highlights of my partner watching dead poets:
the second neil shows up on screen, he hasn’t even spoken yet: “oh that man is gay”
—
“oh i didn’t know robin williams was in this! father figure.”
—
neil and todd meeting: “and they were roommates” 👀
*proceeds to make a kissy noises for the next five minutes whenever anderperry were on screen together*
—
charlie introduces himself: “oh, well, that wasn’t straight.”
—
mr. perry pulls the “you know how much this means to your mother” card: “oh fuck you, you’re one of those guys.”
—
every scene with knox: *cringing* “oh king. no.”
—
meeks and pitts dancing: “oh c’mon now that’s gay. they’re about to kiss.”
—
neil talking about joining the play: “oh he’s going to get his ass beat. he’s going to die.”
(note: he had no idea neil was legitimately going to die, he just knew this was my favorite movie and ethan hawke was in it lol)

I’ve thought about making this post for months now, and finally decided that I wanna mention it
I love fanfictions that keep Neil alive, that have him be saved before the attempt, or doesn’t succeed in his attempt or fanfics where that never even crosses Neil’s mind. I’ve written several fanfics like that.
But we need to remember that Neil’s suicide is such an important part of the story. It is there for a reason and it is important and we shouldn’t ignore it.
His suicide is a part of the story for a reason. It wasn’t added just to hurt the audience, to make them feel more. It is there to make a point. It is there to teach us something. What it teaches you can be a personal thing, but it does teach you something. And we need to remember that

neil calls todd 'bear' btw. the petname originally came from charlie calling todd 'toddy bear' and neil adopted it into his vocabulary after seeing how much todd hated it. neil shortened it to bear after todd shot him the first and only death glare he's ever given after being called toddy bear for the millionth time. todd prefers bear, it's softer, and matches the petname he has for neil– "honey." he's definitely written poetry about it.

THIS SCENE DESTROYS ME.
when todd says that neil’s father killed him, and neil wouldn’t do that. the thing is i don’t think neil ever fully understood how much his friends cared about him and needed him, especially todd. and because neil was so good at hiding how much he was struggling, no one really understood how close he was to giving up his life.
so when todd runs into the snow screaming neil’s name, it hurts more than the actual suicide scene. because neil had already finished grieving himself in a way. in that last conversation with his dad, he had let go and resigned himself to the fact that he would never be able to truly live under his parents’ control, so he was numb and emotionless in when he shot himself.
but todd and the rest of the boys were now left not only with the pain and grief of losing neil, but also feeling lost and bewildered because they never believed that neil was hurting so much that he would actually take his own life.
