Deercember Day One: European Fallow Deer | Roses and Posies
The European fallow deer (Dama dama), also known as the common fallow or simply fallow, is historically native to Turkey and potentially the Italian Peninsula, Balkan Peninsula, and the island of Rhodes. Prehistorically, the species was native to a wider range of Europe, and has since been reintroduced, as well as introduced to many non-native regions. Prior to the rut, stags strengthen their neck and shoulder muscles—as well as leave communicative markings—by rubbing their antlers against trees, foliage, and even the ground, sometimes coming away with "crowns". European fallow deer are widely agreed to be the closest living relative of Megaloceros giganteus, or the "Irish elk". More information here.

European fallow deer (Dama dama)
Though often associated with Northern Europe, during the last ice age this species was restricted to the Middle East and parts of the Mediterranean region. It wasn’t until the last few thousand years that human groups like the Romans and Normans introduced them all across Europe, and today they’re also found as invasive species in the Americas, Australia, and New Zealand. Their closest relatives are the Persian fallow deer, a sadly endangered species found only in Iran and Israel.

(Oh) Deer, from the Tête d’Or park in Lyon, I think a European fallow deer.
Fact from Wild Life trust : Fallow deer are native to Asia and were introduced into the UK by the Normans around the 11th century. They subsequently escaped from deer parks and were intentionally released into hunting forests. Today, they are widespread and the most common deer in England.

So my hiking route today took me through a deer park with, I kid you not, a 50+ herd of albino/leucistic fallow and (not very) red deer… what are the changes lol
Now I’m imagining poor Vasco in this Where’s Waldo situation, once he gets a grip on himself and goes back to find Machete.
(The expressions in Hound Mode btw were delightful!)
Ah, that must've been quite a sight! It's always such a staggering feeling coming across a big herd of any large animals, at least if you ask me. The fact they were all white just adds to the effect.
I hope Vasco would've fetched Machete and showed him the deer as well. I don't think he's encountered many other albinistic animals, at least in canon. He might've been impressed.
