Ocean Vista Point, CA
San Simeon (Spanish: San Simeón, meaning "St. Simon") is a village and Census-designated place on the Pacific coast of San Luis Obispo County, California, United States. Its position along State Route 1 is about halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco, each of those cities being roughly 230 miles (370 km) away. A key feature of the area is Hearst Castle, a hilltop mansion built for William Randolph Hearst in the early 20th century that is now a tourist attraction. The area is also home to a large northern elephant sealrookery, known as the Piedras Blancas rookery, located 7 miles (11 km) north of San Simeon on Highway 1.

22-hour road trip, one real meal, one restaurant to choose. We chose wisely: The Fig Tree Restaurant.
Unpretentious but elegant, professional but warmly personal, cozy but private. The food? About as close to perfect as one could hope.
Free advice: Ask to be served by Edward. Ask when you make the reservation. Wait for him if you have to. Because you want Edward to just choose your meal for you.
We always ask our servers what their favorites are. Usually, they point to the most expensive items. As did Edward. But there was a sincerity about him, a genuine eagerness to advocate for his choices. So we went it & loved every bite of them.
We started with the fois gras, which is what drew us here. It was both seasoned & cooked perfectly, a melt-in-your-mouth dream for this unapologetic carnivore. The accompanying chutney was a well-matched foil of sweet-tart tastes and toothy-crunchy textures. The foie gras and the chutney each were outstanding on their own: neither needed the other — but together they were divine.
Then chorizo-stuffed calamari. I adore squid in all its manifestations, so I didn’t even read the description closely. It’s not deep-fried or breaded except for 2 perfectly done tentacles, so small they are almost garnish. But the main bit is a little 3-inch football, a tiny whole squid, filled with house-made chorizo. Alone, it might have been too salty + bold for more than one bight, but paved with the eggplant agrodolce, it was wonderful. Had there been a teaspoon or two more of the roasted pepper puree, it would have been perfection.
My husband’s lamb tenderloin was undeniably good. But what I loved about his dish was the supporting actors: the risotto, surprisingly flavored with a raisin-mint agrodolce, and the pistachio gremolata, which I need to replicate at home.
But the real star of the show was my dish, the one you could tell Edward really loved: the Chilean sea bass & lobster with saffron risotto on lobster ragu. I know what you are thinking: lobster in North Carolina? (My mom said the same thing.) But this beat out anything In Main or Massachusetts. Lobsteriest lobster ever. Like lobster-infused lobster meat. You know how a fruity Jelly Belly is more fruity than the real fruit? It was like a Jelly Belly lobster, but cooked to perfect tenderness, as was the sea bass.
I could eaten a vat of the saffron-lover's risotto all by itself. But what really has me wanting to lick the plate was that lobster “ragu." If you love lobster bisque, you’ll want to lick your plate, too.
Ed chose my dessert, too: chèvre cheesecake. Not what I would've pricked, but I loved it. I loved it so much that I finished off the distracting guava topping, yummy crust, & blueberry sauce so I could enjoy the chèvre cheesecake all naked and pure. But the best thing on the plate? The house-made honey ice cream.
But the real dessert winner was the limoncello custard. It had sounded, on the menu, a tad overreaching, even pretentious, with its thyme pain de genes, toasted pine nuts, & black gelee, its candied orange zest and ricotta gelato. But no: it was a perfect combination of items, each delightful on its own... but magic when assembled on one’s tongue.
And that is the real, rare gift of The Fig Tree: combining perfectly executed elements in unexpected ways so that the end result far exceeds the sum of its parts.
It might just be worth scheduling some overnight layovers at CLT to Uber on over here. I'll have to start scheduling my flights around Edwards schedule.

Florida is another of our favourite destinations and there are many great things to do in Sarasota County, like visiting The Ringling. It’s the State Art Museum for Florida and houses the historic Asolo theater, an impressive museum of art and Ca’ D’ Zan mansion as well as the famous circus museum. The new Kotler-Coville Glass Pavilion features 68 glass artworks from 5 continents. We share our pick of the best beaches and restaurants in Sarasota County, Florida.
Wining and Dining
OSH is a fantastic new restaurant in Beauchamp Place, Knightsbridge. Spread over three floors of an elegant Georgian townhouse, it includes a cocktail bar, private lounge and dining areas. Specializing in Central Asian cuisine, it showcases the intercultural heritage of the region. Blending the best traditional and contemporary influences, OSH takes you on a culinary journey along the Silk Route.
We were impressed with how healthy the food is, particularly the soups and salads. Persimmon, pomegranate and tangerine was a novel combination that worked really well, whilst tiger prawns with crispy sweet potato in a chilli sauce were a moreish treat. OSH has a market section where you can purchase a wide variety of traditional Uzbek fruits and vegetables to take home. These are delivered from Central Asia on a daily basis, so everything is extremely fresh. Pickled Asian cherry tomatoes were bursting with flavour and an Uzbek tomato carpaccio was equally delicious. We also recommend the Kamtchatka King Crab with red caviar and avocado mousse. Shashlik is a popular dish of grilled and skewered fish or meat cubes popular in Central Asia. OSH has a great selection of these, such as the Chilean sea bass with lemon and ginger or the duck, lemongrass and honey shashlik. There’s an extensive wine list and artisanal cocktails to enjoy with your meal. Save room for the superb desserts including the signature honey cake, sour cream cake or fresh fruit sorbets.
Chocolate is one of our guilty pleasures yet thanks to OCTO chocolate it’s now guilt-free…This dairy-free, organic chocolate is also vegan friendly, gluten-free and soy-free. They use the highest grade organic Coconut Blossom Nectar as a natural sweetener and the best cocoa beans sourced only from ecological farms. It’s a lovely range of craft chocolate bars, nuts and figs covered with chocolate. Our personal favourite are the dates covered in raw chocolate. If you mention code Suze10x when purchasing before midnight on 8 April 2018 you’ll receive 10% off and a free bonus product – a Raw Chocolate Bar with Goji Berries.

William Randolph Hearst Memorial State Beach, CA
William Randolph Hearst Memorial State Beach is located near the historic town of San Simeon along California State Route 1, in San Luis Obispo County, California, United States. It is named for newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst (1863–1951), whose family is closely associated with the area.
William Randolph Hearst Memorial State Beach is located in northern San Simeon, California, directly below historic Hearst Castle in San Luis Obispo County. William Randolph Hearst State Beach, or "The Cove" as it is locally known, was the hub of trade and shipping in the area, which was once home to the Hearst family newspaper empire.
Before the 1800s the land was known to be inhabited by the Chumash. In the mid-1830s, Mission San Miguel was built and by the early 1850s a small Portuguese whaling village had been built on the peninsula jutting out into the sea. Over the course of ten years the small village managed to hunt down some 370 whales. Though records of what type of whales were not kept, it is assumed the majority of the whales were gray and humpbacks, as these are the whales that are commonly spotted in the area. This village was short-lived, because only ten years after it was built a severe drought caused the town to move to find fresh water.
George Hearst bought nearly 50,000 acres, establishing the ground work for his son William's empire. The Hearst family owned all the land as far as the eye could see from their castle until the early 1950s when the family donated a huge section of land to the state and sold miles of shoreline to be reserved for public use. The pier George Hearst built in the 1800s no longer exists, but a new one was built in the 1900s just a few hundred yards down the beach that now stands in its place. Today the beach is a California state beach.

Morro Bay, CA
Morro Bay (Morro, Spanish for "Hill") is a seaside city in San Luis Obispo County, California. Located on the Central Coast of California, the city population was 10,757 as of the 2020 census, up from 10,234 at the 2010 census. The town overlooks Morro Bay, a natural embayment with an all-weather small craft commercial and recreational harbor.
The prehistory of Morro Bay relates to Chumash settlement, particularly near the mouth of Morro Creek. At least as early as the Millingstone Horizon thousands of years before present, there was an extensive settlement along the banks and terraces above Morro Creek. A tribal site on present-day Morro Bay was named tsɨtqawɨ, Obispeño for "Place of the Dogs".
The first European land exploration of Alta California, the Spanish Portolá expedition, came down Los Osos Valley and camped near today's Morro Bay on September 8, 1769. Franciscan missionary and expedition member Juan Crespí noted in his diary that "we saw a great rock in the form of a round morro".
The first recorded Filipinos to visit America arrived at Morro Bay on October 18, 1587, from the Spanish galleon Nuestra Señora de la Esperanza; one of whom was killed by local Native Americans while scouting ahead.
