I read your post about how Laurens was infamous for his diplomacy skills in Europe, but was he ever banned from the country for it? What did his father think about it, especially since the Laurens reputation would be on the line? Did Franklin ever try to do anything about Laurens’ diplomatic skills?

Definitely not banned, but his name was nonetheless a bitter one amongst the higher-ups of France. He had broken French etiquette but it didn't warrant anything that severe, other than being renowned as a total nuisance. In fact, even after leaving France he was still pestering them for more, that Vergennes wrote to Lafayette;

Despite the enormous efforts we are making for the United States, we have not been able to satisfy Mr. Laurens. That officer has much neglected me since I announced to him His Majesty's decision. I know he is complaining rather indiscreetly, and I foresee that he will make every effort to get at least his chief to share his sentiments. Please warn the latter and engage him to instruct his aide-de-camp and, above all, to make him realize the necessity of giving Congress the most temperate account of the mission he carried out in France. I hope we shall not be sent any more such messages; France is not inexhaustible, and it would be absolutely impossible to give them any consideration. We are doing a great deal for the Americans, but they must do their part to help themselves, too.

He sent a similar report to the Chevalier de La Luzerne and instructed him to minimize any “damage” Laurens may have caused with a biased report to Congress. Funny enough though, after Laurens had taken leave of the court, Vergennes told La Luzerne; “I hope that no one will be sent back here.” [x]

Although I haven't found anything about Henry's knowledge of Laurens's conduct in France. He was taken to London under suspicion of high treason, and imprisoned in the Tower of London on October 6, 1780, until being officially discharged on April 27, 1782. So, I doubt it was easy for the story to be passed around, especially towards Henry who was imprisoned the entire time. Nonetheless, he knew his son's temperament and warned him about discretion in the past—I doubt the story would come as a surprise, but that's not to say he wouldn't be infuriated about it. Especially since the Laurens family did travel through Europe often.

And surprisingly - despite not agreeing with Adams's similar conduct in France - Franklin seemed pleased with Laurens. I suppose because in the end, it worked, no matter the terrible methods. But it could be speculated he probably tried to regulate or give better advice to the hot tempered Laurens during the whole ordeal. Regardless, he even suggested he continue as a diplomat;

Inclos’d is the Order you desire for another Hundred Louis._ Take my Blessing with it, and my Prayers that God may send you safe & well home with your Cargoes. I would not attempt persuading you to quit the military Line, because I think you have the Qualities of Mind and Body that promise your doing great Service & acquiring Honour in that Line. Otherwise I should be happy to See you again here as my Successor; having sometime since written to Congress requesting to be reliev’d, and believing as I firmly do, that they could not put their Affairs in better Hands._

But Laurens was firm on his word that he would not be returning to any diplomatic positions;

I take this opportunity of returning Your Excellency my best thanks for the indulgent expressions in the letter which you did me the honor to write previous to my departure from Paris_ I repeat to Your Excellency that it was only a principle of obedience that brought me to Europe on the present occasion_ that I have not the most remote inclination to engage in the diplomatic line_

Yes.

Absolutely, yes.

It is, at it's core, a love-letter to TRON: Legacy and the lore surrounding that title (i.e. Betrayal, Evolution--and somewhat Uprising). There's even a flourish of 2.0 in there.

It goes beyond "easter eggs,"--those oh look at that! look at that! moments--it is, simply, TRON. The people who made this love this world as much as we do. You'll know what I mean the moment you load up the menu. I cried when I saw the menu.

That being said, the game has its flaws. Despite what the director has said, I genuinely don't believe the game is a stand-alone game. That you don't need to watch Legacy before playing. Unless you are a super casual fan who just likes glowy lights...? I got confused at some things, and I know my shit, y'know?

They just throw you in. Which is good! But, then they add surprisingly more lore than I think anybody anticipated. Lore that I don't necessarily agree with. Lore that I don't think seems relevant to the exact kind of world they're setting up for us, especially when going off of very well-established canon material (i.e. ISOs, my babies whom I love and will protect with my life).

It is clearly the start of a potential trilogy(?) of games, which again, is not a bad thing, I just can't say anything more without spoiling. I was super critical every second of playing, because I don't like to go into new media with a THIS IS PERFECT AND CAN DO NO WRONG attitude, I think that's useless and doesn't give the devs anything real to go off of. It's been 10 years since Uprising, y'know? That's a long time. I apologize to everyone on the stream for my crazy ramblings and calculations about how long a cycle actually lasts.

This is not the Grid we are familiar with. Bithell's writing and world-building makes that obvious as we get deeper in, and what has been a comfort-space for crazy fans like me to dive in and spend an evening artistically, this space becomes foreign, even eerie, and I found myself shivering at times, because no, this isn't home. This is somewhere new. And THAT WAS A FUCKING COOL THING TO FEEL.

My main gripes are all spoilers, so I won't delve into that here. I'm going to replay it this morning by myself in my little blanket burrito and see if some of my questions will be answered the second time around; if some of my anger can be simmered.

But please play it. Please please play it. It's really fucking cool, the de-frag puzzles are FUN, the music is badass and hits all the right notes in my little rat brain, and the characters are diverse and beautiful. There's a lot that it does get right. Again, I find it a love-letter. Not a perfect one, but what is?

I went downtown this weekend to meet a friend for dinner. Dinner was delicious; the best oysters I’ve had in the city, chowder fries, followed by our entree, bone marrow. It’s the first time I’ve had it.

Went somewhere after and got the biggest piece of chocolate cake I’ve ever seen. Twenty layers of chocolate and peanut butter. I ping-ponged the idea of an espresso martini or just an espresso shot. I ended up going back and forth about it in my head up until the second I ordered the martini. It was delicious, but I was still critical of myself after ordering one drink in three weeks.

I surprisingly did not feel the urge to have more while we sat and talked. And I’m back to no alcohol at all.

I still get pangs of mourning it though.

Really? Never again? You’re never going to drink again?

I just hate when I don’t feel confident enough to support my decision.

When I tell people I’m on a sober-kick or that I’m not drinking tonight, 8/10 times they’ll try to convince me otherwise.

“Well, can’t you just have one?”

“You aren’t a one drink kind of girl?”

And then to explain myself feels so pathetic. “No, I’m not a one drink kind of girl. Yes, I wish I could control it. I wish it could be different. I wish I could have just one or two and then be done.”

But I can’t.

And to explain this to people in a public setting is humiliating. I fumble over explanation and I trip over confidence. And I don’t want to jump into a 20 minute speech on the real bottom line_ ..

Which is, alcohol isn’t good for anybody; whether you have a healthy, normal relationship with it, or not.

And I won’t do that, because I never appreciated being around a non-drinker and then feeling judged by them for drinking- I won’t do that to my people.

Along with this feeling of guilt and shame of the explanation on why I can’t control it, comes the aggravating fact that we can still have fun without it.

Alcohol does not make a good time a good time. The people you’re with do, the food does, the atmosphere does, the time does. We don’t have to drink to enjoy the night.

My friend kept saying,

“You seem anxious.”

“Is something on your mind?”

Yes, something is on my mind. I’m trying to prove that I’m still fun even if I’m not drinking, but I can’t fake wild, doesn’t give a fuck her.

She doesn’t care. She over-drinks, she is careless, she is free. She is also rude, insensitive, loud, and outrageously insecure.

I’m okay with not being her anymore.. I’m still having fun, just not dangerous, bingey fun.

Alcohol is the only drug that people will try to convince you is good. It’s the only drug people will publicly push on you. And for people like me that have issues with it, it’s hard to explain the pressure it adds to appear normal, to just say no, and to not let the room know that I think about alcohol more than most people. I think about how much is left, how much I need, how much everyone else is drinking, how I’m drinking more than I should, but it’s ok because everyone else is doing the same thing, and it’s exhausting. It’s exhausting to navigate these feelings while I drink, so it’s refreshing to not have them when I don’t.

But it doesn’t mean it’s not hard.

DAY 7 - SALVAGE SHIP THE WRETCHED_

[Communications commence, Boris is unusually chipper_]

Day Seven, salvage ship The Wretched. Flight Engineer Boris reporting. Seven. Day Se-ven. Seven whole days. A week. Oh god I’ve been alone a WEEK_

I’ll just keep myself occupied. Staying still is going to drive me stir-crazy. Keep up and keep moving_

LOUD NOISES. I DON’T LIKE WHEN THE SHIP STARTS MAKING LOUD FUCKING NOISES! It wasn’t content with glitching the scanners nooooooo we had to go set off the PROXIMITY ALARMS DIDN’T WE?_

[Boris’ yelling echoes around him as he loudly wrestles with controls. An alarm is blaring in the background in a whining, echoing siren_]

WEEWOO WEE FUCKING WOOO SHUT UUUUP! God… Goddamnit! It’s just sitting close enough to set the alarms off knowing it will upset me isn’t it? It damn well knows. It knows I’m slowly losing my mind on this ship and it’s going to try and speed up the process!_

[There’s the sound of a keyboard banging and the alarms cut out. Boris, however, keeps yelling_]

THERE. I’M SO HAP-HAP-HAPPY THAT IT’S NICE AND QUIET NOW!_

[He growls, kicks something that echoes with the impact, and slumps down heavily. As he speaks his voice is calmer_]

I miss ADAM. He’d know the difference and not just ring the fucking proximity alarm. Sure, he didn’t let us know about the asteroid we hit but there were other issues going on - but he’d certainly not fuck up this bad. I miss him. I miss Ada keeping ADAM in line_

Oh… Oh my god. I’ve done it. It’s taken a week of on and off tinkering and trying and retrying but I’ve done it! The beacon is up and responding! It’s broadcasting! Safely too - not in a way that’s going to have this thing whispering over my comms again. It’s broadcasting me speak and maybe… Just maybe someone will respond! Engineering skills finally paying off! Hollis would be proud of me!_

[He’s genuinely so excited, getting up and clapping his hands with growing hope_]

This is Flight Engineer Boris Strugatsky - Survivor of the Salvage Ship The Wretched! If you can hear this please respond! If you can hear this please come and find me! Pinpoint my coordinates and get me off this wreck!_

[He keeps yelling a few more times, his footsteps sounding like he’s spinning in circles until he collapses with heavy breathing_]

I am… I am going to get off this thing. The beacon is my ticket out. I just need it to work. I really hope it works. This is… Hope. After all this week this is hope_

[He sighs with relief_]

Two more tasks today. I am okay. I am okay. I will be okay_

I can’t let my elation at the beacon distract from everything, I still have tasks. I’m still examining the extent of the damage on board this ship in case there are more essential repairs I have to do. Even if the beacon is a good sign this whole thing is not over yet.

There’s damage everywhere I go anyway, far as the eye can see. Corridors marred with scarring from god knows what body parts this alien thing has to attack with. Given the depth of the gouges into the metal panelling I’ve been assuming claws - maybe jaws? Some of them look horribly like teeth marks_

[Pause, Boris makes a shuddering sound_]

Whatever claws this thing has they’re not something I want to be on the receiving end of. They look like they’d tear you to shreds and then your shreds to ribbons… It makes me get a cold feeling in my spine when I look at them for too long_

[Pause_]

Further along, it looks like bite marks along some of the beams and maybe something else. Footprints? Foot… claws? Are those a thing? Yes of course they’re a thing. This thing is sharp all over_

[Sigh_]

At least these are all old damage marks. Nothing new from last check. It hasn’t been here again since and that is reassuring_

I came back to our habitat pod and did some rummaging around. Just to see if I’ve missed anything useful_

[There are noises to suggest he is still rummaging.]

I found a journal that’s so eye-wateringly pink I know it has to have been Ada’s. She’s the only one this into pink to have something this violently coloured. I know it’s hers_

[Pause_]

It feels wrong to read it. Like… Really wrong. That was her diary and her thoughts. Even if she… She… It just feels like it isn’t my business at all_

[There’s a longer pause, and then rustling, the sound of pages turning_]

I, Boris Strugatsky, am an asshole who reads a girl’s personal diary because she’s dead. I am going to hell. I am in hell. I am still reading her diary_

[Pause_]

Ada liked to write about ADAM a lot, there’s a lot of technical stuff in here that’s way beyond even my knowledge of computing. I’m not the most tech illiterate person out there but even still some of this is… Beyond me. She could have gone really far with this. I remember her saying that this was just her entry level step to better stuff - they wanted her to manage ADAM on this ship because she wrote the code for him. She was literally the one keeping him up and alive while he ran the ship and kept the rest of us alive. Now they’re both dead_

[Boris sighs and keeps reading, muttering quietly and inaudibly before speaking into the recorder again_]

Lot of this is disparaging Doug for his pranks, I get that. Rambling about the Commander being strict and then Mary being prudish - that’s rude. Mary was nice, she just… Had a preference for not demanding we fight aliens every week. Life isn’t sci-fi and all that - and well Ada got her wish to fight an alien and now look where we all are. I shouldn’t say that_

[Pause_]

Ada I’m sorry. I’m such a fucking asshole_

She missed stuff from earth a lot. Not home but… Boba tea and bubblegum. Stuff that was rationed up here because you can’t just go back 8 light years to earth and pick them up easily. I get that. Ada was a child compared to the rest of us at nineteen so… I get that_

[Pause_]

I shouldn’t read more of this. It’s private. I’m going to put it with everyone else’s affairs and leave well alone. Time for bed._

I just realised I completely forgot to post this when he was done, whoops So everyone remember that tiny Anon I was making last year? HE IS DONE! :D 1st picture: Anon chilling with the lightcycle I made in woodwork class a while back (it had to have wheels otherwise it wouldn't beat everyone else's cars in a race) 2nd picture: Anon is being a smol bean (he's like half the size of the Disney infinity figures) Not shown because my camera wouldn't focus, his circuits are actually really shiny since I mixed in some silver Acrylic to the paint (which is also Acrylic btw) I can't remember whether I mixed in some glow in the dark paint or not tho. Also due to the Australian heat, some of his lacquer melted off so I had to fix that (this was before that heatwave we had recently mind you) But yeah, this is Anon, he is great, he is smol, he can't stand up and constantly falls off of things (pretty accurate to how he is in the games for me to be honest) END OF LINE_

Transformers: Energon

Hey gang! Today we’ll be discussing the second entry in the Unicron Trilogy, Transformers: Energon. Energon is famously... Not... Great. In this article, we’ll take a look into a bit of why! Of course, there’s still plenty of Energon figures I own and enjoy. I wouldn’t be without my adorable little Sharkticon for... well, at least 10 dollars. Anyways, we’ve got just one essay to go till the end of the Modern period, and until we move over to late Modern! (Man I don’t like that name.) Hope you enjoy!

Where Armada is widely regarded as one of the better Transformers entries, Energon is almost universally regarded as both one of the weakest cartoons and one of the weakest toylines in the history of the brand. Armada had a strong, central theme in Minicons, and used the simplicity of the toys as an attractive feature. Energon struggled to maintain cohesion in terms of toy design and gimmicks, and allowed simplistic designs to become crude. Although there was “an overarching theme of ‘combination’”, it was implemented in several ways across all the various price points, and occasionally in different ways within a price point.(MSipher, Energon) Moreover, this was largely confined to Autobots; Decepticons lacked any sort of universal gimmick. (MSpiher, Energon) Energon had neither the influence, enduring popularity, nor the success of Armada. Its largest impact was putting HasTak in a position to “re-think how to take the line forward from there”. (MSpiher, Energon)

One of the defining features of Energon is the low quality of many of the figures. From a normative perspective, although figures frequently featured more joints than their Armada counterparts, many fans still found the articulation of figures such as Hot Shot wanting and awkward. (Abates, Hot) Although they lack the involved Mini-con gimmicks of Armada, many Energon figures also feature high levels of kibble. Mirage, in particular, wears his entire boat alt mode as a sort of skirt and on his forearms. (Starfield) While this could be argued to have aesthetic merit, along the lines of how the wings of the Seekers are a defining part of their silhouette,three or so large blocks of solid plastic give him an absurdly large backpack that manages to inhibit his leg articulation.(Starfield)

More objectively, many figures, for example Prowl, have awkward proportions in both vehicle and robot modes.(Rolonbolon) A particularly famous example of this is Energon Optimus Prime, whose small limbs and exquisitely large backpack make him decidedly obese in appearance. (Abates, Optimus) Energon also featured the return of the brick. (Omnisvalidus) Wing Saber, essentially a glorified accessory for Optimus Prime, features two points of articulation, one joint at either elbow. (Bodycount) Although not anywhere near universal, some Energon figures were plagued with serious design flaws. Slugslinger features compromised structural integrity. (Chip) The aforementioned Mirage figure comes apart at the knees with regularity. (Starfield) Alpha Quintesson would frequently come misassembled, unable to attach to his base and thus stand. (MSipher, Alpha) Although many of these complaints are not objective or necessarily disqualifying, the sum total of them likely contributed to the lukewarm reception of the line. The issue was not any one thing, but rather, that Energon struggled with all of them.

Although Energon did have general themes, such as the titular Energon and combination more broadly, it struggled to implement them in a consistent, unified manner. The energon gimmick was largely, but not exclusively, confined to the appropriately named Energon class (roughly equivalent to Basics). (Singularity) Although there were combining Decepticons, much of the emphasis of that gimmick was found only in Autobots. (MSipher, Energon) Moreover, there are many different types of combination present. The aforementioned Energon Class figures each came with several clear plastic ‘energon’ accessories, which could be assembled into a larger weapon. (MSipher, Energon). Armada Perceptor also received a new mold figure (one of the bare handful of new mold Mini-cons released in Energon), once again a team of three minicons that combined into a larger robot. (Dark T Zeratul) Autobots of Combat Class and Mega Class (Deluxes and Voyagers, roughly) could combine with each other freely in two robot teams, with one forming the top and arms of the resulting figure, and the other forming the legs. This process was referred to as Powerlinx, despite the fact that in Armada that term had referred to a larger figure’s use of a Mini-con. (HooperX) At the Combat Class, Tow-Line featured the ability to Powerlinx with the back half of his own vehicle mode, which could also form a tool bench of sorts. (MSipher, Tow) Energon also released five robot combiner teams, in the traditions of G1. Three of these figures were released, two of which were Decepticons (the only combining Decepticons in the line). (MSipher, Energon) The limbs of these figures were released at the Energon Class, with the torsos being Combat Class figures. (MSipher, Energon) In addition to the more standard Powerlinx autobots, the Mega Class contained Mega-Dinobot, a pack of two smaller robots able to combine into a larger figure. (MSpiher, Mega)

Larger figures also featured extensive combination gimmicks. “Command Class Autobots (the new molds, at least) each include transforming accessories that form part of their vehicle modes. In robot mode they could combine with these pieces to be in "Brute Mode"” (MSipher, Energon) Optimus Prime has perhaps the most involved combination gimmicks of the Energon line. HE came with a trailer of four different vehicle drones, which could attach over his limbs to form a super mode. He could also combine in two different arrangements with Wing Saber. Finally, Optimus Prime could wear the Supreme Class Omega Supreme figure as a sort of suit of armor. His drones could then attach to the outside of that armor. (Abates, Optimus).

The sheer number of different combining gimmicks present in Energon is somewhat overwhelming. However, many of them are confined to a single figure, and none of them are uniformly applied to the entire line. Much of the work that went into solidifying Mini-cons as a distinct concept simply does not exist in Energon writ large. As a result, it is difficult to characterize exactly what the core theme of Energon is, especially since a little under half of the figures feature no ability to combine whatsoever. This lack of focus likely contributed to the weak sales of the line.

Energon also released a handful of more unusual figures. Alpha Quintesson is perhaps the most famous of these. As a mainline Transformers figure that does not, in fact, transform, the figure is something of a rarity.(MSipher, Alpha) Moreover, it represents the first official toy of any kind of Quintesson (aliens introduced in the 1986 movie). (ItsWalky, Quintesson) The other unusual figure is the Kicker/High Wire two pack. The set features a roughly basic sized High Wire figure which turns into a roughly scale motorcycle that the included Kicker figure can ride. (ItsWalky, High) Although subsequent Transformers lines have included human action figures (in particular the Human Alliance subline of many live action movie lines), it is highly unusual to include one so large. The figure also ends up being unusually simple for a ‘Combat Class’ figure, feeling much more like a big Mini-con.

Transformers: Energon didn’t manage to capitalize on the success of Armada for several reasons. The lack of a cohesive gimmick, the low overall quality of the toys, and the infamously unwatchable TV show all conspired to create a line that, while not necessarily awful, is certainly not fondly remembered. As a direct result, unlike most of the other lines we’ve examined, Energon would not prove to be particularly influential. Even Beast Machines has received more figures that directly reference it. (Monzo) However, Energon did manage to make the occasional contribution, particularly the first Quintesson figure. Of course, none of this is to say that Energon was a terrible line that produced no good figures. Perhaps the most important lesson of the second entry of the Unicron Trilogy is that we can still enjoy figures even if they’re not all we’re used to, and that the line does not define the individual toy.
