hi! I hope you're having a lovely day :) feel free to ignore this if you don't want to do more work on tumblr lol, but you seem very knowledgeable about all sorts of historical and touristy things in Portugal, so I figured I'd ask anyway!
I'm going to north Portugal in September on my honeymoon, we're spending 5 days in Porto, then a couple of days near the Douro valley, and then a few days near Manteigas in the Serra da Estrela national park.
me and my husband are both very into museums/art galleries and historic buildings - is there anything in Porto that we absolutely shouldn't miss whilst we're there? is there any particular food we should try? do you have any recommendations for cafes or restaurants to visit?
Hi! Very glad to answer!
Porto is beautiful and I promise you are going to love it, and I admit I'm excited about you going to Serra da Estrela. It's so quiet at that time of the year, all you hear is nature, it's just so peaceful. Also, please try the cheese. Serra da Estrela cheese is a sin, it's so good, and you can go straight to the source there.
In Porto, there is a lot to see, especially if you enjoy museums, monuments and galleries, so I'll list a few things:
Palácio da Bolsa is a must, in my opinion. I believe they have guided tours, if you are interested in that.
Clérigos Church, Hospital and Tower. The view from up there is amazing, but the whole building is rich with history and super interesting, and the church is beautiful.
Porto's Cathedral, which includes the Chapter House and has some amazing artworks inside.
The entire area of the old Borrough of Porto, which is the hill where the Cathedral sits on. That is where the oldest house in Porto is (in Beco dos Redemoinhos, it's about 700 years old), or where the "stairs of the queen" also are, said to have been the stairs taken Countess Teresa on her way to the church that would later become the Cathedral, and the watch tower in front of it.
There are points of interest you might come across as must-sees in Porto but you're better off standing there looking at it cause they're either expensive or they're a McDonalds. The McDonalds building is beautiful, yes. Majestic café is a unique art nouveau building, but it's SO expensive.
On that note, Lello. Lello is interesting and super beautiful, I am not one to discourage people from visiting it. But expect a long line. (it's right next to Clérigos and you can see it from there...). However, you can buy the tickets online (I think they're 5€) and that allows you to skip the line, and if you buy a book, the price of the ticket is deducted from your purchase.
For museums, Soares dos Reis has a lot of art, from painting to sculpture to decorative arts, and it's rich with some of the most important portuguese artists, focused mostly on the circle of Porto, especially from the 19th century.
Porto is known ofr being a vast sea of blue and white tiles. You don't have to look for them, you will just find them. However, Capelinha das Almas and Church of Santo Ildefonso are a good example (Ildefonso stares at Clérigos directly... they were once rivals).
And on THAT note... São Bento Train Station. It is worth it just standing there admiring the architecture and the tiles (keep in mind a lot of these things are stuff you can just include on a long walk)
Some streets... Rua das Flores, or famously Rua de Santa Catarina (where you'll find Majestic and Capelinha das Almas) they're all just very nice walks. Same for Ribeira (the riverside). No plans, just a walk while enjoying the view.
If you are interested in Contemporary Art, Fundação Serralves. At the very least, the gardens are wonderful and they're just a great place to rest and enjoy the afternoon (I think they have cafés there too, but I haven't been there in years, now).
Go on a Douro Valley tour. I cannot emphasise how great these are. You get to visit a handful of cellars, try several wines and enjoy a ride across the Douro. In Porto itself, they also have boat rides across the Douro, some might have wine, I'm not sure, but I find it so much more enriching to do a Douro Valley tour and be able to visit the cellars.
As for food and where to eat, I am not going to give you any restaurant names because I KNOW I have people from Porto who follow me and they can answer that better than I can, but there's 2 things I usually tell people to try in Porto.
One, of course, is Francesinha. It's going to feel like it's a lot. I call it a tower of bread with fibre for days. But try it, because nowhere else in Portugal can they make them as well as they make them in Porto. Besides it's one of the most important hallmarks of Porto culture, and I find that it's a fundamental experience in your journey to try Francesinha. It's like going to Valencia and trying Paella, you just HAVE to.
The other one is a personal opinion and choice of mine because, well, Portugal is known for codfish dishes and my all time favourite codfish dish was born in Porto and it's Bacalhau à Gomes Sá. If I'm not mistaken, it was born on a restaurant that was nearby Ribeira, somewhere in that area, and they actually put up a goddamn plaque celebrating this
Tumblr media
Ribeira is the easiest place to find this dish, but it's going to be above average in price (I can guarantee you someone will come into this post to scream that it's a complete theft how expensive it is, but we're just poor and cheapskates, and the restaurants aren't bad. Again, they're going to be above average but not all are ridiculously overprices).
On a final note, if you're interested in doing a walk tour of Porto, there are several companies that do so, but I happen to know a guide who is currently living and working in Porto and I can ask her availability and you guys can agree on something if you're interested. Just let me know!
I hope you have an amazing time!!!!
Anything else, let me know!!

I've come here to announce Portugal will have their first Figure Skating National championships!!!
Of course it was Serra da Estrela the place chosen (because the winter sports federation supported it and Turismo de Portugal (Portuguese turism) did not), but oh boy did I laugh at the rink size XD
It's a temporary rink built at 1500 meters of altitude and it's only opened from October to April (I'm guessing this is will be an anual thing). Apparently the space will be occupied with other stuff during the off-season because well, even if Serra da Estrela is one of the places where it snows the most in Portugal, the snow still melts on the summer.
I actually liked the skaters they showed in the video. They barely have any space to gain speed, but they seem enjoyable to watch, I'll try to find more information on the championships.
Proud of my country for once (although I'm still looking at you, Turismo de Portugal -_-)

Portugal Day Five: Lisbon
Since I'd had a relatively early night and wanted to make the most of the daylight on my final day in Portugal I set my alarm early and lucky I did or I would've been waiting hours for a bathroom to become free for me! I waited in the kitchen for the breakfast to be served and made a pot of French press coffee while I waited and chatted to an Australian girl also up early. Eventually the morning receptionist arrived in a bit of a grump and I was the guinea pig for her first serving of French toast which was only half cooked. When the others had been served I asked if I could have a pancake and she whipped me up one to replace the raw French toast. I set off for the day (after initially leaving and then returning promptly to get my sunglasses!) and walked up the Galeria De Arte Urbana - essentially an open air graffiti art gallery towards the upper area of Lisbon, Bairro Alto. I watched the trams as they travelled up and down the narrow street in amazement at the angle of the track because it was such a steep gradient. At the top I found a kind of main square with a small Christmas market and some really nice views over the city below, unfortunately there was a fence right around the square so I couldn't take any clear photos! I kept walking down the main road and found another small market lining a park as well as some stylish colorful buildings on the other side of the road. I briefly browsed the market which had a few cool things but it was mostly expensive artistic stuff. At last I had arrived at my destination - Copenhagen Coffee Lab. I ordered my flat white and took the last available table by the wall to enjoy it and plan my day on my map. I had arrived just 20 minutes after opening but it was already packed with customers, despite the fact they have banned laptops. I walked through Jasmin Park, which appeared to be having some kind of antiques/flea market, and emerged outside the Basílica da Estrela. After just a few photos I decided to begin my huge walk and mapped my first stop - the Necessidades Palace where I stopped in the sun for a snack and drink. I got a few photos of the iconic bridge Ponte 25 de Abril but I wasn't really up high enough for a good view and there were so many cranes ruining the skyline! I kept on walking all the way to the LX Factory which was more than worth the hour total walk there! It really was the highlight of Lisbon; made up of cool street art and unique concept stores it easily kept me busy looking around for a few hours. It was very quiet out there too so I think it's a little bit lesser known, in one of the concept stores I was the only customer to four employees who were all pitching me things that they wanted me to buy. One lady in particular just followed me around the whole shop and commented on anything my eyes hovered on to try and get me to buy it! I decided to get my lunch inside the factory at an Argentinian grill place called el Chanta, I chose a chicken burger and sweet potato fries with an ice tea. I mapped out my route back into the city centre and decided I'd take the tram which conveniently pulled up right as I arrived at the stop so I simply hopped aboard with everyone else. I kind of knew in the back of my mind I probably didn't have enough change for the ticket but I thought I'd slowly try to buy one anyway so I made my way to the back carriage and put all my small change into the ticket machine after the initial struggle to switch the language and select the ticket type. Eventually all my coins ran out when I was three stops down the road and about 70c short of the fare so I ejected the money and then got off at the next stop which ended up being in the middle of nowhere. I climbed up a long steep staircase to a cafe that was the only place open and asked them to change my €5 into coins then I headed back down to wait for the next tram which wound up driving right past me as it was too full. I walked the next two stops and ended up at the TimeOut food market which was actually really cool and reminded me of the one in Florence. It was jam packed with people and the prices were on the high side for Portugal so I was glad I'd already had my lunch! Abandoning the tram idea as the second one passed I climbed uphill to a lookout plateau Miradouro de Santa Catarina where a crowd had gathered to watch a guitarist and saxophonist playing a duet in front of the scenic view of the bridge skyline. I sat for a few minutes to watch too but it was a bit too jazzy and couple-y for my liking! Since I was in the area I thought I'd drop in and check out the Park Bar. An infamous bar on the top level of a parking building that's apparently very hard to find. Google Maps couldn't show me an exact pin drop just a general area so I needed to do my exploring to find it. I walked the street suggested by Google and found a parking building with a pedestrian entrance, as soon as I was inside I saw an elevator so I took it to the highest level - 5. On 5 I was a bit surprised to find just a car park! I looked around a bit and found a staircase leading up to level 6 and voilà there it was! I ordered a cider at the bar and sat on the terrace to enjoy it looking over Lisbon with the sun high in the sky. My last stop before going back to the hostel to rest my weary feet was the Pink Street as it was nearby - it was just a road that had been painted entirely pink. Not that exciting and I had the impression that at night it would become an area full of undesirables. I messaged a lady I'd met in Naples a few months ago, Martha, as she was also in Lisbon now and we met up in the evening for a walk together to the Wonderland Lisboa because I'd raved about it and she wanted to see it too. We bought a cider each and had a look in the stalls and chatted about life and travel and 2018 goals. Then we ended the market with a fatura and walked back to our hostels for the last night in Lisbon.

Bookish Questions!
I was tagged 15 years ago by my saltmate and partner in crime @allmyfuckingobsessions. Gracias, guapa <3
1. Which book has been on your shelves the longest?
I have no clue, tbh. If we are talking about the books I have here with me right now, I’d say “The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes” by ACD. It’s a beautiful edition!
2. What is your current read, your last read and the book you’ll read next?
Current read:  “Pájaros en la boca” by Samanta Schweblin An outstanding collection of short stories. I love short stories! You can feel the Cortázar ~vibes~ and Magical realism while you read her book *heart eyes* If you don’t know a thing about Magical realism...What the hell are you waiting for? ;)
Last read: “Brave New World” by Aldous Huxley.
Next Read: “Ensaio Sobre a Cegueira” by José Saramago and planning to reread “A Handmaid’s Tale” by Margaret Atwood.
3.  Which book does everyone like and you hated?
First thing that comes to my mind: Percy Jackson series.
 4. Which book do you keep telling yourself you’ll read, but you probably won’t?
Pffffff. It’s a never ending list. Not copying Carmen’s answer but “Anna Karenina” is on my list too. “War and Peace”, also by Liev Tolstói. Dante Alighieri’s “The Divine Comedy” is another example (…) Anyways, I plan on reading all of them someday lmao.
5. Which books are you saving for “retirement?”
None, I guess.
 6. Last page: read it first or wait till the end?
Well, nowadays I wait. Don’t want to spoil the ending.
7. Acknowledgements: waste of ink and paper or interesting aside?
Interesting! It always catches my attention.
 8. Which book character would you switch places with?
Not an easy question to answer… Oh boy, I usually read a lot of dramatic stuff and the characters suffer so much. Right now, I’m looking at my shelf and first book I see is: Wuthering Heights…I loooooove WH, but I’d NEVER switch places with Cathy (1 OR 2 lmao). Thank you very much. I’d rather watch Transformers 5 times and I can’t stand Transformers haha. Okay, I’m gonna say something cliché af but I’d choose some random person studying at Hogwarts. I’d give everything to go to Hogwarts (cause yes, it’s real) but I don’t want Harry Potter’s bullshit. I want to be someone really chill, living my Hogwarts life and maybe have a cup of tea with my pal, Hagrid.
9. Do you have a book that reminds you of something specific in your life (a person, a place, a time)?
Putting some memories aside, I’d say any book written by Pedro Bandeira. He’s a Brazilian writer and he mainly writes for kids and teens (I think?). So, his books remind me of my childhood up to my preteen years.
 10. Name a book you acquired in some interesting way.
George R. R Martin’s “Dance of the Dragons”. Some years ago, I won a contest on Facebook. I had to answer a question about the importance of fantasy or something like that. They liked my answer, I won the prize and now I can’t barely remember the question lmao. I’m getting old.
11. Have you ever given away a book for a special reason to a special person?
Several times! I love to do that. I think the latest was a poetry book by Fernando Pessoa or “A Hora da Estrela” by Clarice Lispector.
12.   Which book has been with you to the most places?
Hmm. “American Gods” by Neil Gaiman or “Venus in Furs” by Leopold von Sacher-Masoch.
13.   Any “required reading” you hated in high school that wasn’t so bad ten years later?
Yes. “Memórias de um Sargento de Milícias” by Manuel Antônio de Almeida. Still hate you tho, José de Alencar.
14.   What is the strangest item you’ve ever found in a book?
A straw!
 15.   Used or brand new?
Both. I love both. I’m a poor student, books in Brazil are expensive af, so used books comes in handy and I have nothing against buying/collecting them. They also need a home, amirite?
 16.   Stephen King: Literary genius or opiate of the masses?
Genius! (if you’re reading this and like to read King, pls, try “Different Seasons”. No one talks about that book and it’s an amazing collection of novellas).
17.   Have you ever seen a movie you liked better than the book? Yep. Unlikely to happen, but tbh one comes to my mind right now…“The Reader” by Bernhard Schlink. Probably because I had a lot of expectations, but Stephen Daldry’s film adaptation is a waaaay better imo.
 18.   Conversely, which book should NEVER have been introduced to celluloid?
Hmm….Maybe “Wuthering Heights” by Emily Brontë, I think. I have watched the 1992 film adaptation and the BBC version with Tom Hardy <3  But I feel like no film based on Wuthering Heights will ever be Wuthering Heights. It’s almost impossible to capture all that intensity (and drama) lmao
19.   Have you ever read a book that’s made you hungry, cookbooks being excluded from this question?
Lord of the Rings cause of Lembas, I remember it’s a type of bread (kinda?) made by the Elves. Butterbeer too, of fucking course (from Harry Potter for those who don’t know ;)
20.   Who is the person whose book advice you’ll always take?
I have a friend, Fabrício, and we are always talking about books. We try to recommend things to each other. It’s nice.
Carmen is another person I like to talk about books. It’s not a planned thing, tho, sometimes we are chatting and one thing leads to another… But, tbh, I enjoy talking about literature with people who like to read. That’s it. Of course people have different interests and it’s unlikely to see me reading or having interest to read Paulo Coelho’s books, for example. It’s just a genre that I’m not so interested in reading. However, I don’t mind if a person comes to tell me about this or that book they’ve just read…It’s totally fine!
I’m tagging two lovely girls @lokisvillainy and @madissilver. No pressure!!

Explore the Hidden Gem of Lisbon
The second oldest capital city of Europe is Lisbon. A city tour of Lisbon showcases the attractive sights and sounds of the Portuguese city. Lisbon was once a home to the world’s greatest explorers like Magellan, Vasco Da Gama and Prince Henry. Lisbon is blessed with many beautiful sandy beaches ranging from dune backed sands to little sheltered is coves. Lisbon is a great for a weekend escape. It’s a multicultural, passionate, multifaceted city. It conquers you with its mix of modern and old fashion.
With its world class restaurants, style and rich history in art and culture, Portugal’s city remains high on every traveller’s hit list. Whether you’re just here for a short visit or thinking of sticking around a little longer this checklist will help you find the very best thing. Sticking around a little longer you will find the most important landmarks, get a taste of some traditional Portuguese food and uncover hidden gems in the coolest neighbourhood around the city.
Discover the things to do during your visit here to get into the heart of what makes Lisbon so wonderful.
Find a bakery: Lisbon will certainly become a favourite destination for visitors with a sweet tooth, right from the famous Pasteis de Nata in Belem to tartes de maca to travesseiros in nearby Sintra. Lisbon is a city in to indulge your senses.
Ride Tram 28: Like San Francisco in the United States, Lisbon is a city famed for its historic, rattling tram lines. Tram 28 has been working its way up the steep, cobbled roads and into the old Alfama district for decades. The journey start from below the palm spotted hills of Graca and weaves towards the hair pin alleys of Escolas Gerais before pulling up to a halt beneath the gorgeous domes of the Estrela Basilica.
Lisbon is one of the European cities located so close to the stunning seafront. From its miles of dune backed sands to sheltered coves, Lisbon is a home to numerous beautiful sandy beaches along the coast of the Atlantic Ocean. It is a paradise for beach lovers.
The vibrant nightlife: In Lisbon sunset does not mean the end of the day. The day has just started for the locals, especially on the weekends and during the summer holidays from hidden bars to clubs, cellar to beautiful rooftop bars to fancy cocktail places. There is definitely something for everyone. Bairro Alto is the liveliest district in Central Lisbon for its nightlife. It is well known for its vibrant bars and quirky pubs. People tend to spill out of the different bars and drink together on the narrow winding cobbled streets. It is common with students, so the prices of drinks are highly competitive.
Perfect place for foodies: Lisbon has several restaurants to offer with the Portuguese food being delicious and diverse. You will find a hatful of street food option and local restaurants. Lisbon being renowned for its seafood, you will find some of the best cafes and restaurants along with varied award winning fish dishes. It is a good place to start your day when Lisbon is the O Arrastao. But if you want try authentic food, a trip to Taberna is a must.
Go treasures hunting at Feira da ladra: For a very local experience go treasure hunting at Feira da Ladra, Lisbon’s most famous flea market. Every Tuesday and Saturday here you will find hundreds of stalls selling literally anything.
Boat tour along Tagus: speaking of sunset one of the most romantic things to do in Lisbon is going on a sail boat tour along the Tagus and actually enjoy the sunset views from there while sipping a glass of champagne or an icy cold beer.
Lisbon is famous for open air museum because of its fascinating street art. There is street art tour that takes you around to admire the beauty of the city. Each nook and corner of the city you will find creative masterpieces, showcasing the colourful ambience of this artistic city.
Find the best souvenirs from Lisbon: if relatives and friends have asked for a souvenir and you are wondering what to buy in Lisbon this time get them something different from those boring pins and shot glasses. At Conserveira de Lisboa all they sell is premium quality canned food, the shop has been running since 1950 when canned food was popular because it is affordable and but now it is become gourmet canned food. You will find here the typical sardines, tuna and mackerels together with mousse of codfish and stuffed squids and other yummy stuff.
Go underwater in the Lisbon oceanariums: Located out in the blue waters of the Tagus Estuary, the huge Lisbon Oceanariums rises like a hulking aircraft carrier. You can get up close to colourful puffer fish as well as watch the sharks. You’ll see curious moray eels and meet the cuddly penguins.
Watch the sunset from the roof of a car park: many Miradourous offer fantastic views of the city. It is one of the best places to watch the sun go down in Park Bar. This quirky bar is located on top of a multi storey car park. To get to it you have to enter the car park and take the dirty graffities stairs to the top level. As you are going up there’s no indication that there’s a bar at the end.
Shopping: Go full hipster at LX Factory. Formerly it was known as a collection of factories. The LX Factory has been regenerated and turned into a hipster hotspot full of boutique clothing stores, restaurants and bars. It tends to attract a slightly older and mellower crowd than the Bairro Alto and is ideal if you’re looking for a fun evening with good food and good cocktail but not a night that lasts till 7 in the morning.
Lisbon is a cultural wonder yet besides Fado, street art routes, literature, history and museums there is also a room for adventurous thing to do.
Motorbike Tour: if you want to enjoy a unique experience you shouldn’t miss the opportunity to visit the south of Portugal on a 4 day motorbike tour through Southern Portugal along the Vincentian Coast.
Visiting Lisbon and not going for surfing is like visiting Barcelona and not trying the famous bread with tomato or like going to Amsterdam and not hopping on a bike. Learn to surf with a local surfer. The better way to get to know a city than to get tips from a local on the most unique experiences is to feel it for yourself. This will make your trip truly unforgettable.

Lisbon - The Winding Alleys and Gorgeous Castles
Tumblr media
Back in the 1500s, Portugal was a name to be reckoned with. Its sailors were amongst the most fearless of the lot, exploring regions never before sailed to and forged trade with the flourishing empires of India and South East Asia. Over the next few centuries, the Portuguese had amassed wealth and gold beyond measure through trade and colonialization and had built some of the most fascinating pieces of architecture, mostly centered around their capital Lisbon.
The mystic of Lisbon (or ‘Lisboa’ as they call in Portuguese) is unheralded in the glory of their high castles, their various gastronomic delights and the cultural integrity that sticks together eons after. When I landed in the capital, what struck me most was the general terrain of the place. Lisbon, situated somewhere near the center of Portugal, sits right on the shore line across the country. Having a very rugged terrain with steep slopes across the city, it takes an experienced driver to navigate the streets. So if you are not too sure of your driving skills, I’d advise public transport because they are affordable and ply around frequently. Just my two cents!
Just like many capital cities in Europe, Lisbon also exhibits various distinct localities inside the city. Moreover, since there are a lot of enchanting stuff in and around all these locales, I’d chart them out, to make it an easier to-do guide around Lisbon.
  Alfama
Alfama is the gateway to the old city of Lisbon. In here, you can find many restaurants which serve traditional Portuguese food Francesinha and Bacalhau. While walking around the street, I heard this fascinating tale about the cuisine Francesinha.
Apparently, a hundred years ago, restaurants that did not plan their food resources properly had a lot of food that went to waste in the evening due to a dearth of customers for the day. Soon the restaurants realized that this was a problem and devised a dish that included layering up food that remained at the end of the day. Thus over time, Francesinha was born. Today, the recipe includes bread, french fries, ham, fresh sausage, and steak, covered in a deliberately generous amount of cheese with tomato and beer sauce toppings. Quite a mouthful and definitely something to try out if you are in the city!

There is this another legend of Alfama that needs to be talked about. Back in those times, the district of Alfama was relatively poor and a thriving hub for brothels, with most of the decent folk avoiding the place altogether. This changed after the year of 1775, when a disastrous earthquake rocked Lisbon, killing almost 50,000 people in its wake. Nearly all the buildings in the town center were razed to the ground with churches bearing the brunt as well. However, surprisingly, Alfama escaped its fury and was nearly intact. This situation took the Portuguese by surprise. As a religious and god fearing populace, they could not understand the fact that the area with the brothels did not suffer God’s wrath but the rest of the region did. This event supposedly created a wave of acceptance of the Alfama downtrodden and had laid roots to the Portuguese liberalistic tendencies.
All this aside, Alfama houses some of the grand boulevards in town, with cobble stones decked along the way. In here, I have tried including some of the sights and experiences to enjoy in the district while you get treading around.
  Portas do Sol viewpoint
This is the posterior end of Alfama after you walk through the winding streets and check out a lot of cool graffiti plastered on the walls. Portas do Sol gives you a view of the brown tiled rooftops of the city’s exterior against the azure river, with quite a liberal dose of sea breeze to boot. This is a good place to click a few pictures as well. Sometimes if you are lucky, you could also listen to some Fado music on the street connecting the viewpoint.

Riding the Tram Number 28
The number 28 Lisbon tram is a famous ride around Lisbon. It connects Martim Moniz with Campo Ourique and passes through the popular tourist districts of Graca, Alfama, Baixa, and Estrela. The interesting feature of this specific tram ride is that the carriage dates back to the 1930s and the very nature of it wheezing past traffic on contemporary roads is a good experience to watch out for.

Top of the National Pantheon of Lisbon
This is another popular tourist destination for having a view on the banks of the Tagus river. The National Pantheon itself is a good place to visit if you are interested in medieval architecture. Moreover, once inside the church, you could get into the elevator which takes you to the top of the dome where you can enjoy 360-degree panoramic views of the whole city.
************
Alfama apart, the city center itself is a place teeming with famous monuments and sights to visit.
  Praca do Comercio
This is probably the most famous square in the heart of Lisbon. It holds the merit to be the place which saw probably the only bloodless coup in the history of a country’s independence. In the year of 1974, Portugal got rid of its dictatorship by overthrowing its authoritarian government and replacing it with democracy. This is an achievement since this struggle was mostly peaceful with not a single bullet being fired during the whole episode.

From the Praca do Comercio, you can enjoy breathtaking views towards the Tagus river and have some excellent Portuguese style cuisine from the multitude of restaurants decking the shore.
  Santa Justa Lift
Today, the Santa Justa Lift is just another tourist attraction, but a few decades back, a lot of people used it to avoid climbing the steep slope up the Carmo hill. You could pay a few euros to go up and enjoy a splendid view of the city.
However, if you have no intention of paying for the ride, but still want to enjoy the view, I would suggest you follow the path towards the Carmo ruins which leads you up to the top deck.

Belem region
The area of Belem is quite famous for the number of museums and especially the Pasteis de Belem, a patisserie known for its world famous Belem cakes. The store throngs with people throughout the day (not for nothing) and if you get the time, I would recommend you try everything on their shelf. They are worth their weight in gold!
  ************
Sintra
If you had been waiting to know why there was not a single mention of a castle ever since I opened up the article with that – there’s a reason. A few kilometers west of Lisbon is a place called Sintra, which is known to be the place where you can see fairy tales come alive.
Sintra, has a breathtaking mix of castles, museums, palaces, nature and botanical parks, so much so that it would be impossible to explain every one of them in detail. If you are thinking of making a trip to Sintra, make sure to spend at least two days in the place. I assure you that your time there is worth every penny.
Without further ado, I would introduce you to the two most important places that you got to visit when you are in Sintra.
  Quinta da Regaleira
The Quinta da Regaleira is bewitching in its beauty, not just with its magnificent 20th-century palace, but also with the natural park that it is built over. Once you enter their premises, you are given a map to roam around, trying to spot exotic locations and outposts to climb and marvel at.
The interesting thing about the place is that it is riddled with underground tunnels and little ponds, which make it all the more beautiful. The tunnels though, are quite scary and are endlessly long, dank and dark. Therefore, it is advisable to carry a torch or have a phone on you if you are courageous enough to enter one.
The spot is also famous for its initiation well, which roughly resembles a tower built underground. You have steps to climb down, and once you get to the bottom, you get an eerie feeling of being inside a well.

Park and National Palace of Pena
The Palace of Pena is probably what got Sintra the title of being the place with the Disney castles. The castle looks like it has been taken out of a fairy tale story book, with colors of yellow, blue and fiery orange plastered on the facade. To reach the castle, you have long winding slope uphill which could be avoided if you take a bus. However, I would advise you to try climbing it if you like walking, since the path is picturesque and very beautiful to traverse through.

The 19th century Moorish influenced castle was the creative genius of King Ferdinand II with the queen helping him with the interior decors, making it a lavish treat to your eyes.
************
And this brings us to the end of the tour of Lisbon. Hope you would enjoy the journey, and I look forward to bringing in new episodes in the near future. Until then, ciao!

Rules: answer these 11 questions, make up some more and tag 11 people. Thanks for the tag @yes-i-am-student!! i love you hahaha 💕
1. What’s your dream job? skldfj;alksjfakjsf ahhAAAAhhhh idk maybe a creative director?? but idk in what field (lord pls help me figure out my life)
2. When was the last time you saw your friends? Earlier this day. classes resumed today so i saw them :)
3. What accomplishment are you most proud of in your life? why are your questions so hard geez you could ask like what i ate for breakfast and i wouldn’t know the answer hahahah um i guess getting into the college and the program that i wanted and getting the high grades that makes my parents proud??
4. Do you make new years resolutions? i don’t lol i know i’ll just forget them in around two weeks.
5. Who is your favourite artist or author? artist? like a singer? or like a painter or something? I’m gonna go with painters because I have a several names in mind. Van Eyck, Botticelli, Caravaggio, Vermeer, and Goya. When i was learning about painters and all that, Francisco Goya (de Goya?) was i think my favourite, or like the one that really piqued my interest. His works were dark and kind of scary. And also Jan Van Eyck, his paintings were meticulously detailed af. if you go to this website, you can see his works in great detail. like you can zoom in, and zoom in even further and you’ll still find small details and it’s so cool ahhhh sorry this is getting too long, and idek if you were asking about painters. (im gonna keep going) and i mean of course i also like van gogh. i did an acrylic painting of one of his works (starry night ofc) and it’s so therapeutic. it’s so fun to do bc you don’t have to pay so much detail to proper proportions and stuff, and i liked doing the little strokes. anyway aside from (post)impressionist painters and renaissance, i also like painters who did expressionism and surrealism. (sry i got excited there’s so many) as for authors, i don’t really have a favourite? i kind of like ya books just in general. honestly, i don’t even read as much as i used to do. so sad.
6. How happy are you about where you are in life right now? quite happy actually. stressed, yes, but happy. (tbh, i was really depressed back in high school and i used to think i wouldn’t even make it this far?? like how am i even alive right now wth)
7. Introvert or extrovert (or the mythical ambivert)? introvert. I wish i was an extrovert. I’d probably have achieved so much more if i was. :( but that’s alright i guess
8. Favourite item of clothing? i’ll stop wearing black when they make a darker colour :) Majority of my clothes are black hahaha i like all of them. but there is this one black muscle tee that i wear quite a lot and it has two skeletons on it. I also like sweaters. and black thigh high socks.
9. Where is your dream holiday destination? JAPAN pls
10. Do you like Star Wars? i’ve only watched ep 7. but I have downloaded the first 6 on my laptop a while back bc i really wanna get into it. but rn it’s just sitting there hahaha
11. How much time do you spend on your phone during a typical day? a lot of time. an unhealthy amount of time, im guessing. If i’m not seated in front of my desktop or working on something, i’d be on my phone.
My questions:
1. How was your day? 2. Can you recommend song/s for me to listen to? 3. What’s your favourite meme? 4. What’s one thing you want to improve on this year? 5. Post any random picture from your phone. (You can skip this one if you want) 6. Seen any good movies recently? 7. What’s the coolest thing you have right now? 8. What did you want to be when you were a kid? Is it the same now? 9. What’s the weirdest dream you had? 10. Do you watch any youtubers? 11. Do you have any funny or weird stories about a teacher in your school?
