the fact in Papa Louie games everyone stays the same age (wally was already old in the first, Penny is still a teen/young adult in the most recent) can mean two things:
either everyone's in some sort of stasis and doesn't age
or
everything happens in the same year, including the three food wars
both are very funny to me for some reason

The Noble and Courageous Pick-Up Game
It can be hard sometimes, doing recordings for an actual-play podcast with x amount of people per episode; when someone misses out due to scheduling or whatever, it can either be just a dead night where nothing gets done, or you can keep a couple of zines or pre-prepped adventures handy to make the best out of it. It's worked before, and a treat at that; Several Cycles at Chunky's stemmed out of using Mothership 0E and Chunky Cheese's Eateria and the Magical Chunky Animal Band by Jet McFin, and despite being cwispy as Hell from a marathon ten hour session before, it took fifteen minutes between, "Hey, let's play this," and getting the game going with player characters all set up, and we had a blast!
Well, last night, we ended up playing a session of There's Something in the Ice by Micah Anderson, whom GM John is a real big fan of, and it had a whole lot of the same magic, if maybe not the ridiculousness and cynicism that Chunky's had. It took about an hour's prep time total, between getting the game info generated, tying it into a background story that worked, and getting people's characters created. We only got halfway into the adventure, which was procedurally generated (big fave of ours) but goddamn was it fun, and everyone's itching to finish it off, then try it again maybe a year from now and see how different it'll be. Keep them zines or whatever handy, because if people can't make it, it's way better to do something than nothing, and you might find yourself having more fun than you would've with your regular thing. Even if you're crazy ADHD unfocused like we are and hop around relentlessly between games, you can still find new ways to break the routine, even if you didn't expect to do so, and it's so much better than dicking around on a Saturday night!

do you know what kind of video games I actually wouldn’t mind to see turned into a live action series?
the papa louie’s eateria games.
Think about it.
First season is about Penny and Alberto being conned by the elusive Papa Louie into managing his sundae shop in a sea-side resort. They save the failing business and in the mean time find their purpose in life or whatever. The Closers are manipulated by Jojo the Food Critic into making their lives harder because he wants their restaurant to close.
Second season, new team, conned by Papa Louie into selling hotdogs, Taylor and Peggy have their buddy movie/series between the black musician and the white rednecky/cowboiy girl. The fact Penny and Alberto often stop by implies they are in the same area as the first season. Peggy and Taylor play “mini-games” in some form, maybe to bond as a team. Perhaps helped in that by the circus of the Romano Family, in which they meet Foodini who is implied by the Romano Family to have spawned at some point or have been recommanded by Papa Louie but they don’t really know him. Big Paulie tries to sell them Crushida Peppers.
Third season is another of the shops, for example the scooperia, with the table where two customers sit together: the team is setting up couples while also serving pasta or sushi or whatever. We get to know people better. Akari and Janana are rival banana plantation owners. Wallis and Edna get together over a bunch of cookies and ice cream. Sarge and Radlynn are siblings who are dressing edgily and are getting lectured by a Vet!Roy about the evils of sentient food enslaving humanity. Vet!Roy is a recurring guest in all three seasons and is never taken seriously. It’s implied he’s got PTSD of the “great war against the pizzas” but no one really believes him. He’s also one of the very few people who’ve met Papa Louie, who always talks to the owners/heroes via phone or carrier birds.
but you know what happens in the fourth?
It starts by a classic cruise or happy hour, but then the radish-headed guy kidnapps everyone. Only Rita and Martin (I think?) escape the terrible fate. The whole fourth season is a “pretending to be gritty but really being lots of fun” Papa Louie 2: When Burgers Attack/PL3: when sundaes attack. Boomer is a fourth-of-july-coloured, over-the-top american stereotype who naturally finds a gun in the wreckage as soon as they’re back. The mad scientist gives them chemical weapons that are probably outlawed by the Geneva Convention. Scooter and Ninjoy do parkour. Somehow all the employees we’ve seen before have cooking-related gifts. Georgito takes a bag with him in case he finds money and he actually finds 100 coins in small tunnels that make everyone else claustrophobic. Actually it’s him trying to find money that makes them discover where the mad scientist was held. Etc.
[edited to put Roy instead of Tony because I always confuse the names]

Week 7
Gathering Video Clips for YMCA Promotional Video + Ideas
YMCA Footage
Over last week, I went down to the YMCA to start getting some video clips to try and start editing for my YMCA Promotional Video. I was unable to get all the shots I needed within the opening times of the YMCA. Some of the reasons were there weren’t enough people, one of my shots listed is going from an empty room to a busy room but for that, I need a lot of people, during this time, this was not possible. The other reason was the age group at that time is not what I wanted, what I want is teenage people, not only are they easier to work with but it is more what you usually see in the YMCA.
The clips I did get however did work but I am definitely going to go back and retake the shots to see if I can frame them better and light them up slightly to emphasis a focal point. Some of the shots that I shot can be found below, the “Pool Ball Break” & “YMCA Painted Board” I can reshoot. The shot of “Leader Speaking to People” I am unable to do, at least in that environment because, at that time, the YMCA was doing a limited-time event but besides that, it is not a massive inconvenience as I can work around it.
Below is a screenshot of some of the video clips that I filmed at the YMCA, you can see on the bottom right corner, there is three clips with the nearly the same thumbnails, that is because they are the same shot but with different methods to try and get a better shot. I will be going through each clip to see if they are what I am wanting in my film, any that is not, they are removed to make it easier for me to see later on what clips I have to use.

——————————————————————————————-
Pool Ball Break
This is one of the first shots I took when I visited the YMCA after getting my test shots. Like mentioned before, I decided to get more close-up shots to capture detail. The shot you see below is a quick Rack Focus shot of someone staring a Pool game and it is them breaking the balls, at the start, the video is focused on the person lining up their shot but as soon as the white ball hits the red & yellow balls, the focus quickly swaps to the coloured balls for a subtle effect. An idea that was suggested was using the breaking of the balls for a transition shot, as o what it transitions into, still needs to be planned.
An issue occurred that I didn’t notice until I left was that I didn’t centre the shot too well, in the video below, you can see the balls is offset to the left slightly and because the balls are vibrant against the blue table, it stands out clearly. Next time this will be reshot and fixed, as well as make sure the camera is not canted and is level as if you look closely in the video, the pool table looks as if it is on an angle, which doesn't appear even.
youtube
YMCA Painted Board
Below is one of the shots that was taken at the YMCA, the painted board is new, it was being created during one of my previous visits and last week was the first that I have seen it finished, it was created to celebrate the 175 years of the YMCA which you can see below in the video. The board itself is large but long, getting it all in one still shot is possible but you would be able to see the areas above and below the board which is not the most appealing to see, trying to get it at a Dutch Angle would make it hard to read the text. My next option was to do a slow Close-Up Pan-Shot, this did work although there are problems, the biggest issue is the shoot is too laggy, the reason for this is the video is required to be filmed at 25-FPS but as you can see, even a slow pan can cause jitteriness. Throughout my next visits to film, I plan on raising the FPS up to 50-FPS so that the camera can take in more frames a second, it will basically be twice as smooth which will look a lot smoother. I plan on borrowing a LED Panel to help highlight the board’s multiple colours, the YMCA’s ceiling light doesn’t give the board justice, they don’t highlight the vibrant colours.
youtube
Leader Speaking to People
Below is a Pan Shot of a leader giving a talk to some children, this group specifically is PAKT which, as stated before, are a subgroup of the YMCA. During this time, the YMCA was doing a limited-time event so unfortunately, I am unable to redo this shot, the only way is to recreate the shot in a different scenario.
The Pan Shot is to show off how many people were listening and in attendance to the leader to show the age groups of parents and kids together like what the PAKT name stands for. The issue that I ran into above with the low FPS for the pan shot wasn’t a problem for the Mid-Long-Shot High-Angle shot below which I feel the reason for this is that above. The camera was close-up focusing a large subjet whereas below, there is a lot of open space, there is no focus point specifically so you don’t notice the issue. This was shot with the kit lens for the 700D, 18-55mm lens to try and get as much of the room in the shot as I can as the 50mm, I was unable to do this as there were obstacles in the way that could not be moved.

YMCA Promotional Video Ideas
While editing some of the video clips, I realised that I do not have enough usable footage, I needed more shots but that is simple enough to work around as I visit the YMCA weekly. I went back to rewatch my inspiration promotional videos, the “Strada Eateria (Coffee Video) and the Outdoor Activity Centre to get some more ideas.
The first idea was at the end of the Strada Eaterie video for when the business’s logo shows up while the background is blurred out to emphasis the red logo against the grey background at 1:14. I want to replicate that kind of effect but with the YMCA logo, one idea was to have someone draw the YMCA logo on the blackboard, take it into Adobe After Effects to trace it, highlight it and make it appear as if it is coming out of the blackboard like in the promotional video.
The next idea was involving the blackboard again, as mentioned before, the blackboard below has some history of the YMCA, I asked if it could be wiped and drawn back on by was quickly rejected. The other side of the board is the same material so it could be possible to draw on that side of the board is flipped. If possible, I want to do a time-lapse of someone redrawing the history of the YMCA like on the original side but throughout the promotional video, keep cutting back to it, football is drawn on, the next shot is people playing football etc. It is as if it is happening in real-time to emphasis what the YMCA has created since it was founded many years ago.
One of the last times I visited, I got some footage of the Heath Hub playing football, I had the camera positioned in the corner to get everything in the shot, now that I have some more Close-Up shots, the Wide-Angle, Long-Shot of the football seems too out of place and empty. Next time, I plan on getting a close-up of some of them playing football, one idea is to have the camera closer to the ground and have people run past the camera with the ball to highlight the activity that they are playing.

Digital Video Production
Week 4
In week 4 we looked at some promotional videos as examples of the kind of videos we could produce, these promotional videos weren't directly linked to our chosen subjects however were still helpful  as they gave us an idea of how we could use transitions and music to enhance the video quality. Later in the day we did our own specific research into promotional videos that related to our client. Some of the class practised transitions they may apply when they go to create their own promotional video.
Analysing Promotional Videos
I got down to researching promotional videos that linked to my client/subject which is carpentry. The issue was most of the videos I was coming across had clearly been made by people in the company who had no experience making videos as most were static images or with poor transitions and either music that did not match or no music at all. It took a lot longer to find good promotional videos that I could use as inspiration but eventually I came across one that was amazing i t had real character to it and didn't feel corporate or forced in anyway it actually feels like a video created by something with talent that cares.
The video itself was created by a studio called Evergreen Media and it was for a carpentry business called ECWoodworking. The establishing shot of this video is close up shot of a chainsaw being turned on and then the footage is slowed as soon as the chainsaw is turned on to add a nice effect. This is a perfect establishing shot as this is the start of the video and the start of this carpenters working day. The most common type of shot in this video are close ups with occasional medium shots. Most of these shots are focused directly on machinery or the carpenter himself with the depth of field changed so the background and foreground and out of focus to emphasise the subject in that scene.
There are two scenes within the video are it includes the interior and exterior of the workshop with the lighting changing drastically from natural bright lighting to a less natural incandescent lighting that works really well and the orange hue it gives off works really well in my opinion.
The transition work alone is really well done as there are no simple transitions that just swipe across the screen every transition has been thought about, from what I can see some transitions are a series of quick shots between longer scenes and others are a quick camera pan into a dutch angle that melds the scenes together. The music included is quite upbeat and matches the pace of the video as the transitions and speed is quite fast so a fast soundtrack is what is needed. The main transitions seem to happen at dips in the music where the beat is about to repeat which adds a nice effect.
youtube
Now I will be analysing this promotional video for a coffee shop called Strada Eateria. The opening of the video begins with a dramatic horizontal opening before the two horizontal black bars stop near the top. It starts of relatively slow as it holds this scene for a bit then a cyclist cycles past and using a mask transition attached to the cyclist the scene changes. This makes transitions far smoother and more natural looking. The next scene is that of inside the coffee shop, quickly we can hear the music beginning, the scene is focused on someone making coffee with and then to customers minding their own business however the audio is amplified and the pouring of coffee and the flipping of a page is loud and adds to the scene.
The next noticeable scene is when the music picks up as there is a man chopping with a knife, the music is synced up perfectly with each chop in a satisfying way. The use of upbeat music sets the tone of the coffee shop, it lets the viewer know this is a good place to get coffee and relax with friends. There is a lot of close up shots mixed with medium shots they almost stagger one another, it goes close up then medium then back to close up.
A majority of the clips shown in the video are close ups, the reason for this, I think, is to get a greater sense of detail whether it be individual coffee beans or the faces of the customers, together it almost enhances your viewing and understanding of the kind of coffee shop this is. We are also getting a sneak peak into the customers lives whether it be them reading, drawing or just chatting all things we do, this helps us relate to the content.
There is use of another mask transition, very similar to the one in the beginning with the cyclist. This time they simply use it to change locations within the shop instead of going from outside to inside like before. The reason they did this was for a much quicker transition than just a simple boring pan across the shop to the new location, this way they can keep up with the quick pace of the clips.
The video ends with the music stopping however not all sound is stopped much like in the beginning, the sound of the scene play out this time it being the many sounds of the coffee shop. It's a subtle way to end compared to a boring abrupt ending. The logo of the coffee shop then comes in and it is set against a blurred background of the coffee shop, this emphasises the logo and makes it pop.
