Eurovision 2002 - Wrap Up
Tumblr media
That's it for Eurovision 2002 - a smaller year. Despite the shrinking thanks to the smaller budgets available to ETV and the Estonian Government, the production and contest overall exceeded what might have been expected. There are several small changes that resulted in interesting improvements and unearthing a shadier side of the competitions.
Let's start with the songs. 2002 has a reputation problem. For many its seen as one of the worst Eurovision's ever. The winner one of the least loved, many attributing Latvia's win to a gimmick or to block voting (thanks Lithuania!) There are only three songs from 2002 in the songfestival.be 2023 top 500 - the lowest modern ebb. There are some iconic disasters on the small stage and much that is just not memorable. However not only are there gems hidden there, but the national finals as a whole are strong. I was worried going into this that after the trials of 2001 and with 2002's reputation, this would be an ordeal. It wasn't - it felt like the continuation of 2000s national final success resuming after a blip. Lots of variety with some progress from unexpected countries such as Malta. Behind the scenes, Eurovision is getting stronger - even if that's not apparent on the stage on the night.
The EBU, as is their wont, had another couple of voting experiments. One of those, the reverse recap, appeared to have instant positive effects in addressing the running order bias. The other was less successful and resulted in accusations (possibly highly accurate accusations) of vote swapping and rigging. Juries were in the dock when they could so easily be manipulated by those with the desire to. The televote at this stage looked like the answer. Forget diaspora voting, stopping bent juries fixing things was far more important.
Tumblr media
There was more than a couple of trophies to hand out this year for the first time, with the institution of the Marcel Bezençon awards organised by Sweden's head of delegation, Christer Björkman. Mirroring the Festival of Sanremo's additional prizes, there was a new artistic award (won by Sweden...), a new press award (won by France) and a fan award organised by OGAE, which went to often overlooked Finnish entry Laura Voutilainen.
Back to the actual production, and although ETV made the very best of not much money, there were some issues, notably with the organisation of the evening. Every show has chaos going on behind the scenes, however it's rarely visible to the viewing public in the way it was in 2002. The postcards and the interval acts were both a little disappointing and certainly aren't among the ones that are remembered.
Tumblr media
The hosting was an improvement on the previous year even though there were some cringe moments and awkwardness, those were eclipsed by the delightful mid-show song break. Yes, is was mega-cheesy yet it just worked in a way these things so often don't. It pushed the faux romance between hosts to a self-parodying extreme and it still came off as sweet. Well done.
One thing that's still present is relegation. At least this year, the country (Malta) putting lots of money and effort into their national final didn't get relegated as punishment for trying. Finland however weren't so lucky. Their promotion of Laura was extensive, but it didn't pay off and Finland had turned into one of the yo-yo nations of Eurovision. Would they ever be the same competition as Poland or Portugal again?
So, it's possible to host Eurovision on a budget, the running order problem can be fixed, but the EBU still have work to do on this televoting thing and relegation is a bugbear that needs to be resolved. What will 2003 bring?

Eurovision Fact #444:
Tumblr media
More solo artist women have won the Eurovision Song Contest than any other type of act.
Solo act women have won 37 years out of the 67 years the contest has been running. That's about 55% of the total wins. (This is counting Conchita Wurst, and counting Loreen twice for both 2012 and 2023).
Additionally, all four winners of the 1969 contest were solo act women, and Loreen won twice.

Eurovision Song Contest 2002
25 May 2002 | Tallinn, Estonia
Immediately after Estonia won the 2001 Eurovision Song Contest the media began to speculate whether the country would be able to host the competition in 2002, citing a lack of a suitable venue and budgetary concerns. Estonian Television defied the critics though and produced a professional show in Tallinn.
23 countries participated in 2002. Latvia entered the contest after Portugal declined the opportunity to participate. This was a rather peculiar situation, since Latvia ended up winning the whole contest in the end! There was no clear favorite among the 24 countries competing. Sweden, Germany and the host country Estonia were tipped as winners, but it was Marie N (Marija Naumova) who lifted the trophy. [eurovision.tv]

Roberto Paci Dalò In Two Worlds
01. Elie 02. Code 03. Files 04. Remix 05. Tallinn
All compositions by Roberto Paci Dalò. 2002 handwritten text a mesostic by John Cage dedicated to Roberto Paci Dalò design Lora Casadei thanks Vincent Delvaux, Andrea Felli, Philippe Franck, Gabriele Frasca, Lab[au], Andres Loo, Maks Surin, Fujui Wang L'Arte dell'Ascolto –a project of Giardini Pensili produced by Roberto Paci Dalò © 2004 Roberto Paci Dalò (p) 2004 L'Arte dell'Ascolto In Two Worlds backstage
The title comes from a mesostic John Cage wrote after concert I gave in New York City at the Experimental Intermedia Foundation A great venue - directed by composer Phill Niblock - which is still keeping the "loft" atmosphere of the 60's. John came to the concert and few days later we met in his flat. At that occasion he gave me this mesostic which obviously is one of the most important (very few) things I own! Elie is dedicated to cellist/composer/conductor Jean-Paul Dessy's son. I created the piece in my former studio in Rome in may 2002. Code, Files, Remix originally are one single composition commissioned by the Netdays Festival in Brussels 2002. Philippe Franck and Vincent Delvaux / Transcultures proposed to me the making of a sound piece as a collaborative project together with media architects Lab[au] (laboratory for architecture and urbanism) in order to produced an installation in the public space: RE:MAP Instead of dealing solely with my own usual materials, I thought that was probably more interesting to think about other musicians presence at the festival. So I sampled sounds from works by all of them and with this database I created the piece. This installation work has been presented in Brussels next to the Brigittines, a former beautiful little church converted now into a performing arts space. Tallinn has been recorded live in concert in Tallinn (Estonia) in 2002. I've been invited to perform there by a friend: Maksim Surin cult figure of the Estonian scene. I love Estonia and Nordic countries in general and I particularly enjoyed that event. That's why I wanted to include e little excerpt in this first album.
All these pieces have a lot to do with my interested in cities and urban sonic & visual explorations. Kind of environmental pieces dealing with city life. I took the photographs in the CD during a painful and endless night trip by train from Torino to Rome. Everything has been mixed and postproduced at the Giardini Pensili Studio between Rome and the Rimini hills. – RPD L'Arte dell'Ascolto LADA001

On January 10th 2022 an online-conversation with philosopher, essayist, art critic and media theorist Boris Groys took place. During the conversation Boris Groys debated the issues raised by the novel installation Matter, Non-Matter, Anti-Matter which showcases digital models of past exhibitions on a custom-made display, also using Augmented Reality. The conversation was moderated by Corina L. Apostol, curator at Tallinn Art Hall, and artist and writer Kristaps Ancāns. The conversation centred around the AR interpretation of the artworks Project for the modification of a monument from the Communist era (1999, computer-assisted drawing, 28 × 21.6 cm, private collection) and Untitled Installation (Statue Dangling from a Crane) (2002, communist monument, crane) by Vitaly Komar and Alexander Melamid. The original artworks were first exhibited in the context of the exhibition Iconoclash. Beyond the Image Wars in Science, Religion and Art that took place in ZKM | Karlsruhe in 2002. The exhibition Matter, Non-Matter, Anti-Matter. Past Exhibitions as Digital Experiences presented the digital models of two past exhibitions, where AR Statue Dangling from a Crane was on display among many other artworks at the Tallinn Art Hall from 10 November 2021 until 16 January 2022. This exhibition was part of the large-scale cooperation project BEYOND MATTER – Cultural Heritage on the Verge of Virtual Reality, co-funded by the Creative Europe Programme of the European Union and German Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media.

New Post has been published on https://www.tempi-dispari.it/2022/11/08/the-alchemy-project-colpo-di-scena-degli-epica/
Le sette canzoni di “The Alchemy Project” sono state composte e suonate con i seguenti musicisti: 1) The Great Tribulation feat. Fleshgod Apocalypse 2) Wake the World feat. Phil Lanzon (Uriah Heep) & Tommy Karevik (Kamelot) 3) The Final Lullaby feat. Shining 4) Sirens – Of Blood and Water feat. Charlotte Wessels & Myrkur 5) Death is not the End feat. Frank Schiphorst (MaYaN) & Björn “Speed” Strid (Soilwork) 6) Human Devastation feat. Henri Sattler (God Dethroned), Sven de Caluwé (Aborted) 7) The Miner feat. Asim Searah (Damnation Plan), Niilo Sevänen (Insomnium), Roel van Helden (Powerwolf)

Favourite things: North Macedonia

Od nas zavisi  - Karolina Goceva
North Macedonia has had a topsy-turby time at the Eurovision. The popped in and out after their debut until they settled in for the ride and have been in since 2004. The first three years of semi finals were a dream with qualification guaranteed, but the split of semi finals caused problems and only three more qualifiers were seen;  Mojot Svet, Crno I Belo and Proud.
Way back in the beginning was Od nas zavisi and a song that I felt at the time was the best song of Eurovision 2002. It had good sound, a lovely singer and a good presentation. It didn’t do so well in the contest though ending a disappointing 19th. Karolina would return again a few year’s later with Mojot svet which was more successful. I always preferred the first one.

Eurovision 2002 - Number 1 - Daniele Silvestri - "Salirò"
youtube
It's not the winner of Sanremo 2002, but the 14th placed act, though he did win the Mia Martini Critics award for that year. Daniele Silvestri and Salirò (I'll Go Up). It may not have got a big result at Sanremo, but this caught fire with the Italian public after the competition. It was all over Italian radio in the Spring and Summer of 2002 as well as selling very well as a single. The break-out popular hit of the year.
It's a witty and wry tale of having the wind knocked out of your sails in a variety of ways, then getting up and going for it again. It pulses and pumps (lots of pumping) its way through a rollercoaster of experience and ambition until Daniele is just a dot in the distance he's going so high. The entire rhythm and bass of it all is so seductively propulsive, you can't help but enjoy the ride along with Daniele. Luckily he's elegantly soaring going higher and higher with lyrics that make you laugh as well experience a thrill of altitude and speed, before returning to Earth.
It's tremendously addictive. Once I've finished listening to it, I feel like a kid getting off a fairground ride yelling 'Again! Again!' to concerned parents. Daniele's performance is hypnotically insouciant. Whatever his song throws at him, he shrugs and gets back to pumping on up.
This isn't Daniele's first Sanremo, he entered Sanremo Giovani in 1995, then the big show for the first time 1999 with a song that won the award for best lyrics. The textual content of his songs always seem to be a focus, whether its putting his beliefs and positions into an artistic setting or just focusing on the human condition. After 2002 he's entered Sanremo three more times with good results, so I'm sure he'll be gracing this blog again in the future with his song-writing.
Until then, just one more listen

For the ask game: Pluto, Deneb, Gemini, Black Eye Galaxy and Pulsar! (wanted to put one from each category, haha!)
Awww 🥰💖
Pluto: What time is it right now where you are? - 1:02am (aka very late lol)
Deneb: Have you ever been out of your home country? - Yes, a few times. I’ve been to Rhodes, Greece in 2002; Tallinn, Estonia in 2017 and Istanbul, Turkey in 2019 (also made a landing in Amsterdam and spent 5 hours at the airport while waiting for a flight to Turkey). All very nice and memorable experiences, in their own ways.
I’ve also been on a ship plenty of times, the ones that go from Finland to Stockholm, Sweden and back. But I haven’t actually visited Stockholm yet, so I guess that doesn’t really count. :D
Gemini: Favourite song? - I listen to a lot of different bands/artists these days, so it’s hard to pick one... But I guess I’ve been listening to “Rockabye” by Cyan Kicks a lot of lately. Part of the lyrics kind reminded me of Billy & his mom, so it actually made me cry this one night weeks ago, when I already felt tired and kind of depressed too. :/
Black Eye Galaxy: Do you believe in love at first sight? - Yes and no. I’ve heard stories about people who’d fallen in love at first sight, started dating, then got married and stayed together for the rest of their lives. While I remain a little skeptical about those kind of stories, I’d still like to believe that some of them were true. It’s a cute thought, at least.
Pulsar: What do you hope to do in the next 10 years? - Honestly, something that really inspires me and doesn’t completely wear me out after a while. Hoping that something would be my actual job too, not just some silly little hobby of mine. This is a cliché but I’d really like to travel more, see the world, get to know different cultures. Maybe have a house of my own. You know, the usual, boring stuff.
