BaxterMC Week: Day One

The First Meeting: White Makes Her Move

There was someone watching her.

She twirled the wine glass stem between her fingers, watching the fairy lights reflect off of the crystalline surface. A part of her wondered if this stranger found her interesting, found amusement at the girl who simply stared at the back of her supposed soiree partner as he left. It was her fault that she brought her neighbor to a party he clearly found no comfort in, she knew that much. They stood out like a pair of odd ducks amidst a bevy of graceful swans, a colorless girl against a boy of seafoam green and ocean blue: so unlike each other, and out of sync to top it off.

It likely would have been much less awkward if she had come to this soiree alone. And it wouldn’t have been anything new to her - she preferred doing things by herself, found more comfort in her own company, didn’t she?��

When did the knowledge that she had no friendships aside from Derek Suarez - and whatever she had with Cove Holden, born out of years of scheduled play dates and their parents’ hopes, put on the shoulders of two children who had no choice but to be around each other - begin to bother her? 

Was she normal? Her teachers had left comments on her report card about her lack of social groups… The worried looks on her mothers’ faces, she didn’t want to see. There had been a time where she thought she had a friend. A flash of dark grey eyes framed by soft brown curls, a freckled smile, a soft voice claiming they were friends, before he seamlessly dropped her the moment a certain girl entered the vicinity; the memory surfaced before she quashed it down.

No use thinking about the past.

Wisteria exhaled, slow and measured; she took care when she set her glass down on the table. She cast a surreptitious look about her, though she did not allow her eyes to linger on her audience.

It was time to lay down her opening and wait for this person to respond. To begin on the offensive, one had to put themselves out there. She had no intention of going easy on the person who watched that entire awkward exchange.

“Would you care for a dance?”

Black made its move; now was the time for White to respond.

The other side was possibly the sharpest-dressed kid she had ever seen. 

And everything about him — spare the red that, oddly enough, swept across his cheeks, and his brown eyes — felt so carefully-put together that Wisteria wondered if his smile was of similar artifice. There was not a wrinkle in his grey suit, not a jet-black strand out of place, despite how soft his hair looked. She had watched Ma at the boutique before, and noticed the attention given to making sure that the mannequins were posed just so, clad in clothes that had been arranged to look good. It felt rather like that.

Wisteria felt her own lips curve up; she hoped that it was adequate. “Why not? My partner’s not available, anyway.” She caught his gaze, and decided not to let the gears turn for him to speculate. “You were looking at me earlier. If this is out of pity, you don’t have to.”

She took in the way the red spread across his face with growing interest; her heart threatened to speed up from its even rhythm at the edge his smile gained. Was it wise to start with such an offensive opening? Not that she could take back when she had already moved a piece on the board.

“No reason to waste the night while it is young.” He was good. Despite the flush on his face, the cadence of his voice conveyed someone who couldn’t be less bothered. “Come, a new song is about to start.”

Her next move prepared, the beginnings of an overarching plan in mind, she spoke as he held out his arm for her to take. “Gotta warn you, I’m not so good at this.” His hand was warm around hers. She focused on that, so it didn’t escape her when his grip tightened.

He had the scent of flowers on him, though she wasn’t well-versed enough to know which ones.

It stood out from the Axe body spray that her classmates had started wearing, those heavyhanded and sharp scents that made her head hurt when the teacher asked them to group closer during PE. Those same unknown flowers made their home inside her memory long after he had left her to disappear into the crowd, stunned at the way he flipped the entire game on her.

Wisteria wasn’t sure who exactly won.

Was it her, when she had seen him nearly stop short — what had she done, when she called his true smile cuter? — and she had to take over the dance for the both of them?

Or was it this nameless boy? When he called her adorable in very nearly the same breath he called her out, accurately observing that this is her first soiree?

These were the words that lingered on in her for years after that one dance:

“You know, you should ask with a smile like that if you plan on inviting a girl to dance. It’s… Cuter when it’s genuine.” Wisteria, years later, would very much like to smack herself for the way she spoke to Baxter. He recalled that moment much more fondly than she did, a smile on his face that she could not for the life of her decide if she wanted to kiss off of him or shove her hand on to hide.

And his promise, to be fulfilled half a decade later:

“What is there to be sorry about? Your critique is duly noted, should we meet each other again and I must win your favor for a second dance.”

But this is what stood out most of all.

“And you’re adorable yourself, though you try a tad too hard for your first soiree.”

Baxter Alexander Ward had called her adorable, and Wisteria had yearned to do something about it in the years that followed.

Hello! Sending in a Derek ask to fill the Derek Suarez shaped hole in the current asks u have got. Thinking about any potential thoughts about how Derek in step 2 would be like around a sporty MC who's a teammate on one of his sports teams! Whether cute fluff on them practicing together, or complicated feelings on MC being enthusiastically sporty while he's beginning to question if he really wants to do all this, etc any scenerio u feel like!

Oh this is going to be Something just because of how Derek actually likes the mc because their separated from his school/sports life.

IIRC when he met the MC, he got rejected from the football team, so i wondered how it would play out with the MC on the soccer team. Especially since well, the end of summer in step 2, Derek hits you with the deal

Derek thought that when he saw the MC again after the talk in the park, that it would have been a long time since or at the very least a few weeks.

What he didn’t expect was the MC's school's soccer team practicing on his school's field. Granted, Prism Vista did have the bigger field, and he knew the MC's high school was quite small but still! And to his even bigger shock, the MC was there practicing team! It was like a lighting bolt must have fell from the sky and hit him

However whatever shock entered him left the building as soon as he saw their face light up when they locked eyes, all of that washed away and Derek was filled with a enthusiasm that was unbound

I can see the MC and Derek constantly practicing with each other or against each other on the field and constantly keep each other on edge with all the footwork they would do, and don't get me started on them getting picked up together or even riding the bus together

Though I don't think at this stage that this is what would make Derek start questioning his actual goals in life, if anything it would make him want to push that down harder because of the MC

Not only because he doesn't want to burst the MC's bubble and perception of him because he doesn't want to quit, but because of the fact he's not even cognizant of the fact that he doesn't actually want to do this for the rest of his life

However, let's be very clear here. He loves soccer, and I think the MC playing with him would probably boost his enthusiasm for the sport tenfold

Miles dressing as dark Miles, katana in tow, Britta going prim and proper, and then Neil just doing nothing. This is gonna go well...

Any form of bedside manner has left Miles, he's too frayed around the edges.

Elsa, girl, sweetheart, you really don't want to start accusing Miles of squeezing you for a life boon right now.

Miles resurfacing just enough to make Britta feel bad while she is trying to take charge and hold everything together.

You gotta love Neil's amin focus in all of this is till by his stuff. Those guitars don't order themselves, people!

She isn't crazy, Johnny, if you know Wynn at all you knew she was going to this. It tickles all her little caring, motherficure, selfsacrifice strings that she has.

Quick Thoughts - The Phantom of the Opera - Broadway - January 21, 2023 - Matinee

The main trio was Ben Crawford, Julia Udine and John Riddle

It felt like Nehal Joshi was funnier as Andre this time. Maybe because the audience was really enthusiastic?

Also loved how he said the line ‘Don’t worry Firmin’ during Think of Me, almost as if he was the first person to realize outside of the Phantom/the Girys to know that Christine could sing.

Also Rachel Suarez Groen’s Carlotta was sharper/funnier than I remembered. Obsessed with mocking way she mimicked Firmin when she sad ‘these things do happen’ during her rant.

This is the third show in a row I focussed on the corps during the dressing room sequence. It’s going to be one of the moments I will miss when the Broadway production closes.

Those face caresses Ben’s Phantom does to Julia’s face are currently living rent free in my head.

During Magical Lasso, one of the ballet dancers (I believe it was Giselle O. Alvarez) touching her nose during the ‘nose that never grew line’ as if she’s thinking in her head “No nose????? How are you supposed to breath without a nose????”

How Julia Udine clutches at the red scarf during Wishing... how is it possible to input so much pathos and longing into that one gesture?

Julia’s Christine is pissed during the Phantom’s proposal. I read the unmasking as her getting him to stop (of course the wig was an unfortunate bonus).

Ben’s Phantom did not read the room when he decided he was going to do a public marriage proposal. Julia’s Christine is staring at him as if she’s thinking “are you serious right now?” and Ben’s Phantom is building himself up to this grand “romantic” moment, growing frustrated that Christine isn’t reacting how he wanted her to. He caresses Christine’s face and leans in (for a kiss? a dramatic gesture??). Of course, this is when Christine unmasks him.

Ben flicked Barbara the mannequin off the throne but she flew head first into the edge of the proscenium. Not only does Barbara have a concussion for all of her troubles, she has a gash in her head :(

We had a little flub with the veil during the final lair!!!!! I was probably more stressed about it that Julia was.

When Raoul gets strung up in the noose, the veil started to fall from Julia’s head as she moved her head. It ended up between Raoul and the organ.

For those unaware, in the Broadway production, the blocking is supposed to be that Christine throws the veil toward the organ during the line “Farewell my fallen idol...” and then the Phantom picks up the veil to offer it back to Christine during the lines “end your days with me...” The Phantom then drops the veil downstage in front of the organ, where it will be for the rest of the scene until he needs it to cry into, when Raoul says “Why maker her lie to you....” 

Also Ben saying “NO” in response to Christine saying “you deceived me.” Sir... I’m pretty sure pretending to be the Angel of Music counts as deception.

I don’t think Julia realize she lost the veil until she reached for it. Julia couldn’t throw it but it was at least in the sort-of correct spot? Ben picked it up during the line “For either way you choose” since the veil was already where he had to be and the blocking continued as normal.

I hate to say it, but Ben almost made me cry at the end.

He was just... so sad and pathetic singing to that monkey. He gently covered the monkey’s face then just slowly, as if he didn’t have any energy left in him, rested his head on the monkey’s.

When Christine comes to return the ring, Ben’s Phantom is so shocked at the possibility that she’s come back to stay with him. When he learns that it’s just to return to return the ring, there’s a resigned acceptance to it, that he’s just always meant to be alone.

I swear he said something to Julia’s Christine after the 1st I love you, but I didn’t catch it and unfortunately the recording doesn’t catch it as well.

Book Review: Delta-V by Daniel Suarez

Delta-V is one of my favorite techno-thriller sci-fi books of 2023! I wish I could erase the plot from my memory just so I could read it again for the first time. I am so glad there is a sequel (Critical Mass), which just came out last month. I came to this book at the perfect time because I don't have to wait to continue the adventure.

James Tighe is a cave diver with a traumatic past who is recruited by a billionaire to (potentially) become an asteroid miner. The technology the billionaire is proposing seems a little ahead of its time, and the mission is kept under wraps from the public. It is presented as a possibility for the future… Not something that will actually be happening in the coming months/years. Tighe must go through intense physical and mental training to be selected as a candidate for the mining operation, which will occur in deep space (farther than any human has gone before). As he accepts the opportunity to make some healthy cash and mine asteroids for resources that could aid deep space travel in the future, he finds himself caught in a web of technological catastrophes, business politics, and a massive secret that will compromise his mission's success.

This book checks all the boxes I want in my sci-fi reads. It is fast-paced, has that yummy but horrifying boot camp style "you have to earn this" experience we all love (the sci-fi version of trials we find in fantasy books), is technologically intriguing, and scientifically educational (this is a hard sci-fi), but it also has heart. In a lot of sci-fi books, it can be hard to really get good characterization and connect with the people you are reading about since some authors focus a little too much on the tech and not as much on the characters. Not so here! Though romance is far from the biggest plot theme, it does make appearances that will punch you in the gut. I truly cared about the relationships among/between characters. Each one received thought and development. Even though this book is heavvvyyyyy on the tech descriptions and challenges, the human aspect is not lost. The challenges will make your heart pound because you love everyone so much and you don't want anything bad to happen to them. (Also, the tech parts are amazing and will make you feel smart even if you know nothing about astrophysics, economics, or geology.) I was on the edge of my seat the entire time! If you love The Expanse, then you will want to read Delta-V, because it is even better. Just FYI you might want to flip to the back of the book before getting into the middle of the story because there are pictures of what the mining shuttle and its components look like. I didn't realize this until the end. There are also great book recommendations at the end, which helped to inspire Delta-V!

This book came out in 2019 and, therefore, is not a NetGalley read for me, but Daniel Suarez will be added to my NetGalley profile as one of my new favorite authors. I want more!!

A First-Timer’s Thoughts on the January 27th Performance of Phantom of the Opera (The Day After 35th Anniversary)

The main trio I saw was Paul A. Schaefer, Emilie Kouatchou, and Bronson Norris Murphy (!!!)

I originally thought that I would be seeing Ben Crawford as the Phantom and John Riddle as Raoul, so I literally squealed when I saw the updated cast.

I don’t know if it’s because I’m finally seeing this in real life or have seen the show online way too many times, but I was focusing on the background characters more than the main ones.

During the Hannibal rehearsal, I saw Mme. Giry fixing Meg’s posture all the way to the left of the stage, and later the slave master practicing (or flirting?) with another slave girl to the right back of the stage.

Raquel Suarez Groen is such a wonderful Carlotta, as always (Carlotta my beloved 💕)

There were quite a few Reyer/Christine moments, with one being him kissing the back of Christine’s hand after her performance.

The tight, squeeze hug between Meg and Christine in the dressing room was so cute!

Meg mumbling “Rehearsals… always rehearsals…!” as she stormed out the dressing room was adorable! (Can you tell that I love Meg?)

Paul’s Phantom was actually pretty good. The unmoving arms during MotN though… he just doesn’t have the grace that people would expect of the Phantom.

Paul’s got the creep crawl during STYDI, it was fast too.

During Prima Donna, Firmin gave a rather firm tap on Carlotta’s shoulder, and she leaned father away from him and closer to André afterwards, while giving Firmin wary looks.

Sassy Piangi for the win.

I never knew that the Phantom’s voice floats around the back of the theatre when they’re reading his note! It was such a wonderful experience, and I was actually looking around the theatre, following his voice lol.

Paul’s laugh was sort of… lackluster during Il Muto

Nehal Joshi is the best. André. Ever. His shrill calls for the ballet and his prolonged presence on the stage with the ballet dancers was so entertaining.

The Shepherd and the ballerinas deserve a medal for giving such a funny performance without muttering a single word.

Bronson’s Raoul looked like he genuinely believed in Christine’s fear for the Phantom. He was quite diligent when he looked around for the voice 🤭

Bronson grinning and spinning with his arms wide open during AIAOY was so cute!!!!!

He also spun Emilie around so many times that I lost count! Truthfully, he’s the first Raoul that made me genuinely ship R/C, and that’s saying something coming from someone who’s a hardcore E/C shipper.

I never noticed that the angels lower from the top of the frame for the AIAOY reprise, and I was slightly shocked to see Paul appear from it too (I don’t know what I was expecting honestly).

During Masquerade, the mannequin with the wings and a leg up the railing kept stealing my attention >:(

Piangi and Carlotta flipping the Opera score upside down and then back, trying to understand what they were looking at during Notes II.

Piangi subtly showing Christine where they are in the score always warms my heart!

Not Reyer clapping first and then saying that Piangi was wrong.

Paul sat so still during PONR that it made me wonder if he was simply a statue.

There were so many Raoul/Mme. Giry moments! During Notes/Prima Donna, after Masquerade, and the descent to the Lair.

Poor Barb suffered two concussions. One from hitting the edge of the stage frame, another from hitting the ground.

Paul’s “You. Try. My. Patience.” was so powerful and ferocious! Good job Paul! (I felt that he may have been saving his energy for the second act)

Raoul tried to look away from the kiss? Not sure.

Still not very used to the way they’re getting the lasso off now, but the sound Bronson emitted when the lasso was loosened definitely made up for it 🫣

The audience that night was a jovial bunch. They were incredibly responsive and laughed and clapped at all the right moments. I felt that this group were mainly people who wanted to experience the show again before it closes. I also chatted with some of the audience members at the stage door, and they were all so nice! They warmed the heart of an incredibly reclusive introvert. 🤗

goombella: very valley girl, but not like, lindsay tdi valley girl if u get what i mean :P californian girl ofc

koops: speaks w a lot of umms and uhhs, kinda has a nasally boyish voice.

flurrie: southern belle (literally just the voice lucahjin gave her), but she noticeably uses more aave w a subtle rasp to her voice.

yoshi kid: sounds like a RASCAL. very raspy and scrappy. think doopliss' desc but more hyper.

vivian: low, sing-songy voice, kinda sounds like a more mature fluttershy. she has a dulcet hum to her voice

bobbery: roughened up vocals, just an old sea dog voice

ms mowz: gonna b basic here and say she defo has a transatlantic accent. imagine 'badges are a girls best friend!'

blumiere: i think… a subtle dracula way of speak. crazy take i know. timpani: very quiet and lulling in the first half of spm, but becomes more pronounced w more of an edge to her tone. slips in some spanish flavour the more she remembers. dimentio: VERY sing-songy, effete and delivers all his one-liners w a twirl to his voice. he only ever rlly sounds cherry or theatrically in pain. i'm thinking todd haberkorn's death the kid or korekiyo nastasia: I ALWAYS SWITCH AROUND W HER i like the game's outdated-valley girl speech for her, but i also like… something of a muture lady-like russian accent to her. idk ! o'chunks: everybody do urself a favour and watch roamer's spm lp he does the only authentic o'chunks voice ever mimi: wide variation of tonal pitch changes and dialect swaps. when you first meet her she's talking in that sweet, polite southern hospitality kind-of-way, but drops the accent when she's pissed (the louder she is, the more the mechanics in her body interfere w her voice). her default way of speaking is v catty and facetious sounding. think junko enoshima meets grimes…with a touch of blair the cat's vocal purrs and cloe from bratz (<--pedantic) mr.l: just luigi but he talks w a more lower, slurred voice.

doopliss- ive always read his lines in greg ayres voice LOL specifically like, kaoru hitachiin/leo from ghost stories.. i think esp of leo's 'why don't we meet at the scary, isolated payphone on the bad side of town. alone, yeah :)'. i just rlly like that raspy, incredibly scratchy voice on him. but maybe not as innocent-sounding, i think he'd dip his vowels a lot for the intimidating ghostly effect.

Messi and Suarez Help Barcelona Defeat Rivals Real Madrid 3-0 in El Clasico Thriller

On December 23, 2017, the 17th round of the 2017/18 La Liga season witnessed the national derby between Real Madrid and Barcelona at the Bernabeu Stadium in Madrid. Barcelona defeated Real Madrid 3-0, with goals from Suarez, Messi, and Vidal. Carvajal received a red card for Real Madrid. Within the first two minutes of the game, Ronaldo's header from a corner kick hit the crossbar but was ruled offside. Barcelona's first chance came in the 30th minute when Messi played a diagonal pass to Paulinho whose shot from just outside the box was saved by Navas. One minute later, Marcelo passed to Ronaldo whose shot from the left side of the box was blocked by Ter Stegen's foot. East New York (2022) Pilot

Amanda Warren stars as Deputy Inspector Regina Haywood, the newly promoted boss of the 74th Precinct in East New York – a working-class neighborhood on the edge of Brooklyn in the midst of social upheaval and the early seeds of gentrification. With family ties to the area, Haywood is determined to deploy creative methods to protect her beloved community with the help of her officers and detectives. But first, she has the daunting task of getting them on board, as some are skeptical of her promotion, and others resist the changes she is desperate to make. Her team includes her mentor, shrewd veteran two-star Chief John Suarez; Marvin Sandeford, a highly respected training officer and expert on the neighborhood; Tommy Killian, a detective with some old-school approaches to policing; Capt. Stan Yenko, Haywood’s gregarious and efficient right hand; Crystal Morales, an intuitive detective who can’t be intimidated; Andre Bentley, a trainee from an upper middle-class background; and ambitious patrol officer Brandy Quinlan, the sole volunteer to live in a local housing project as part of Haywood’s plan to bridge the gap between police and community. Regina Haywood has a vision: she and the squad of the 74th Precinct will not only serve their community – they’ll also become part of it.
