. The alphabet of desire will reveal to the witch or sorcerer more uses as they work with it more. It can become a form of dream language too. For the most straightforward and simple information on Alphabets of desire check out Liber Null by Peter Carroll (available in paperback). Otherwise you are venturing into the challenging stuff: Frater UD’s Practical Sigil Magic, Andrew Chumbley’s Azoetia, Kenneth Grant’s various articles and excerpts re the alphabet of desire to be found via google and original works by Austin Osman Spare. When I read difficult books it can take me ages to understand, but I dig that process. But really it’s simply the ongoing tradition of witches and sorcerers making personal alphabets and symbols that transcend mere code for regular letters A-Z and instead identify the spirit of things.

Q&A: Why Isn't My Sigil Working?
“I'm very new to sigils, but after reading Frater UD's Practical Sigil Magick I recently decided to make my first sigil. It said "MY WILL IS TO WIN THE TOP PRIZE ON A SCRATCHCARD TOMORROW." I did everything the way the book explained, drawing and redrawing the letters until they looked strange, unique and magical. Then, I activated the sigil, ripping it up under running water.
“Today I purchased two scratchcards one in the morning, and one in the afternoon. I didn't win a penny. I'm confused, because so many sources say sigil magick really works and fast and is the only magick most people get results.
“Did I do something wrong? Do you have any ideas why it didn't work?”
-Anonymous
Let's start with the traditional mystic's answer to this question: If you believed it would work, why did you stop at three scratchcards? Why not help the "magick" along by buying more until you got the result you wanted? You asked for something terribly unlikely — winning the lottery — and yet you only gave it a mere three chances to happen. That's almost the same as not buying a scratchcard at all, and hoping someone will just hand you the winning ticket.
That's a nice, simple answer, isn't it? It even has the ring of wisdom to it. But it's not a satisfying answer.
So, let's get real. It didn't work because that's not really what sigil magick is for. Sigil magic is more about focusing your intent than it is about shaping the world around you. Remove the occult trappings from sigil magick — the 18th century idea of the "will" being able to control all, or the arcane rituals for breathing life into a symbol — and what you're left with is art, passion, and a statement of intent.
Those statements can be powerful. They can — and do — steer the course of entire lives. In the case of sigil magick, things that seem far too perfect to be coincidence often happen, but WHY and HOW they happen is an open question. Is it something truly supernatural? Or is it a tool for channeling the power of the subconscious mind, subtly steering the user toward uncanny connections, discovering the hidden obvious, or even providing a token of confidence to move in a new direction?
I come at sigilcraft from a chaos magick perspective. That tradition holds the view that belief is a tool. Maybe there are powerful arcane forces shaping the world, just beyond our view. Maybe not. Ultimately, it doesn't matter. If believing in something — anything — creates real results, then it doesn't really matter if it's "magick" or "positive thinking."
Do you want real results from your sigils? Here's my advice: Forget the scratchcard.
Unless you just have some fetish for scraping silvery glue off cardboard with your spare change, it's not the actual, real thing you want. It's a means to an end, right? You want to have some money, I'd guess. Ultimately, it's not even the money you want, but what that money would allow you to have or do.
It’s a lot harder to get the result you want if you try to force it to go through a single channel — like, say, only via a scratchcard — and on a specific schedule of “tomorrow.” Consider how many things you directly control or strongly influence that couldn’t happen on that schedule. I can’t even get my friends to agree on a place to meet for coffee with a week’s notice.
So if you really want to give this sigil magick thing a shot, I'd say dig down to the root of what you actually want. Be specific. Focus in on it. See it in your mind's eye. Then write out that desire, make a fresh sigil for it, and activate it. Don't get tripped up in the details of how you active it. Then, shake it all off. Finally, give it a little time. It's a big ask for the world to change itself around you (or for you to change how you experience the world), and a little patience seems reasonable.
Will it work? Prepare to be surprised. In my experience, however, it's also not much for generating the kind of instant, obvious effects you probably expect. It's a subtle thing, almost imperceptible at first. But it builds. As I wrote in the Sigil Daily guide:
Buy The Ticket, Take The Ride: In the coming days, you’ll start to see little things that are eerily evocative of the sigil you activated. Don’t deny these. Don’t dismiss them, even if they seem minor. This is the process starting to work, bit by bit, to bring your intention into reality. The more open you are to these changes, the faster the magick will come into effect.
It’s important, however, to note that your decisions play a hugely important part in how effective the sigil will be. If your sigil is about meeting a new romantic partner, for instance, you might want to think about going out to a place where that could plausibly happen. Staying inside your home, with curtains drawn and lights out, not answering the door, is actively working against the thing you want. Don’t count on the sigil to do the work for you. You’ve already bought the ticket, now you have to take the ride.
I hope this helps. If you want some additional insight, check out the Sigil Daily page on sigil creation and activation here.
Best wishes,
Sigil Daily

An Introduction Appears...
I am starting this blog with the intention of long-ish form explorations of occult, spiritual and semi-religious thought. I'm currently caught between the Scylla and Charibdis of a conservative Christian midwestern community and largely hard atheist family. In short - nobody here to talk to who doesn't have a very firm point of view they want me to join.
I am, all told, generally skeptical myself. I've had several personal experiences I would consider supernatural though and for which I don't have any "reasonable" explanation.
I've read up on the occult with some fascination for the better part of two decades but I've only in the last several years really become a dabbler, inspired by the rise of the chaos magick groups and authors.
Currently my favorite on the subject is "Postmodern Magick" although Frater UD's "High Magic" is currently it's close companion on my desktop and my tastes do run towards the High Magick (self-improvement/transformation) side of things.
My best magickal "this is a thing that actually works" experiences have been a trip-shortening charm/partnership with archangel Raphael involved and a sigil to heal a sore foot. They're not huge world-changing things by any means but they were enough to inspire more experiments and exploration.
I was raised New Age quasi-Christian but am 100% pagan at heart. Perhaps reactionary to my crystals and karma upbringing, I skew towards the depth psychology, information and occasionally the spirit paradigms.

This arrived today!
So, of course this arrived in Hanging Town on a Wednesday. No. 22 of 72 of the limited Fine Editions of GOETIC ATAVISMS has arrived in my grubby little hands and look, both Standard Hardback and Paperback will contain the words of Frater's Acher & UD & I and the art of Jose Sabogal, so while folks won't get the slipcase, or binding, one can see how awesome the art is.

Reading
Now comes the final era of the Sibyl's song; The great order of the ages is born afresh, And now justice returns, the return of Saturn's reign; Now a new lineage is sent down from high heaven. - Virgil, 4th Ecologue. Reading Theion Publishing's latest offering, THE CULT OF THE BLACK CUBE. Great stuff as usual, and a particularly useful foreword from Frater UD.

I see so many sigil posts
And hardly any of them mention charging sigils via Breath Control, like Frater UD mentions in Practical Sigil Magic. It’s all just visualisation, wanking or other stimuli like pain, blood etc. I mean, I get that people do what they like, and hardly ever stray outside of tumblr to look at source texts, but PSM is a classic of the genre. And hardly anyone mentions Spare’s Death Posture, which saddens me, since he is where Pete Carroll and the rest of the chaos magicians got the idea from. It saddens me that Spare isn’t really known in tumblr magickfolks, except for certain art-witch-blogs and weird chaos magic blogs. I know, I know, my lawn etc. /grump
