Day 26 of the Mairiruma Discord Shipfic Challenge Prompt: Having Nightmares Featuring the Bi Disaster herself ----       Her nightmare began the moment the ballroom doors opened. Every demon’s head turned, spotting Azazel Ameri stride into the room, dragging a third wheel on her arm. At least, that’s how Eiko felt.
She was nothing like the woman she stood next to. Her date was strong. Confident. Beauty was her natural state, just like how heat inhabits a flame. Not Eiko, though. All the makeup and fancy dresses couldn’t hide that she was just an ordinary girl pretending not to be.
Iruma, the second half of their trio, was nowhere to be seen. All she saw were the crowd’s eyes transforming into knives, piercing her illusion. You don’t belong here, they said.
A month ago, Eiko begged for the spotlight. Now, she begged for the darkness again. The tears started rising. Her heart beat itself into a frenzy. She needed to run.
     And so she did.
It took her two hours to prepare her makeup for her big debut. Twenty seconds to ruin it. She ran to the nearest bathroom, thankfully empty, and tried and failed to calm her panic.
She heard the sound of the door opening.
In a moment, her date towered over her. She pressed the back of her palm to the smaller girl’s forehead, trying to determine the issue. In the soft lighting, she was beautiful and flawless. Not even her worried expression shook her confident aura, Eiko noticed.
When Ameri asked her what just happened, an ember of jealousy smoldered against her, followed swiftly by shame at herself. Ameri was so perfect she’d forgotten stage fright was even a thing, though she immediately tried to claim otherwise.
“I’m sorry,” Ameri said. “You seemed fine beforehand, and I didn’t notice the signs.” She looked away in guilt. “I’m... I’m just as new to this as you are. This is my first relationship, ever.”
Eiko asked, “Don’t you mean second?”
“No, first,” Ameri corrected. Her hand brushed the side of her face, before resting on her shoulder. “It began with you.”
“But the meetings after school?” Eiko said. “How you two knew each other better than anyone else? Are you saying I lucked out and asked to join a couple that didn’t exist yet?”
“That’s what I’m telling you.” She said. “You saw what we couldn’t, and I can’t ever thank you enough”
“Sure, but what about...” Eiko trailed off.
     “But?” Ameri asked.
If that was true, the past month felt even more like a dream. She’d hallucinated more plausible events than what she assumed was her reality. How could it be that both of her secret crushes welcomed her into their arms, pretended nothing was unusual, and put up with everything wrong with her?
Ameri listened as Eiko laid bare her irrationalities, concluding, “And you’re worried you’ll wake up from your dream.”
“Yeah, but I just want to go back to dreaming, because right now is a nightmare. I can’t deal with everyone looking at me like that. Everyone can see it, I’m not worth either of you.”
Eiko’s mouth ran itself away. “I... I started this knowing I’d be a third wheel. Why shouldn’t I? You’re practically the queen of the school, and Iruma saving me was just the first amazing thing he did, and I’m just... a big rock. A big dumb rock orbiting two stars.”
     “Eiko...”
“I’m just Iruma’s other, worse girlfriend,” she declared.
In the mirror’s reflection, she saw a look of genuine hurt cross the taller girl’s face for a moment, before she exhaled it away. Before Eiko could backtrack or apologize, she leaned over, planting a soft kiss on the top of her head. Tame in terms of romantic gestures, but Eiko’s cheeks started to burn.
Pressing Eiko’s side into her, she said definitely, “You’re not worse. Just different.” Her tone softened further, and she reminded, “You’re my girlfriend too.”
Her head went into a tizzy. Obviously they’ve had a relationship for a month, and the feelings that couldn’t possibly be platonic admiration for longer, but hearing someone else say it — hearing Ameri say it— cleared the final mental block of admitting it. Still, admitting a new part of herself was...
“...scary,” Eiko finished out loud. “Is this alright, Ameri? My parents still only think I’m with Iruma...”
Ameri leaned in further, giving her a smug but genuine smile. She was blushing too. “Are you wondering if it’s okay to love another girl after a month of dating her?”   Eiko’s giggle was small, but there. Her phone buzzed in her purse, and she retrieved it.
“It’s from Iruma,” she said, and her jitters returned.
Ameri gingerly took it from her hands. She responded in her stead, letting him know where they were and that she’d be helping Eiko steady herself. He replied back immediately, promising to wait outside for when their little one recovered.
With that, she put her purse down and looked over her girlfriend in the mirror. She used the few cosmetics in her bag to fix what she could. All Eiko could do was steady her breathing and let her work, silently admiring her the whole while.
As she finished, Eiko looked at her reflection again. A bit of her dignity was recovered. Her eyeshadow was gone, replaced by simple eyeliner, but overall she looked decent. Hardly as radiant as the woman next to her, who made a few simple touch ups as Eiko started to babble.
“You fixed it. You really did, and I mean, it’s not as good as yours, but it’s... so nice. Thank you. But really, like, you’re the most beautiful girl I’ve ever seen, myself included definitely, though. I think every minute I need to pinch myself to make sure I’m not dreaming. Haha”
Ameri couldn’t properly respond, as she was reapplying her lipstick. She still blushed though. As she finished and capped it, she motioned her over. “Eiko.”
  “—Uh, yes?”
Ameri pressed her lips into hers. Eiko’s eyes went wide, and she almost jumped back, before closing her eyes and melting into it.
It was electric, and shivers danced down her spine as the kiss continued. Right before her mind went blank, she decided even if this was a dream, it’d be worth it.
Eiko was still unresponsive and humming oddly when Ameri finally pulled away. She waited for Eiko to recover, her warm smile the first thing she saw as her eyes opened. Ameri told her, “That was my first kiss too.”
     “B-But why?”
“Because we’re dating, Eiko. All of us. It hurts so much when you call yourself the third wheel.” Then she leaned in again, solidly kissing her right cheek. When Eiko caught her face in the mirror, the cherry-red mark proved Ameri’s conviction.
“Just in case you’re wondering if it’s real, you can check that anytime,” her girlfriend told her.
In that moment, nervous energy finally transformed into action. She shot forward, pushing herself up on her tiptoes to reach Ameri’s cheek. The pink color she left behind didn’t stand out as much, but anyone who took a closer look couldn’t possibly miss it.   Ameri pulled her into a quick hug, careful not to ruin the makeup she just fixed, and said, “Look at you. So confident and bold. How does it feel?”
They turned together, regarding themselves in the mirror. Ameri remained perfect and flawless, but she was no longer impossibly so. The shorter blonde demon next to her simply stood a little straighter and had a goofy grin, but she looked beautiful.
Eiko’s heart pounded. It wasn’t from fear this time. Simply proper excitement this time.
     Ameri asked, “Ready, Eiko?”
Her answer was quite, but impossibly strong. “I am.”
Eiko startled awake, and for a terrifying moment, she thought it really was a dream. As she tried to stand up, she couldn’t move, before her brain processed reality again.
She couldn’t move, because she was caught between two bodies. One large and red, the other her size and blue. A sitcom played silently on the screen in front of her, as Iruma and Ameri sandwiched her protectively before they dozed off together. She remembered how they left early when Eiko’s nerves caught up to her again, and opted for a quiet celebration instead. She’d nearly cried at the proof they cared more for her than some silly party.
Her phone was between her legs. Eiko quickly opened it. Switching to selfie mode, she confirmed that the slightly-smudged lipstick mark remained. She shot them both a smile, before sleep once again took her.  ---- note: I wanted to do something soft and sapphic, but also as close to canon as possible. This is the result. hope you enjoyed the read.

“We won???” Isobel turns to Thomas, he can see that sparkle in her eyes that’s been missing for the last couple of months.
She’d been tired, over-worked, hurt and worried, but that’s all in the past.
Because she’s beaming, radiating. Her smile is contagious. “We won, Tom. I won!”
This whole exchange is barely more than a whisper. The judge is still disscusing the terms of the results of the trial.
But when Thomas looks at Isobel, he realizes she’s not listening anymore. The weight had been lifted off her chest and she couldn’t be happier.
Or more perfect, in that moment, for all that matters.
And his heart grows too, twice it’s size, when he looks at her.
When he looks at Isobel. His Izzy.
They finally leave the courtroom, Zoey runs up to her mom, jumping up and hugging her fiercly. Luz is right behind her, hugging Isobel as well.
It’s funny how Thomas has been fighting not to see this scene, that unfolds right now in front of his eyes, but now that he’s seen it...
He can’t imagine anything wrong with it.
It’s almost like it was always meant to be.
After Isobel puts the girls down, she turns to Thomas. “God, Tom, come here! I couldn’t have done it without you.” She’s still buzzing with excitement.
Almost as if she doesn’t realize doing it, she flings herself at Thomas and envelopes him in a hug.
Thomas hugs back, like his life depends on it. He hold her tight, close...
closing his eyes and burrying his face in the crook of her neck.
It’s only now... Thomas realizes...
It’s the first time since their kiss that they shared this kind of contact.
And he missed it like crazy. He didn’t want that hug to end. He wanted to spend forever in Isobel’s arms.
All too fast, Isobel pulls away. She looked a bit flustered, as if she did something wrong, as she looks away and scratches the back of her neck.
Before anyone can notice or point out how awkward that moment is, the whole gang gathers around them.
Alma, Eiko, Levi, and even Faye, all congratulate Isobel for winning the trial.
“We should celebrate!” Levi calls and everyone cheers, following his lead. “You deserve this!” Eiko grabs Isobel and guides her forward with her before Thomas can say another word to her.
They all arrive at a nice diner and order some food and drinks.
Luz and Zoey get two fancy chocolate-milk cups and everyone raises their drinks together.
“To Isobel!” Thomas is the one to call first.
“To Isobel!” Everyone raise their glass.
Isobel blushes, only for a second, before thanking everyone and quickly hugging Zoey one more time.
“Food’s ready!” They hear the sound of a bell and Isobel stands up first. “I’ll get it! I’m starving!”
“I’ll help you,” Thomas follows suit, not even thinking about what he’ll say to her once they’re alone.
They arrive at the counter, and Isobel starts calculating how they’re going to get all those plates back to the table without dropping anything on the floor.
“I’ll get those big ones, I was a waiter, I can handle it. You can take the rest of them?” She motions, just about to props herself the right direction and take the plates in her hands.
“Iz, I just wanted to say first-”
“Can we not do this right now?” She asks before he can finish his sentence.
At the look of his face, her features soften, and she speaks again in a much more comforting voice.
“I’m sorry for cutting you off like that, but if you’re going to talk about our complicated not-exactly-relationship then I have to stop you now.
You’ve been an amazing friend, all these years ago and now too. Maybe it’s just not meant to be. We’re clearly better off as fr-”
“Do you know why I pulled away after that kiss and ran off like I did?” Thomas blurts out abruptly.
His cheeks definitely flush but he can’t stop now.
“Because you realized it was a mistake?” Isobel looks as if it physically pains her to say that, but like she’s trying to hide it.
“Actually, no. The exact opposite, if I may say...”
Isobel blinks at him, starstruck. “What?” She asks in a whisper.
“Izzy... The truth is… It felt amazing. It felt right. I felt whole again. I… my heart was beating so strong inside my chest, and the only thing I could think of was… ‘God… I love this woman’. And it terrified me.
I spent two years fighting not to forget Soledad, and all of a sudden I realized I could move on. I could live without her. Everything was happening so fast and I was... Terrified.” Thomas admits.
He thought saying it out loud would be the hardest thing he’d have to do in his life, but the truth was... Now that it was out of his system, he felt a relief like he never had before. That wieght, finally lifted off his chest...
It felt freeing.
“Tom… Soledad will always be a part of your life. You’ll never forget about her… Just… Here, look.” Isobel turns and gestures towards the sofas, where Zoey and Luz are happily chatting about something. Thomas’ gaze softens as he watches Luz carefully.
“Soledad will always be a part of your life. But she would also want you to be happy.” Isobel breaths in deeply, before asking her next question.
“So tell me. What makes you happy, Tom?” She meets his eyes, eyes sparkling with love and affection, and Thomas doesn’t even have to think about the answer. He knows it already.
“You do.” He reaches, almost bashfully, and wraps his arms around Isobel’s waist.
She leans into the touch and he pulls her close.
Isobel rises to her tiptoes and plants a kiss on Thomas’ lips.
This one is much more tender, sweeter and warm than the one they shared before.
This one felt content.
Thomas kisses her back, trying to convey all of his emotions in that single touch of their lips.
“Uhmmmm..... We get it, you want to be gross together..... But some of us are still waiting for their food!”
Luz’s voice calls beside them and both Thomas and Isobel jump apart.
Apparently they forgot everyone could see them talking and making out instead of getting their food to the table.
“Ahhh... Luz, I can exp-” Thomas starts talking, flustered and practically red as a tomato, but another voice cuts him off again.
“If you get married, Luz and I will be sisters!” Zoey jumps and joins them.
“Ohhhh!!! So cool!!! When are you getting married?!” Luz’s eyes sparkle with the excitment, and both Thomas and Isobel’s eyes widen, as their eyes fly up to meet eachother.
“Maybe we should go on a date first... And give you girls the details later...” Isobel explains, her cheeks getting color in the most flattering way possible.
Thomas is... Smitten.
“Now what do you say about helping us getting all this food back to our table?” Isobel asks, giving each of them a plate, including Thomas.
“Yessss please!” The girls shout in unison and giggle together.
As the four of them go back to the table... Thomas get the feeling this is the start of the rest of his life.
And he couldn’t be happier.

Tumblr media
It was a scorching hot summer day; perfect for a day at the fair. The sky was dotted with a few candy-floss clouds. The entrance could be seen in the distance and the long queues edged forward slowly. People were becoming increasingly excited and impatient as they took a few steps forward every so often. Faint music could be heard from beyond the tall gates with the occasional happy scream suddenly piercing the air. Closer to the entrance and the massive structures of the rides could be seen: a rollercoaster, a big Ferris wheel, a helter-skelter. Below, kids stood watching, eating their sweets and snacks. Ice creams wobbled perilously over the cones and dripped down their small fingers as they melted from the summer heat.
Eiko and Selena walked in hand in hand with Zoey trailing right behind them, as she admired the fair and occasionally screamed about the space-themed games, all the while both Eiko and her mother would smile and encourage her to try the rocket launch wheel.
After running around all day, from one booth to another stuffing their faces with every cheesy fair food there is and after Eiko won a stuffed bunny for the little space princess (that’s Eiko’s nickname for Zoey) at the ring toss, to which Zoey decided to name Saturn (it was her favorite plant because it has 62 moons). On their way to the rocket launch wheel, they bumped into Alma and Levi.
[ one small talk and bad mom puns later ]
Selena pulled Alma aside near a ring toss booth,
“Hey, I know this might not be the right time and this probably your day off, but can I ask you for a favor ?”
“Point me to the body and it’ll be gone before you know it.”
“What no that’s-“
“It doesn’t matter now it’s gone and yes I’ll be your alibi.” Alma winked at her friend.
Giggling the mother gave her friend an eye roll.
“I’m kidding. I’m kidding. Unless there is a body and In that case of course. What can I do for you babes?”
“Never change Alma, never change. So anyways I wanted to take Eiko on a Ferris wheel ride you know trying to do this whole romantic thing and I’m kinda gonna drop the ‘L’ word and maybe.. kinda of.. sort of.. ask her to be my girlfriend?”
“The ‘L’ word? You mean Lesbian?”
Shoving playfully at her friend’s shoulder, Selena laughed.
“Alright say no more, Levi and I were headed to the hall of mirrors we’ll happily take Zoey with us. Go ahead do ya thing. I ship you guys so hard. GO!”
After saying goodbye to everyone and making sure that Zoey was okay with this, the two lovers went on their way hand in hand once again.
The line was a bit long at the Ferris wheel, but it was good a thing; because it gave Selena time to rehearse what to say to Eiko when they would be up high in the sky. This also spiked up her anxiety level to an impossible rate. I mean there she was about to ask this magnificent, beautiful, brilliant, breathtaking woman to be her girlfriend. after the hell she went through her whole life and recently with the custody battle you’d think she could face anything by now, she’d fear nothing. And for the most part, it was true. yes, she had no fears anymore well maybe one fear... what if Eiko doesn’t feel the same? What if she says no? What if she wants to keep it casual ... all these thoughts and what-ifs raced through her mind as she took a step forward into the line. Soon enough it was their turn.
The rest of the people in line got into the other empty carriages, and the operator started up the ride. Selena and Eiko’s carriage pulled up into the air.
As they sat side by side Selena was muttering the courage to take the first step and just come out and say it, but all she could think about was how close they were. Their thighs were almost touching, and that small, one-inch space seemed to be electrically charged. She has been with Eiko multiple times they have been dating for a while but they’ve never been this close and it drove her wild, her heart almost leaped out of her chest.
From this height, everything seemed so small–so far away–but Eiko was right there, so close to her. The rest of the fair, the rest of the town, the rest of the world, was just a backdrop behind her. All the people, the rides, the sounds, they all blended into the background, it’s like time froze at that moment.
The air was cold; a slight breeze blew through Selena’s jacket and lifted a tuft of Eiko’s hair up. And even though she was a hundred feet in the up in the air, with the whole town below her, that didn’t faze her at all. What made her stomach flip was the sight of the brilliant woman sitting next to her.
Being with her made Selena’s heart bump at the speed of light, being in her presence sent heat traversing through her body, being with her took her breath away. The sky was full of stars. The fair was full of light, and the young brunette was more certain than before that she was absolutely in love with one doctor Eiko Matsunaga.
The wind blew past them again, carrying with it the faint smell of candy apples and the distant sound of people cheering, and Selena knew that this was the right moment.
“Hey, Eiko,” she started, looking out a the fair around them. “I have to tell you something.”
Her breath caught in her throat,
Trying with all her might to steady her beating heart, she took a deep breath and held on to the hem of her top for dear life.
“What?” the brilliant doctor whispered turning around a bright smile on her face.
“I, uh, I don’t know how to say this, oh dear god,” Selena stopped again letting out a shaky breath this time.
Eiko watched as her date tried to find the right words. all the while trying her hardest to keep from erupting with happiness.
She knew what Selena was trying to get at because she felt the exact same way.
“IM IN LOVE WITH YOU!” The brunette blurted out practically screaming.
A few seconds of silence went by and Selena wished the earth would swallow her whole.
When suddenly Eiko erupted into a fit of laughter “I’m melting, I can’t take it you’re too cute.”
The young doctor reached over for one of her soon-to-be-girlfriend’s hand; interlacing their fingers and closing in the space between them. No amount of stars or lights in the night could compare to the brightness Selena saw shining in Eiko’s eyes.
The young brunette let out a relived sigh, feeling like the weight of the world had been taken off of her shoulders. They both kept eye contact with each other, neither of them moving, both only inches apart.
“I love you too.” Eiko smiled, closing in the short distance between them, keeping her eyes closed mostly in fear of how strongly her heart was beating.
Their lips met, and the world stopped.
All around them, the fair faded away. There were no lights from other rides. There was no music. There were no other people. The stars didn’t even exist anymore. It was just them in their own little piece of infinity.
Selena felt as light as a feather. If not for the warmth of Eiko's lips, she would’ve thought she was floating, already high above the fair, past the stars, somewhere in a milky way.
They pulled away from each other, both with their eyes closed too, savoring the moment, and stretching their little infinity a bit longer. When Selena opened her eyes, she found Eiko staring back at her, making her stomach do backflips.. hell at this point it’s a full-on acrobat team down there.
“So does this mean I can call you my girlfriend now? Because I’ve been dying to get matching t-shirts.” Selena asked with a huge smirk on her face.
“Yes to the girlfriend part, and how about matching helmets so whenever my beautiful, sexy, smart, wonderful girlfriend would need a ride home, we’d be prepared.”
Blushing crimson at the way the word ‘girlfriend’ left Eiko’s lips, Selena nodded in content.
The Ferris wheel started moving again and startled Selena who had forgotten where they were entirely.
Sitting back against the seat–this time with no space between both of them beamed with joy, and for the first time in their lives they were blissfully happy.

Shumako Week, Day Five: Off the Rails
@shumakoweek Day Five: Nerves
AO3
Summary: It's their first date at Dome Town. Makoto can't help but feel a little bit out of her depth.
A/N: Was at a Black Queen concert on Friday night and have fallen a bit behind. Had an awesome time, though, so it was worth it. I'm not entirely happy with how this come out, but I guess I can always come back to it later. Should hopefully have my submission for Day 6 up in the next few hours also.
.
Makoto wrung the Dome Town pamphlet between her hands, the pages already worn and crinkled. She concentrated on the sound of the paper crumbling and unfurling, hoping it would drown out the flashing, dissonant cries of speeding roller-coasters and their passengers.
Normally, she would have taken the time to diligently study such a text, wanting to carefully plan out the best use of their time for the day. After Eiko had claimed she would flunk a test on love, she wanted to ensure she was prepared for her first date.
Unfortunately, today, her mind was elsewhere.
This was ridiculous.
Makoto didn't get nervous.
While most her age were rattled simply taking exams, Makoto routinely studied and took pop quizzes always making sure she was fully prepared. Public speaking was dreaded by the majority, often a fear thought of as worse than death. Yet, as Shujin's Council President, she made announcements and MC'd events in front of her entire student body. The practice was routine to her.
Alongside her friends, she had fought down vicious manifestations of humanities darkest desires. Any fear she’d initially felt at the hands of Kaneshiro and her first foray into the Metaverse, melted away into anger as he threatened her sister, and she awoke Johanna.
So, how could something as simple as spending time being alone with another person, a prospect most wouldn’t blink an eye at, possibly make her feel so nervous?
Even if this was unfamiliar territory to her, there was simply no reason for it.
She hadn't been bothered when they'd gone to the movies together, or during their trip to the arcade. They had even spent the past few weeks posing as boyfriend and girlfriend, so Makoto already had several "dates" under her belt. This should have been a cinch.
She supposed it was the night Ren confessed to her in Crossroads that everything changed.
"Hey!"
Makoto jumped at the approaching voice, as Ren jogged up from behind her, his hand raised.
Somehow, he looked particularly, effortlessly handsome today. His button-up shirt hung on his lean frame, hair in its usual tousled state. Though she knew he didn't actually require corrective lenses, Makoto was glad that Ren wore glasses. They really brought out his eyes.
"O-oh, Ren." She greeted. "It's good to see you."
"You too. Shall we go?"
"Y- yes. Let's."
Throngs of people ambled through the amusement park queuing for rides, stopping at stands to buy snacks.
It was difficult for Makoto to disguise her disappointment. For all her fixation on picking the perfect spot for their date, she had managed to overlook an obvious issue. Dome Town would of course be busy on a weekend.
Brushing up against strangers, trying to manoeuvre their way through the crowd. Folding in on themselves trying to occupy as little space as possible. It wasn’t exactly the most romantic environment.
The open air, at least, offered a slightly less claustrophobic atmosphere.
Still, if Ren had been at all phased, he did well to hide it. Even insisting on holding her hand as he navigated through the crowd; not wanting to get separated. While she appreciated the gesture, Makoto was conscious of the thin sheen of sweat coating her palms.
It was still Summer. Perhaps she could chalk it up to the heat.
Lines trailed across large sections of the park, leaving a significant wait for any of the main attractions. While Ren seemed to be content waiting in silence, Makoto worried that perhaps it might be boring.
She fidgeted, trying to think of interesting topic for conversation. But the usual ice-breakers didn’t hold much weight. They were already friends and spent a lot of time together, be it at school or as part of their group. There wasn't much she could ask about that she didn't already know.
So, they remained in silence, Makoto stealing a glance in his direction every so often. Her lips would part, a word half-forming occasionally, but nothing of note ever surfaced.
She hoped that maybe she could blame the uncomfortable churning in her stomach on the ride they were about to get on.
.
For Makoto, the rush of blood brought on by the rollercoaster shocked wasn't as exhilarating as riding Johanna, or as enjoyable. There was too much out of her control and it did little to quell the sinking feeling in her chest.
Perhaps that was what made her so anxious.
Studying was easy if you had the discipline. The necessary tools were usually given to you in advance, you merely had to learn them. Fighting shadows didn't unnerve her. She was confident in her skills and could rely upon her teammates. Granted, some of their stronger foes had been a different story.
But this... This was different.
With the ride over, the couple took a moment collect themselves. Finding an empty bench in the shade, Makoto sat down, happy to have a stable surface to rest against.
Ren slumped beside her, his legs still quivering slightly.
"Hey, you holding up okay?"
"I'm fine. Thank you, Ren."
"It's just... You've been pretty quiet. Which I know might seem rich, coming from me."
She tried to smile at his quip, but it felt awkward. His attempt to lighten the mood only drawing attention to the tension in the air.
She could still sense his eyes boring into her, studying, as if relying on his Third Eye to unveil something hidden.
Yet, if he noticed anything, he didn’t pressure her.
"Hey, I think I'm going to get some pancakes. You want any?"
Makoto nodded. It wasn't normally the kind of treat she'd indulge in, being one to watch her nutritional intake. But Ren had offered, and the time he'd spend queuing for the vendor seemed like an opportune time for Makoto to gather her thoughts.
.
Ren strolled alongside her at a leisurely place, hands in his pockets. It was later in the day, and the atmosphere of the park was beginning to settle. Many of the families had grown tired and returned home.
The sun had passed over them, a blip on the horizon, a cool breeze rolling through.
The ambiance was honestly quite relaxing.
It seemed like an opportune moment for Makoto. The kind of romantic setting she'd only read about or seen portrayed in cheesy, blockbuster movies.
It could be her chance to drop a hint about forgetting to bring a jacket, to move closer towards Ren and bask in the warmth of his body.
The kind of thing that couples did.
Yet for as often as the thought arose, she would brush it off. With how closely they had moved against one another amidst the earlier crowd, to bridge the gap between them now should have been simple. Yet each time she would linger a moment too long.
Pace slowing, Makoto’s eyes carried over Ren, taking in his relaxed posture.
Grasping deep within herself, Makoto harnessed the words she felt could best express every stab of hesitance, frustration and unease she felt.
"How can you be so calm about this?"
Ren stopped at the sound of her voice reverberating from behind him. Confused, he glanced over his shoulder, conscious that she had stopped at some point.
"About what?"
"Well," Makoto gestured between the two of them, unsure of how to articulate herself. "This."
"Well... I- I like being with you."
The words trickled from his throat so easily, a part of Makoto suspecting that Ren knew how on edge she felt and was deliberately trying to rattle her. The shock struck her more abruptly than any dip on the rollercoaster's track, enough to distract her from the flutter of delight those words evoked in her.
"Now you're just teasing me." She muttered.
"No, really!" Ren protested, perhaps too loudly, reminded of the time he'd upset her with a light-hearted but perhaps poorly timed robot impression. He cringed as some passersby glanced in their direction before lowering his voice.
"Think about how little time we get to spend together without having to worry about infiltration strategies, or Mementos Requests... That's not even taking into account your Student Council duties, or prepping for entrance exams."
His voice was earnest as he continued, soft and intimate.
"You deserve a little time to relax, Makoto. If being here makes you uncomfortable, we can go somewhere else. I don't mind. I'll do whatever makes you happy, Makoto.
It was a sentiment that she shared, wanting nothing more than to make Ren happy. She wanted everything to work out and for this day to be memorable. Yet, somehow where the idea brought her tension, Ren found contentment.
If she were to worry too much, the moment would pass before she had the chance to savour it. They couldn't become memories if she didn't get to experience them the first time around.
"Well, when you put it like that."
"Trust me, this is easy. Just have fun."
His arm slipped around her, the proximity and warmth of his body a comfort. Smiling, Makoto moved closer into this embrace, suddenly finding the space less daunting.
"Hey, how about we go on the Ferris Wheel? I feel like I've had enough rollercoasters for today."
"You read my mind."
With the sun setting, it would make for perfect ending to their date. A memory they could both cherish.
It was true, there were a lot of things out of her control.
But sometimes the stars would align perfectly.
