Thanks for the reminder @elodieunderglass. I meant to post about this when a friend of mine who does Border Morris talked about her early morning on Facebook. The above link is publicly viewable video from the Stone The Crows Border Morris Side in Lancashire Facebook page if you wanted to see what it looked like to Dance the Sun Up in Northern England on 1st May 2024. Just ignore Zuck's clickthroughs - one doesn't need an account and tumblr wouldn't let me embed a video in a reblog
Around the world today, the penumbra of the rising of the first sun of May is lined with onlookers and wellwishers, eyes on the eastern horizon to catch the first glimpse of a new season.
Because in our hearts, this is how summer returns to the northern hemisphere; this sun a baton passed in the annual relay as the south prepares for what winter may bring.
Among our number, where the hilltops flatten enough for people to trust their feet in the gloom, for over a century now morris dancers have set out in the fading dark to dance in the dawn, for the same reason we do anything: because it's what we do. That's all tradition is, after all.
And every year, alongside the bells, a passage from Terry Pratchett's Hogfather rings in my mind.
"The sun would have risen just the same, yes?"
NO.
"Oh, come on. You can't expect me to believe that. It's an astronomical fact."
THE SUN WOULD NOT HAVE RISEN.
...
"Really? Then what would have happened, pray?"
A MERE BALL OF FLAMING GAS WOULD HAVE ILLUMINATED THE WORLD.
And so, every year, follow the sound of bells and sticks, the chorus of voices singing Hal And Tow, and you'll find a bunch of knackered weirdos in the middle of nowhere in daft hats and a chill breeze, but proud of what they've done.
After all, we just made the sun rise.

“Our view of man will remain superficial so long as we fail to go back to that origin [of silence], so long as we fail to find, beneath the chatter of words, the primordial silence, and as long as we do not describe the action which breaks this silence. the spoken word is a gesture, and its meaning, a world.” ― Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Phenomenology of Perception

Within the world of Leverage there are many, many people who've heard whisperings of Leverage International. But it's not like you can just google them and send an email query when you have a problem that needs solving. That wouldn't be prudent, given that the bad guys are aware of them, too.
One method that has been extremely successful at catching their attention, however, has been fanfiction. Now, instead of daydreaming about being saved, folks are writing up little stories on AO3 about how they've been wronged by the rich and powerful, unable to get justice by traditional means, and how Leverage swooped in to save the day.
Without fail, someone has been in touch with them within a couple of days with both a plan and a promise to make things right.
Of course, this is because Hardison has the "Leverage" fandom tag favorited and checks in on it hourly.

Arborescence (treeness) has happened—and unhappened—many times in evolutionary history. Plants are nothing if not plastic. Some herbaceous plants like strawberries have woody ancestors while some woody plants like mulberries have herbaceous ancestors. In other words, arborescence exemplifies convergent evolution. Different evolutionary pathways can produce similar treelike outcomes in gene expressions. Taking the form of a tree brings specific disadvantages (slow growth, immobility) along with distinct advantages (stability, longevity). Even grasslike angiosperms (monocots) can achieve treelike form if they produce enough lignin to rigidify and thicken their outer tissue. Palms are monocots that can grow taller than most lignophytes. Other monumental monocots include dragon trees and Joshua trees, both in the asparagus family. Arborescence is dynamic: not an evolutionary state but a strategy shared by various genera. Its expression varies within the same species. Depending on habitat, the same plant might present as a tall, single-trunked individual—a classic "tree"—or a lowly, multitrunked shrub.

""‘Metre’ and ‘magic’ – along with ‘mother’ and ‘matter’ – derive from the same ancient root. Of all the ways that poems structure language physically, through repetition, none is more integral, eloquent and wondrous than metre. Every language has its metres, sometimes dozens (in Sanskrit, hundreds). Metres are rhythmical strategies that transform meaningful features of ordinary speech – such as accent, tone or syllable-length – into patterns that simultaneously inhabit and transcend the poetic line. Metre makes it possible to remember words – from ‘thirty days hath September’ to epic poems that take days to recite – which is why poets are revered as carriers of history, culture and religion in oral-based societies. Rhythmic language has also been essential to traditional healers: shamans, medicine people, seers, griots, völvas. The continued attraction of metre today attests to its hypnotic impact, whether in sports chants, political slogans or advertising jingles, not to mention children’s books.
If you want to come to know yourself more fully – to learn the languages not only of your mind but also of your heart and body – metre can be a strong ally, in offering the key to a wordless code that underlies the surface meanings of words. I had the experience – rare nowadays – of learning metre early, and have dedicated much of my life to this art. Now I pass it along to others – not only other poets, but anyone in search of self-understanding and transformation – a calling that I consider a sacred trust. I have seen metre’s rhythms, written in a journal or casually spoken, revealing insights that the surface meanings of words can hide; and I have seen the same rhythms, made conscious, used to cultivate overlooked parts of the self."

“This is who we are, I think,” John summarizes. “Daniel’s the adventurer. He pushes for new sounds, new directions. He tries things that I haven’t thought of. He’s a lot more daring than I am, and he enriches the whole thing. Cody’s the musician. He’s a savant at music. He understands music. We depend on him to rescue us.”
And what about John’s contribution? With characteristic understatement, he concludes: “I’m the experience. I’ve done music for movies before.”
-John Carpenter, from the Lost Themes IV: Noir page/Sacred Bones Records
