Beyond the Stars: Mae Jemison’s Odyssey ✨
Tumblr media
Happy Black History Month!
This Black History Month, we spotlight the extraordinary life of Dr. Mae Jemison, the first African American woman to travel in space. Born on October 17, 1956, in Decatur, Alabama, and raised in Chicago, Illinois, Jemison’s journey into the stars is a testament to the power of dreams and determination.
Tumblr media
From an early age, Jemison showed a keen interest in science and space, but noticed the absence of women astronauts. She pursued her passion relentlessly, earning a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Stanford University and an M.D. from Cornell Medical College. Before joining NASA, Jemison was a general practitioner and served in the Peace Corps in Sierra Leone and Liberia, where she managed health care for other volunteers. In 1987, Jemison’s dream became reality when she was selected for NASA’s astronaut program. On September 12, 1992, aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavor on mission STS-47, Jemison became the first African American woman to travel in space, serving as a mission specialist. During her eight-day mission, she conducted experiments on weightlessness and motion sickness, contributing valuable data to the field.
Tumblr media
Jemison’s honors include induction into the National Women’s Hall of Fame, the National Medical Association Hall of Fame, and the Texas Science Hall of Fame, among others. Her story is not just one of breaking barriers in space exploration, but also of inspiring generations to pursue their dreams, regardless of birth and obstacles.

When I last posted my Star Trek speedpaints I got a suggestion for Lily Sloane (Alfre Woodard) from First Contact
I also added Lieutenant Palmer (Dr. Mae Jemison) - Dr. Jemison was invited to cameo on TNG by LeVar Burton. She was the first black woman in space, aboard the Endeavour
I'm still so behind on the new Treks but I recently finished the 2nd season of Disco, and gotta say I kind of love it ^^

Nichelle Nichols Vs. Yvonne Craig
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Propaganda
Nichelle Nichols - (Star Trek) - She speaks for herself. Legendary, iconic, at the forefront of feminism and civil rights in the 60s, she is a triple threat who did so much more. She volunteered from 1977 to promote recruitment diversity within NASA, including some of the first female and ethnic minority astronauts. Martin Luther King Jr. compared her work on Star Trek as a 'vital role model' to the civil rights marches. She refused to be dismissed, fought for visibility and shone whilst doing so. As a woman in stem, and simply a woman she means the world and stars above to me.
Yvonne Craig - (Batman, Star Trek) - 7 year old me didn't know she was a lesbian but she sure knew she liked batgirl

Additional propaganda below the cut
Nichelle Nichols:
She is the original badass babe. She was a black woman in a leading role on TV in the 60s, a trailblazer for black actresses for years to come. She is so beautiful and so awesome.
Tumblr media
she's fantastic. have you seen her? paved the way for black actresses on TV even while her lines and scenes were being cut and improvised the most iconic uhura line in the series. (sulu: "I'll save you, fair maiden!" uhura, pushing him away: "sorry, neither!") she's incredibly talented and it's a crime the show didn't give her more screen time (or make her sing more often because she also has a beautiful voice!)
Tumblr media
“Sorry, neither” in response to “fair maiden” was ad libbed by her. There’s a lot more I could say but what else do you need??
Tumblr media
A sci-fi icon!
Tumblr media
She was such a trailblazer, and Uhura was such an important character for so many people to be able to see on TV. Apparently Mae Jemison (the first African American woman to go into space) cited her as a reason she wanted to become an astronaut. She was just an absolute legend!
Tumblr media
The story of Martin Luther King telling her not to quit Star Trek gives me chills. Representation matters. “Thank you so much, Dr. King. I’m really going to miss my co-stars.” Dr. King's smile, Nichols recalled, vanished from his face. "He said, 'What are you talking about?'" the actress explained. "I told him. He said, 'You cannot,' and so help me, this man practically repeated verbatim what Gene said. He said, 'Don’t you see what this man is doing, who has written this? This is the future. He has established us as we should be seen. 300 years from now, we are here. We are marching. And this is the first step. When we see you, we see ourselves, and we see ourselves as intelligent and beautiful and proud.' He goes on and I’m looking at him and my knees are buckling. I said, 'I…, I…' And he said, 'You turn on your television and the news comes on and you see us marching and peaceful, you see the peaceful civil disobedience, and you see the dogs and see the fire hoses, and we all know they cannot destroy us because we are there in the 23rd Century.'"
Tumblr media
She shared the first interracial kiss on Star Trek, helped propel real life African American women into space-related careers, and looks divine in a mini skirt.

Geometry was so much easier today, but it was basic algebra. I finished it in no time.
Also today we had our impromptu Girl Scout Meeting for World Thinking Day. It was all at my house, even the younger girls in our troop, though they did activities together that made more sense for them, and us older ones, Cadettes and Seniors, we did more discussion based activities. In the end, we all got together and made this really amazing piece of artwork. What was really awesome about it is that H and I are currently working on our Ecology unit, (we use the same curriculum), and so we were able to apply our knowledge from that into what we were discussing about human impacts on the environment and climate change. We had a good time, and it's always fun when we get to have a full troop meeting with all of the levels.
Tasks Completed:
Geometry - Reviewed finding slopes from equations + reviewed writing equations in any form + learned about equations of parallel and perpendicular lines + practice
Lit and Comp II - Reviewed Unit 16-18 vocabulary + read first part of chapter 26 of Emma by Jane Austen + watched a lecture video about descriptive writing + read about descriptive writing + read about the descriptive essay + read models of descriptive paragraphs
Spanish 2 - Copied new vocabulary
Bible I - Read Joshua 15-16
World History - Viewed a map from before WWI + read about the causes of the war + read about the alliances formed before WWI + practice questions
Biology with Lab - Started working on my human impact and animal resiliency assignment
Foundations - Read more about punctuality + read another article showcasing media bias + read "Love is a Fallacy" + cited examples of fallacies from the story
Piano - Practiced for two hours in one hour split sessions
Khan Academy - None today
CLEP - None today
Duolingo - Studied for 15 minutes (Spanish, French, Chinese) + completed daily quests
Reading - Read pages 175-219 of My Dear Henry: A Jekyll & Hyde Remix by Kalynn Bayron
Chores - Put away the dishes + took the trash out
Activities of the Day:
Girl Scouts World Thinking Day special meeting
Personal Bible Study (Zephaniah 3)
Ballet
Pointe
Journal/Mindfulness
-
What I’m Grateful for Today:
I am grateful that I got to see my friends again today because meetings are at my house since we have the extra space, and I am grateful that the younger members of the troop were able to join us today too since they normally have their combined meeting on Saturdays.
Quote of the Day:
Never be limited by other people's limited imaginations.
