I feel bad for entomologists who study eusocial species and have to deal with the totally incorrect folk wisdom of how they work. That said - still a great sci fi trope that I am dearly fond of.
The near-inevitable tendency of longrunning franchises to retcon 'distributed hive mind' to 'single loadbearing queen + drones' is bad and boring and writers who propose it should be smacked on the nose with a newspaper.
Incredibly more interesting when the hive mind isn't just an always chaotic evil swarm of even-more-okay-to-kill space orcs.
