BOOK REVIEW: "An Illustrated Guide to Korean" by Chad Meyer & Kim Moon-jung

Hello everyone :) This is my very first book review.. or well review on anything so let's get started!

I recently bought this off of Amazon for about $20 (or $20.86 to be exact) and it came a lot sooner than I thought. When I opened the package I was really surprised (and of course delighted until my buttons fall off) because it's a lot smaller than I expected. I thought it was going to be like an actual textbook with the hard cover and everything. I'm disappointed, I'm really pleased. I just wish it was a hard cover, but then it'd be expensive and this is good enough for me. It's actually pretty light and fits very well in my small bag.

The book has a little over 300 pages, all very nicely illustrated on and easy to read. The chapters include:

Essential Expressions

Small talk and making friends

Asking for directions and using public transportation

Food and Restaurants

Preparing for life in Korea

Entertainment and Leisure

Shopping

At the workplace

Places (ex. hospital, laundromats, police station, hair salons, etc.)

Driving

At the beginning and end of the book, they teach about the writing system (and it's romanization) and numbers. In between chapters, it has little illustrations about things like slang (and more), and then some culture tips.

Each phrase is written in Hangul, English and the Romanization.

The only downside about this book is that it seems too formal in some cases. But of course, it includes the "polite common style" and "informal" ones in some sections. Also, some phrases mean something else literally and it doesn't seem like the translation matches up with the actual sentence that's in Korean..

If you have ever checked out the Korean learning apps where they give you words and phrases for a beginner, it's pretty similar, (then again.. maybe all language books are). But this book has a variety of phrases and vocabulary to learn. I found this book really interesting because it has phrases that you would not expect to find. For example:

"설사를 해요." (Seol-sa-reul hae-yo) - I have diarrhea.

I'm not saying that this book has useless phrases, just really interesting ones that make me laugh.

(NOTE: there are drawings of Iron Man in here.. along with other superheros)

I give this book a 7/10 rice cakes! Therefore.. I RECOMMEND BUYING IT!

Note: The Bareun Party was a conservative Korean political party from 2016-2018. They were dissolved and became part of the Bareunmirae Party 바른미래당. That party existed from 2018-2020 and became part of the Party for People’s Livelihoods 민생당.
