Morro Bay, CA
Morro Bay (Morro, Spanish for "Hill") is a seaside city in San Luis Obispo County, California. Located on the Central Coast of California, the city population was 10,757 as of the 2020 census, up from 10,234 at the 2010 census. The town overlooks Morro Bay, a natural embayment with an all-weather small craft commercial and recreational harbor.
The prehistory of Morro Bay relates to Chumash settlement, particularly near the mouth of Morro Creek. At least as early as the Millingstone Horizon thousands of years before present, there was an extensive settlement along the banks and terraces above Morro Creek. A tribal site on present-day Morro Bay was named tsɨtqawɨ, Obispeño for "Place of the Dogs".
The first European land exploration of Alta California, the Spanish Portolá expedition, came down Los Osos Valley and camped near today's Morro Bay on September 8, 1769. Franciscan missionary and expedition member Juan Crespí noted in his diary that "we saw a great rock in the form of a round morro".
The first recorded Filipinos to visit America arrived at Morro Bay on October 18, 1587, from the Spanish galleon Nuestra Señora de la Esperanza; one of whom was killed by local Native Americans while scouting ahead.

Plant of the Day
Sunday 5 February 2023
A relatively fast growing succulent Agave attenuata (foxtail agave) produces an evergreen rosette of silvery, pale green leaves on top of a thick stem. The common name comes from the tall dense stem of greenish yellow bell shaped flowers which arch over, because of their weight.

I am pleased to share that five of my poems appear in the inaugural issue of The Argyle, “Things My Uncles Made in Prison,” “Two Inches,” “Lucy’s Last Days,” “Flores,” and “motley.” Thank you to editor David Estringel.
Flores
When Abuela used to tell me about Mexico, she would
always talk about the flowers. On Avenida Tulum, I am
just another tourist browsing the fruit stands and strip malls,
but with every blossom I see, I hear her voice: dahlias
and passion flowers, birds of paradise, pineapple sage,
laelia orchids, frangipani, beds of agave, even the clusters
of seagrape on the shore whisper, Remember me.
When I return to tallgrass prairie and feed corn, when
the August sun has scorched the land to straw and dust,
I do not forget, even as I struggle to reconcile that to this,
her humble garden of tomato plants, the invasive purple
trumpet vines and morning glories overtaking the chain link fence,
the ragged robin roses swallowing the porch. Not even a lawn,
but a tangle of ground ivy, foxtail, and dandelions. How she
regretted having the old elm tree cut down, robbing the yard
of shade. The alley cats she used to feed sunning themselves
on the patio. Descendants of those cats roam here still, rolling
in the same river loam where we scattered her ashes.
When the monarch butterflies drift through our bluffs and
bottomlands on their way down to Michoacán, their wings
the color of marigolds, the flowers of the dead, surely they
carry some of this with them, binding place to place, flood plain
to flood plain. They carry her with them. She has become
a part of this land, this place of sunflowers and butterfly
milkweed and white hawthorn blossoms, and they carry her,
on flame-colored wings, home to Zamora.

Just really in love with the way the light is hitting the succulent shelf today. From left to right we have Watch Chain, Foxtail Agave, Jade Plant, Elephant Plant, Starfish Cactus, Lady Finger Cactus and Happy Bean together in the white planter (they were planted and sold this way, I really need to separate them because they have utterly different watering needs) and finally a Kalanchoe that desperately needs to be trimmed.
Colorful backdrop provided by a 100 year old maple.
I've lived in this house for 7 years and we are moving at the end of this month. I think the tree is the thing I'll miss most.

Agave attenuata is a species of flowering plant in the family Asparagaceae, commonly known as the foxtail or lion's tail. The name swan's neck agave refers to its development of a curved inflorescence, unusual among agaves. Native to the plateaux of central west Mexico, as one of the unarmed agaves, it is popular as an ornamental plant in gardens. The Latin specific epithet attenuata means "with a narrow point".
Ага́ва оття́нутая (лат. Agáve attenuáta) — растение-суккулент; вид рода Агава (Agave) семейства Агавовые (Agavaceae).

My oldest foxtail agave has begun her final stage of life. The flowering period. 15 years old and this is her last big show. It's at least 12 feet high and still growing. Amazing, beautiful, and a little sad. (at San Diego, California) https://www.instagram.com/p/Clwl0KKS7ua/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Almost finished flowering, Swan's Neck Agave, see the flowering progress from 14th May until now, 4 months of flowering (Agave attenuata) also known as the Foxtail or Lion's tail. Native to the plateau of central west Mexico. The last photos show the offsets that have formed and the seed pods. If you keep them in a pot you can keep the size down. It dies off after flowering but then lots of suckers come from the base. #agave #SwansNeckAgave #agaveplant #foxtailagarve #agaveattenuata #flowers #abcmygarden #succulent #australiangarden #myplants #waterwise (at Belmont, New South Wales, Australia) https://www.instagram.com/p/ChHJuz1vuAf/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
