The most recent episode of Midst provides so much context for Spahr...who he is, why he chose Phineas, his relationship with his adsecla, his relationship with the Trust. I think you're right that this episode was a good sign for his relationship with Phineas. Jonas Spahr enjoyers are feasting tonight!!
HUGE apologies it took literally a week, but my brain has been so ahhhhhh. It's a fantastic episode!
I've been long a believer that Spahr was going to round the corner too, but it's always been a little shakier how Phineas and Spahr's relationship was going to land. But, as I said yeah! This has felt most clear that they both not only want to mend that relationship but that they will be able to do so. This episode has felt like they're both cognizant of the work they have to do and are willing to undertake it, and Phineas has felt that way for a while but Spahr (on account of not having the clarity Phineas has long had) has been taking a minute. But, it's been SO worth that time.
I feel like it's really the first time we get a strong sense of what this relationship looks like, outside of the work structure, from Spahr's perspective. It's always been really clear of what Phineas thought of Spahr outside of the bounds of like being his boss and what Spahr meant to him, but it hasn't been as clear with Spahr about Phineas... because Spahr is allergic to being direct and also there's a general sense that is he on purpose avoiding thinking about it. How sad he sounds when he admits that he changed Phineas for the worse. How protective he gets over him. That oblique but unmistakable unexpressed grief when Costigan says that Phineas is dead!!
It feels to me like Jonas has realized he loves Phineas dearly and, much more importantly, he's realized that this is absolutely not enough! I think that's what makes me really believe that not only will Phineas and Jonas be okay in the end but also that their relationship will mend: it feels as if Jonas has realized that it is not enough that he cares deeply for Phineas, he also needs to continually do better for and by him to stop hurting him. This episode feels like it's underscored that Jonas is willing to do the work for Phineas and to do better for Phineas. He's already done so much work to come a long way from what Costigan modeled for him, and he's had that moment of understanding with Sherman over not wanting your child to live the way you have and wanting better for them.
Keep going, buddy. It's what Phineas needs / will ask of him, and I think Spahr is very much willing to meet that.
