language use in kiseki
I don't think this has been mentioned before but the kiseki scriptwriters/directors actually use language to reflect the characters' backgrounds/level of education. This is purely from observing the language shown in the drama, I'm unsure if it is reflective of Taiwanese society.
We know that whilst not well to do, Bai Zong Yi is a top student. He's well-educated and learned. Fan Ze Rui, given his privileged background, is also the same. This is reflected in their speech: they use standard mandarin, and I don't remember them having used slangs. This is one of the reasons they click.
Contrast this with Ai Di, Chen Yi, and the soy milk shop owner. The owner mainly uses minnanyu (taiwanese hokkien), interspersed with mandarin. For Ai Di and Chen Yi, they mainly use mandarin but with certain minnanyu words interspersed. Ai Di also uses quite a bit of slang.
Tumblr media
Here Ai Di says "我爸妈毒kiang了啦". Kiang is minnanyu slang for tripping on drugs.
Tumblr media
Here Chen Yi says "an zua 变这样" (how did you become like this).
We know that Ai Di left school, and given how Chen Yi's speech pattern is similar to Ai Di's just with less slang, we can assume Chen Yi also left (and may even have been more educated). This suggests that the use of minnanyu is intentional to show that they are less privileged in terms of education/background.
This lends some insight into the boundary between Fan Ze Rui and Ai Di & Chen Yi. Fan Ze Rui is only affiliated with Yiyun Meng because the 2 of them treat him as a friend and the Fan family has ties to Yiyun Meng. He is called 哥 because he is a friend, not because he is a brother. And this stems from his privileged background. He can't speak the same language/lingo and he finds himself unable to assimilate.
The writers go on to juxtapose the reality of Bai Zong Yi (now affiliated with some Yiyun Meng members) and Ai Di, against the normal lives peers their age lead.
Tumblr media
This scene was quite funny. Fang Zi An thought Fan Ze Rui and Ai Di were undercover policemen, and he thought it was as though he was in a Stephen Chow film, getting into character as a calefare speaking cantonese (“meng ngo ah a-sir. ngo hai ho yan ah. nei hai caai lou. nei hai caai lou!”). Cantonese isn't widely spoken in Taiwan and we can see the faces Fan Ze Rui and Ai Di make at each other showing that they don't really get what Fang Zi An is saying at all.
And Fang Zi An is an example of how kids their age should be - carefree, nerdy, passionate etc., which Bai Zong Yi and Ai Di do not have the privilege of. Bai Zong Yi has to worry about his family/finances, while Ai Di has real danger to contend with at every turn.
It's just so interesting how kiseki decided to use language to add flavour to their characters. And I love how these characters from vastly different worlds have collided with each other.

FAN ZE RUI IS THE BOTTOM?!
Was I the only one who didn't see it coming... Like they're both such strong characters, neither of them playing into the stereotypes most BLs create but honestly I at least thought the age one was gonna take it, purely because getting railed by a 17yr old in your old age is gonna do some damage.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Like i cant remember how old Fan Ze Rui is but competing with the stamina of a horny 17yr old who just had his first love returned... Idek how he was walking the rest of this episode.
But also I did like how both characters later on showed weakness in front of each other, and didn't suddenly change who they are to play into a more "femanine" and "masculine" role. They both vowed to protect each other in ways they know and also expressed their insecurities. Idk it was just beautiful and refreshing.
Ik Thailand is like the King of dishing out BLs but Taiwan is just overall better at plots, and tugging on heart strings. The few dramas they do put out throughout the year are very polished and just very heartwarming and easy to watch.
That being said.

CAN THESE TWO NOT BE IN ONE SINGLE DRAMA WITHOUT ONE OF THEM DYING OR LIKE JUST BEING THE "TRAGIC" COUPLE LIKE WTF MAN GIVE THEM A BREAK!!!!!!!!!

Zong Yi: Hey Ze Rui, have a nice day!
Ze Rui: Thank you Zong Yi!
Zong Yi: Now you try.

Can I just say how bemused I am that most watchers collectively assumed that Ze Rui would be the more dominant one in their love scene, due to him being ‘older’, ‘a gangster’, ‘more experienced’ (take your pick). And were surprised that Zong Yi topped (at least from what we have seen). Yet from what we have seen of Ze Rui this bedroom dynamic makes sense. Ze Rui has been called out for not being a ‘good gangster’. He is a strawberry cake loving softie, especially when it comes to Zong Yi. Ze Rui may be older, but he has always interacted with Zong Yi on his turf (either at his home or school), and he has never pushed anything onto Ze Rui beyond his semi-conscious early morning kisses and fumblings. He has been letting Zong Yi lead the relationship from the get go.

Ze Rui wants to be a house-husband so fucking bad. The happiest he ever was in this show was doing Zong Yi's laundry and cooking for him and then smiling as he watched him eat it.
That's all he wants. It's so obvious.

Oh, Milord, now I kind of want to know your opinions on the nc scenes in kiseki xD bc I totally get what you mean on the emotion before spice part, but I would love to see how that would apply for you in kiseki
okay whoof im sober now and can piece together coherent thoughts for the most part (i was gonna grab gifs and make gifs for this but im so sooo lazy im so sorry)
so if i sort the kdtm nc scenes for emotional value over spice i think my sorting would be -
Fan Ze Rui and Bai Zong Yi Reunion 🌸
Tumblr media
i mean this is one of the most emotional nc scenes i've ever seen and i've already said my piece on how much i love crying sex. then you add in the lighting and the soft "kiddo" and i'm done, i've exploded into a million pieces into the atmosphere.
Ai Di and Chen Yi's First Time 🌸
Tumblr media
i could talk about this scene all day but just. ai di crying because he knows he shouldn't be doing this but he's selfish and this might be the only time he can ever have this, the only way he can ever have chen yi is if chen yi thinks he's someone else. and then the fact that chen yi knows it's ai di and realizes he wants this too, you can see the realization on his face all the way through. UGH. one of the scenes of all time.
Bai Zong Yi and Fan Ze Rui's First Time 🌸
Tumblr media
i will NEVER be over the way ze rui climbed his man like a cat tree. ze rui's babygirlism is everything to me and kai conveyed it so perfectly in everything ze rui did.
from here on the scenes are all kind of equal to me so i won't really go into them much but kdtm has some of my all time favorite NC scenes and just in general favorite intimacy scenes. i think it really highlights all the different ways people find intimacy in one another and shows how sex isn't always some heated affair driven purely by lust - or even love. it can be something complex and layered.

Kiseki: Dear to me
Episode 7: Love realised partly
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ze Rui and Zong Yi have each other now, in every sense. Ai Di and Ze Rui have dealt with the drug problem in school and now all that needs to happen is Chen Yi realising his real feelings for Ai Di. This is the first time Chen Yi has smiled in this whole show and it took Ai Di dressing up as Red riding hood for that to happen. Damn. Please smile more Chen Yi.

Thinking about how I started Kiseki: Dear to Me simply because I saw some gifs on my dash. Didn’t watch a trailer. Didn’t read a synopsis. All I knew was that there was a gang involved and two couples to root for.
So I was shocked, jaw dropped had to pause the video, when it’s revealed that one of the boys walking out of prison at the beginning was a top student in school, planning to become a doctor.
Like how does a kid like that wind up in prison?! I was hooked from that moment on. Great reveal, and one of the reasons it’s really fun to go into a show with little to no background info.
I adored Bai Zong Yi and Fan Ze Rui and was captivated by Ai Di and Chen Yi. It was so fun seeing the chaos on the dash each week.
Just a Kiseki appreciation post ^^
