oh OOOOOOH their deaths mirror each other. Tamerlane and Leo are both driven to what looks like suicide chasing hallucinations around an apartment that architecturally represents their psyche (as they destroy it), shortly after leaving/planning to leave their loving partner. (Both of them invite her in, at first. Both of them want her there. But now she's in the mirrors. She's in the walls.)
Vic and Camille are both killed/driven to death by Vic's experiments, their rivalry leading to both their deaths (Camille to prove it doesn't work, Vic to prove it does), immediately after they get left by people they are using in professional/personal ways - Camille hires Toby and Tina to sleep with them, Vic dates Ali to get her to work with her on the heart mesh.
Perry and Frederick both die in the same warehouse, looking at the ceiling, waiting for death to come to them - Perry with a look of ecstasy, Frederick in terror. Both of them are in that warehouse because they've been humiliated by Roderick and are now determined to prove themselves. Both get led here by drugs. Both involve the mutilation of an innocent, Morrie. Both of them see Verna not as another character, but something like her true self. And there's the parallel between all the mercy that Verna offers Perry - the most she offers any of them, other than Lenore - and her glee in explaining to Roderick exactly why he deserves to die like this.
And then you get the final pairing/quartet of deaths - Eliza Usher + William Longfellow vs Madeline and Roderick which is obvious but oh my god. oh my god you guys. Eliza's wall of crucifixes and clinging to Christian faith and the sanctity of pain as a way of hoping for reward after death vs Roderick putting Madeline through the agony of vivisection to 'honour' her + grant her Egyptian immortality. Both William and Roderick eat their young. Fuck.

Like with all Mike Flanagan shows, I have to sit and stew on The Fall of the House of Usher for a bit to let it fully settle, and then I'll probably have to rewatch it to get the full picture.
But what I can say now after the first watch has sat with me for 2 days is that compared to Hill House which dealt with grief, Bly Manor which dealt with love, and Midnight Mass which dealt with faith, House of Usher for me dealt with consequences. Madeline and Roderick were offered the deal that they could basically do whatever the heck they wanted, and all the consequences of their horrible actions would not be suffered by them. Which is essentially what capitalist super-rich experience all the time - and we, the ordinary people, suffer the consequences. It's funny that they thought it worked like that, but I guess they saw their father who suffered no consequences for abuse and for mistreating their mother whom he had ann affair with (if it even was that, and not rape) - but he did suffer consequences, he was strangeled to death by a dead woman. And Griswold, who seemingly suffered no consequences for his fraud and the many crimes of his company, except he did - he was literally cask of Amontillado'ed which is honestly the funniest thing! But for the Ushers, the consequences were suffered not just by the anonymous masses, not just by the thousands upon thousands that suffered and died because of their actions (powerfully depicted by the rain of bodies Verna showed Roderick in their meeting in his tower) and not by Madeline nd Roderick themselves, but very directly, very brutally, by their own children - who all in the span of a few days were driven insane and horrifically killed. They were offered this deal, and while Madeline had no children and made sure afterwards that she never would, Roderick already had two children by that point. He signed that deal not for some hypothetical children he might have, but for Frederick and Tammerlane who were already alive then, and for his 4 as of yet unborn children! They barely hesitated. The Ushers TOOK that choice away from their children, they doomed these children before they were even born. And they doomed even their grandchild before she was born. If that doesn't show the crippling consequences of actions we take today, I don't know what does. Every decision the rich and powerful make today has devastatign consequences for generations to come - not hypothetical, but very real and very dire consequences. But these people don't care about that, because it's not consequences they suffer NOW, so it's not their problem. The Ushers are charicaturized representations of that mindset, their children representations of the generations of people fucked over by their decisions. That's why I am torn between feeling glee at the bizarre demise each of the Usher children met (cause let's face it, they were all assholes and messed up) and at the same time feel immense pity for them (because the fact that they were assholes and messed up was almost not their fault but a product of growing up under the trauma Roderick and Madeleine suffered when they were children, and in a mindset where they genuinely believed being richer than God made them immune to cosequence, and because their fate had been decided for them without their knowledge).
But also, Verna gave EACH of these kids an option. They were all going to die, sure, but they were given the choice to do the right thing. Prospero was offered the chance to end his orgy and his filming of incriminating material but he chose to continue. Camille was offered the chance to turn around and go home and instead die peacefully in her sleep. Napoleon was offered the chance not to lie to his boyfriend and bring a fake 'cat' home, and instead go home, sober up, get his shit together, be honest about his fuck-ups. But he didn't. Victorine was offered the chance to say 'no, this treatment is not ready for human testing' but instead she deceived what she believed to be an innocent, desperate woman into essentially signing away her life. Tammerlane could have stopped her jealousy, her envy, and instead reach out to her husband, actually communicate, actually appreciate him, but she didn't. And Frederick, well, Verna spelled it out for him, didn't she? He had to bring her home, he had to bring out the pliers. He CHOSE to abuse and brutalize and mutilate his wife when she was completely defenseless, helpless, and innocent - yes she had gone to the orgy because she felt unappreciated, unseen, and nothing actually happened, she didn't cheat, her only 'crime' was chosing to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. He chose to be a monster to her and to their child. All of them could have stopped, could have chosen to reflect on their actions and be better, do BETTER. Instead, they doubled down on their horrific behaviour, and sealed their own fate. All except Lenore, who until the very end chose to be good, chose to be kind, chose to see the best in people. That's why she was the only one to whom Verna appeared with kindness, giving her the certainty that her life mattered, that her sacrifice would save thousands, that her mother would do incredibly good in her name in the future, and she did not die with horror and suffering, she died peaceful, quick, quiet, like Verna had offered all the others. Verna was not so much a demon as she was the personification of "actions, meet consequences".
TLDR: The Fall of the House of Usher is the hardcore version of 'play stupid games, win stupid prizes' and will for me be part of the 'rich people actually suffer consequences for their shitty actions' cinematic universe.

Madeline Usher and Daisy Buchanan
: an essay no one asked for
—————————————-
The connection between the characters Daisy Buchanan and Madeline Usher may not be the most significant imagery in Mike Flanagan’s The Fall Of The House Of Usher, however, it may have been a key insight into Madeline’s mentality.
Daisy Buchanan comes from F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, which was published in 1925, and Madeline Usher was originally from an Edgar Allen Poe’s short story The Fall Of The House Of Usher which inspired Mike Flanagan’s limited television series by the same name in 2023. The version being analyzed is the latter addition of Madeline. In the television series, one of the first appearances of young Madeline Usher is her dressed as Daisy Buchanan. Her twin brother, Roderick Usher is dressed as Jay Gatsby.
The scene is 1979, New Year's night and both twins take a seat at a bar. The curious bartender will later be revealed as Verna (an anagram for ‘Raven’ and a subject for its own essay entirely) and Madeline is laying out a plan, specifically to and not with, her brother; they are laying out an alibi.
The twins have just gotten away with the murder of Fortunato CEO Rufus Wilmot Griswold. Madeline gave him sherry laced with cyanide and seduced him into the basement, which was still in construction. She walks away from him, saying he can have her if he can get to her, but the poison kicks in and he struggles to walk, collapsing on the floor. Madeline taunts him, calling him a “big strong man.” Before this encounter, there had been a business meeting where Griswold refused to listen to Madeline, blatantly sexualizing, and telling her ‘not to fuck with him’. Every encounter between the two shows Griswold thinking he has the upper hand, however with Madeline being regarded as a genius by her brother and the audience, Griswold does not realize who is really in charge until she is laying out her plan for him while he is chained up behind a brick wall. Madeline gets away with murder.
Then at the bar, she is seen dancing and flirting with another man, returning to the bar and telling Roderick it's his turn to dance with someone. Roderick does not want to, and Madeline does not care, telling him that they need to build an alibi. He listens, and Madeline ends up having a conversation with Verna.
While there are many incidents and examples of Madeline’s genius, this is about her connection to Daisy Buchanan, and that she does all of this (minus the business meeting) dressed as Daisy Buchanan. At the end of Gatsby, Daisy gets away with murder, never being caught because she is an ‘innocent woman’ and this is all Madeline was seen as by Griswold. Throughout the series Madeline has an open distaste for men, saying “Men are as stupid as they are simple” in a future conversation with her oldest niece Tamerlane Usher. Madeline went into the situation knowing she would be underestimated and sexualized by Griswold, and her costume perfectly reflects that.
Aside from false perceptions, there is also the point of philosophy. Daisy says “I hope she’ll be a fool- that's the best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful little fool.” Madeline is anything but a fool, and time and time again she demonstrates that she is constantly aware of her surroundings. For example, in a conversation with her brother, they talk about a foster home they had been in, and how Madeline had befriended their foster mother, who practically tortured them. This alliance gave Madeline access to important documents and she was able to ruin the foster mother's life. Madeline is anything but a fool. Furthermore, in the conversation she has with Tamerlane, it seems like she has at least some sort of faith in her oldest niece; she does not want Tamerlane to be a fool, she wants her to be a savior of Fortunato Pharmaceuticals. Her other nieces, Victorine LaFourcade and Camille L’Espanya are both extremely smart as well. Camille in particular consumes knowledge voraciously, using it to benefit her in her family. This thirst for knowledge does end with her gruesome death via chimpanzee, but Camille doesn't seem to regret this.
As for Lenore Usher, Madeline’s only great niece, she is aware of how horrible her family is, with this awareness growing as the series continues. She questions people, especially her father, in both legal matters and about her mother’s care. The Usher women who had Madeline as an influence in their lives were certainly not fools. This is all to say that while that quote may be a reflection of Daisy's outlook and an insight into her beliefs, it is the inverse of what Madeline sees. Madeline sees women as superior, agreeing with Verna when she says “Women are the natural leaders of the species.”
On New Year, 1979, Roderick was dressed as Jay Gatsby as previously mentioned. The twins’ classic couple costume might even hint at the roles they play in each other's lives- or rather Madeline in his. Madeline is the planner, this is evident from the beginning. In her own words “If it was our birthday he would forget to eat cake unless I took a bite first.” Roderick needs Madeline to lead him, to mother him, even. The comparison is in no way sexual or romantic of course, but it could highlight who they became in each other's eyes. Roderick saw Madeline as a leader, a strong woman to follow, even if he didn't realize it. In contrast, Madeline had times when she saw Roderick as she saw all men- something to be managed.
It's unclear if Mike Flanagan thought too deeply into the comparison but that does not stifle its relevance to Madeline Usher’s character. Daisy Buchanan represents how the world perceived her, at least for a time, the opposite of how she saw life, and who she became in her brother’s life. In conclusion, understanding Daisy's relationship with Madeline is key to understanding Madeline Usher, “a queen without a crown.”

The Most Common Types of Fairy Godmother in "Cinderella" Adaptations
Since @ariel-seagull-wings and I have already posted about the different portrayals of Cinderella and her prince, I thought it might be nice to look at the different portrayals of the other characters too.
Each portrayal of the Fairy Godmother is unique, but patterns do emerge across the different adaptations. I've found that the different portrayals of the character can be divided into five categories, with some portrayals combining two of them together.
The Regal, Ethereal Lady
Tumblr media
This beautiful, elegant creature is emphatically a fairy godmother, not a godmother who happens to be a fairy. She wears a gorgeous flowing gown, not of any earthly fashion, and though her age is indeterminate, she seems youthful yet wise. Her demeanor is kind and gentle, yet serious and stately, though she might have a slight playful streak. She takes on the role of the story’s moral authority as well, usually emphasizing that she comes to reward Cinderella for her goodness. Often, she first appears disguised as an old beggar woman to test the respective virtue of Cinderella and her stepfamily, and Cinderella earns her good will by giving her bread while the stepfamily scorns her. Sometimes she has attendant fairies or other magic-users to assist her as well: she might even be portrayed as the Fairy Queen, who lives in the forest like Shakespeare’s Titania and has countless fairies, elves, and sprites as her command. Fairy Godmothers of this type are most often seen in earlier adaptations: they include “La Fée” in Massenet’s opera Cendrillon, the Fairy Godmother in Prokofiev’s ballet, Inez Marcel in the 1914 silent film, Varvara Myasnikova in the 1947 Russian film, Celeste Holm in the 1965 version of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s musical, and the animated Fairy Godmothers both in the 1935 Betty Boop cartoon Poor Cinderella and in the 1979 Russian animated short.
The Grandmother Figure
Tumblr media
This Fairy Godmother is a little old woman, and she’s very human as fairies go. She might not be regal, or beautiful, but she radiates a sense of warmth and comfort like all the best grandmothers do. Her sweetness, gentleness, and maternal affection are just what Cinderella needs in her despair, and sometimes she can be adorably absentminded – forgetting where she put her wand, almost sending Cinderella off to the ball in her rags, etc. – which adds gentle comic relief to the story. Yet she also conveys the wisdom that comes with age, and her magic is just as powerful as that of any younger, more glittering fairy. The quintessential Fairy Godmother of this type is the one voiced by Verna Felton in Disney’s classic 1950 animated film. Several other animated versions aimed at children feature grandmotherly Godmothers too, like the versions from Jetlag Productions and Burbank Animation Studios. In the 1995 musical A Tale of Cinderella, “La Stella” is Cinderella’s actual grandmother, whose magic sadly couldn’t save her daughter’s life, but can save her granddaughter’s future. Jean Stapleton’s Fairy Godmother in the 1985 Faerie Tale Theatre adaptation is also very grandmotherly, although she has additional glamour and a sense of humor that bring her closer to the next type of Fairy Godmother on the list (see below).
The Sassy Glamour Queen
Tumblr media
She’s beautiful, she’s elegant, she’s as smart as a whip, and she knows it! This is a more modern, lighthearted twist on the Regal, Ethereal Lady. The sparkle of the gorgeous gown she wears is matched only by the sparkle of her playful wit, and her confidence in herself is surpassed only by her confidence in Cinderella. Her sense of humor lifts Cinderella’s spirit, while her intelligence, poise, and indefatigable spirit make her a strong role model for the girl. Yet though kind and caring, this Godmother tends to be a bit more standoffish than others – though not in a bad way. She urges Cinderella to solve her own problems, not just rely on her, and to have courage and faith in herself against all odds. The most famous Godmother of this type is probably Whitney Houston in the 1997 version of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s musical. But Edie Adams’ elegant and mischievous Godmother in the original 1957 Rodgers and Hammerstein telecast is a good example too: although since she spends most of the story masquerading as a human, she combines this portrayal with another type (see the bottom of the list). Meanwhile, Jean Stapleton’s Faerie Tale Theatre Godmother has the elegance and humor of this type, but as an elderly woman, she combines it with the Grandmother Figure. Last, but not least, is Billy Porter’s nonbinary “Fab G.” in the 2021 Sony/Amazon musical.
The Eccentric Mage
Tumblr media
This funny and kooky Godmother is one of those beings who combine magic with just a little insanity. Her mind is like her powers: not entirely of this earth. Like the Regal, Ethereal Lady, she tends to disguise herself as a poor, ragged old woman to test Cinderella’s virtue and befriend her before the ball – but she takes it a step further and masquerades as a crazy homeless woman, who spouts odd remarks and whom anyone less kind than Cinderella might try to avoid. Yet even when not in disguise, she’s a bit of a ditzy oddball, who sometimes fumbles her spells once or twice before she gets them right: e.g. dressing Cinderella in the wrong type of clothing at first, or turning the pumpkin into the wrong item, or accidentally making it grow to a gigantic, greenhouse-shattering size before it becomes a coach. Fairy Godmothers of this type include Helena Bonham Carter in Disney’s 2015 live action film, “Crazy Marie” in the 2013 Broadway version of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s musical, Joyce Gordon in the Muppets’ Hey, Cinderella! and Estelle Winwood as Mrs. Toquet in The Glass Slipper. Although since Mrs. Toquet never takes off her “crazy poor woman” disguise, she combines this variant with another one: The Godmother Who Happens to Be a Fairy (see below).
The Godmother Who Happens to Be a Fairy
Tumblr media
This is the most human portrayal of the Fairy Godmother: an ordinary woman who just happens to have magical powers, which she hides until they’re needed. Cinderella typically befriends her long before the ball, sometimes knowing her from childhood. She might be a household servant, or a kindly neighbor, or a traveling portrait painter, but whoever she is, you wouldn’t guess that she’s a fairy. She might even pretend not to believe in magic. She might also be Cinderella’s literal godmother – a close friend of her late mother’s, or even a relative. But no matter who she is, the friendship and the simple, human advice she gives to Cinderella (e.g. never to lose hope, or not to be afraid to love the Prince) are just as valuable as her spells. Edie Adams’ mischievous Godmother combines this characterization with the Sassy Glamour Queen in the 1957 Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, Estelle Winwood’s Mrs. Toquet in The Glass Slipper combines it with the Eccentric Mage, and Annette Crosbie’s sensible and ladylike yet quirky Godmother in The Slipper and the Rose combines it slightly with the Eccentric Mage too. Other examples are the artist Paulette in the anime series Cinderella Monogatari, the cook Mandy in the original novel of Ella Enchanted (who is also the Grandmother Figure), and the pasta-stirring grandmother La Stella in the musical A Tale of Cinderella (ditto).

You can have my absence of faith//You can have my everything – Tamerlane Usher/Verna
A/N: Day 12 for @flufftober 's FluffSpring 2024.
Tumblr media
Neither of them expects to feel quite so possessive about one another. Tamerlane was always supposed to be just another victim of a deal, until, one day, she wasn’t. Until she fought back with all she had. Her lack of faith in herself shows even then, the woman’s body folding at the last moment. Verna, possessive by then, moves to gather her before the fate she should have can come true. She holds her, even as she screams and claws and fights to die, fighting herself as well as Verna until, finally, Verna captures her, pulls her into a kiss so deeply possessive she stills, then, finally, responds. Possessiveness becomes their thing, then. The Raven and The Dove, making deals and making plans, making out and making love. Possession is, after all, their reason for living.

Tim Scott reveals the 2024 Presidential Exploratory Committee
Tumblr media
The most prominent Black Republican politician, Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina, established an exploratory committee for a 2024 presidential bid on Wednesday. Mr. Scott explained the origins of his decision to start the committee during a morning interview with "Fox and Friends" that followed the announcement. He mentioned the weeks he had spent campaigning in early primary states like South Carolina, Iowa, and New Hampshire. "I've discovered that people are desperate for hope. They are in desperate need of an upbeat, inspiring message rooted in traditional principles, he claimed. As part of his Faith in America tour, Mr. Scott spoke at a country club event on Wednesday night in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, which was sponsored by Five Seasons Republican Women. He told the crowd, without indicating if he will run for office, "It is time for America to have a change in leadership." Mr. Scott avoided the podium the entire time he spoke. Instead, he chose to circle the audience, "like a Southern preacher," as he laced his address with allusions to religion. He attacked Democrats and ended on a more positive note as he addressed the audience. He replied, "Our government constantly tells us that we are bad." "There are radical leftists who want us to question a person's appearance at first glance, but the reality is that our union gets better with each passing generation." The formation of the exploratory committee marks the beginning of Mr. Scott's all-but-declared presidential candidature, which was originally reported by The Post and Courier of Charleston, South Carolina. The senator will be able to raise money directly for a 2024 campaign and gain greater national attention before making a formal declaration about his candidature by forming an exploratory committee. He would enter the GOP primary with almost $21.8 million on hand in his Senate account. This weekend, he'll host a donor retreat in Charleston where he'll likely give a status report to his most important backers. If Mr. Scott makes his candidature official, allies have already organised a super PAC that is anticipated to be in Mr. Scott's corner. The PAC said last week that it was growing by bringing on two seasoned political operators from South Carolina, Matt Moore and Mark Knoop. The audience in Cedar Rapids, which consisted of 50 to 75 people in a small space, was receptive to his message. Scott has our best interests at heart, according to Maureen Pickford, 68, a resident of Cedar Rapids who said she would support a Scott run. Verna Dodson, an 80-year-old native of Cedar Rapids, seemed to concur with this evaluation of his character and related it to his lowly upbringing. He had a good example of an upbringing that taught him to value what he had and put in effort, according to Ms. Dodson. "That improved him as a person." Following his visit to Iowa, Mr. Scott will travel to New Hampshire on Thursday and then spend Friday in South Carolina. He is anticipated to make a strong point of his only-in-America ascent, a narrative he first shared on a public platform at the 2020 Republican National Convention. In one lifetime, our family made the transition from cotton to Congress, Mr. Scott remarked. "And for that reason, I think the next century in America can be better than the last." His selection to deliver the Republican rebuttal to President Biden's first joint address to Congress in 2021 greatly aided Mr. Scott's internet fundraising efforts. According to him, people will identify most with that personal tale, he told Fox News on Wednesday. When asked if that would be sufficient to defeat former President Donald J. Trump, who continues to hold a commanding lead in the Republican primary, Mr. Scott quickly shifted to condemnation of the country's Democrats. The field of play is centred on President Biden's shortcomings, he claimed, later adding, "I think we give the voters a choice so that they can decide how we move ahead as opposed to trying to have a discourse about how to be a Republican. I believe it would be better for us to discuss defeating Joe Biden. Although Mr. Scott's advisors have rejected that as the goal, his biography, oratory abilities, and popularity as the highest-ranking Black Republican in Congress have placed him on several Republican short lists to serve as a prospective vice president. If and when Mr. Scott declares his candidature, he will join former governor and UN ambassador Nikki Haley as the second South Carolina Republican to run for president in 2024. Asa Hutchinson of Arkansas, the former president of the United States Donald J. Trump, and the software entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy have all started their presidential primary campaigns. In the upcoming months, Florida's Governor Ron DeSantis is anticipated to enter the race. Read the full article

Ally: Lexxia Mare, Scholar of the Ashen Wastes
The sage put down her scepter, and spoke with a sympathy unfelt in her expression.  “I’m sorry, it appears you and your companions have appeared at an inauspicious time, the dust-storms last for weeks this time of year, and afterwords the saltskitters will be out claiming new territory along the dunes..”
“ What is this place? “ Asked Rhorgar
“ Who are you?” queried Verna
“ Where in the nine hells are we?!” Demanded Ogierd, which drew the stranger’s reproachful glare.
“Not so far as that, I assure you.. but much farther than any of you have likely been before. Come, we will shelter in the lower catacombs away from the howling wind, and I will answer any question you may have. Questions are why I found myself in this ruin in the first place, and I have uncovered a few answers to share in my hermitage.”
-A journey beyond the horizon: a tale of the Patrisford five
Setup: Though it features prominently in the mysticism of nearly all cultures, few pay much attention to the moon, far as it is beyond the reach of mortals and too constant in its cycles to never warrant scrutiny. Scraps of lore speak of divine palaces on the outskirts of the firmament and while some scholars see the truth of these tales, most other consider them little better than the fairy-stories hinting at the existence of foggy gardens and pearlesant seas.
Lexxia Mare was one of these scholars, a deacon of a dogmatic faith who’s patron had long since ceased his visitations to the mortal world. Dissatisfied with endless postulation on the abstract nature of their absent benefactor and the vagaries of his last commandments, the deacon decided to seek a means to meet with the god on her own terms. Seeking out a relic from the founding of the faith said to have come from the god’s own halls, Lexxia used her substantial power to teleport herself back to the relic’s origin, finding herself in a deserted ruin where the world of her birth hung in the sky like a glistening jewel.
While it might have once been the realm of palaces and pearl gardens hinted at by the stories, Lexxia found the moon to be a far cry from that splendor: an endless, ruin dotted wasteland filled with nothing but glistening silver-white sand and the windcarved canyons. Here she spent several years in isolation, combing through the wastes for clues to a forgotten past and meditating on the foundations of her faith.  Though her hermitage has led her no closer to her god, it has greatly increased her wisdom and occacular powers, and should the party seek a guide to the cosmos, they could ask for none better.
Adventure Hooks:
A teleportation mishap under an open sky leads to the party being deposited into the wastes or a lunar ruin. Disoriented and preyed upon by strange beasts of the wasteland, they are saved from their predicament by Mare, who offers them her own hermitage as a place to retreat and recover their strength.
Lunar ravagers are towering fey raiders who live in floating fortresses among the clouds and descend to hunt dangerous prey by the light of full moon. Though they are rare and secretive on the planet below, they maintain a constant presence above the lunar surface, able to utilize their full abilities whenever they wish and finding no end of game among the dangerous scavengers of the palace-moon.  Those abducted by the fey as slaves may end up escaping to the silvery wastes below, or may be freed by Lexxia when she comes to parlay with yet another ravager fortress infringing on her territory.
There are more ruins across and beneath the lunar sands for Lexxia to ever explore herself, and any one may hold the secret to what happened to exile the gods from their luminescent perch. A properly equipped party may have many adventures ahead of them in the wastes, each one enriching them with treasure and whatever answers the lunar sage can supply in trade.

Sleeping Beauty Spring: "Sleeping Beauty" (1959 Disney animated film)
Tumblr media
In contemporary American popular culture, this lavish animated feature defines the story of Sleeping Beauty. Countless children have grown up with this version of the tale, not just through the film itself, but through dolls, picture books, Halloween costumes, t-shirts, accessories, and visits to the pop culture icon that is Disneyland's Sleeping Beauty Castle. Yet as an adaptation of of the fairy tale, it plays particularly fast and loose with the original plot. But the liberties it takes work to its advantage. Disney infuses the tale with emotion, conflict, and action that more strictly faithful adaptations lack, but which suit the art form of cinema.
The film's first and foremost departure from the classic tale is to flesh out and humanize the fairies, rather than portraying them as just ethereal agents of fate. The three good fairies, Flora (voice of Verna Felton), Fauna (Barbara Jo Allen), and Merryweather (Barbara Luddy), are small elderly ladies, each with her own distinct, endearing personality. In sharp, powerful contrast to their goodness and warmth stands Maleficent (Eleanor Audley) – not the mere angry fairy of tradition, but a majestic dark sorceress, the self-proclaimed "mistress of all evil," and one of Disney's most iconic villains. Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather are the true protagonists of this film, as the story is rewritten to revolve around their efforts to save Princess Aurora (voiced by the golden-toned operatic soprano Mary Costa) from Maleficent's evil magic.
After Merryweather softens Maleficent's curse on Aurora from death to sleep, the three good fairies take further steps to try to prevent the curse from coming to pass at all. In another drastic departure from the traditional tale, King Stefan and his queen entrust their baby daughter to the fairies, who disguise themselves as peasant women and raise her as their foster child in the forest, changing her name to "Briar Rose." (Thus her name from the Grimms' version of the tale and her name from Tchaikovsky's ballet both get their due.) They plan to take her back to the castle at sunset on her sixteenth birthday, when the curse will end, to reunite with her parents and to marry her betrothed, Prince Phillip (Bill Shirley).
Sixteen years later, in the forest, Briar Rose and Prince Phillip meet by chance and fall in love, neither knowing the other's identity. Afterwards, Briar Rose is distraught to learn her own royal identity and betrothal, because it means leaving her "peasant boy" behind. When the fairies take her back to the castle, they allow the sad princess a few moments alone. Unfortunately, Maleficent seizes the chance to hypnotize Aurora and leads her up to a tower where a spinning wheel waits.
As the fairies put the whole royal court to sleep along with Aurora, they learn that the young man she met in the forest was, in fact, Prince Phillip. But Maleficent captures and imprisons the prince to prevent him from waking Aurora with true love's kiss. This leads to what may be the most dramatic change from the traditional story: Aurora and the court's enchanted sleep doesn't last for a hundred years, but just one night, the length of time it takes for the fairies to help Prince Phillip escape from Maleficent's dungeon and reach King Stefan's castle. After Phillip chops through the forest of thorns Maleficent creates to bar his way, Maleficent transforms herself into a fire-breathing dragon, and an epic battle takes place. In the end, of course, the dragon is slain, and Phillip's kiss wakes Aurora, who finally meets her parents and takes her place as princess by her prince's side, while the good fairies happily look on.
Walt Disney set out to make Sleeping Beauty his greatest animated feature thus far, and its visual spectacle and elegance have rarely been equalled before or since. With artist Eyvind Earl as the animation's chief stylist, the entire picture has the look of a rich medieval tapestry, combined with with sleek traces of 1950s modern art too, and the film's widescreen Super Technirama 70 format gives it an epic dimension far different from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs or Cinderella. The visual beauty is enhanced by the classical-flavored musical score by George Bruns, based on motifs from Tchaikovsky's ballet – of the few songs sung by the characters, the standout is the main love theme, "Once Upon a Dream," based on Tchaikovsky's famous Garland Waltz. Some critics might find the whole atmosphere too sophisticated and serious compared to other, livelier films in Disney's animated canon. But the excellent voice cast brings their roles to life, and the film's focus on Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather adds warmth, lightness, and gentle humor to balance out the medieval elegance.
While I can't say if Walt Disney succeeded or not in making Sleeping Beauty greater than all his earlier animated features, it's most definitely one of the crown jewels of the Disney animated canon. And while it's not the most faithful retelling of the classic fairy tale, its sheer artistic quality as a film is hard for any other version to equal.

King of Wallachia and Bulgaria
Johannizza, the King of Wallachia and Bulgaria, who had sojourned long in Roumania, and wasted the country during the whole of Lent, and for a good while after Easter (and April 1206), now retired towards Adrianople and Demotica, and had it in mind to deal with those cities as he had dealt with the other cities of the land. And when the Greeks who were with him saw that he turned towards Adrianople, they began to steal away, both by day and by night, some twenty, thirty, forty, a hundred, at a time.
When he came to Adrianople, he required of those that were within that they should let him enter, as he had entered elsewhere. But they said they would not, and spoke thus: “ Sire, when we surrendered to thee, and rebelled against the ranks, thou didst swear to protect us in all good faith, and o keep us in safety. Thou hast not done so, but hast utterly uined Roumania; and we know full well that thou wilt do into us as thou hast done unto others.” And when Johanlizza heard this, he laid siege to Demotica, and erected round 11 sixteen large petraries, and began to construct engines of wery kind for the siege, and to waste all the country round.
Then did those in Adrianople and Demotica take mesa engers, and send them to Constantinople, to Henry, the legent of the empire, and to Vernas, and prayed them, for jod’s sake, to rescue Demotica, which was being besieged. And when those at Constantinople heard these tidings, they lecided to succour Demotica. But some there were who did lot dare to advise that our people should issue from Con- .tantinople, and so place in jeopardy the few Christian folk hat remained. Nevertheless, in the end, as you have heard, t was decided to issue forth, and move on Salymbria.
The cardinal, who was there as legate on the part of the Pope of Rome, preached thereon to the people, and promised i full indulgence to all such as should go forth, and lose their ives on the way. So Henry issued from Constantinople vith as many men as he could collect, and marched to the  of Salymbria; and he encamped before the city for full light days. And from day to day came messengers from Adrianople praying him to have mercy upon them, and come to their relief, for if he did not come to their relief, they were out lost. . , V
THE CRUSADERS MARCH TO THE RELIEF OF DEMOTICA
Then did Henry take council with his barons, and their decision was that they would go to the city of Bizye, which was a fair city, and strong. So they did as they had devised, and came to Bizye, and encamped before the city on the eve of the feast of our Lord St. John the Baptist, in June (23rd June 1206). And on the day that they so encamped came messengers from Adrianople, and said to Henry, the brother of the Emperor Baldwin: “ Sire, be it known to thee that if thou dost not relieve the city of Demotica, it cannot hold out more than eight days, for Johannizza’s petraries have breached the walls in four places, and his men have twice got on to the walls.”
Then he asked for counsel as to what he should do. Many were the words spoken, to and fro; but in the end they said: “ Lord, we have come so far that we shall be for ever shamed if we do not succour Demotion. L&t.every man now confess and receive the communion; and then let us set our forces in array .” And it was reckoned that they had with them about four hundred knights, and of a certainty no more. So they summoned the messengers who had come from Adrianople, and asked them how matters stood, and what number of men Johannizza had with him. And the messengers answered that he had with him at least forty thousand men-at-arms, not reckoning those on foot, of whom they had no count guided istanbul tour.
Ah God! what a perilous battle so few against so many I In the morning, on the day of the feast of our Lord St. John the Baptist, all confessed and received the communion, and on the following day they marched forward. The van was commanded by Geoffry, the Marshal of Roumania and Champagne, and with him was Macaire of Sainte-Menehould. The second division was under Conon of Bethune and Miles the Brabant; the third under Payen of Orleans and Peter of Bracieux; the fourth was under Anseau of Cayeux; the fifth under Baldwin of Beauvoir; the sixth under Hugh of Beaumetz; the seventh under Henry, brother of the Emperor Baldwin; the eighth, with the Flemings, under Walter of Escomai; Thierri of Loos, who was seneschal, commanded the rear-guard.
So they, rode for three days, all in order; nor did any host ever advance seeking battle so perilously. For they were in peril on two accounts; first because they were so few, and those they were about to attack so many; and secondly, because they did not believe the Greeks, with whom they had just made peace, would help them heartily. For they stood in fear lest, when need arose, the Greeks would go over to Johannizza, who, as you have already heard, had been so near to taking Demotica.

Chapter 13: Lesser Celandine Means ‘Joys to Come’
The nine-year-old bounded out before Alex and Thomas through the botanical garden. They had been living together for about three years already and life was treating them right.
Both still worked for Washington, they still argued about small stuff – which they claimed were discussions in good faith and their friends called bickering like a married couple – and Philip was doing well in school.
They had fallen into a routine together that the versions of themselves from five years ago could have never pictured. As much as they started as jagged edges running along each other, they now found themselves puzzle pieces fitting together.
It was early May and one of the first few beautiful days of the month after a lot of rain, so the three had decided to go to the botanical garden nearby.
However, Alex didn’t know that Thomas and Philip were in on a plot together, a plot to do with a little box in Thomas’s pocket.
Philip pointed at a cactus and yelled: “Look, it got spikes!”
“I can see that, kiddo,” Thomas called out to him, “Can it flower?”
After reading the little sign for a moment, Philip pouted and yelled back: “No.”
“That’s a pity,” Thomas said, then called out: “This one here had beautiful peach colored flowers, if you want to see.”
“That’s not peach,” Alex butted in.
“Yes, it is,” Thomas retorted.
“No, it’s obviously orange.”
“What do you think orange looks like?” Thomas sounded more distressed than anything.
If Alex looked again, he could see that it was indeed peach and the lighting had made it appear more orange than it actually was, but now he had taken a stance. So, he said: “Kind of like that, though I will give you that it’s light orange.”
“Peach is pastel orange, you know that right?” Thomas said.
“So, then I’m right and it’s orange,” Alex shrugged.
“No, because there are many shades of orange and this particular one is peach,” Thomas sounded frustrated.
“I don’t know, Tom,” Alex made a great show of observing the peach colored flower, “If I look at it now, it looks more like apricot.”
“Peach is the lighter and pastel version apricot,” Thomas exclaimed, “The difference is literally super small, but I know my colors and this is lighter than apricot, okay. It’s peach.”
Alex grinned at him and the realization dawned, Thomas tiredly stated: “You’re just doing this to fuck with me.”
“You know me so well,” Alex smirked.
From between them, Philip spoke up: “I think it looks pretty.”
“It does,” Alex agreed, before reading the signs and saying: “Oeh, there’s a butterfly greenhouse, we should go.”
Thomas took Philip’s hand and offered Alex his arm: “Lead the way, darlin’.”
In the butterfly greenhouse they marveled at the butterflies fluttering around. Alex looked mostly up, but Thomas and Philip made sure to read each sign, since they had agreed on a certainflower for it to happen.
When they walked past a particular patch of flowers, Thomas got distracted by Alex, who gasped when a butterfly landed on his face. He grinned at Thomas, who snapped a picture. Then Philip elbowed him in the side and pointed at a sign.
They found it.
Philip quietly retreated to the background with the camera, while Thomas squatted and pretended to read the little sign.
He hummed and read: “Lesser Celandine, or Ficaria verna. Classified as a noxious weed, since it flowers before much of the native fauna, establishing dominance over native species.”
Alex stopped looking up and inspected the small yellow flowers. He hummed: “Interesting, what made that flower catch you eye?”
“Well,” Thomas said, here it was, “I happen to know their meaning.”
“Is that so?” Alex asked, suspicion creeping into his voice.
“Yes, they mean ‘joys to come’,” Thomas shifted and reached into his pocket, “And I was wondering if you would want to explore all of the joys in the world with me.”
Gasping Alex looked at him with wide eyes, completely speechless.
“We’ve been through so much together,” Thomas went on, “You gave me so much more than I’d ever thought I’d have. So, Alexander, will you marry me?”
Alex didn’t care that he looked like the ultimate gay stereotype as he fanned his hands in excitement, tears in his eyes as he nodded and chocked out: “Yes!”
Thomas grinned and took out the ring to slip on Alex’s finger. Philip ran up behind him, camera still in hand as he threw his arms around Thomas’s neck, still at the perfect height from where he was knelt and babbled: “You said yes, right, Papa? You and Da are getting married!”
“I did, Pip,” Alex grinned, admiring the simple band with purple stone, “And I suppose you were in on it, little rascal.”
“Of course,” Philip smiled toothily as Thomas stood up, lifting Philip in a piggy back, “Da had to ask someone for your hand.”
“You asked Pip for permission?” Alex laughed.
Thomas shrugged: “Seemed the best option. I felt like he should get a say.”
“And I knew who he could trust,” Philip added.
“Oh yeah?” Alex asked, amused.
“Hm-hm,” Philip nodded.
“Yeah,” Thomas agreed, “It was smart to not involve Laf in this, just Eliza.”
“Dork,” Alex rolled his eyes, but he knew Eliza still had his ring size from when he and her went to find rings for his wedding to John.
“But I’m your dork,” Thomas informed him, “And you’ve just agreed to that being permanent, so I feel like that’s more on you than on me.”
“You’re insufferable,” was Alex’s reply, but they all saw he couldn't stop smiling.
“I know,” Thomas agreed, putting Philip down.
Alex pulled him into a kiss, while Pip made slight gagging noises that they both ignored. When they pulled apart, Alex whispered against his lips: “This was perfect, you’re perfect. Thank you.”
“Charmer.”
“God, I can’t wait to tell everyone!” Alex gushed. He had been the one to ask John, so he never got the excitement of sharing, just the stress of asking. The novelty of this new feeling, making him even more excited about it.
Thomas smiled at him, love filled eyes. Alex didn’t even know how beautiful he looked right now, basked in sunlight with butterflies fluttering around him as his eyes sparkled and his smile tried to break his face in two.
He kissed him.
“What was that for?”
“You’re beautiful.”
“Who’s the charmer now?” Alex teased.
“Da, Da, did you show him your ring?” Philip tugged on Thomas’s hand.
“I hope you don’t mind that I got myself one, I just had an idea,” Thomas shrugged, when he saw Alex’s quirked brow.
“I helped pick!” Philip told him proudly.
“Really?”
“Jup,” Thomas confirmed as he showed him the ring. It was identical to Alex’s, except that the stone was green instead of purple. Thomas said: “You know, those few years ago, I thought it was kind of obvious that we wouldn’t like each other, because purple and green are on other sides of the color spectrum, but I had forgotten how well they go together.”
“Only you’d judge people based on their color pallet,” Alex rolled his eyes, but his voice betrayed how touched he was.
“Do you like them?” Philip asked, eyes shining.
“I love them, Pip,” Alex ruffled his hair.
Thomas offered him his arm and that way Alex could look at his own hand, resting on Thomas’s arm with the ring reflecting the light. As they walked through the rest of the garden, Alex missed most of the flowers by being distracted.
That evening they invited their friends for drinks, when they were all sitting around Eliza spoke up, she had been the one involved, so she knew why this was happening: “So, Alex, any reason for the sudden get together?”
Alex grinned at her: “Well, Betsy, there is actually.”
“Is that so?” Eliza smirked.
“Jup, I got some jewelry today,” Alex told her, holding up his hand to show off the ring.
It was quiet for a second, then everyone seemed to make the connection and there was a wall of noise as everyone congratulated them, asked them how or when, as well as demanded to see the rings.
As Laf held their hands to see and compare the rings, he cried: “These are beautiful, but why wasn’t I told.”
“To be fair, I did think about it, but I was warned against it,” Thomas told him.
“Why!” Laf pouted.
“Because you nearly told John, by bursting out in tears when you saw him,” Eliza cut in, “I had to tell him your pet bird back in France died and he looked like him.”
“Oh, so that’s why he gave me a drawing of a bird,” Laf nodded, then moved on, “Anyway, I have grown, I would have been the perfect wingman in this.”
“I think Philip did a great job,” Thomas disagreed, “Right, kiddo?”
“Yeah, I got it on camera,” Philip said proudly, inviting a new round of chaos as everyone demanded to see.
“Ahw, ‘Lexi, you cried,” Angelica cooed, teasingly.
“I didn’t,” Alex huffed.
Herc looked at the video again and said: “Well, man, it kinda looks like you did.”
“Give me that,” Alex studied it, “No, maybe there was a bit of moist happening, but I feel like that’s more all the pollen in the air. We were in a big garden after all.”
“First of, using moist and grossing everyone out isn’t working,” Peggy said, “Second of, you fucking cried, just admit it.”
“I will agree to teary eyed, but no more,” Alex told her.
“Alright, Mr. Teary Eyed Little Baby Man,” Peggy rolled her eyes.
“Now that’s just plain rude,” Alex pouted.
“No,” James said, from where he had gotten a hold of the recording, “that’s truth, I can see it clearly here in this frame.”
“Gimme,” Lafayette snatched it and snapped a picture of it, “We need to start collecting pictures to show at the wedding.”
“Oh no, you’re all going to be terrible,” Alex whined.
“No, we’re going to be helpful,” Laf corrected.
“I somehow doubt that,” Thomas sided with Alex.
In the end they did have to come back on that. Their friends were absolute champions when it came to wedding planning. Though Thomas and Alex mostly made decisions themselves, the others were all there to give second opinions or double check for them.
They had decided on a late spring/ early summer wedding, so it would take a little less than a year, before they actually got married, but wedding planning took time and Alex took great joy in the word fiance.
Thomas did too, he just didn’t want to admit it.
That summer they arrived in Monticello – as had become tradition – however, instead of the usual greetings, they were met with: “Show us the rings.”
“No, hello, how are you, long time no see, what have you been up to. Of course not, why would they ask about us instead of some shiny pieces of metal,” Thomas grumbled playfully as he and Alex were practically passed around by the family.
Alex just grinned and let them, still amazed by the family he had accumulated.
Thomas had been right back then when he had told Alex that with Ma and Mary on their side everyone was bound to like him too, but Alex had still been nervous each time he met one of Thomas’s siblings. A fear he could now hardly imagine with how comfortable he had gotten in his family, a family he would soon be officially part of.
When he got to Ma, she pulled him into a hug: “I’m so happy for the two of you, son.”
And Alex couldn't do anything, but hug back and say: “Me too, Ma, me too.”
The months came and went and soon they were sending out the wedding invitations out. It was plain white paper, with on the back the date and place as well as the instruction to come dressed in white. While the front bore a poem written in cursive:
let us live like flowers
wild and beautiful
and drenched in sun
e.e.
When the day was there, Alex was stressing in the back of the church, while Thomas was waiting in the front. Alex had offered him the position of walking down the aisle, but Thomas had declined claiming it was too much pressure and that he at least knew what to expect if he got to stand.
Thomas was wearing a beautiful tailored magenta suit made by Hercules as he nervously shifted his weight from foot to foot.
The doors at the back of the church opened and first came the groomsmen and the bridesmaids. All decked out in beautiful white with accents in the colors of the bouquet, as well as flowers in their hair.
It began with Eliza and Maria, after them came James and Angelica, Lafayette and Peggy, Randy and Mary with Herc again roped into the position of flower boy, though he was helped by Kitty and Francie.
Once James, Angie, Laf, Randy and Mary had taken their places behind Thomas and Eliza, Maria Herc and Peggy on Alex’s side, the theme for Alex to walk started to play.
He was given away by Jane, who wore an elegant white 50s style dress, while Alex wore a tightly tailored emerald green suit. His hair was braided with flowers in it matching his bouquet of cluster musk rose, Christmas rose, heliotrope and hawthorn.
From the round window the sun illuminated him and Thomas’s breath caught when he saw him walk. There might have been tears, but that was a whole other thing.
Jane gave his hand to Thomas and smiled at him, before going to take her place in the audience with Kitty and Francie and the rest of the Jefferson clan.
Everyone sat and Washington appeared by Alex and Thomas’s side, ready to ordain them. Before he started Philip came down the aisle carrying the rings. He was dressed in an adorable light blue suit and his hair was tied back with a ribbon in the same color.
After he had given the rings to Washington, he stood next to Alex.
Alex had wanted to make him his best man, but since the best man had to sign as witness and Philip was too small for that, he was the ring bearer and Eliza would sign for Alex and James for Thomas, just like both had done before.
Washington started: “We’re here today to witness the union between Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson. Before this is officiated, they will say theirvows.”
“Thomas, when I first saw you I thought you were incredibly handsome and a gigantic asshole. One of my assessments has been proven entirely incorrect. You are one of the most kindhearted souls, I’ve had the pleasure of meeting,” Alex began.
He went on: “To me you are laughter over dinner, jokes in the hallways at works, a shoulder to lean on, a hand to hold like an anchor. You are sparkling eyes with crinkles that paint happiness on your features and a mouth that runs as smart as mine.”
“You know how to argue, but also when to let go,” Alex said, “You keep me on my toes, while knowing I sometimes just need to stand. I claim your arguments are shit and while that can be true, they always make me think and I love that.”
“The way you care for Philip and never asked for more than I could give, made my heart grow so fond of you that I cannot possibly picture a life wherein I do not love you,” he told him, “When I come home and see you there, I feel like I am whole.”
“According to Eliza I can’t force everyone to sit through the hundred pages I had written – even though it’s my wedding – which is rude, so I’ll try to wrap it up,” at that Thomas laughed, he could picture the scenario clearly.
“So, Thomas, you are all the little things that make life great,” Alex said, “No matter what, I want to support you and care for you, because I love you so much that it would hurt if it didn’t feel so right. I love you.”
Both were crying a bit and Alex chocked on the last three words as his hands shook while trying to put the ring on Thomas’s finger.
“Darlin’, you came into my life like a forest fire,” Thomas began, “You burned through all my arguments and notions of the world, like that was what you were meant to do. For a long time I thought you were out of control, but you proved me wrong once again.”
“You see, you’re not a forest fire,” he told Alex, “You’re a bonfire, a hearth in the heart of the home, a central place for family to gather. You make sure to keep the ones you care about warm, to illuminate them and pull them out of the darkness.”
He went on: “I always thought you talked too much, but I now know that for all your words, you know how to listen. Your smile can do as much as your words and you know how far a hug can go. The way you can be so intensely caring for the people you love is breathtaking.”
“I wanted to compare you to a thousand other things, but nothing could fully describe your beauty both within and out, which is incredibly corny, yet completely true,” he chuckled, “Anyway, this is my long winded way of telling you that I love you too.”
Now it was Thomas’s turn to struggle with the ring through the tears while behind them Washington began to speak again: “Alexander Hamilton, do you take Thomas Jefferson to be your lawfully wedded husband, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer,in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish,‘till death do you part?”
“I do.”
“And Thomas Jefferson, do you take Alexander Hamilton to be your lawfully wedded husband, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer,in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish‘till death do you part?”
“I do.”
“Then you may now kiss the groom.”
Neither hesitated to kiss the other lovingly, while beside them the church burst out in cheers and applause.
After they broke apart, they waved at everyone as they walked out of the church, with Philip between them.
Outside they took pictures with everyone, since everyone who had come was decked out in white, the three spots of color stood out all the more.
The time came to do one with the entire family, Alex cried again as both his friends and Thomas’s relatives gathered around them. When he had gotten to America he was all alone and then he had lost part of his family again, but now he was surrounded by almost more people than he could count.
They also took one where Thomas carried Alex bridal style, something Alex and John – being around the same height – had both failed at when they had tried at their wedding. Before Thomas could do it, Alex asked with apprehension: “Are you sure about this?”
“I’ve done this before, it’ll be fine,” Thomas smiled reassuringly, before literally sweeping Alex off his feet. He informed Alex of that fact and got an annoyed look in return, which was beautifully captured and framed by Angelica for on their desks at work.
The Schuyler sister insisted on taking one with Alex, because he was practically their brother anyways.
They took one with the Washingtons and Jane, a picture in which Alex had never felt so short in his entire life.
Herc and Laf, roped Randy and James into taking a picture where they carried the two groomsmen on their shoulders, something that most definitely went almost wrong on multiple occasions.
However, Alex’s favorite picture was the one where he and Thomas held Philip between them and both kissed a cheek, while Philip beamed.
Later he would hang that picture on the mantle between the other two wedding pictures, finally filling the promise that had been in the empty space.
But for now they went to the wedding venue for the reception.
When they were greeting all the guests at the reception, Burr congratulated themwith Theodosia at his side, little Theo had already disappeared with Philip, Kitty and Francie. He shook Alex’s hand: “Congratulations to both of you.”
“What a nice change to see you both here, you were even at the ceremony,” Alex grinned as he also shook Theodosia’s hand. Her smiling and congratulating them both.
“You’re never letting that go, aren’t you?” Burr sighed tiredly.
“Never,” Alex confirmed, “Good to have you.”
“Yeah, yeah,” Burr waved as they disappeared into the crowd.
“What’s the story there?” Thomas asked, leaning in.
“I’ll tell you later,” Alex whispered back, before smiling and greeting the next guests.
Once everyone was there Alex and Thomas got to cut the cake. They had both agreed that neither of them would push cake into the other’s face, which meant that both ended up with cake in their face, naturally.
They mingled until dinner, when it was time for everyone’s speeches.
Thomas’s siblings all had rewritten a song from Thomas’s youth to fit the two of them and preformed it badly, but with a lot of love.
“I don’t know them,” Thomas whispered to Alex when they did that, making Alex laugh.
Jane retold embarrassing childhood from Thomas’s youth while Herc and Peggy had put together a PowerPoint of all Alex’s lowest points college and after.
Highlights included him standing on a table in a bar, tie around his head with a group surrounding him from that time he had attempted a revolution.
There was a picture of him surrounded by empty coffee cups, while he was passed out between them, face covered with sharpie.
Him with a cat on his lap, while he looked very displeased. Herc and Peggy took great joy in explaining why the cat had put that look on Alex’s face.
And it ended with the frozen frame of Alex crying – still claiming misty eyed, Pegs – while Thomas proposed to him, obviously they’d had help from Lafayette, but the Frenchman had an entire speech for them, mostly existing out of ‘I told you so’s.’
Washington had a short heartfelt speech about seeing them grow at work together as well as a few army stories about Alex.
Then Angelica stood up to give a speech: “I have to admit that when Thomas fell onto my couch over fouryears ago proclaiming that he couldn't flirt, I could not have predicted that we would be here now. Naturally I rooted for them, but you have to know that Thomas and Alex could be like water and oil at work, or maybe oil and fire would be a better description.”
A few chuckles from colleagues were heard.
“But here we are and I have seen how much you two have grown together,” Angelica went on, “Did I have to bribe and threaten you both to get that information? Maybe, but I did get to know everything.”
Thomas and Alex laughed at that.
“I remember the little humble beginnings, the tentative flirting, the first dates, the panic, the good times,” Angelica said, “And I knew you both for many years before that, I have seen you both happy and sad. And I am not the poetic one here, but I know what love looks like in your eyes and I can see it on both of your faces.”
She raised her glass: “To the grooms.”
The room echoed.
“From you friend, who is always by your side,” she went on, “To your union.”
“To your union.”
“And the family you have build,” she finished, “May you always be content and satisfied.”
She gave them both a kiss on the cheek and ignored they were all crying before she went back to her seat and Philip got to the front.
With Eliza as hypewoman, he walked in the Schuyler sister’s footsteps with a poem he had written and preformed as a rap:
“My name is Philip, I am poet
I wrote this poem just to show it
And I, can speech fine
You can find family, but you can’t find mine!
I practice French and play kite with my father
I have a Papa, and he’s a great fellow robber
My daddies tying the knot on this day, swank
Un, duex, trois, quatre, cinq!”
Everyone cheered and cooed as he ran into Alex’s arms afterwards and made himself at home on their laps as Eliza said a few words: “Alex is the speech writer between us both while I tell him it can’t be too long, so do not expect essays.”
There were chuckles around the room and Alex rolled his eyes, knowing she added that because she knew he would call her out in his vows, which she had proof read for him many times.
“But I did want to say that you’re a fighter,” she looked at Alex, “You always have been and I can see how much you’ve met your match in Thomas. I’m happy for you both.”
Alex hugged her closely and whispered: “God fucking dammit, Betsy, you’re not allowed to make me cry again on my wedding.”
She whispered back: “Like you weren’t already crying, you big baby.”
“Plausible deniability,” he sniffed.
“We’re filming it,” she smirked, before hugging Thomas as well and patting Philip on his head as she went back to her spot next to Maria.
Lastly, James got up to speak: “I am not a man of many words, so I’m keeping it short,” Thomas smirked and nodded at that, “All the times you annoyed me, Thomas, about what to do, have been worth it to see you so happy again.”
Now it was Thomas’s time to get emotional, hugging James tightly and saying: “I knew you cared,” attempting to tease and obviously failing.
“I know, a shocker,” James pretended it had worked.
After that dinner was served and everyone appreciated the dishes set out. While they ate, the whole room was alight with chatter as people talked, laughed and enjoyed themselves.
When the time came to dance, Thomas lead Alex to the tune of Hozier’s Like Real People Do. It was slightly haunting, but they had picked it, because it fit them so well. The song told the story about the singer recognizing the sadness in his lovers eyes and making them forget, focusing on the now.
As they spun, Thomas looked into Alex’s eyes with that crinkled smile and Alex nearly melted into the floor as he faltered as step.
He unknowingly retaliated, when Thomas picked him up and he beamed down. His braid had loosened slightly and a pluck of hair framed his face, while the lights gave him a halo, causing Thomas to nearly drop him.
Since there wasn’t really a father-daughter dance, Alex danced with Martha Washington, while Thomas danced with Jane. And after that, the two of them danced with Philip, the three of them laughing as they attempted it.
Throughout the night Alex danced with all the Schuyler sisters, Lafayette and Herc, while Thomas was whisked away by his own sister as well as Angelica and Lafayette.
At some point Jane took Alex’s hand and made him dance with her. Once they were on the floor, Alex smiled: “Hey, Ma, enjoying the wedding so far?”
“Immensely, sweetheart,” Jane smiled, patting his cheek, before he spun her.
“You’re an amazing dancer,” he commented.
“I’m spry for my age.”
“What age? You look not a day over thirty,” he grinned.
“Charmer,” she smiled, then said, “But I wanted to properly welcome you to the family. You’ve been a part for a long time, but still, today is a big day.”
She stopped dancing and reached into her purse. Out of it she got an old time watch with a leather arm band. As she handed it to Alex, she said: “When Thomas came out as pan to me, I prepared a wedding gift for all genders, just in case. Martha got my grandmother’s necklace, but this was my late husbands watch.”
“I- I don’t know what to say,” Alex stared at it with big eyes, he’d never had a family item.
“Maybe a thank you,” Jane grinned.
“Yeah, of course, thank you so much,” Alex hugged her, and repeated,“Thank you so much, Ma.”
She patted her cheek when he let go and said: “No problem, you’re one of us now and we don’t let go easily.”
“Wouldn’t have it any other way,” Alex smiled.
They parted ways again when the song was over and Thomas appeared at his side: “What was that about?”
Alex showed his wrist: “She gave me this.”
Thomas looked at it, then smiled sadly: “I remember that. It suits you.”
“You think so?”
“I know so,” Thomas told him, “I also know that Lafayette and Herc are about to do what they’re calling a classic college trick at the chocolate fountain and I need you to either stop them if it’s bad or help them.”
“Oh, definitely helping,” Alex remembered this one, “Grab your phone and film it. We’ll get them back if they ever get married.”
After an eventful night with enough tomfoolery that they were probably permanently banned to ever rent a venue from that company again, they returned home.
Thomas carried Philip to bed, while Alex put away their wedding gifts. When he was done, he joined Thomas’s in Philip’s threshold.
“He’s still so young,” Thomas commented, “But he looks like when I first met him when he sleeps.”
“That’s already so long ago,” Alex hugged Thomas’s arm, leaning heavily on the other man.
“It seems crazy,” Thomas agreed.
Alex hummed, then they stood there in silence, before Alex asked: “Did you have a good day?”
“Of course, I did,” Thomas replied, then after a beat, “Though I am fucking exhausted after this, why did we invite all those people again? I hate talking to people.”
“Because we wanted to actually fill the church,” Alex grinned, “But you’re right, I could sleep for a week.”
“Well, sleeping beauty, you will have to make do to with,” Thomas checked the time, “five whole hours, then we have to catch a plane.”
“Ah, yes,” Alex said, “Paris is waiting.”
“Along with the future.”
“You fucking sap.”
“Excuse you, that’s your fucking forever sap, Mister.”
“Yeah, yeah it is.”
“Who’s the sap now?”
“Oh, shut up,” Alex said, but didn’t protest when Thomas lead him back to their bedroom. They still had a future waiting for them. ‘Till death to them part, after all.

A/N:
Today in I try to write a natural time skip between chapters.
Me describing a scene in a botanical garden with one flower as the end goal along with a whole ass wedding with flowers, is such a struggle lmao, but that’s what I get for making flowers important.
Btw the wedding bouquet means charming (cluster musk rose), relieve my anxiety (Christmas rose), devotion/faithfulness (heliotrope) and hope (hawthorn). Fun fact: I wanted to name this chapter after heliotrope at first, but that felt a bit too cliché.
Also the bit of poetry is from ‘i saw you as a flower’I got the book! It’s so cute and I love it, I’ve never been a poetry person, but I’ve always wanted to be, so here’s to me trying stuff :D
I am never getting married for the sole reason that I do not want to write vows ever again.
Also, the wedding bouquet:
