Yesterday a wizard entered New York with a case, a case full of magical creatures. And unfortunately, some have escaped.

It always amuses me that the actress who portrayed Modesty is actually called Faith in real life because it fits so perfectly into the Barebone name scheme.

What doesn't amuse me is that she is now 17 years old.

Rambling Reviews: Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (2016)
*5th viewing*
Now, to preface, I’ll just say that I waited to see this film for little over a year. See, back in November, 2015, I’d just been getting obsessed with Colin Farrell, which is when I found out that they were making a new Harry Potter movie (if I ever review the remake of Fright Night, I also have one or two stories about how that one obsession is also the reason I had even heard of Anton Yelchin about seven months before he died). Well, having been a huge Harry Potter fan when I was about ten or eleven years old, I was, naturally, really excited for this film (yeah, there was a bit of a drop-off in terms of me actively counting down the days during a period from March 11, 2016 - September, 2016, but I still couldn’t wait!). I finally got to see it on December 4, 2016, and, seeing as I already talked about this film a day or two after I first saw it, you could argue that I technically reviewed this already, but I do want to go into more depth about my thoughts on this film.
So, yeah, major spoilers ahead.
This film is set about 70 years before the first Harry Potter movie and follows Newt Scamander, a magizoologist, who comes to New York City with a magical suitcase full of creatures. However, after a rather unfortunately-timed case of suitcase switcheroo, some of Newt’s creature escape. Now on the run, he teams up with Jacob, a no-maj (non-magical person), Tina, a demoted Auror (dark wizard hunter), and Queenie (Tina’s sister) in order to recapture his creatures, all while dark forces brew around them.
Like I’ve probably said in the past, I freaking loved this movie. For starters, the story had me riveted from the title card to the end credits. I know this film could be accused of spending too much time setting up the next film, but, honestly, I didn’t get that sort of vibe. The first half of the film is rather whimsical, but the second half gets really dark, and it’s nearly seamless. Considering that this was J. K. Rowling’s first screenplay, I’d say that she did a pretty good job.
As for the characters, they were great. I could easily relate to Newt, who was awkward and seemed more comfortable around the creature he’s rescued. I also found Tina to be a pretty nice counterpart to Newt (albeit about as adorkable), but really, we all know she and Newt are pretty much guaranteed to survive the next five movies. On that same sort of note, Queenie was a pretty fun character, who looked like a ditz at first, but to be honest, she was a badass (particularly when busting her sister and Newt out of jail). Jacob was also pretty funny, and I think it’s also interesting to note that he is one of Rowling’s first normal protagonists (and he was also great as a sort of everyman). I could sum up every character if I so wished to, but honestly, I feel that if I did so, this review would last forever. I’ll just say that I hope the real Percival Graves is still alive, Credence deserved a lot better, and, admittedly, I kind of want to see Grindelwald in later films. Also, I really didn’t like Mary Lou Barebone.
Speaking of, the actors in this film were also amazing. I’ll admit, I rather liked Eddie Redmayne in Les Miserables, and I daresay he was even better in this film. I felt that his mannerisms fit Newt’s personality perfectly, and I can’t wait to see him in the next four films. Katherine Waterston and Alison Sudol were also amazing as Tina and Queenie Goldstein respectively. They had a great dynamic in portraying both their characters and as sisters. Dan Fogler might have been playing the everyman/comic relief, but he brought a lot of charm to the character of Jacob Kowalski. Colin Farrell also did a great job of portraying an absolutely despicable villain (which, after seeing the remake of Fright Night, I guess I should be used to), and Ezra Miller perfectly portrayed Credence as a vulnerable young man (who still deserved better, and I still hope his situation gets better as the films go on). Honorable mentions go out to Carmen Ejogo (Seraphina Picquery), Samantha Morton (Mary Lou Barebone), John Voight (Henry Shaw Sr.), and Faith Wood-Blagrove (Modesty Barebone).
The special effects in this film are also pretty awesome. I know people have said they aren’t as real-looking, but I liked them all the same. It still felt like they were really there, and not to mention that that first scene in Newt’s suitcase was one of the best things I saw throughout the entirety of 2016 (as lousy a year as that was). Also, the soundtrack by James Newton Howard was beautiful and fit the mood of each scene it was featured in. Lastly, I want to mention that the creatures were pretty cool/cute in their own right (I actually don’t have a favorite, but that’s because I liked them all). However, I am one to encourage Pokemon Go jokes in regards to the Swooping Evil.
Overall, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them was an amazing experience with great characters, amazing actors, a pretty good first script, some fantastic creatures (pun completely intended), and a wonderful soundtrack. Now, I’m not saying that every fan of Harry Potter is going to like this movie (that’d be ridiculous), but I will say that, personally, this was the best film I saw in 2016 (it only very narrowly beat out Star Trek Beyond). I can’t wait to see if the sequels are good, but I hope they’ll eventually say what happened to the real Percival Graves…

A big part of Credence’s character is his relationship with Graves. Can you talk about how you build that with Colin Farrell – and did you know who Graves really was?
Ezra: I did. I did know because that was always in the script. Working with Colin was an amazing experience. One thing that was really great about this production was that we had some time to rehearse, which is rare. So we had these couple days of rehearsal with just David, Colin and I in a room, going through these scenes and finding this story – a fascinating dynamic. The dynamic, even when we first started scene work, it was already so powerfully creepy and unnerving. We would get out of the room and go, “Bleh!” You know what I mean? Try to shake off all that creepiness. I’m fascinated by that dynamic.
I had a lot of fun exploring these two characters who want things from each other but are questioning whether or not they can get it. And Credence – maybe “want” isn’t a sufficient word for him because he’s really seeking all of this stuff that he desperately needs. Stuff that a lot of people need that they don’t get – love, affection and attention, and just physical contact. And Graves is, sort of, dispensing those things to keep Credence in his trap because Graves wants something from Credence. There’s a wonderful escalation of conflict, and they start to realize that they’re not gonna get what they want from each other – or at least Graves thinks he isn’t. Credence realizes that Graves is not going to be the paternal figure or the partner or the friend that he is looking for – and that’s when really things really go south.
You have an interesting relationship with your adoptive mother, but what about your adoptive sister? You seem to be protective of her but your character also seems to be seeking to turn her in at the same time. Could you talk about Modesty, and Credence’s relationship with her?
Ezra: First of all, I just have to shout out to my scene partner Faith [Wood-Blagrove], who’s just an incredible young talent. I’m almost a little scared of Faith – you know when you meet a child and they’re overdeveloped? They’re just like really smart, funny people and you’re like, “Whoa, whoa, whoa, slow down. She’s one of those. So that was one of my favorite relationships to find the dynamic of in the movie. I think they’re protective of each other, which I think is really sweet.
I think we see even a couple moments where she’s really protective of him, too, because he bears the brunt of a lot of Mary Lou’s anger and her overzealous behavior. The betrayal of her – that he is willing to give her up if she should turn out to be the person that Graves is looking for – demonstrates the desperation that Credence has to escape his reality and find something that can solve the problems that he feels are gonna destroy him if they’re not sorted out.
