CRETTO DI GIBELLINA - ALBERTO BURRI

The town of Gibellina in Sicily was flattened by an earthquake in 1968 that killed hundreds and left the small town in ruins.

The artist and sculptor Alberto Burri coated the rubble of the city in white concrete with large enough cracks to walk in, resulting in a monumental and labyrinthine landscape artwork spanning over 85,000 square meters.

It's 'parts of me that support you' that are outlined as the bones.#For raiden his vitals are literally keeping sunny alive. So his rib cage. For the colonel he's constantly feeding raiden bad info to keep-#-the mission afloat. His skull #For emma she created the arsenal gear worm (hands)#And for rose i mean obviously like. shes pregnant in this game. but its got a bigger meaning for the plot and for raiden specifically #since it's part of the reason why he tries to be better. Her connection to him is what keeps him grounded during the whole mission #and together they all form the 'vital' organs #Alternatively i wanted to name this 'malfunctioning machine' but anyone can probably figure out that one if they wanted. reading xie lian’s POV is actually hilarious once you realise xie lian isn’t oblivious at all, he basically guesses most things immediately, he’s just taken the veteran autism tactic of “it’s too much effort to figure out when it’s appropriate to mention that i know something, so i’ll just pretend i don’t know until someone says it aloud”. sometimes it turns into a bit. the truth might be embarrassingly obvious, but social cues are hard, and xie lian has infinite time to wait for the other person to blink first.

okay okay but the thing with ariadne & the minotaur I'm thinking about is like. the minotaur is inside the labyrinth and she's outside of it. she doesn't see the minotaur and he doesn't see her but probably they both know each other exist. maybe they both wonder about each other. so what's making me chew on glass is that she sends theseus in, to a brother whose face she barely knows but still thinks about, and he kills him and the minotaur's gone, just like that, without her ever seeing him again, and just like that she's brotherless. And Then. thinking about This Line from ariadne's lament in catullus 64:

respersum iuuenem fraterna caede secuta

("following a young man spattered with my brother's blood")

which like. yes it's metaphorical but also thinking that possibly all she ever saw again was theseus walking out of the labyrinth dripping in her brother's blood. what it must be like to have a brother one moment and then not have anything of a brother except what's spattered across the face of a man who she's given everything up for and she's now supposed to kiss. aughhgbnghn

ANALYSIS - SITE READING

a figure-ground map is used to place a site in context.....the context of a major street (Poydras) and the urban fabric around it. different tones distinguish the building fabric along the street from the block fabric. the extent of the map is controlled by a walking radius - 1 mile radius - depicted with white dots.
