ALOHA, FAMERS!

Pack your bags because on the morning of Friday May 27th to the evening of Monday May 30th, Hollywood Fame is going to be in paradise on the beautiful island of Oahu, Hawaii. Please remember, this is a mandatory trip - meaning all celebrities (regardless of hiatus or RA status) must be in attendance. Sometimes called “The Gathering Place,” Oahu certainly lives up to its name. The third largest Hawaiian island is home to the majority of Hawaii’s diverse population, a fusion of East and West cultures rooted in the values and traditions of the Native Hawaiian people. Oahu is a U.S. island in the Central Pacific, part of the Hawaiian island chain and home to the state capital, Honolulu. Highlights of the city include historic Chinatown and the Punchbowl, a crater-turned-cemetery. Waikiki is an iconic beach, dining and nightlife area.

All celebrities will be staying at the luxurious ESPACIO Luxury Resort or otherwise known as ‘the Jewel of Waikiki.’ There are nine luxury suites available, each occupying an entire floor and featuring Italian marble, Moroccan metalwork, and amenities curated to your specific tastes. I love travelling, especially to places that are rich culture and heritage. I haven’t been to Hawaii, nevertheless I will visit this place soon. Hawaii is the number one list on my travel list. I am really obsessed with the beach. We all know that Hawaii is the Aloha state, it comprises a chain of 132 islands. We usually think of the eight main islands when we think of Hawaii. This is not surprising as the other 124 islands only total about 3 square miles in land area. Hawaii is the home of the world's most active volcano, the crater of Kilauea on Volcano. Sandy beaches, towering volcanoes, and plush valleys lure thousands of tourists annually to the current tropical paradise. Hawaii is the foremost ethnically and racially diverse state of any state within the union, a mix that features Caucasians, Americans of Japanese descent, and Polynesians, among others. Native Hawaiians have stayed to many of their customs and traditions despite the influx of non-natives over the years. Hawaii includes beautiful beaches, swimming with sea turtles, adventurous hikes then way more all await us on their amazing islands. Aloha! 

These are some lists of the tourist spots that you need to visit: 

1. 3. The Crouching Lion Hike is a short but difficult hike. The crouching lion trail could be a 4mile loop with an elevation gain of two,000 feet. The elevation gains and losses are near the start and also the end of the trail. the center of the trail is where the harmful knife-like ridges are. to urge there, travel 25 miles on the drive from downtown Honolulu, they recommend wearing shoes rather than sandals, but the trek is worthwhile and offers some stunning views.

Where To buy Fresh Fish To Cook On The North Shore Of Kauai - Hawaii

You have arrived on Kauai and, if you are like most people, you can not wait to barbecue some fresh island fish. Depending on the time of year, you will have a choice of Pacific Blue Marlin, Ahi (yellow fin tuna), Aku (skip jack tuna), Ono (Wahoo), Opah, Sea Bass or, my favorite, Mahi Mahi (dolphin fish or dorado). Most restaurants will offer two, generally Ahi and Mahi Mahi or Ono. But, if you want to buy some to bring home to cook, here are your best options to buy fresh fish between Lihue and Hanalei.

Where to buy fresh fish on Kauai:

Costco

Start with Costco. Just about every day you will have a selection of several kinds of raw fish at the best price on the island. As with most things at Costco, however, the fish is packaged in fairly large quantities. If you are looking to feed four or more - no problem. For two people, you might consider buying a slab of fish, cutting it in half, and freezing one half for another night later in your trip. It will be just as tasty the second night you cook it. Or, cook up the whole piece and use the leftovers for fish tacos or wraps the next night.

Just recently, our Costco set up a sushi chef preparation area where you may also purchase fresh sushi daily.

The Fish Express

While still in Lihue, check out The Fish Express. Located right across the street from Walmart, this busy place has a small variety of raw fish, as well as a large variety of poke, shrimp and other items from the sea. In addition to seafood, they offer cuts of meat. Daily prepared specials are listed on a placard.

Foodland

Most grocery stores on the island will also carry fresh fish. Foodland, in Princeville, generally has quite a good selection (depending on how well the fish are biting). When I am not going to be in Lihue, this is where I buy my fish. They almost always have ahi and marlin. I prefer white fish so I am always on the lookout for Mahi Mahi, Ono, or occasionally Sea Bass. Here one can buy smaller portions to barbecue, fry, or bake. Try coating each serving of fish with olive oil and a combination of panko flakes and finely chopped up macadamia nuts. Then bake at 450 degrees until brown on top. It does not take long to bake and it is so delicious (ono)!

Foodland also features sushi chefs making a variety of fresh sushi for take-out.

The Kilauea Fish Market

Although most people go to this small fish market for prepared food (their fish tacos are the BEST), they do offer a few pieces of high quality fish for you to take home and cook. Located behind the stone building on the left side of Kilauea Road (road to the lighthouse), this popular spot can be quite crowded around lunch time with long wait times. There are a few tables on the covered patio and a couple of picnic tables on the grass where you may "dine in" or wait for your order.

Best Fish Tacos on Kauai

The Dolphin Fish Market

Just down the hill from Princeville, on the way to Hanalei Town, you will first see the Dophin Restaurant on your right, next to the Hanalei River. Around back is the small Dolphin Fish Market where you will find one of the best selections of raw fish on the north shore.

From their website:

"If ‘Take out’ or ‘cook-your-own’ is where you’re at tonight, then there is no better place to start your meal preparation than the Dolphin Fish Market in Hanalei. Cleaned and cut by master fish cutters you are guaranteed to receive the finest cuts in fish or beef, not to mention specialties like Teriyaki Shrimp, Beef Stix, sushi rolls and fresh sashimi, poke salad, ceviche, seafood chowder, organic salad mixes, squaw bread garlic croutons (a delicious snack themselves) and The Dolphin’s homemade salad dressings."

They are proud of their offerings as is suggested by their prices, but some people swear you will not find a better piece of fish.

If you happen to see someone along the side of the road selling fresh fish, that is a great way to get yummy fish at a more reasonable price. A few months ago I was lucky enough to receive an invite to the private party opening of The Rec Room. I wasn’t free to attend, but Sarah was and she had a lot of good things to say about the finger food they had on offer. We were always likely to go visit and check the place out, but her comments pushed it up the list. When her daughter got a gift card for her birthday, plans were made. Games and food in one place? Oh I am very in.

The restaurant part of the Rec Room is called Three10, and is very large. There’s a ton of room, there’s a fairly large stage at the front of the dining area, and TVs everywhere lend a sports bar feel. Diners are given popcorn to nibble while they wait, a nod to the association with Cineplex just down the hall. The menu is an interesting hodgepodge, with bar food and steaks coexisting. There might be just a little too much on there to inspire confidence in any one item, a fear that sadly ended up being confirmed. 

I opened on the skillet chip stack:  tortillas, 4 cheese blend, beer cheese sauce, jalapeños, green onion, cilantro, salsa, sour cream. It was...fine. I opted against adding the pulled chicken, which was a mistake. The dish definitely needed some more substance to be good. The balance of garnish to chip was off, with too much on the top and not enough between the layers. Very difficult to eat this and get consistent bites, which contributed to the decidedly average overall feeling. 

This monster is the mahalo pizza:  bacon and spam crumble, pineapple, red onion, tomato sauce, fresh mozzarella, bbq aioli. I cannot remember being more disappointed with a dish based on the menu description. The bacon was completely overpowered by the spam, to the extent that I wasn’t even sure there was bacon on it. Do you know how hard it is to overpower bacon??? The pineapple was noticeably canned, the bbq “aioli” was just bbq sauce (maybe even store-bough) and the overall combination was just unpleasant. This should have been so good...and wasn’t. 

The meal was at least partially rescued by dessert. I went with the chocolate crunch: dark chocolate custard, cookie crumble, caramel, pretzel bites. I am a sucker for salty-sweet, and pretzel desserts are near the top of my list. The cookies gave a third texture which really elevated the dish. I would go back just for this. As an aside, Sarah and her daughter had the other two desserts on the menu and both were very happy. 

I cannot genuinely recommend the Rec Room. The desserts were great, but nothing else we tried moved the needle. In theory we could have got unlucky with the three different starters and three different entrees we tried...but that seems unlikely. I have so rarely had a non-positive review on here, and I’m not fond of writing them, but I also don’t want to sugar coat things. Go for the dessert.

It was one of the rare nights when Jasper closed the doors early, allowing the employees to enjoy the rest of it with their friends and family. Atem had collapsed onto the couch of the living room once he arrived at the Adorness home, sighing as he placed his mask onto the table.

Alamea and Haidar came running and jumped right on his tummy. They laughed as his breath rushed out, but he didn’t mind too much. He softly laughed along, shifting as they laid on him properly.

“Titoooooooo you’re home early,” Haidar noted, tilting his head curiously.

“Did something happen?” Alamea asked worriedly, brows furrowing.

He smiled fondly, smoothing down their hair. “No, just early closing for the night.” Then he raised his brows. “What have you two munchkins been doing while I was gone?”

Haidar went on a long ramble about him hunting small animals around the town, filled with sound effects and all. Amusingly entertaining, he could be a good storyteller when he grows up, with more cohesive sound effects and storyline. There were times he had to stop the caracal, getting a little lost.

Alamea interrupted too, more than he did. Atem had to laugh at their antics, the cyan-haired girl trying to correct his exaggerations. He remembered back when he and his cousins told their astronomical tales under the dining room table, giggling and interrupting each other.

At least Alamea and Haidar never reached the levels of noise as he and his cousins did back then, they were often shushed, albeit slightly playfully, by the adults. They would stay quiet for a moment before giggling, continuing where they left off.

“And then mommy, papa, and daddy were all like cheering me on because I brought back food for lunch!”

“Actually, mommy stared in horror, papa was trying to not panic, and daddy was trying to calm mommy and papa over it.”

Atem tried to smother his snorts, enjoying the little banter.

“Ay!” Standing near the dining table was Noelani, hands on her hips, but a smile painted her lips. “What did I tell you earlier little fishies?”

“That you’ll let us stay up late!” Haidar exclaimed as he raised his hands in the air.

Alamea pouted as Karawan, Papaya as he liked to call him, came into the room. “That we were supposed to get ready for bed...”

Noelani hummed, pursing her lips to the side. “Nooot quite.”

She nodded once with an affirmative hum. “That’s right. And what are you laying on your ‘Anakala Atem’s tummy? He must be tired, let him rest!”

He laughed at that as Noelani moved to lift up the children. “Aw Nanay Noe, Haida was just telling about his latest hunt.”

She gave a fond eye roll as she picked said caracal in her arms. “Ah yes, he brought back two birds this time.”

Papaya moved to pick up Alamea, a slight smile to his lips. “Well at least it was on the floor this time and all intact.”

Nanay Noe snorted. “Once we get these little monsters into bed, would you like some tea Atem?”

He nodded. “Oo, mahalo.”

He watched them leave the living room and listened as the footsteps faded. A smile spread across his lips, remembering when his older cousins, titos, and titas had to carry all of them to their rooms. They were trying to wriggle away, giggling and screaming because they wanted to stay up to play.

He remembered the fond huffs and rolling of eyes, the playful scoldings too. Though, it seemed it hasn’t escaped him just yet, considering what kind of trouble he and Toci run into. Papa Ira has saved their skins a good couple of times from angry courtiers. Speaking of the doctor, out he comes from his office with a large sigh leaving him.

“Hi papa!”

“Oh, hello Atem…” He did a quick double check, confusion streaking his face. “Atem? I thought— aren’t you suppose to be at the restaurant?”

He shrugged. “Closed early today.” He lifted up his arms, making grabby hands.

The doctor sighed, shoulders sagging a bit before walking towards him, kneeling down to give him hug. Atem wondered when this entire family thing became a thing, when this man took in people like him. It almost seemed like yesterday Papa Ira was cleaning up another cut, checking his bones due to someone else’s accident.

It almost seemed yesterday that this man offered him a place to stay in this home. He could recall the gentle eyes, so very reminiscent of his parents’ own eyes. He remembered their first breakfast, lunch, and dinner together, something he’s been sorely missing ever since he left the caravan.

The energy, the comfort of a family had been missing for about a year and a half, maybe even longer. He can’t remember, it all seemed to blur together. “Atem, poppet, are you alright?” He blinked, feeling a gentle thumb brushing away a tear. Was he crying? He took a glance up to see the concerned face of Papa Ira.

It was when he noticed Nanay Noe and Papaya were in the room, faces changing from curiosity to concern. Nanay moved to sit next to him, while Papaya moved to sit on the other side. They waited for his answer. Nanay was leaning against him, holding his hand; Papa Ira was holding his cheeks, trying to search his eyes; Papaya had a hand on his back, rubbing soothing circles.

Parting his lips, he tried to give an answer, but he instead, bursted into tears. He’s not entirely sure why, but it seemed his heart knew. “H-Home…” he croaked. “D-Danke— no kou… no kou…” He choked on the words as they brought him into a hug. “Home… home, home, home…” he repeated like a broken record, burying his face in Papa Ira’s shoulder.

“Sshh, we got you habibi, it’s okay…”

“We’re here baby…”

“Deep breaths Atem, shhh…”

He shuddered, realizing what it all meant. “Home… thank you for being home…” he murmured.

It was tense… before it all melted away. There were whispers of reassurances, gently caresses of home. They all pressed a kiss to his forehead, each a bit teary. After a moment, the tea was boiling, a song was softly whistled, and a fatherly hold was given.

They wrinkled their nose when he spritzed a bit of the perfume their way. “Ok, that’s a little strong Atem, I liked the other one.”

He laughed. “I figured. How’s the tea? We’re thinking of serving that to the guests too.”

They hummed. “Lovely blend, but ah—” They clicked their tongue. “Seems too much of spring. I think an autumn one would be better.”

There was a shifting of glasses and teacups. “Hm, I think Nanay Noe put something like that in there—”

“Are you replacing your mother Atem?” they joked, grin spreading across their face.

He snorted. “What? Noooo, I could never replace Mama…” His aura turned soft. “I just…” It was a warm orange. “I think I found home Belle…”

Their brows shot up. “Oh?”

He nodded. “It feels… better… I feel like I’m part of something again.”

They smiled. “So the tea and perfume, all them?”

“And a doctor,” he added with a light laugh. “He’s the one who helped start the family. It’s… It’s good...”

“I can tell,” they responded fondly. “It’s good for you, you’re getting there puppy.” A cup was pushed towards them. “But that’s only part of it, you still got a ways to go.” They sipped the new blend, grin hidden behind the cup.

“Still?” He huffed, fondly knowing. “I should’ve guessed.”
