Time to talk an unnecessary amount about floors!
Tumblr media
Episode 6 of Dungeon Meshi was produced in collaboration with a smaller studio, Enishiya - and it went way harder than I expected, for being made up of two relatively simple and self contained stories focusing on one character each.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And you can really see how those extra resources meant the animators could give full focus to both halves of the episode. Let's take a look at one piece that stole the show.
The first half was handled primarily by episode director/storyboard artist Keita Nagahara and co-animation director Hirotoshi (or Hiroaki? [1]) Arai. It's actually kinda insane how much of this section can be attributed to these two.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
But the real star of the show is the second half, Chilchuck vs the mimic, led by co-animation director Toya Ooshima in his first animation director role for TV anime!
And the biggest aspect that knocked my dang boots off was something that's very consistent with Ooshima's style: background animation!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
By animating the backgrounds rather than using painted still images, Ooshima and the team of other similarly skilled animators are able to create these beautiful dynamic camera movements that wouldn't be possible otherwise. Like these cuts by Takeshi Maenami where the camera becomes an expressive part of the scene, zipping forward and backward, and tilting to emphasize the speed of this murderous hermit crab. (Maenami's style is also very recognizable here - snappy timing and quick camera movements)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Or this cut by the incredible Kaito Tomioka which cleverly combines a traditional background for the walls with a fully animated floor. The level of detail in these tiles is just completely insane, and used to great effect with this wide, diagonal angle, and the way the camera tentatively drifts forward before reversing direction, and the tiles blur out as it speeds up.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I don't think I'm the only one caught off guard by how much they full-assed this little side story, but it was a pleasant surprise!
I broke down the entire episode in this video here. A lot of research went into this one, and I think it's the best one of these videos I've made so far, so if you're at all interested in more of this type of analysis in video form, I would really appreciate it if you checked it out, or re-blogged this post! Thanks
youtube
[1] It's listed as Hirotoshi on Anime News Network, but Hiroaki on a key frame that Studio Trigger shared on Twitter, so I'm not sure which one is wrong.

Saw the extra snippet in the new Walpurgis no Kaiten 1.1 trailer this afternoon and here are some thoughts:
My guess is this is Madoka's magical girl transformation sequence in the early part of the film? Could also be a weird Kyubey vision (so many eyes!)
This sequence starts with a water drop (a tear?) hitting a surface, then descends on Madoka from above, and she's CRYING, OH BBY NO
Tears have an interesting role in magical girl anime--paradoxically, they are often a symbol of a magical girl's strength (her compassion/ability to FEEL), and may trigger magical healing or other unexpected miracles (cf. Sailor Moon, where Usagi's tears form a magic crystal macguffin). PMMM inverts this by making tears the symbol of a magical girl's destruction--think Sayaka's soul gem shattering when her tear falls on it, or Homura crying in despair in the final battle against Walpurgisnacht.
FURTHERMORE being a magical girl has always been a source of great joy for Madoka, so the fact that she is CRYING as she transforms is a bad sign.
Coupled with the way she drifts aimlessly (spinning in a circle!), as if she can't control her motions and the new lock displayed prominently on her chest in her new costume (with two chains attached)… on a purely subconscious level, she KNOWS something is not right and that she is trapped.
the way the shot pulls out makes it seem like she's "falling down the rabbit hole" - passive, rather than active.
Magical girl transformation sequences are supposed to be upbeat/empowering, but if that's what this is, they really went and made it ominous instead.
the fact that this segments ends with the sound of a phone not being able to connect before abruptly hanging up makes me YELL, communication is attempted but not happening, the message is very obviously not getting through here…
for a moment it sounds like there's a dial-up Internet logging on in the background too, hahaha (if you know, you know)
EYES. SO MANY EYES. The way they all descend at once makes it seem like Kyubey is stalking Madoka.
I love the animation style for this segment, which gives it a surreal dream-like quality while simultaneously making it incredibly unsettling.
once again, props to the marketing team for continuing to give us clips that masterfully convey tone and vibes and themes while still being incredibly ambiguous.

Wind Breaker Episode 6 Review - The Fox Leaves The False Holly
Now, THIS is a well-animated fight of pure hand-to-hand combat. No flashy magics or powers needed. It’s just two delinquents going at it. Cloverworks did an amazing job giving us a fight scene as impactful as Sakura’s brawl from the premiere. I love how it was animated! Sako uses a lot of spin-kicks and punches while Hiiragi is more powerful kicks and punches. I think my favorite aspect of the fight was when Sako was going to kick Hiiragi, but faked it by grabbing his leg. That was so cool! I also really liked Hiiragi utilizing his tall height and long legs by kicking Sako from behind. It shows that the animators know how to get creative with these fight.
Tumblr media
Hiiragi and Sako have history with each other. They used to be friends since elementary school when the former saved the latter from bullies. This was when Sako asked Hiiragi to teach him how to fight. When they were in middle school, Sako was keen on following him for the rest of his life and believed he’d be at the top in Furin. However, Hiiragi said that he was going to work under Umemiya and not take the top spot for himself. The moment he told Sako to not follow him anymore and get a new goal in life was when the rift between them happened. It seems it could be an asinine story for some viewers, but I see it as more of Hiiragi trying to help Sako avoid a potential toxic codependent relationship. He was clearly attached to Hiiragi sort of like how Sugishita holds Umemiya in high regard. However, the only difference between Sako and Sugishita is that Umemiya is already at the top so he is someone already respected while Hiiragi is someone who doesn’t want to take that position for himself. Sako could’ve been someone who could’ve been spiteful of Umemiya or Hiiragi because of this because had Sako gone to Furin, there would be a lot of tension. This was why Sako drifted away from Hiiragi and decided to join Shishitoren after Togame and Choji scouted him. Sako believes that power comes from doing things on your own, without the need to depend on anyone. The fact that Hiiragi chooses to be a follower and not a leader was what irked him.
As someone who read the manga last weekend, I want to say that there’s a very interesting theming with Bofurin and Shishitoren. All of the Bofurin members are named after plants, hence why their team’s image color is green and why Umemiya likes gardening. For example, Sakura’s name uses the kanji for Cherry Blossom. In Hiiragi’s case, his name comes from the Japanese word for Osmanthus heterophyllus, or false holly. The “ko” in Sako’s name is the kanji for fox. By extension, all of Shishitoren are named after animals. The To in Tomiyama stands for rabbit. The Game in Togame stands for turtle. The Ma in Arima stands for horse. The Ka in Kanuma stands for deer. It also helps that Shishitoren means Lion’s Head, hence the animal themed names. I think it’s super creative from a writer’s standpoint.
Speaking of Sako, I have to say that I really like his design. Wind Breaker’s character designs are so intricate. Sako stands out a lot to me. While he’s not as pretty as Suo, I still consider him a beauty. He stands out, hence why I think he’s pretty. It also helps that he does look like a fox like his namesake. No, it’s not weird to call male anime characters pretty and I’ll keep doing it.
I also liked the little banter Sakura, Nirei and Suo usually have as an audience member. Sakura’s shit talking actually gets his allies motivated. Suo’s fighting style is supposed a hodgepodge of different martial arts as his instructor was self taught. Hmmm, this does support my Suo being a successor theory…
As a manga reader, the Hiiragi and Sako fight was animated superbly. However, I honestly cannot wait for Sakura vs Togame, which will happen next week. All I can say is that Hiiragi’s words towards Togame, “You don’t know what’s going to happen” is foreshadowing the results of the match. Who do you think will win?

Stickshift
Stickshift, Final W Games, 2007
Did you watch Initial D? So did the folks at Final W Games! Did you have no idea whatsoever how to adapt it to an RPG? Same for the folks at Final W Games!
Stickshift is a driving RPG that focuses on a drift-racing team (your PCs) as they try to win illegal street races.
Most of the mechanics for Stickshift are fine. Well-designed, even. Your stats are all either social or tie directly into driving. There's a "risk tolerance" factor that tells you how much your character is willing and able to risk in a given situation, and your risk tolerance goes up when something you care about is at stake. I love that. Dice are a unique d6 rating where you add 4, 5, and 6, and subtract 1, 2, and 3, which gives you a weird bimodal distribution. You're more likely to get higher or lower rolls than mid rolls.
However, I said "most" mechanics. And the one that hurts the most is that the racing mechanics are trash. You can put together the solid base mechanics and the risk/reward tradeoffs and your car's maintenance level and... it's all still just a time/distance meter that you fill up on your own. There's no real sense of competition. Roll dice, add to total, keep rolling, keep adding, whomever gets to 100 first wins. You might as well all be rolling separately, and then comparing afterward. There aren't any real tactics you can take advantage of that aren't blindingly obvious. You could make bad choices, but it's obvious that they're bad, so you don't. How do you make a driving game where the driving is not fun?
Another unfortunate thing in Stickshift is that most people have no idea how to describe driving. We've all seen fights in movies and TV shows. Most people come up with Star Trek technobabble or noble intrigue plots without too much trouble. How do you describe driving fast? "I shift into 3rd and floor it," sure, but how many different varieties of that description do you have? I played in a group where one person had seen Initial D, one had seen Tokyo Drift, and the others hadn't seen either, and boy did it show. Stickshift might have benefited from a big chart of descriptions that people could throw into the game.
The art initially looks like it has three clashing styles, until you get to the two-page spread in the middle of the book, when all three styles are used in the same piece you realize that there are three teams of drivers, each with their own art style. That two-page spread slaps. Anime-style guy high-fiving spraypaint-grunge-style guy while newspaper comic guy looks on with disrespect? Yes. The art direction is on point. I say guys because they're almost all guys. Gals are generally in the three classic "chick" stereotypes - the extra-femme girlfriend, the short hot-tempered driver who has to prove herself, and the mechanic with extra-baggy clothing who is secretly super-hot. There are worse stereotypes, I guess, but there's a much wider range of representation they could have gone for than "the standard 3 chicks".
Grab a copy if you want to scavenge it for parts, but most of it you can leave in the junkyard.

-ˋˏ✄┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈ ┈ ┈ ┈ ┈ ┈ ┈ ┈ ┈ ┈ ┈ ┈ ┈ ┈ ┈ ┈ ┈ ┈
…… a day off in the lounge, after who knows how long, the team was finally granted a few days of freedom. The Commandant had already put aside every single paperwork, left his exosuit to be repaired since it was heavily damaged from the last encounter with Ascendants, wearing nothing but comfortable clothes fitting his style, he was resting on one of the sofas.
Liv and Lucia had go to visit some places they wanted to go after the proper papers were signed (constructs are not allowed to leave if it's not for mission unless the Commandant signed a notification and was approved by Hassen), and so the only one was him, enjoying the silence and letting his mind drift to the world of dreams.
A knock on the door. He groaned and walked to the door, before he could even try to open it came another knock. How impatient was the one behind it? A metallic sound, the person behind was none other than Lee himself. With him, there was a small box-shaped CUB, a screen showing an emoji. Zenas thought it was the same deadpan face of Lee. How cute.
ㅤㅤㅤ“What are you doing here? I thought you wanted to visit your brother.” Zenas said while resting on the sofa, again. He couldn't take his eyes from the small buddy.
ㅤㅤㅤ“I already did.” As usual, his face did not change, but Zenas noticed the emojis on the CUB did. For a split of seconds, it looked... happy? before it returned to the serious one.
Lee noticed his Commandant eyes not leaving the small thing beside him, so he handed it to him. It seems that everyone thought Punchy was rather an interesting CUB, and not only an amazing combat partner but very useful in other aspects.
Zenas eyes beamed in excitement. He held the CUB with utmost care, he definitely didn't want to break it. Observing how detailed it was but also speechless at the fact, despite looking quite small in size, it could turn itself into an entire fist and destroy some corrupted without sweating a bit. It was indeed interesting.
He looked at it for quite a while, smiling every now and then, patting its "head", or rubbing its "chin", like he would do with any other dog or cat. Punchy did give the feeling of a pet more than a cub, even Bianca's or Karenina's one that had animal shapes didn't make him go this wild. Maybe it's because of the "face", or because it was owned by Lee. Perhaps both options were valid.
On the other hand, sitting in front of him, was the blonde construct. Zenas was too oblivious to notice, but the blue eyes that would hold kindness for him were showing some annoyance. For some weird reason Lee could not understand, there was a strange emotion forming in his chest, a bit heavy, but mostly he felt.. angry?. The more he looked at Zenas being close to the CUB, giving it so much attention made his mechanical veins boil.
Abruptly Lee took Punchy out of Zenas' hands. Startled by the sudden action, it took him a moment to form a sentence.
ㅤㅤㅤ“Why did you do that? Give Punchy back, he's cute” Zenas complained, frowning. He extended his hands, waiting for Lee.
But that last word, cute, made Lee even more annoying. What was this feeling he was experiencing? Weirdly enough he didn't want to see Punchy now, he was even mad at the small CUB. The only thing that happened was Zenas being overly excited to see it and, after a few minutes of observing, Lee started to feel that way.
ㅤㅤㅤ“... no” Lee answered, but his voice was barely a whisper, almost inaudible.
Zenas was taken aback. Was he... sulking? He looked down at Punchy and the emojis on the screen changed so abruptly, as if it was hard for the tiny pal to discern what its owner was feeling. It suddenly clicked in Zenas mind, but it sounded so ridiculous, maybe he was wrong and there was something else going on, but nevertheless he had to take the shot and ask.
ㅤㅤㅤ“Lee...” he had to take a pause, what would he do if it was actually that? he was going haywire already. “Are you... jealous?”
Lee didn't reply, but Punchy did. Who would've thought that his other partner in battle, the one he himself created to make things easier, would betray him this way? The screen showed a specific set of emojis, lines between parenthesis. Lee was feeling embarrassed. So that only meant what Zenas said was true.
Lee's face was partially hidden by his blonde hair. But Zenas could see his ears, they were so red, he thought if it was possible, his entire face and neck would also be tinted with the same colour. He chuckled, not to mock him, but because that fact made him extremely happy.

I feel like if there's one thing I could probably make a video essay about today if I had the energy to is how utterly terrible seasons three and four of the Harley Quinn animated series were at understanding everything the first two seasons set up.
Season one establishes the status quo, it shows us who Harley Quinn is as a character in this iteration, along with building her relationships and motivations. Season two builds on this further while having great set pieces and concepts which further challenge and showcase the characters.
Both those seasons deal with the budding romance of Harley and Ivy, but they understand that you can't have an entire show based entirely on one couple. The other characters exist for a reason. They diversify the show while also just... being good characters. King Shark, Dr. Psycho, and Clayface are all amazing, and those are just a few of a large and well-balanced cast.
Along with this, Harley Quinn herself is such a good character. She's funny and chaotic without being too much, and when she goes too far, she's called out on it and it's addressed in a mature way. I genuinely, and I'm not sorry for this take, believe that the first two seasons of Harley Quinn is one of the best animated shows out there. It's so unapologetic in it's style, so understanding of what it is and what it can get away with.
And then, there's seasons three and four.
In stark contrast to the complexity of seasons one and two, seasons three and four each choose a singular angle to focus on: "What if Harley Quinn is actually morally good?" in season three, and "What if Harley Quinn isn't actually morally good?" in season four. They create a season-wide problem only to use the entire next season to disprove themselves. It's such poor time management, especially for this show!
One of the biggest reasons I say that is because of Season 1, Episode 7 - "The Line". This episode addresses how Harley Quinn... isn't all the way morally evil, but rather is a complex character. They address the debate of Harley Quinn's morals in one season one episode better then the entirety of seasons three and four! I know the writing team had some changes after the season two finale, but did you not watch the show before writing for it???
Now, I have to admit that I'm being a bit harsh on season three here. It has some interesting concepts that the show runs with, and a few of them work. My biggest problem with it is honestly the fact that it's so clearly the buildup to season four, which is genuinely awful in itself. Harley's team starts to be featured less, they start to push towards the "Maybe she's good?" of Harley, the issues between Harley and Ivy start to drift from a cross episode - or even season - narrative where they both grow and learn more about each other, to a weirdly episode-by-episode affair where they fight, feel a bit upset, then magically make up at the end while we all go aww yay!
The heart of the show has been removed. I wish it hadn't, because I was excited to have a chance to see more cute Harlivy moments, but somehow the show became too engulfed in Harlivy. This was never really the Harley and Ivy show - they were always the main characters, sure, but as I said before, the show understood you can't have a show about exactly one couple. The problem is that their new attempts at focused side characters fail.
Bane, Nora Freeze, and the Bat family are all good characters, but they're at their best when used sparingly. I genuinely don't understand the choice to step away from King Shark and Clayface as main characters, because season four shows how awful they function when they're used sparingly.
I'm mostly disappointed that when I want to recommend one of my favorite shows of all time to someone else, I have to do it with the condition that it falls off significantly as soon as season two's wonderful finale comes to a close. Maybe it should have be Fin, after all.

Drifting Home - Movie/ Film
Drifting Home 2022 - PG - 1h 59m (Movie/ Film)
Tumblr media
Released in 2022 and available through streaming service, Drifting Home is an anime style movie following two childhood friends who reunite in their tweens in an abandoned housing complex they used to live in. Accompanied by their friends, each group explores the complex until they all come together and soon find out that the complex they are in is now adrift in a vast ocean. As their summer comes to an end, these friends must confront their emotions and the past to come together and find a way back to their world.
When I first got into this film, I knew it involved an abandoned complex and aesthetics I am a massive fan of while also showing off amazing animation skills by the team behind it. In trying to expand my watching habits and fall in love with anime again, I worked my way through this film and was astonished at its depth. I knew there was going to be some drama given the age of the characters as well as the circumstances they have been dealt but the past/ memories that we confront with them in combination with the events now occurring in this flooded world… I was pleasantly surprised by the adventure I had and look forward to continuing to explore animated films from other countries.
I think this film could make an excellent addition to a collection that features films for middle grade or rising patrons but could also add to the growing popularity of Japanese and Anime film and culture. While this may not be a special release for a popular anime, it is a strong stand alone film and could hold its own with the right audience. However, this film is only available through streaming so we would have to make sure that we talk up and make accessible our services that overlap with streaming platforms; through online vendors or Library of Things items. A way this film or those like it could be integrated into library activities is definitely in the realm of an anime club or watch club. At a library I work at, here and there we do anime afternoons in the teen space with snacks and shows/ movies that are of the genre. This seems like a great way to acknowledge and appreciate the adoration had for the art form and provide hard working students/ individuals with a chance to relax and enjoy themselves and maybe make some new friends along the way.

Imagine an anime, in which a bunch of dudes who used to be friends when they were younger have drifted apart... when they were children, there was a disaster in the city where they lived, and all their mothers mysteriously went missing. Some of them still lived with their other parent, or different relatives, and a few had to be adopted. They all moved away, and haven’t seen each other since the unexplained incident. Now, they’re all in their early 20s, and have returned home on the anniversary of when they lost their mothers, partially to try to say good-bye and move on, and partially to reconnect. As they get to know each other again... something strange happens! A terrible monster is attacking the city! The dudes try to escape, and wind up running through the park where the tragedy happened (which has become a memorial site since then). They’ve never actually been in this area before, where their mothers all vanished.
As they run through the park, nearly getting attacked by more monsters, each guy finds and object in old undisturbed rubble from the long-ago incident. These objects glow in their hands... and then they are transformed! It is revealed that the mothers of all these dudes were a team of Magical Girls! They had mostly fought evil in their teens, and after defeating their enemy, retired as they grew up. When a new enemy attacked, they weren’t able to win, and only managed to trap this enemy along with themselves (they are basically frozen in crystals, sort of in a pocket dimension). The dudes have found their mothers’ magical items, and inherit their abilities! The current enemy wants to summon the previous villain, but leave the mothers to die. To do this, they are going to attack people and steal their life energy. The Magical Dudes must stop them!
At first, they are basically stuck in the exact outfits their mothers wore, but as they get control of their powers, the outfits change to what is most comfortable for them (in some cases, this means the clothing is more casual, or more elegant. perhaps a couple of the dudes are able to finally admit they like the ribbons and frills~). They’re naturally all color-coded, and their hair color changes to match their theme as well (as they get more into their magical roles, their hair styles change too. they also have magical masks/goggles to help hide their identities). They need to work hard to learn what their mothers could do, but also find new abilities as well. They find their own magical mascots/side-kicks as well~

Eurovision 2002: The Postcards
Tumblr media
The aspect of Eurovision 2002 that is most similar to the 1999 contest is the postcards. They're very much cut from the same cloth only with Biblical tales switched with traditional European fairy-tales and folk-stories.
In a variety of styles, and nearly always with a smattering of humour, a scene is played from one tale or another each ending with some promotion for the Estonian tourist industry. There's no obvious link to the country or act being introduced at all.
Tumblr media
The humour is a mix of the palatable and cringe-inducing and some of these little plays are notably better than others. I'd imagine that each of the 24 postcards were given to a different team to make with a story specified and some aspect of Estonian culture to promote. Go away, have fund and come back with something last no more than 30 seconds.
That's how you end up with a bartender furiously rubbing a lamp to make ghostly women dance around his deserted bar.
Tumblr media
Some of the postcards are animated, again in a variety of styles. It's this variety that's part of the issue this year. Taken together, the postcard lack a coherent style and purpose. There are no design elements to tie them together, no one overarching creative mind and vision. All they do is fit the pattern set down in the brief. This leads to a curate's egg of a postcard set from Tallinn.
The one design element the do all share is the typeface used for the title and the conclusion, and that's the same typeface utilised in the rest of the graphics for the context. It's soft and utilitarian. A bit limp and lacking punch, especially when used alone over a set of random images.
Tumblr media
This use of a simple line of text to frame the postcard is more of a call-back to 2000, but those postcards not only linked the action to the relevant country about to appear on stage, but the scenes were all rooted in the reality of the host country rather than drifting all around the world of fantasy, legends and lands far, far away from Estonia.
Although there are some highlights, the 2002 postcards are a little bit of a let down.

Robot Chicken #66: “Tell My Mom” | January 4, 2009 - 11:30PM | S04E05
This one has a wide array of jokes that I mostly don’t care for. I will discuss two sketches because I really need to not be writing about this show so much. You don’t need me saying (for demonstration purposes only) “There’s one where the Hungry Hungry Hippos barf… hmmm, check please!”.
Okay, the first sketch is one that once made an informal list of worst sketches I’d ever seen. It’s Joey Fatone on a stage with an easel, which he is using for visual aid for a sketch he’s pitching to the Robot Chicken show. It’s supposed to be a lame idea. But, it's not satisfyingly lame, if you get my drift. It feels like a sketch for babies or something. Like, even with the intended irony level, it feels like it’s rated freaking G! I need some PG-13 stuff, STAT.
The other sketch I want to highlight is the B-Team, which pisses me off. There are a number of sketches on Robot Chicken that remind me of ideas I had in high school. This one does, but I remember it as an idea that I rejected for being too easy and dumb. An off-brand A-Team called The B-Team? Who on Earth hasn’t thought of that premise. I did like the punchline where they attempt to build a thing and just give themselves carbon monoxide poisoning while in a locked garage. Admittedly, this one grated on me more for the fact that it was highlighted in the promo for the episode, like they were PROUD OF IT. NASTY!

King of the Hill (January 1st, 2009 - 10:00PM)
Starting with the episode "Westie Side Story", for some reason (that's like episode 6), Adult Swim began airing King of the Hill at 10PM. On Monday December 29th (mere days before this), Adult Swim weekdays expanded into 10PM. That slot was quickly filled with a pair of King of the Hill episodes, which I'd argue is a pretty good transitional show from Cartoon Network into the stankier Adult Swim.
Do any of you remember seeing an interview from some respected anime guy, who was asked what his favorite cartoon of all time was and he got mildly bashful and said it was King of the Hill, and that he considered it a masterpiece? I can't find it, but I swear I read that once. Anyway, I agree with that guy. King of the Hill is wonderful. It's "post-classic" years are still very solid.
This is also a show that I badly need to rewatch. I haven't on-purpose watched this show in over a decade, maybe.
The Adult Swim run was also welcome because I remember the DVD releases had halted at this point, so seasons 7 onward were not available to own. This is one of the last shows I remember "collecting" by recording the missing seasons on DVD-R.
I don't remember if they started right away, but King of the Hill typically aired with special bumpers that seemed like more typical sponorship bumpers; "King of the Hill is brought to you by" but then they'd name a fictional business or organization from the show itself.
I respect King of the Hill and consider it fun.
MAIL BAG:
Shameful story: In high school a funny friend of mine was passing around an exquisite corpse-style drawing for fun. One of the things he drew was a little fish with a funny deadpan expression. I added what I thought was a brilliant idea i'd just had: a little speaker plugged into this fish's brain broadcasting his thoughts (a little speech bubble portrayed him saying "oh no.") I was so proud. Then some time later I sat down and re-watched Fire Ant for the first time in a while. Oh, right. Fuck!
Who among us hasn't stolen from Space Ghost? I am certain I did the same shit. Space Ghost, Mystery Science Theater, and Kids in the Hall were probably the shows I cribbed from the most. Also cartoons stealing from each other is just such a rampant thing I feel like it's basically a non-issue. I forgive you for your crime, I'm nice!

WHG 19: The chariots
whg tag list: @concealeddarkness13 @pen-of-roses @ratracechronicler @knmartinshouldbewriting @clocksandchaos @forthesanityofsome
---
On Asher’s suggestion, I decided I would try and play nice for the stylists once we got off the train. He’d said it wouldn’t do me any good to cause trouble yet but the way they circled and eyed me up like stalking animals... I didn’t like it. They all smelled too strong like chemicals that were supposed to smell like roses but applied far stronger than any flower could ever smell. An artificial nectar. It burned my nose. I didn’t like it.
One of them, the tallest and probably the leader, leaned in and I had to stop myself from gagging. “Now, what should we do with you?”
He reached to tilt up my chin and before I could think better of it I snapped at his fingers, stopping myself just before it would have actually left a mark. He took his hand back and shook it out cursing under his breath but when he looked back to my surprise he was beaming. Smiling ear to ear.
“Well!” He slapped his hands down on my shoulders and presented me to the others. “She’s got sharp little teeth. We might have a fighting chance at victory this year!” He whirled me around to face him again. “Keep that up my girl and they’ll love you!”
I blinked, opening my mouth but failing to think of what to say. So... So they liked this? Was this the kind of things that the Capitol was into? I still hadn’t thought of anything as they sat me down in the makeup chair, chatting and poking and brushing. Maybe I should have bit him harder. Asher would never believe me if I told him they approved of it, but on the other hand... Maybe Asher didn’t need to know I’d already gone and done the opposite of what he suggested.
The styling team sprayed glitter in my hair, a silver shimmer that ended up looking almost natural like it wasn’t plastic and aerosol. They styled it back smooth and slick and curling down around my neck and shoulders and dressed me in sheer, almost cellophane-like robes that drifted and shone like oil on clear water with a dark green slip dress below embroidered in gold patterns that I couldn’t decipher for the life of me. The way they seemed to be placed deliberately must have been supposed to conjure some kind of image, but I didn’t know what.
“There, you’re all set!”
The head stylist gave me a pat on the back that turned to a gentle shove towards the waiting chariots. Each had a horse, big and sturdy at the front in all kinds of colours. I stood and watched one of them from a very generous distance. How come they were so strong but still did what people wanted them to? Just looking at them they seemed like they would have no trouble trampling anything in their way so why didn’t they? Did they like pulling carts? Maybe it was fun? If only I could ask them.
I didn’t talk much to the tributes sharing the chariot with me, from my district. I’d never met them before and they didn’t seem to know who I was either and I was fine with that. Besides... I gripped the front of the chariot and stared out at the gathered crowd. I might have to kill these two anyway so it wouldn’t do me much good to get close to them now. They didn’t know me. They didn’t have any reason to want me alive instead of themselves. None of the tributes being paraded around did. There were a lot of them this year too. Seeing them all spread across the clearing before the president’s podium... There were a lot of people who wanted me dead. Who I’d have to kill to live.
I swallowed, shuddering under the noises and the lights and the shouts from the crowd gathered to see us all for the first time. Asher might have found his way into that crowd but I didn’t want to bet on it. There were a lot of people there and it didn’t seem like something that he’d like. He’d promised he’d meet me afterwards though and that was good enough.
The noise died down and the president started his speech but I couldn’t understand most of it from the echoing of the microphone and the sound bouncing off the stands. It probably wasn’t very interesting anyway, and probably wasn’t even that exciting for him either. By now I doubt there was much new content to add to a speech he had to give every year.
The only interesting part of the speech was when a seagull went from lazily soaring above the chariots to swooping low over my head to land in front of our horse to wander over the dirt and pick at items thrown by the crowds. I leaned over the edge of my chariot as it turned over roses, poked at fancy lace creations, and pecked at jewelry that might have be thrown intentionally or may have slipped off of fingers and wrists by accident. It wandered an browsed until one of the horse staff shooed it away, but not before snatching a shiny gold ring and flying off with it. Good for them.
Music started up again and the chariot lurched into motion. The sooner it was quiet again the better but I couldn’t let the other tributes know that, so I kept my head up and even managed a small wave at the end. I could slump into a chair or a couch later once the excitement was over.

The Beginning: Jean x Renee Timeski
Renee had quickly become a comfort to him, a safety blanket that made doing the hardest things easier. Coming from a world of cold darkness, she was nothing but loving warmth. His entire life Jean told himself not to fall in love, he didn’t want to become that vulnerable or weak in front of another person. His parents had thrown him to the wolves and he learned at a young age not to depend on others. He knew he could only rely on himself. But that all changed when he met Renee. From the moment they met he knew she saw right through his tough façade. Her bright blue eyes could see through to the hurt he had been masking so well, and as they got closer it became impossible to hide anything from her.
She taught him to talk about and process his feelings for the first time in his life. He learned he could make his own decisions, regarding his body and life. Slowly discovering the things that brought him joy; animals, music, and reading were all new things that made him happy. Renee let him slip, always being there to support and comfort him. At first it was hard to let her soothe his anxiety, but over time he knew she was the first person to go to when his dark thoughts took over.
Now four years later, she was his person, his partner. Living in their own safe apartment, he could be completely vulnerable with her. Mornings were hard for Jean when he didn’t have to be up for Exy practice. Not sleeping through most nights, he let Renee enjoy her quiet early mornings. He preferred the night, but that was also when things were the most difficult. Intrusive thoughts taking over, making him feel guilty for being happy. His mind would wander to the darkest places he thought he had locked away. And when he couldn’t hold the doors that locked away those memories closed anymore, they would all come flooding back in.
Sometimes he’d have a panic attack and have to wake Renee, but he tried to avoid that as much as possible. Other times he’d lay in bed just holding her tight, afraid if he let go she’d disappear and he’d wake up in The Nest all over again. On the rare occasion he’d cry himself to sleep in her arms as she rubbed small circles on his back. Renee was the only one he’d let freely touch him and even then there were times he’d still flinch or jump at the sudden affection.
The night before had been long, he had a nightmare early on and was afraid to go back to sleep. Finally giving in to his exhaustion at around 6 am, he stayed in bed even after Renee got up to start her day. Occasionally he’d open his eyes to steal glances at her across the studio apartment before drifting back to sleep. When he finally woke for the day, his cold heart melted seeing his person in the kitchen.
They both agreed a studio apartment would be better for Jean’s anxiety. Laying in bed he could see the entire apartment as well as the front door. Most of the furniture was Renee’s, but he didn’t mind. He was still struggling with his personal style in clothing let alone decorating an entire apartment. She made sure the apartment was filled with small lights that Jean could leave on throughout the night but still sleep through. Despite the open floor plan, she had made each section of the apartment warm and cozy just like her. Unlike Jean, Renee had a green thumb and collected all kinds of plants.
Slowly getting out of bed, he felt the warmth of a small creature against his hip. Looking down at the sleeping tabby cat Renee had brought home as a kitten, he ran his calloused fingers across its soft fur. Walter, stretched under the familiar touch of Jean before settling back asleep in the afternoon sun. Knees aching as he finally got up for the day.
“Good morning, love” Renee smiled from the stove when she saw him crawl out of their bed. Wearing an oversized team shirt with his name on it, Renee looked so small wearing his clothes.
“Hi baby, is it even morning anymore?” coming up behind her, he wrapped his arms tight around her waist.
“No it’s not, but you still get a good morning” , laughing at her partner.
Burying his face in the crook of her neck, he left soft kisses on her smooth skin. “What are you making?”
Smiling at Jean's rare affection, she knew it would be a good morning since he was feeling comfortable touching her. “Well, I have brownies in the oven to bring with me to work tomorrow. I also made some for you don’t worry” she smirked, looking over her shoulder at him.
“Lucky me” resting his head on her shoulder, he stayed as still as he could so he wouldn’t disturb her.
Moving around the stove with ease, she added. “Now I’m making some butternut squash soup. Do you want some?”
“Maybe in a little bit. I don’t think I can eat anything yet” giving her a gentle squeeze, he stayed close to her back.
“Did you not sleep well again?” The softness in her voice made him not feel guilty for waking her up all the time. Her soft hands rubbing against his rough ones kept his heartbeat steady.
“Do I ever?” He laughed, letting the vibrations pass through his chest into her shoulders. Feeling her lean back in his arms, he moved to pick her up. Setting her on the edge of the counter, he positioned himself perfectly in between her thighs. “Did I wake you?”
“No, but you know you could have. Especially because it’s a Sunday.” Poking his chest, she shot him one of her looks. Jean knew she’d always be there for him, but his brain still felt guilty or like he was bothering her.
“I know baby, I just wanted you to rest. It’s nothing new I can’t handle” he reassured her, rubbing her thighs. Feeling her soft skin under his beat up hands always helped him feel grounded.
Cupping his face, she forced him to look at her. “I’m serious. You and I, we’re a team now. And if you need help I’m here, always. If we need to flip to the other end of the bed in the middle of the night or talk it out at three am we can. If we need to turn the lights on or play music those are ok too”
“Thank you, baby.” kissing her gently, he pressed their foreheads together. “I love you” it wasn’t something he said often, though he wished he could, it was never a natural phrase to him. Although he was the one to say it first, he knew he and Renee loved each other long before he got the courage to say it out loud. He appreciated that she always gave him the time to do things, especially since he wasn’t as fast as others with his emotions. Everything had to be processed and even though he knew he could trust Renee sometimes the dark voices put ideas in his head.
“I love you too and before you say anything, yes you deserve this” she smirked, reading his mind once again. Renee had a way of doing that, knowing his feelings when he couldn’t put them to words or knowing what he was thinking before he could voice them. In four years she had helped improve his English, but early in the morning before he had coffee or tea his brain took longer to load. His panic attacks were worse and sometimes he lost all English. Renee had started taking French lessons for him and in the last year her conversational skills had improved greatly.
Pulling her into a tight hug, he smiled at the laughter escaping her chest. Holding her close, he rubbed his thumbs on her lower back. Gently playing with his hair, she whispered “I need to turn the burner off if we’re going to stay like this”
“Shit! Sorry!” He gasped, jumping back to cut the fire off on the stove. Turning back to see Renee biting her lip, he couldn’t help the subconscious pout that formed on his face. “What?”
“You’re just adorable is all” she smiled.
“You’re the only one to ever say that to me” placing himself back between her legs, he leaned close to her “and the only one I’d ever let say it”
“What, Kevin never called you adorable?” She teased, kissing the tip of his nose.
“Not even when he was drunk, that shit head” he smirked.
“How mean, next time I see him I’ll have to talk to him” she teased, linking their pinkies together the way he liked. It was enough contact to keep him grounded when he was overwhelmed but not too much to push him over the edge.
“Old teammate to teammate maybe he’ll listen to you” a low laugh escaped his chest, he laughed more with Renee then he had in his entire life. “He never listens to me, even now”
“He’ll listen to me” she smirked. “Do you want to watch a movie today?” She asked while swinging their arms.
“Maybe, but nothing like the last one” he sighed.
“What? You didn’t like ratatouille” she pouted.
“Baby it’s unrealistic! How many rats do you know who can read, let alone cook? And how can he control the man by pulling his hair? Science doesn’t work like that” he explained while moving his free hand in small dramatic motions.
“Ok no ratatouille. Animated or with real people?” She asked.
“People” he thought about it for a moment. “The cartoons don’t make sense”
“Alright… how about the princess bride?” She suggested. “It’s a classic”
“Is this like that other ‘classic’ you suggested” he raised an eyebrow while moving his fingers for air quotes.
“I understand now that CaddyShack might have some missing cultural pieces. But this one is good, and it’s one of my favorites” she batted her eyelashes in a way she knew Jean couldn’t say no to.
“Alright, alright. Just let my brain turn on first” finally stepping back, he moved to make himself some coffee. “You want more?”
“No, I’ve switched to tea for the day. Popcorn later?”
“You’ll eat it all, but yes I’ll have a bite” he teased.
“I don’t eat the entire thing!” She gasped. Watching him raise an eyebrow at her, she pouted. “It’s cause you’re slow and don’t eat it. I offered you your own bowl last time”
“You can have all of it, I don’t mind baby” he rarely saw Renee like this, and never in front of others, but it was one of the many things he loved about her.
Jean didn’t care for movies, what he did like was having Renee curled up in his arms. At night they rotated who was the little spoon, he’d never admit it but he loved being the little spoon with her. They started off their movie with Renee in his arms, but at some point he ended up with his head in her lap. He wasn’t expecting to fall asleep, it took a lot for him to sleep comfortably, so when he woke up hours later to the sun setting and Renee knitting above him he was stunned.
Letting out a long groan, Renee simply smiled down at him. Moving her project to the side, she readjusted the blanket around his shoulders. Taking her hand in his, he pulled it close to his chest. “Movie is gone?”
“I paused it when you fell asleep” rubbing her thumb along his hand as he nestled closer to her.
“sorry” his voice low and gruff from sleep.
“You’re fine, love” her tone was always so honest and loving. “We can finish it another time”
“Later?” He felt bad that he had missed out on her favorite movie, something she wanted to share with him. Taking her hand, he placed it in his hair.
Letting out a soft laugh, she gently pet and massaged his head. “It’s really ok”
“I’ll make dinner” he offered, wrapping his arms around her waist to hold her close.
“Yeah?” She raised an eyebrow. “Thank you. Can I help?”
“You can sit with me” looking up at her through his long lashes, he felt his heart flutter as he admired her. “You’re so beautiful”
“Thank you, handsome” leaning forward, she kissed his forehead softly. “You’re gonna be up all night though” she teased.
“I always am” he smirked.
If someone had told Jean four years ago about his life today he’d laugh in their face. Leaving a world of darkness for nothing but warm light took all of his courage. When Renee pulled him out he thought it was the end, in reality it was just the beginning of everything.

fence pacific rim au ideas
cause i got the soundtrack on, no pulse will be my walkout song to everything, and its my fav movie, no other reason. ignore the fact fence is east coast based shhhhh...
the irony of the fence in the movie failing is dawning on me now
-Jesse and Seiji are drift compatible partners and are set to graduate top candidates. But then Robert Coste, the top jaeger pilot, his partner goes down so Jesse steps up al la Herc and Chuck style combo.
-Seiji rightfully pissed, being abandoned and all. With the only condolence being stick around and be my backup. He ups and transfers to a new base.
-Seiji peacocks around until Nicholas, a scrappy new pilot with  no experience, shows up. Commence fighting.
-Marshall Sally is like "...gtf in the giant robot." what could go wrong? absolutely everything <3
-Obviously Aiden-Harvard drift duo. Tanner-Kally are supports probs. Eugene if not a pilot, has a like Tendo position. (Cause 1000% he's captain when Harvard graduates.)
-Bobby wants to be a pilot but didnt make it to or through academy. Dante has opinions on the militaristic nationalism that comes with jaegers. and i do too buddy but mf fictional giant robots.
-Other schools are other bases. Each team is comprised of four so like boom.
-uhhhhh whatever else yall can think of. i havent seen the prequels or anime.
this movie is almost ten years old and im still crying on the floor over it <<33 the baselines gdi. the power of friendship makes the robots go vroom
kay thats it.
