«1-12-77, Detroit area - The DEVIL WOMAN/DRAGONS NEVER DIE double that was always playing here or there through the Late 70's winds up at the Northgate (the Screen 13-checked strip mall cinema in Hazel Park), the Ecorse Drive In, Norwest, West Side Drive In, and Wyandotte. I don't know why there was no Downtown bookings, but at least the suburbs including two Downriver screens got a taste of the action.»

Today in Great Lakes shipping history. December 31st.
In 1905, B. F. JONES (Hull#15), 530 x 56 x 31 with a capacity of 10,000 tons, slid down the ways at Great Lakes Engineering Works, Ecorse, Mich. The JONES was built at a cost of $400,000 for Jones and Laughlin Steel. She was declared a constructive total loss after a collision with the CASON J. CALLAWAY in the St. Marys River on August 21, 1955. Most of the hull was scrapped at Superior, Wis., in 1956. Part of the hull became the crane barge SSC-1. Her forward cabins and hatch crane and covers were installed on the SPARKMAN D. FOSTER.
At 4:00 p.m., 31 December 1895, the PURITAN bottom photo (wooden propeller passenger/package freight steamer, 172 foot, 289 gross tons, built in 1887, at Benton Harbor, Michigan) burned at the dock in Oak Hill (Manistee), Michigan. She was a total loss.

BOOK REVIEW - Terror in the City of Champions: Murder, Baseball, and the Secret Society that Shocked Depression-Era Detroit by Tom Stanton
Tumblr media
I finished reading this book the night of the Lions' playoff game against the San Francisco 49ers. I'm writing this review the night after, knowing they've lost.
There was a time Detroit was not the dark horse in sporting achievement; when people looked to the Motor City as a pillar of strength. Coming out of prohibition with record unemployment, Detroit boasted industrial power as America's automobile capital, and it would boast physical prowess as it cornered four of America's greatest exports: Baseball; Football; Boxing; and Hockey.
But beneath the shining veneer of the "City of Champion" lay a dark heart: a gun-toting, hood-wearing mob known variously as the Bullet Club, the Wolverine Club, or the Black Legion.
This is a book in two parts, really. In 1934 and 1935, as Mickey Cochrane takes on the role of the Tigers' player-manager, we chart the rise of Detroit in the sporting world. In baseball their team finally takes shape and they begin a meteoric rise; in boxing Joe Louis wins Detroit's Golden Gloves championship and starts his world champion climb; a small football team moves from Portsmouth to become the Detroit Lions, and is immediately a powerhouse. The first half of this book centres on the achievements of the Tigers and Joe Louis, as they upset the world of baseball and boxing respectively. The whole time there is an undercurrent of malice as we learn about the Black Legion coming together, growing in numbers - swelling their ranks with terrified prospects swearing an oath at gunpoint - but there is little activity to truly shock. Whilst they are, at this point, a club of racists, they do little in the way of heinous acts.
It's in the second half that the Legion comes to the fore. Started in Ohio following the collapse of the Klan, the group expanded to Michigan and in the 1930s it began its reign of terror. We principally follow Dayton Dean, a middle-ranking member of the Legion who is caught up in many plots - the attempted murder of Detroit attorney Maurice Sugar; the bombing of Ecorse mayor Bill Voisine's house; and any number of racially- or religiously-motivated attacks and murders. In the final third of the book we are witness to the murders he partakes in, ordered by higher-up Legion members, and the following investigations which drag the cult into the light and tear away its hood.
Both stories are equally gripping. The tremendous highs of Detroit baseball and boxing mix well with the seedy underbelly of segregationist, isolationist fascism growing in America's heartland. But it's fair to say that they are not exactly intertwined - the closest we get to a scandal in Tigers baseball involving the Black Legion is Mickey Cochrane's friendship with Harry Bennett, the Ford factory's union-busting second-in-command, who may or may not have been a Legion member. There is much speculation on Stanton's part as to whether Legionnaire's crowded the stands at Navin field to watch the Tigers win their games, but for the most part it can only be left at that: speculation.
But that's not to say it's bad. As I say, it's really a book in two parts. And if you take the baseball story and you take the crime story, and you look at them as two separate wholes, they both draw you in and keep you reading. I think both sides are important: the story of Detroit as a sporting powerhouse, something we can look to for hope for the future; and the story of the Black Legion, a far-right menace that met in community centres and basements and plotted to kill black people and Catholics and Jews.
In the wake of the Detroit Lions making the playoffs - and in the current political climate, with the right-wing threat ever-present and growing as another US election draws near - Terror in the City of Champions is a book worth keeping in mind.

"Finds Exile Worth While," Border Cities Star. March 25, 1930. Page 20. ----- Weaver Is Free Again - Because He Spent Time Over Here --- Proved Good Alibi --- Sojourn in Windsor Saves Him Trip to Prison Under Liquor Law ---- The world isn't such a bad old place after all, opines James "Buck" Weaver, former leader in the exile colony here, as he strolls about Detroit - a free man. BUSINESS FADED "Buck" came over here in those hectic days when a score or more liquor operators were sought by the United States under federal indictment for conspiracy to violate the liquor laws of that country.
He had, 'twas said, a flourishing business on the other side, but this soon went to reed when he was not there to guide it. At the time. however, he didn't care. The old "B.R." looked pretty hefty, and the boys and their -ladies were having a fine time on this side of the river.
Costly automobiles, expensive wraps and evening gowns, and high-faluting parties soon began to wither the various bank deposits, and some of the boys decided to go back, take their "rap," and get into the racket again to make some more dough.
"Buck" was one of those who decided to surrender. He did so only to find out that he was not wanted there at all that his exile had been self-imposed.
He felt pretty badly about that, a good business ruined and everything. In fact, he might have joined the exclusive Ecorse millionaire section.
But Fate was finally kind to Mr. Weaver. She demonstrated to him this morning that. had he not taken that little holiday over here, he might now be on his way to prison. For a short time after "Buck's surrender, the United States authorities decided that he probably had committed some of fence for which his conscience was pricking him, and they looked up their files. They found ham listed as one wanted for a liquor offence on November 6, 1928.
He was able to prove to them. how ever. this morning. that at that time he was sojourning on this side of the river, and he left court a freed man.

Today in Great Lakes shipping history. June 22nd.
On 22 June 1909, W.P. THEW (bottom photo)(wooden propeller freighter, 133 foot, 207 gross tons, built in 1884, at Lorain, Ohio) was in ballast, creeping through the fog off Alpena, Michigan on Lake Huron when she was rammed by the WILLIAM LIVINGSTONE (top photo)(steel propeller freighter, 532 foot, 6,634 gross tons, built in 1908, at Ecorse, Michigan). After the collision, the LIVINGSTONE drifted away and lost track of the THEW. The THEW sank in 80 feet of water. Fortunately the steamer MARY C. ELPHICKE answered the distress whistle and picked up the THEW’s crew from the lifeboat. No lives were lost.

Burger King Restaurants Closing: Michigan's Fast Food Fallout
Tumblr media
Do you enjoy the flame-grilled burgers and the crispy fries at Burger King? Unfortunately, we must break some bad news for you. Several locations of Burger King, one of the world's most recognizable fast food franchises, will soon be closing. While the specific causes of these closures may differ, the effect on many neighborhoods is the same: the disappearance of a much-loved fast-food institution. Come with us as we investigate this fast food fallout and examine its effects on customers and workers.
Burger King Restaurants Closing
More than two dozen Burger King restaurants in greater Detroit are closing permanently because their franchise owner, based in Texas, is leaving the state. According to USA Today. More than 400 positions, including GMs, shift supervisors, and team members, will be eliminated due to the transition. On March 22 (2023), the franchisee, EYM King of Michigan, headquartered in Irving, Texas, alerted the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity of the layoffs. According to a WARN notice submitted to the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Growth, the closures resulted from "unforeseen business circumstances" and the inability to negotiate an agreement with Burger King Corp. According to the letter, EYM King of Michigan will begin shutting down all its 26 stores on March 17 and complete by April 15. Locations in Dearborn Heights, Detroit, Ecorse, Ferndale, Flint, Highland Park, Livonia, Royal Oak, Southfield, Walled Lake, Warren, and Whitmore Lake are among those shutting down Burger King locations.
Tumblr media
Both the Irving, Texas office of EYM of Michigan and the Miami, Florida headquarters of Burger King did not respond to messages left with them. As of Monday afternoon, eymking.com, the official state of Michigan website, seems to be down. If you are interested in reading stuff of this kind, please click on the links below. - MHA Season 7 Release Date: Time to Start Counting Down - Blue Lock Season 2 Release Date: Is it Coming Out in 2023?
