When you left for university three years ago you never wanted to return home, the small town always made you feel claustrophobic. But now you’re sitting on a train, about an hour away from your childhood, the sony walkman you got as a graduation present from high school sat in your lap as you listened to the same nirvana cassette on repeat.
The nerves of being home began to get to you as the familiar views of the old trailer park that sat outside your town came into view. An old pickup truck that adorns the same white and blue paint of your best friend's truck drives down the road that travels along the train tracks and it makes you wonder if it’s him coming to meet you at the station.
“We’ll be arriving at the station within the next five minutes.” The worker smiled at you as she continued down the aisle of seats to tell the other patrons of the cart that the train will be stopping for a couple minutes at your stop before embarking to the next station.
You put your walkman in your pocket so that you aren’t scrambling to gather your things when the train stops. Just as you got your backpack situated the train jolted a little as its breaks screech to a stop.
“Ladies and gentlemen we have reached our next stop.” The worker's voice is drowned out by your music as you stand up and grab your suitcase before hopping out the door with the worker's help in lifting your bag down.
“Thank you!” You call out and wave as the door closes and the train takes off again, no one else got on or off.
“Y/N!” You hear a familiar voice call from behind you, the roar of a diesel engine brings a certain comfort to you that you haven’t felt since you left.
“Gyu!” You call out with a smile on your face, the change in his appearance being more shocking in person than you thought it would be, having only seen him in pictures he sent from the crappy disposable cameras he and his friends like to use. All the work he’s been doing on his family's ranch has paid off as his muscles glisten with dirt and sweat.
“I’ve missed you cherry pop.” He hugs you tightly as you laugh at the nickname he gave you years ago because you always had cherry lollipops on you.
“I’ve.. missed you too.” You choke between laughs and the way he was squeezing you a little too tightly.
“Sorry,” He laughs as he lets you go to grab your suitcase instead. “Are you hungry? It was a long travel day for you.”
“I could eat.” You smile as you take your headphones off to let them rest around your neck as you follow your best friend to his truck that was still running and emitting a gross smell of diesel.
“Great, let’s go to pops diner.” He lifts your suitcase over the side of the truck bed like it was nothing before he opens the door for you to get in. The leather of his seats were warm from his heater that left the cabin toasty unlike the train car you had been sitting in almost all day.
“How are you?” You ask about the owner of the diner who was well into his 70’s at this point, his restaurant having been open for almost five decades at this point.
“He’s doing good, got his hip replaced last summer,” Mingyu shifts the car into drive after he reversed out of the spot he parked at. “Still kickin, Cheols mom still works there too.” The mention of your old childhood playmate makes you smile bittersweetly. The last time you two had talked was before you left for college and he seemed angry about everything in life and he took it out on you leaving a sour taste in your mouth and the lack of communication between the two of you over the past few years.
“That’s nice, how is she doing? I remember last you told me she was in the hospital for something.” Mingyu sighs a little from beside you.
“Yeah she was, took me forever to get anything out of Cheol about it but she’s doing good now. Or so I’ve been told.” Seungcheol had always been hard headed and he’d rather talk about other people's problems than his own so it didn’t surprise you that Mingyu had to dig for some type of answer from him.
“Is she working today? I’d love to see her…” Your voice trailed off as you thought about the lady’s son, who you desperately wanted to see as well but how you left things made you hesitant.
“Not today, she’s off for the weekend.” You nod, mumbling that it’s nice that she takes the weekend for herself.
“I know you and Cheol had some blowout when you left but I’m going to see him later after I drop you off, if you wanna come with you’re more than welcome too.”
“What’re you two doing?” Mingyu was surprised you didn’t immediately shoot down his offer, he thought it would take more convincing.
“We’re going to the river for a bonfire with Jeonghan and Wonwoo.”
“They’re home too?” They had both left for college around the same time you had.
“Yeah, they come home every break they can.. Unlike someone I know.” He laughs lightheartedly. You huff quietly, unsure of how to respond. How do you respond anyways? You never wanted to come back, memories weighed heavy on your heart and the only thing keeping you to your hometown was the friends that resided in it.
“Hey,” Mingyu's voice softens. “I get it, you got out when you saw the chance and I’m proud of you.”
“Thank you.” Your voice was just as soft as you watched the familiar scenery zip by. A nice silence fell between the two of you as he focused on driving, the train station sitting a couple miles out from the town you used to live in.
“The bank sold the house by the way.” Mingyu broke the silence, a nervous sweat settled on his forehead as he broke the news to you.
“About time.” You sigh, another weight you didn’t realize you were holding lifted off your shoulders. “Less for me to deal with now.”
“You’re not upset?” Mingyu looks at you out of the corner of his eye.
“No,” You sit up straighter and begin picking at the hem of your jacket. “My father was a drunk with thousands of dollars of debt he owed the bank so I’m not even surprised they sold it to make back what they lost and then some I’m sure.”
“At least an actual family bought it instead of some corporation.” Mingyu tried to lighten the mood. “They just moved in and they have a newborn and a cute dog that I think you’d like.”
“What kind of dog is it?” You side eye Mingyu, appreciative of the fact he moved on from the sensitive topic so quickly.
“A corgi, they said it’s a black tricolor… Whatever that means.”
“It’s the fur color, it’s mainly black with a little bit of brown and white?”
“Yes! See this is why you went to college, you’re smart as hell.” You shake your head with a smile on your face.
“You’re smart too, Gyu, and not going to college doesn’t affect that.” He shrugs as he slows his speed down after approaching the edge of town.
“If you say so cherry pop.” Just as he pulled up to the first stoplight the roar of a loud engine could be heard from a distance.
“I bet that’s Cheol.” You look at Mingyu confused before your question gets lost once you see the helmet less Seungcheol sped by on a motorcycle you had never seen before, his once dark hair was bleached blonde.
“That’s Cheol?” You asked as you watched him disappear down the opposite street you and Mingyu turned down.
“Yeah, he changed quite a bit since you left.” That was an understatement as Seungcheol looked as big as Mingyu, maybe bigger if you dared to think.
“I can see that, can’t believe he bleached his hair.”
“He did that pretty recently actually, said he needed a change and decided the worst that could happen is his hair would fall out.”
“He’d look good with a buzz cut.” Mingyu laughs at the thought causing you to laugh too.
“You should tell him that tonight when we hang out, I guarantee he’ll either blow a gasket or take you seriously and actually cut his hair off.”
“He would drown me in the river first before he’d listen to me.”
“I don’t know cherry pop, you were very influential to him for a long time. Remember how he did your bidding all throughout elementary school?”
“Yeah cause I tossed him off the merry-go-round at recess and he decided he was scared of me until junior high.”
“I think we were all scared of you after that,” Mingyu puts the car in park after pulling up to the diner. “The older kids wouldn’t mess with me either because you scared them too.” The fact Mingyu is younger than you by two years makes you question reality as he’s much bigger then you now and has been since junior high.
“Still wild to think about.” You laugh as Mingyu hops out the truck to run over and open the door for you, he’s never allowed you to open your own door since he started driving.
“Oh, I guess Cheol’s mom is working today.” Mingyu closes the door behind you and puts the key in the handle to lock it as he stares at the familiar woman through the window that was taking someone’s order. “Someone must’ve called out of work today.”
The two of you walk to the front door together, making small talk about anything and everything. Seungcheol’s mother greeted the two of you with a smile and handed you two menus once you sat down.
“It’s good to see you sweetheart.” She smiles widely at you, she was always like a second mother to you growing up especially after you mothers untimely passing.
“It’s good to see you too, you look great.” You smile warmly, despite any animosity you might feel for her son right now you will never be able to hate this woman.
“I’ll start you two off with some water?” You both nod, prompting her to walk away.
“So how’s the ranch?” You scan the menu, already knowing what you want but wanting to check to see if anything new was added.
“It’s good, Cheol doesn’t work there anymore.” Mingyu doesn’t look up from his menu to see your surprised expression. “Mr. Johnson offered him a job as a mechanic after seeing the work he would do on the farm equipment.”
“Mechanics suit him.” You smile at his mother when she comes back with your waters.
“Do you two know what you want?” You both nod, letting Mingyu order first despite the look he gave you after you shrug and take a big gulp of your water. “Are you getting your usual sweetheart?” She turns to you.
“How do you remember what I used to order?” Your eyes widen.
“You’d order the same thing almost every time you’d come here since you were a kid and I’ve been working here longer than you’ve been alive so I have it practically engraved into my memory.” She laughs quietly as she takes your menus. “You and my son are the same in your consistency in ordering the same thing.”
“Oh.” You could feel your face heating up at the thought. You’re happy she didn’t bother to push a conversation as she went to help more people that came in.
“You and Cheol are as opposite as opposite can be.”
“You don’t say.” You roll your eyes playfully.
The banter between you and Mingyu continued on, even after your food came you both found something to poke — and trust me there was a lot to poke at that has happened over the past three years that couldn’t be conveyed over letters and the occasional call here and there.
“We should head out now, get you to the ranch so you can clean up and rest before tonight.” Mingyu paid for your guy's food like the gentleman he is and held the door open for you as you walked out into the warm summer air.
“Am I obligated to go swimming tonight?” Mingyu shakes his head.
“You’re not but we’ll all be swimming so,” He hops into the truck after opening the door for you. “Just to be safe you might wanna wear your swimsuit.”
“Got it.” You nod your head before watching out the window again, committing your old hometown to memory again. The drive to the ranch was peaceful and long, sitting a few miles out of town on the opposite side of where the diner was.
Once you got to Mingyu's house and greeted his family and caught up, you went to the spare room upstairs to unload your bags and lay on the bed to unwind. A quick nap was sure to help the oncoming headache you got so after changing your clothes to be a little more comfortable you crawl under the freshly cleaned blanket and almost instantly knock out.
A couple hours pass by before Mingyu is knocking on the door to wake you up, telling you the guys are heading to the river now and that you two need to get going soon.
Groaning quietly as you sit up in bed and stretch, it felt nice to not have to worry about anything as this is the first summer you decided to not take summer classes as you'd be graduating early after this upcoming fall semester. Getting up and taking your walkman out of your bag again you took out the nirvana cassette and put in green day instead, the music more uplifting and giving you an ounce of energy to put your swimsuit on and a pair of shorts and jacket to cover yourself.
“How was your nap dear?” Mingyu's mother greeted you as you walked down the stairs, your friend standing by the door waiting (im)patiently for you.
“Amazing, sitting all day in those train seats takes a toll on your back.” You take your walkman headphones off and half hazardously shove them into your jacket pocket.
“Tell me about it, I can’t sit for too long now without going stiff.” She smiles warmly as she wishes you two well as you b-line to the door after Mingyu told you to hurry up.
“Couldn’t even give me time to say bye.” You grumble as you shuffle up to the truck where Mingyu was holding the door for you.
“Sorry cherry pop, the guys are waiting for us and we still gotta get drinks.”
“Why are we getting the drinks?” You buckle up and put your headphones back on, both of your tastes in music are dramatically different as he puts in a country cassette into the radio.
“You’re home, they want you to get what you want instead of drinking what they like.”
“They still drink that shitty dollar beer right?” Mingyu nods. “Then we drink the same thing, not much has changed as I still couldn’t afford the expensive stuff being at college.”
“Great, that makes this run cheap.” The ride to the corner store was quick, the street lights lining the road leading from the ranch to town making the trees look ominous.
Once you guys had secured the alcohol you made your way to the river. The long body of water stretched for miles outside of town in both directions, and the one spot you guys have always met up at since junior high was hidden away. You had thick bushes to climb through and poison ivy to look out for as it wasn’t a regular site on the river to be at.
“Mingyu! Y/N!” Jeonghan called happily when he saw the two of you emerge from the bushes. The bonfire was already large and roaring while Cheol and Wonwoo were already in the water swimming.
“Hannie!” You smile and hug him happily, he was always the least affectionate person so when he offered you a hug you always took it.
“How have you been? It’s been years!” He pulls away from the hug to greet Mingyu while sitting down in his chair and pats the one next to him that looked to have been occupied by Seungcheol at one point based on the jacket hanging on it.
“I’ve been good, college has been tough but I'm graduating a semester early.” You smile at Mingyu who hands you a beer before he sets the box down and makes quick work to strip down to his swim trunks so he can join the other two in the water. “How have you been?”
“I’ve been great, graduating a semester later than I should've, but I took a light load last semester because I was back and forth to be here for Cheol while his mom was in the hospital.” you nod your head while taking a drink of your beer. You never realized that his mom being in the hospital was that bad.
“Mingyu didn’t tell me much about her being in the hospital so I didn’t realize it was that bad.” You look out at the three guys who are currently climbing the rock in the middle of the river so they can jump into the water.
“He wanted to write to you, ever since you left it’s all he had been beside himself about but when his mother got sick he wanted to write to you even more.” Jeonghans voice was soft, nervous that the said male would hear your two's conversation and start hounding him for spilling the secret.
“I wanted to write him too, but-“
“But you couldn’t, I’m not as hard headed as Seungcheol so I get why but I don’t get why you couldn’t have let him down sooner.” You sigh, this was a conversation you knew you’d have eventually as Jeonghan was Seungcheols best friend outside of you and he was the only one that knew about you two.
“I wanted to, believe me it was never my plan to break things off the day I was leaving but I was selfish and didn’t want to let him go yet.”
“You are selfish,” You laugh quietly, thanking him. “But he’s selfish too, this town holds too many bad memories for you and he wanted to tie you to it when you finally had the chance to escape it.”
“You know, I asked him to come with me.” You took another sip of your beer, your eyes back on the blonde who seemed to feel you staring as he tilted his head back and gave you a bitter smirk. “When I first got the acceptance letter and I was on the fence about going, he wanted me to go but he also wanted me to stay and so I told him to come with me so I didn’t have to choose.”
“He never told me that.” Jeonghan opens up another beer and gingerly takes a sip of it.
“I’m not surprised, I think he thought it was a joke.” You finally tear your eyes off of Seungcheol to look at Jeonghan. “After that I didn’t tell him I committed and just continued to relish our time together.”
“Y’know, he wanted you to go because this was your dream but he wanted to be a part of that dream and you keeping that from him and then cutting ties with him when you left is what broke him.”
“I didn’t mean to.” You mumbled and looked down at your half empty beer can. “He was the one that told me that if I wasn’t willing to make things work then he didn’t want to hear from me.”
“Well he’s dumb,” Jeonghan takes another sip. “But so are you.”
“I know.” You close your eyes and sigh, letting your head lull back on the chair.
“Are you going to talk to him while you’re home? It is the first time you’ve been home since leaving after all.”
“This isn’t my home anymore.” You don’t bother to open your eyes as you take in the warm night air. This hasn’t been your home since you left and it hasn’t felt like home for far longer, the only thing (or person) that made you feel remotely anchored here was Seungcheol.
“It was your home at one point, and I'd argue it still is because Seungcheol and the rest of us are here.”
“Corny loser.” You mumble, a small smile cracking at your lips before you sit up straight. “I’ll talk to him, I promise. I had been prepping myself all week to mend things between us while I was here.”
“Good.” Jeonghan smiles and downs the rest of his beer. “Now hurry up and finish drinking so we can go join them in the water before it gets colder.”
“You’re going to die in that water, it’s too cold for you already.” You laugh before downing the rest of your beer so you can strip down to your swimsuit, making sure not to toss your walkman around too much.
“I’ll manage.” He shrugs after taking his clothes off too before walking cautiously up to the edge of the water. He barely touches it with his big toe and he curses.
“Told you,” You stand beside him and watch his reaction. “You just gotta go in as quick as you can.” You show him how it’s done as you take a deep breath in and hold it as you quickly walk into the water before you’re deep enough to dive under.
“Show off.” He huffs before he follows in your footsteps, cursing the whole way up to his shoulders.
“You did it han,” Wonwoo pats him on the shoulder. “You’re shivering already.”
“It’s fucking cold and you’re all insane.” He huffs and starts to swim around a little, letting the cold water soothe his warm skin.
“I think it feels good.” You had popped back up next to Mingyu who was standing with Seungcheol who was watching Jeonghan worried.
“It does feel good.” Mingyu lets the water support his body as he starts to swim backwards, no longer being a wall between you and the ire of your freshman year of college.
“It’s good to see you Y/N.” Wonwoo gives you a small smile before he also swims away, leaving you and Seungcheol alone and seeing the look on Jeonghan's face in the distance makes you believe that this was planned. He clears his throat when he seems to realize you two are alone.
“Um,” Is all he manages to say before you’re taking a deep breath and turning to look at him.
“Hi Seungcheol.” He flinches at the use of his full name.
“Ouch, hi litt-“ He catches himself using the old nickname he had for you. “Hi Y/N.”
“God I hate this.” You can’t be bothered to hide the fact that the whole situation makes you sad and angry already, you missed him and he was right there in front of you and you were both acting like you wanted nothing to do with each other, which might’ve been true right after you had left but as time went on it faded into longing and anger at oneself.
“You hate this? How do you think I feel?” He crosses his arms and looks down at you.
“Cheol I-“
“I don’t want to hear excuses.”
“Ok asshole I was going to apologize but not anymore.” You roll your eyes and turn away from him so you could swim away, the conversation you had with Jeonghan felt like complete bullshit now.
“Wait,” he grabbed your arm to spin you back around, the water splashing violently at the fast movement. “I’m sorry, for everything.” It was rare that he’d ever apologize and right now it felt out of place as he had no reason to apologize at the moment.
“I practiced how this conversation would go for weeks and this was not one of the ways I accounted for. You weren’t supposed to apologize first.” You look up at Seungcheol who was just staring at you silently now, his hand still holding tightly on your arm. “Seungcheol I-“
“Stop calling me that.”
“Stop interrupting,” You huff, the smallest smile forming on his face “I’m sorry for how I left things and for everything leading up to when I left.”
“Y’know, I spent most of the first year you were gone blaming you, and then I started blaming myself until my mother made me realize that neither of us were to blame and then I spent the remainder of the time just numb.”
“If you stopped blaming me, how come you didn’t write to me?”
“You never wrote to me.” He sounded hurt and you were hurt too but you hated the pain in his voice and it caused you to move closer to him, hoping you could erase even just a hint of it.
“I’m sorry, there was never a time where I didn’t think about writing to you but your words kept playing in my head about how you never wanted to hear from me if I left our relationship behind.”
“It wasn’t much of a relationship then was it, we were just friends exploring each other,” That’s what you liked to tell eachother when you were in denial about your feelings. “I wrote letters, most of them are stamped and sitting in my desk drawer because I couldn’t bring myself to send them.”
“Yet you bought stamps for them?” You raise an eyebrow curiously.
“Yes,” He huffs, trying to hide the ounce of embarrassment he’s feeling. “I’d get these bouts of feelings where I’d want to send them and I’d get all the way to the post office with a stamp on the envelope and the second I’d park I’d back out and go back home only to hide it away with the others.”
“Cheol…”
“I know it’s probably stupid and I’ll just burn them all now since you’re home and-“
“I’m not staying,” You cut him off for some reason. “I mean I’m staying for the summer but I’m going back home to finish my last semester of college so I can get a job at a vet clinic there.”
“That’s ok, this time I promise I will write.”
“You should come with me.” You blurt out like you did all those years ago.
“I can’t leave my mother, she won’t leave this town and with her health fluctuating I just can’t.” He gave you an actual answer this time unlike he did when you were younger.
“I get it, she needs you.. But one day you have to leave this place, don’t you think?” Your hand gently touches his arm as you drift even closer to him.
“I never thought of leaving until you left.” He mumbled as his hands moved to ghost over your sides that were under the water.
“One day?” You sounded hopeful. “Even if we’re old and married to other people do you think you’d still leave?”
“I..” His voice trailed off as your breath got closer to his face. “I’d never marry… unless it was you.” He whispered before he finally kissed you, the weight of what he said disappearing as you both got lost in the taste of each other. After what felt like an eternity you finally pulled away out of breath, a quiet whistle could be heard from behind Seungcheol somewhere and you assumed it had to be Jeonghan since Mingyu would’ve quite literally jumped the two of you.
“Cheol- '' He cuts you off.
“Let's enjoy the night, yeah?” He didn’t want to talk about what he just said, or what the future would hold anymore. It’ll take time, you both realized, for things to go back to normal but for now you were content with how things were because this time he knew what to expect when summer ends, he just hoped that you’d change your mind about long distance relationships. And you hoped he’d change his mind about rotting away in this small town.

“My favorite Millers!”
Your face was beaming, seeing Joel hop out of his truck with Sarah in tow. The truck was still running, the diesel engine chugging louder than any truck you had been in before. Joel always had a nicer, newer truck. He made great money and he was always having to go into construction zones that needed an all terrain vehicle. They always got pretty banged up with dirt and rocks, but he took excellent care of the interior.
Joel grabs both of your bags, taking them to the backseat where Sarah would be crammed in with all the luggage. You give him a nod, silently thanking him. Sarah wraps her arms around your waist, giggling with excitement.
“I’m so happy you’re coming with us! It’s going to be a great weekend,” She explains while you two walk over to the tall truck. You always found climbing into a truck unnatural and awkward yourself, but it was hot watching Joel hop in with ease. You agree with Sarah, all the while opening up the door for yourself. Sarah springs up to her seat, and you struggle to crawl up into the cab. It makes Joel chuckle.
“I’m making you lift me into this thing next time,” you joke, easing back into the fabric seats, “Especially since you think watching me struggle is funny.”
Joel looks back in the rear view to see if Sarah’s paying attention, “‘s no problem at all, darlin’. I will gladly help you next time.”
You knew he was flirting. It makes your stomach bubble with excitement. He makes sure you two are buckled and starts on the two and half hour journey to Houston. Once you leave your neighborhood, Sarah taps your shoulder and holds out her new CD player. It’s purple and covered in sparkly stickers.
“Looks like your Dad is supplying you with all the ways to listen to music,” you observe, glancing over at Joel. He’s just watching the road, one hand on the steering wheel, the other propped up on the shifter. He looks younger, the dusk sky the perfect back drop for his pronounced nose and beautiful eyelashes. You couldn’t help but stare, even as Sarah’s talking your ear off. He just nods along to her, making sure she knows she’s heard.
“Think I’m gonna listen to my Kelly Clarkson CD this time,” Sarah explains, putting her earphones over her voluminous curls, “So don’t try to talk to me!”
You and Joel giggle, shaking your heads at her comment. It’s not like you were the one’s talking before, you both think.
It gives you both a moment without a kid’s ears nearby.
“How was the rest of your work week?” He asks, tapping the shifter to the soft hum of the radio.
“Boring,” You mumble, “Think one of the guys in marketing has a crush on me and he’s making it impossible to avoid him. I can’t even go to the break room without him bothering me.”
You didn’t know why you felt the urge to tell Joel about the situation. It wasn’t even a real situation, it was just an annoying thing happening in your life.
“Hmph,” he ponders for a moment, “Want me to kill him?”
His tone is serious, but you know he’s just messing. You grin, nudging his arm with your elbow gently, ensuring it doesn’t move the steering wheel.
“My hero,” You comment as you watch a smile crack across his face, “No, thank you, though. If it starts to get to stalker status, I will call you.”
“Seems like stalkin’ already, baby girl.”
The nickname makes your stomach flip. You purse your lips, contemplating his words. Sure it was creepy, but the guy was scrawny and you could probably snap him in half with two fingers. He had nothing to really worry about. Right?
Joel steals a glance over at you.
“Maybe, but I’ll handle it.”
You wanted him to think you were strong enough to deal with unwanted attention, but to be honest, you weren’t sure how to say no to most men. You only ever had Tommy and he scared everyone away. Now everyone around town knew you were on the market, and men were drawn to your natural beauty and somewhat sassy attitude.
Little did they know, you were hung up on the other Miller boy.
“You let me know if you need me to talk to him,” He doesn’t take his eyes off the road, just reaches his right hand out to rest on your thigh, “Man to man.”
His hand is so warm, you feel it through your black leggings. He was almost always like a furnace, but it was okay, because you always ran cold. But every time he touched you, you felt that warmth trail up your arms and legs. He made you feel different. Every fiber of your being became electrified when he was around. It was a sensation you never noticed when you were with Tommy. You begin chalking it up to just being nervous because he was older and larger and… well, hotter.
“Again, my hero,” you respond sarcastically, letting your hand rest on top of his. It makes him more confident, gently massaging that area. You watch as his hand creeps closer and closer to the crack between your legs. You practically gasp at the contact, but you catch yourself before you do, remembering there’s a child behind you.
So you smack his hand away, shooting him a glare.
“What are you doing?”
“Nothin’ just… sorry.”
You didn’t want him to pull away, your leg already missing his touch, but you knew what would happen if you did stuff like that in front of Sarah. She’s a teenage girl. She’ll talk. It’ll find it’s way to someone’s ears.
You wanted to act like you didn’t care if Tommy found out, but deep down you knew it would be a disaster. You didn’t feel like being the talk of the town. You didn’t feel like explaining yourself to Tommy. You didn’t feel like watching Joel deal with the flack from his family, especially his mother.
If you two wanted to continue this… game… you would have to keep it secret. That included keeping it away from Sarah’s eyes and ears. You and Joel would just be friends. You would just be her aunt. That’s it.
“Don’t apologize,” You whisper, “Just not here.”
You two let the radio take over the rest of the trip, occasionally chatting about a song or what the newscaster says about the weather. Once you get into Houston, it’s already 8:30 at night. Joel pulls into the parking garage to the Marriot and you already start craving the bed that awaits you inside.
-
“I call the bed near the window!” Sarah throws her stuff down, jumping straight onto one the huge queen size duvet. The room was nice. A large television set catches your eye immediately, proving that this was probably an expensive room if they were giving you free cable tv. The curtains were open, giving a beautiful view of Houston’s skyline.
One thing you notice, too, is the fact that there was only two beds. You knew this, but it still made your stomach sink a bit.
You realize you three hadn’t discussed the sleeping situation. You didn’t care where you would sleep, honestly. You just knew Sarah was a restless one, having slept next to her in a tent when she was 9. Family camping trips entailed you, Tommy, Joel, and Sarah sharing a 6 person tent and being absolutely miserable the whole entire time. Between Tommy’s snores and Sarah practically flailing all around the tent at night, you remember not getting a lick of sleep.
“Go get a shower, Sarah. We will figure out who’s sleeping where.”
She groans at Joel, like usual.
“Dad!”
“Shower,” he throws his bag down on the ground near the dresser, “No arguin’.”
Sarah sulks, her bag in hand, straight to the bathroom by the front door. You don’t say anything. You just start following Joel’s lead by putting your bags down next to his. You stand a bit too close to him, waiting for him to say where you’d be sleeping.
He clears his throat, “I will take the recliner, if you want the bed.”
“Of course I want the bed, but I don’t want you to have to sleep in the recliner.”
It makes him laugh, how matter-of-fact you are.
You hear Sarah start up the shower. You wouldn’t have to fear she hears you and Joel talk about the possibility of sleeping with one another. Again.
“It’s not a big deal,” He explains, unzipping his bags to grab his pajamas, “Sleep on the couch all the time.”
“But you have a nice plush couch,” You gesture towards the hard and structured looking recliner, “That doesn’t look comfortable at all.”
For a girl who didn’t want Joel touching you in the car, you were practically begging him to sleep next to you in the big comfortable hotel bed.
“So, where do you want me to sleep?”
“Just take the bed.”
“But you want the bed.”
You swallow, not even looking up at him, “We both can have the bed.”
He’s silent, gripping onto his sweatpants and t-shirt. He slowly looks down at you, his eyes carry a curious glint in them. You cock your head, giving him a mischievous smirk.
“You and Sarah?”
“No, you and Sarah.”
He groans, “You are a fuckin’ tease.”
You giggle, watching him brush pass you to position himself close to the closet. He opens the closet door, slipping in like he’s looking for something in there.
“What are you doing?”
“Changin’.”
“In the closet?”
He grabs his shirt from the nape of his neck and pulls it off smoothly. You can’t peel your eyes away, partially seeing his right peck from how he’s standing. It was like the morning after having sex with him. Your eyes were glued to him, his tanned skin practically asking to be touched and licked.
You horny bitch.
“Joel, get out of the closet.”
He chuckles, “Why? You want me to give you a show?”
Why yes, I really do, Joel. You think to yourself. You hum a response, peeling your eyes away. You needed to find your pajamas, a pair of Nike sports shorts and a black tank top. Lately, you’ve been sleeping completely naked, but that was obviously not an option here.
Sarah finally leaves the bathroom as soon as Joel slides his pants up. She has her hair wrapped in a towel, which makes you smile. She looked so grown up, it’s hard to believe you met her when she was 6 years old. You wordlessly walk into the bathroom, beginning to change your outfit for your sleep wear. You splash some cold water on your face, your cheeks still blushed from seeing Joel shirtless.
You hear the door outside open and close. You peak out, your traveling clothes wrapped up in your arms. Joel stands in the middle of the room, fiddling with the remote for the TV.
“Where did Sarah go?” You question, packing your clothes back into your duffle.
“She wanted to go get ice from the ice machine,” He grumbles, “Said she wanted to see if any of her teammates were awake or nearby.”
“Is her whole team staying here?”
“Yeah, pretty much every team gets a floor. Last year it was a like a huge sleepover. Fuckin’ nightmare,” Joel mutters, flicking through different channels, before landing on some westerns. You smirk, deciding to plop down on one of the beds. As soon as you lay back, Sarah comes back in, bucket in hand.
“Can I go stay in Amelia’s room? Her mom is there, just two doors down.”
Well that solves the bed problem.
Joel rolls his eyes, you can tell he’s already annoyed. “Is Amelia’s mom okay with that?”
“You want to go talk to her? I promise Dad, we will get up at 5:30 like we need to. Pleas-”
“Let’s go talk to Amelia’s mom.”
You hear them leave the room without saying anything else.
You were tired from a long day at work and the long drive. But some excitement blooms in your stomach when you realize it may just be you and Joel, all alone in a hotel room.
Before you have time to ponder all the wonders that may be in store for you, Joel comes back with a frustrated huff.
“She staying over there?”
“Yeah, Amelia’s mom said it was fine. Then she started askin’ who you were. Guess they saw us in the hotel lobby.”
Your stomach twists, nervous at what his response was.
“And?”
“Told her you were Sarah’s aunt. She gave me a weird look.”
“Great, now the soccer mom’s will be oogling me tomorrow.”
“Well they will anyway,” Joel responds, finding a spot next to you on the edge of the bed, “Single ones won’t leave me alone.”
You know he’s really just seeing if you’ll get jealous. But you don’t play into his little game. You just let out a loud hearty laugh.
“The ladies just love a Miller.”
He grumbles something inaudible, nudging you with his elbow. “You do, don’t ya?”
“Sure do.”
His face softens, his eyes flicking down to your lips.
You grin, “She’s 14 and super goofy. Loves to play socc-”
“You’re truly testin’ me today, ain’t ya?”
You can’t help yourself at that point. The way he’s flirting only gives you more reason to taunt him.
“Is Sarah seriously going to be gone from the room all night?”
“Yeah,” He nods, leaning back on his palms. He acts like he’s watching TV, ignoring your not-so-subtle hints that you want his eyes on you.
“So, I can finally ask you why you think it’s okay to tease me in the car?”
“Don’t know what you’re on about, darlin’,” He smirks, he knows.
You tilt your head to the side, finally lifting your hand onto his lap. You immediately start toying with him the same way, your hand creeping towards his crotch. His eyes peel away from the TV. He watches you closely, his eyes trailing from your gaze down to your fingers dancing on his pant leg.
“You put your hand on my thigh and started inching closer and cl-“
“Are you tryin’ to make a point or pose a question?”
He was getting annoyed with the games already. But you’d only just begun.
“I’m just trying to explain how you can’t do things like that to me in front of Sarah,” You remark, flicking your eyelashes up to his glare, “Especially when you can’t finish it.”
“Who said I ain’t gonna?”
You huff, “Well here we are, all alone in a hotel room. No kiddo in sight. Still not touching me.”
“Don’t think you deserve it cause you’re a tease.”
“How am I a tease, Miller?”
“You exist and that’s enough. Walkin’ around in a tank top,” He gestures to your chest, “Just beggin’ to be touched.”
Your skin is set alight. The words go straight to your core.
“Joel-“
You’re cut off. His hands work quickly, pulling you by the nape of your neck, right to his eager lips. You begin to realize you had been longing for this moment for so long. He couldn’t resist anymore, his whole body buzzing at the fact that he finally has you again.
His lips are soft and slow as they make their way around yours. His hands eventually trail down to your butt, his hands cradling both cheeks. He lifts you forward, sliding you up and onto his lap.
“Been wantin’ this for months, baby.”
Butterflies erupt in the pit of your tummy. You can feel them travel up to your chest as you look down at him, his eyelids heavy and his lips pursed.
He waited for you to respond to his calls, knowing you needed time. He needed to be patient. You would come around, he knew it. After months, here you are.
He thinks back to every time he was touching himself late at night, he would imagine the night you two shared. Your soft curves and needy dripping pussy. It drove him wild imagining you like this again.
“I think it’s been more than wantin’, Joel,” You grind down on his prominent bulge growing in his sweatpants, “Think you need it.”
He grins, finally getting out of his own head.
“Such a little tease, damn it.”
You lean down, mindlessly speckling kisses behind his ear and neck. Your boobs rest right in front of his face, and you’re right, he needs it. His hands leave your behind, reaching up to the straps of your tank top. He tugs them down your biceps, allowing your cleavage to spill out more.
Your hands find his dark peppered curls at the nape of his neck, pulling downward. You needed him closer and he obliged. He starts to kiss your collarbones, wandering down to the swell of your breasts. You can feel yourself staining your sports shorts with anticipation.
You rock your hips, craving more. He takes the hint, reaching back down to lift you from your ass. He switches spots, laying you on your back on the plush white duvet. He’s leaning over you now, which gives you a great view of how spent he looks already. His gray sweatpants are hanging lower, tenting where his cock has grown hard.
He smirks, taking off his shirt the same way he did earlier. With one hand, it slips right over his head and onto the floor.
“Jesus,” You huff out, using the time to remove your top, “I need you, Joel.”
The smirk never leaves his lips. He leans down, pushing your legs apart with his pointer and middle finger. You open up for him, wanting nothing more for him to dive into you in every possible way. You watch as he slides his fingers up your thigh, past the openings of your shorts.
He realizes you aren’t wearing underwear. He sighs as he swipes the pads of his fingers across your wet slit.
“I know you do,” He drawls, watching you writhe under his touch, “You need me as much as I need you.”
He practically tears off your shorts, not wasting any time fighting with the fabric.
You adjust how your laying to accommodate him laying between your thighs. He lays down on his stomach, bringing your hips close to his mouth. You watch as he kisses your inner thighs, his breath hot fanning against your skin.
You remember the last time you were in this position. You spent night after night remembering the best head you’ve ever gotten, from the one and only, Joel Miller. And you could tell Joel was not going to go another moment without making you cum on his tongue.
When his tongue hits the top of your slit, you whine at the contact. He presses his face in, diving deeping into your lips. As soon as he finds your clit, he puts all his attention there. His nose is pressed against your mound as he hums against your sensitive bud.
“Joel,” You cry, reaching down between your legs to grab the crown of his head, your hands lacing into his locks, “Right fuckin’ there.”
He continues his movements, only increasing in speed in which he flicks his tongue. He wraps his lips over the swollen area, sucking and lapping your sweetness. He pulls away, the slick between your thighs missing him instantly. He brings his fingers up to his mouth and wets them with saliva. He glances up at your completely dazed face.
“‘M gonna fuck you with my fingers first,” His voice is deep and hushed, “Make you cum. You gonna cum for me like a good girl?”
You don’t even know where it comes from. But you say it with your chest.
“Yes, Daddy.”
You never expected the moan to come out of his mouth. It’s deep and guttural. He couldn’t believe his ears, and he can’t believe the words came from your mouth. His good girl? That fuckin’ flithy?
He slips his fingers into you without resistance. His mouth finds it’s way back to your core, fucking you in unison.
You reach up to your chest, cradling your own boobs. Joel’s still only in sweatpants but they are riding low on his hips. As he’s giving you his all, he’s grinding his hips into the bed, trying to get whatever friction he can. Watching the motion alone is driving you wild, sending your hips rotating on his tongue. You knew the release was coming, you could feel it in your fingertips.
And when it comes, it’s like fireworks inside your stomach and chest. You lurch forward, crying out his name. You knew it was probably way too loud for the thin hotel walls, but you couldn’t help yourself. The orgasm sends stars speckling across your vision.
Joel fucks you through the comedown. You are the hottest thing he’s ever laid eyes on, he thinks. When your body rests back, you’re panting, trying to ground yourself for a second. Joel pulls his fingers out and sucks each digit.
“You’re gonna be the death of me,” You mewl, reaching out for him. You just need to touch him.
He shimmies his sweatpants down and off his legs. He’s sitting back on his knees, smiling down at your desperate eyes. He crawls on top of you, his dick prodding at your thighs. He leans down, trapping your lips into another longing kiss. His hands trail down your sides, leaving goosebumps in their wake. He pulls back after a couple seconds, gazing into your eyes.
“You still on that birth control?”
You hum in response.
“Need me to pull out still?”
You smirk, lacing your arms around his shoulders, “No. Need you to cum inside me.”
He shakes his head, sitting back to line himself with your entrance.
“My dirty girl,” He runs his cock head between your swollen red lips, triggering your hips to move closer to him, “You drive me insane.”
“Come on, Joel. I’ve been waiting for ages for you to fuck me. Need you. Now.”
He chuckles darkly, still not giving you what you want. “Waiting ages, huh?”
“Joelllll,” You beg, smacking his chest, “Please.”
“Mmm,” He pushes forward just enough to relieve your ache, “Love it when you beg for it.”
He practically splits you open when he snaps his hips. You both groan simultaneously, unable to hold back this sick fantasy you’re both playing into. You feel more full than you ever did before. You don’t remember it hurting this good.
“Holy fuck,” you whine, “So fucking full, Joel.”
He slowly pulls back, “You tell me if it’s too much, ‘kay?”
You shake your head, throwing your head back as he sets a cautious pace. He’s watching all your facial expressions, making sure he’s not hurting you. You wince when he starts to pick up the pace, which causes him to halt completely.
“No,” You plead, “More. Faster. Please, just please.”
He says nothing, just pushes up your thighs so the back of them are flush with the front of his. He leans over you, his elbows on each side of your head. He grinds into you while his dark curls fall into your face. You tilt your head up, finding the crook of his neck again.
His cock felt so good dragging in out of you. You felt like you could stay in this position forever. You molded so perfectly around him. He treated you like this beautiful mural, taking his time with delicate strokes. His hands wrapped around the back of your head, holding you in the curve of his body.
You latch your lips onto his neck, peppering lovebites everywhere. You didn’t even think about if they could be seen later. In the moment, you only thought of him as yours. He was yours and everyone would fucking know it.
He’s starting to get more greedy. He pulls back, his warmth moving away from your perked up nipples. His upper body the best view you could get, so you couldn’t complain too much. He grabs behind your knees, using them as leverage as he starts to pound into you.
Your eyes meet and for fuck’s sake, he’s perfect. You never knew you could see Joel Miller like this. Like someone who fucked you so good, but also cared so tenderly for you. He wanted to see you in the throws of pleasure, not even worrying about when he’d get his rocks off. He got his rise out of seeing how much you enjoyed yourself.
His ravenous drive to bring you to the edge is causing the headboard to slam against the wall which each stroke. He brings his left hand up to your bouncing tits, grabbing your nipple and tugging on it. He knew what touching your boobs did to you. He remembers watching your visceral reactions to him toying with them before. It brings a smile to his face.
“I’m gonna-”
You don’t even finish your sentence, you just gasp as you feel his cock head hit the deepest parts of you. A place no other man has made it to.
“I don’t want anyone else,” He musters out, his teeth clenching as your pussy restricts around him. He means it. He may be drunk on you, but he feels those words down to his bones. “I only ever want this.”
It was never just about the sex. Joel cared for you. Fuck, maybe he even loved you.
You swallow, propping yourself up on your elbows. You glance down, watching his cock slip so perfectly, in and out of you.
“I’m yours, Joel,” You manage to peep out before the orgasm you’ve been holding back builds to a maddening point, “I’m yours.”
The words make his cock twitch. He can’t help himself, he needs you to cum right this very moment. He doesn’t say anything, just unhooks your legs and uses his right hand to put pressure on your clit. Tears start to prick in your eyes as he lazily rubs circles, humming in satisfaction. He feels you tightening up, he knows your close.
Your vision goes white. You body starts to vibrate, the pure bliss he’s sending you into takes you to a whole other dimension. You want more. More. More. More.
As he watches you seize up, he can’t resist his own orgasm. The explosion sends him into a moaning mess. He fucks into you, painting your walls with his cum, not letting a drop go to waste.
He collapses on top of you. You don’t even care, you feel like jello anyway, he could melt right into you.
He rolls off after a minute.
You always miss him when he’s not near you.
You stare at the ceiling, pondering the right words to say to him. Nothing comes to mind. He gets up, walking naked to the bathroom. He grabs a rag from the shelf above the toilet, running it under some warm water.
When he returns, you let him clean all around your body. You make sure he doesn’t wipe away the wet kisses he left all over you, though.
“You okay?”
You finally look at him.
You want to say yes, because you were okay. Physically. But your heart wanted to pulsate out of your chest.
“I will be,” You state simply, “Just tired.”
He slowly starts grabbing all your articles of clothing off the floor, dressing you once he collects all of them. He’s careful with you. Gentle.
“Do you want to sleep in the same bed?”
The question rings in your ears. Of course you did.
“As long as you get up at the ass crack of dawn and move before Sarah comes in.”
He chuckles, pulling his sweatpants back over his waist. He doesn’t even bother to put on his shirt.
“Will do, baby.”
-
When you wake up, you realize the overheard light flickered on. You contort your sleep dazed body, Joel’s upper body practically laying over you. You try to blink the haze out of your eyes, but your tired mind is completely shocked when you see an outline of a girl.
Shitshitshitshitshit.
You fling your body upward, rattling Joel awake. He’s startled, his arms flinging off of you.
“I knew it!” Her voice is piercing. “I knew it! Holy shit!”
“Sar-”
“Are you two dating? Or are you just… wait, ew!”
She’s rambling, her words clashing together in confusion. Your heart is about to hammer out of your chest.
“Sarah, we aren’t dating,” You declare, your voice shaking.
“But you’re sleeping together?”
You could cut the silence with a sword. It’s so thick and awkward.
A 14 year old girl shouldn’t know you’re sleeping with her Dad. Let alone walk in after you spent all night tangled up in him.
“Sarah,” Joel’s voice is buttery and raspy after he wakes up. You hold the comforter up to your chest. You had your tank top on, but it hangs so low on you, you don’t want to risk anything. “Grab your uniform, get dressed. We can talk about this later.”
“Does Uncle To-”
“Sarah! Stop!”
It scares you since it’s so close to your ear. His voice changes so abruptly, it makes you cringe a bit.
Hearing the question from Sarah’s lips makes you feel queasy. Having the girl who you always considered your niece ask if her uncle knew you were sleeping with her dad... God what a fucking mess.
You watch her storm across the room, grabbing her backpack and race to the bathroom, slamming the door behind her.
Joel groans next to you as he slams back into the plush pillows.
“She will be fine. We will talk about it later,” Joel says under his breath.
You open your mouth but nothing comes out.
You hadn’t thought much of this through. Ever since you and Joel first slept together, you pushed your harbored feelings to the side. Sometimes they creep in, which would send you into a panic. Because deep down, you knew you felt something for Joel. Something you hadn’t felt since you first started dating Tommy. Maybe even ever. It was exciting. He made you feel special. After everything he said to you last night, you knew he possessed some similar emotions and feelings.
You felt crazy for believing this could work.
You knew this would be complicated. Now Sarah is involved. How do you explain these emotions to a child? You don’t.
You think about all the horrible outcomes to this situation. Tommy wanting to fight Joel. His mom never accepting you back into the family. Who knows, maybe Sarah gets so upset at the situation, she never treats you the same again.
But then you think about Joel. How he’s a night and day difference to what Tommy was to you. He wore his emotions on his sleeve. He wanted to protect you. He wanted to take care of you every chance he could.
You start to think back to the times when you were still with Tommy. Joel defended you when you two had a blowout fight. He always made sure to have a watchful eye on you when you all went out to bars. He was even there when you graduated college, giving you a bouquet of beautiful daises he swore up and down Sarah picked out. But you knew the truth. Joel loved daisies. He even had his Mom plant some in his front yard last year.
You were just so scared. You didn’t want to be hurt again. You did not want your feelings to be wrong.
You glance down at him, your back still turned. He could read your face, he knew you were overthinking everything. Your mind was working overtime, trying to muster up some excuse to run away and forget everything that happened between you two. There was nothing normal about this situation.
But fuck, you both really wanted it. So bad. You couldn’t keep lying to yourself.
His hand creeps up your back, resting a reassuring palm on your aching shoulder.
“Stop thinkin’ for a minute,” he whispers, “You don’t need to make any decisions right this minute. We will just take it one second at a time. Ain’t no way ‘m lettin’ you go. I want you here.”
You didn’t know if he meant here in general or in the figurative sense.
He meant it both ways.
Maybe it was crazy, but that feeling was deep in your chest. This palpable inkling that this could evolve into you being his.
This being more than sex? More than a crush?
Being Joel’s sounded like a fever dream.
He wanted nothing more but to wrap you up into his arms, hold you and kiss your head, reassuring you that you two can figure it out together. But instead, Sarah walks out in her soccer uniform, squashing the moment. She stands in front of the bed, finally making eye contact with you.
“You guys gonna get up and watch me kick ass, or are you gonna to lay in bed all day?”
You smile at her. You silently prayed this girl would stay in your life forever.
“I know my answer.”
Joel smiles, “’s go kick some ass.”

So-called motorcylists love to shove their beloved bikes away whenever there's a little bit of snow on the road. That's because motorcyclists are famously concerned with their public perception. They don't want to drive around town with wood screws run through their tires, shrieking profanities at stopped traffic before ripping a perfect 12 'o' clocker and driving across the iced-over multi-use-pathway, comfortable in their knowledge that the police will not and can not follow. Or it's because they don't have heated grips, and their handsies get cold.
Heated steering wheels are the single greatest innovation in cars in the last two hundred years. Unfortunately for me, they hadn't been installed into cars of the age I own. In the late 1970s, the newest innovation in steering wheel comfort was "maybe make them a little smaller, for the ladies." Seems like I was cursed to a lifetime of wondering if my thermostat was seized, freezing to death even through many layers of mittens and work gloves while waiting for the tow truck to arrive and clean up the commuters in front of me.
Of course, Plymouth also didn't equip this car with a lot of other modern features. For instance, liquid-cooled active speed laser and radar jamming was not available. Active pursuit drones pre-programmed with a seek-and-destroy order for all speed cameras were not yet on the market, unless you worked for the CIA. And also the good people of China had not figured out how to make $35 45-millimetre ball-bearing turbochargers capable of adding nearly four hundred horsepower to any engine strong enough to keep its guts on the inside when presented with one medium-sized jet engine's worth of boost. I had to add all those things myself.
Easy, right? Run some wires to a heating element on the steering wheel. There's just one complication: steering wheels turn. If I keep spinning the car left and right, eventually the wire will get tangled up and rip itself out, causing an electrical fire. Admittedly, that will also keep my hands warm, but the walk home after is inconvenient.
The original "engineers" who took a whisky-soaked gander at this car before slapping their secretaries on the ass had a solution, though. In every steering wheel, the horn button has the same problem. Unfortunately for me, the horn hasn't worked in this car since 1983, which complicated my attempts to reuse the wiring.
Ultimately, I came up with what a rocket scientist would call "a compromise." A pair of bolt cutters and a map to the local truck-supply warehouse's storage yard soon provided me with a nifty diesel-fired interior heater, a roaring flame that consumes all and produces enough heat to make toast from three feet away. Ratchet-strapped to the place where the passenger seat used to be, it will keep my fingers warm, as well as my feet and every other part of my body. Sure, it's inconvenient having to continually refill it with stolen farm diesel, and I could have run the exhaust pipe out of the cabin a better way than through the rust hole in the floor. Once you get that heated seat feeling, though, you simply can't go back. If you'll excuse me, I need to get going: if I don't get to work in the next five minutes, my boots will melt again.

THe best part abour being able to have jetback boostars on my body is i can go anywere quicklyconsiderinf i can fly so the problwm is i run on diesel & i have to siphon it from other trucks onthe way there so if i want to have fun in a crazy spot i have to make tons of amokes in the air and giant black clouds which might be fine for the 🌎 world but lots of the time it kills birds wixh is OK considering its able for me to eat them when they fall and im tryinf to fuep my jetpack on the groubd by sucking up tje desal with my tubes I bring with me,i drink like a straw & anyways the big problem: The liberal "Loonie toonz" that run this shit country trying to take away my diesalpowertrucks make it fewer and until theres no more left so how do i power my jet pack? Its going to be harder for me in the future it means i will have to start gently fellating big hairy country boys that run the gases and diesals stations all around the world and make them feel so good and turn the way they moan and sweat and the smells of there body will make me go wild. Well its not a bad thing but lets get real the "Toms and Jerry's" that run this country are well in it for the power and dont give a fuck about the epople who live here since the "Sjw tweetie birds" of the 🌍 world are stopping everyone from getting a bite to eat and a place to call my home im just so siuck of it and guess what there using "Soler Panel/s" to direct control waves directly to your mind to make U get this feeling in youre crotch that just doesnt go away until U develop a liquid in your pants it works on machines it works on animals it works on humen its not very plesant until the part where you feel really good! Fucking cowardly bitches that rule this planet: I Will Do About It🦾

"Telling the in-laws if the baby is a boy or a girl" With Rhett🥹🥹🥹 just imagine how cute it would have been
OH MY GOD!!!!!! This definitely would be so cute and oh so hysterically funny knowing Royal and Cecelia (lol).
Tumblr media
"Alright it's looking pretty good with these two," the nurse announced proudly.
You and Rhett were over the moon to hear it, although you lying on your back in the doctor's office with a probe pressed against your belly, had become more than a common occurrence these days.
"They both look good?" you asked.
"More than good," she chuckled, pointing at the screen. "Hearts are beating perfectly, their little legs and arms are growing really well. Nothing out of the ordinary whatsoever."
You heard Rhett sigh, his face falling in relief as a broad smile appeared. Despite you both having had Hannah previously, the worry of something going wrong had always lingered in the back of his mind, especially after Kayce and Monica had a scare when they had been having Jake.
"And it looks like you're far enough along (y/n) that we can tell if it's gonna be boys, girls or one of each."
"You wanna find out?" you asked, turning your head towards Rhett.
"Why the hell not?" he chuckled.
The nurse gently ran the probe along your belly, pressing just a little bit more into your bump. You and Rhett watched the two little babies moving, you yourself feeling their little kicks inside of you.
"Alright, c'mon you two, show me what you've got," the nurse joked.
"You and your dad will probably hate us if it's two more girls," you laughed.
"Oh God, wait till they're teenagers," Rhett answered, laughing with you.
"Oh here we go," the nurse announced excitedly. "You two ready?"
You and Rhett held your breath as she pointed to the screen, the both of you looking closely before Rhett went wide-eyed with shock.
"NO WAY!!!!" he blurted out. "NO FUCKIN WAY!!!!"
You laughed at his reaction as the nurse printed out the pictures.
"Oh my God (y/n) you are amazing!!" Rhett exclaimed as he kissed you.
*****************
The truck finally pulled in the driveway as Diesel came running ro greet you. Ruby, Cecelia's squished-nose cocker spaniel, came bounding down the porch, begging for scritches as Rhett helped you out of the truck.
"You wanna tell mom and dad or wait?" Rhett asked.
"We'll tell them as soon as we get in the house," you told Rhett. "Amy and Hannah will probably be getting off the bus from school soon since it's a half day."
You and Rhett headed into the house to find Royal and Cecelia who were busy getting the house in order before the girls came home. "How'd it go Grumpy?" Cecelia asked happily, peeling a bunch of carrots for the chicken soup she had been making.
"Perfect, Ma," he answered, hugging his mother. "Twins are perfectly healthy, no issues and the doc said we're good to have'em right here at the house."
"Awesome," Cecelia said. "I'll keep the midwife's kit on hand for when they come."
"We uh.....we did find out something else though," Rhett said with a cheeky grin, putting his arm around your waist.
"Uh oh," Cecelia said.
"Lemme guess," Royal said, putting the gallon of milk away and shutting the fridge. "They've both got little tails and a pair of horns that only show when they've been misbehavin?"
"Hah, very funny Dad," Rhett chuckled.
"Nah really, what'd you two find out?" Royal asked.
"C'mere and we'll show you," you told him.
Royal and Cecelia moved in as Rhett pulled the pictures from his back pocket, pointing to each part of the picture. "Now if ya'll look a little closer you'll see a little something....."
Both his mother and father had to squint a little to see it but it was there, noticeable as it had been on the day that Rhett had been born. Cecelia gasped as her jaw dropped halfway to the floor.
"OH MY GOD!!!" she shrieked excitedly. "Oh my God!! Rhett is it....?"
"Yep," Rhett chuckled.
"Holy shit!" Royal blurted out.
"You ok Dad?" Rhett asked him.
"Oh I'm ok," Royal answered, pushing his cheater glasses back onto his nose. "It's you I'm worried about. You and (y/n) are gonna have some serious troublemakers when they get older."
"How can you tell?" Rhett questioned cheekily.
"Trust me, when your mother and I were havin you, I swore you were trouble the minute ya'll flashed us in that picture," Royal told him.
"And your point is?"
"You're in for it with two of'em son, just sayin."
You and Rhett shared a good laugh, even as his mother and father hugged you both, excited beyond words that your two little boys would soon be making their way into the family.

TF 141 Hybrid AU
Simon ‘Ghost’ Riley x f!oc
Part 5 - The Deep End
Masterlist
TW - blood, violence
It had been an uneventful three days' journey to their drop zone with plenty of time to go over everything they knew about their target site, and time to think about the undeniable tension that was crackling between Lara and Ghost. They sat in the back of the truck winding its way through the chilly mountain forests on the Russian border with Georgia. The air was crisp and fresh, with the scent of the pines around them heavy on the air under the diesel fumes of the truck. Lara kept an eye out of the window, taking in the view of the twisted and narrow valleys and gullies, and the snow capped peaks above.
She stretched as she climbed down from the vehicle after being cooped up for so long. Out of the corner of her eye she noted Ghost watching her movement. Her gear was still a source of contention with him. She wore a flexible bodysuit that covered her from shoulder to knees, and a lightweight tactical vest with pockets and straps for light gear. She was also barefoot which irked him greatly. All this meant she could shift forms without having to worry about removing gear. Now the truck that had brought them to the base of the mountains was pulling away, leaving Lara and Ghost alone in the afternoon light.
“Come on, let’s get away from the road before it gets dark,” Ghost muttered and started pushing into the scrubby undergrowth. Lara breathed in the clean air, scenting for signs of danger and followed with light steps behind Ghost for a few hundred meters until he stopped and radioed in their location. Laswell’s voice on the other end of the radio was an odd comfort.
“We are due another radio check-in in two days time,” Ghost told her as he stowed away the radio so it couldn’t be used to give their location away.
“We’re on our own then,” she observed, feeling quite at peace with the idea.
“Let's get this done. You take point,” Ghost said with a grunt as he hefted his pack onto his back again and secured the straps. Lara checked the straps on own gear and moved ahead of Ghost, ears pricked and alert. They traveled light as the terrain was rough and difficult with steep climbs, and dense forest between them and the target site. The small back that was buckled to her vest held a few supplies and the camera for the op, and was carefully balanced so she could wear it in both forms.
Lara’s task was to get to a position where she could get images of the terrorist site to confirm if the missiles were indeed there. Ghost’s role was protection and support, to make sure she got there and back in one piece, or atleast the intel did.
They pushed on until it started to get dark, when they paused to take on food and water. The plan was to move under cover of darkness and rest during the day to remain concealed. They sat under an outcrop of rock as they rested, and she watched Ghost adjust his NODs.
“Those make you look like a giant bug,” she teased.
“We aren’t all lucky enough to have your skills,” Ghost replied, turning to face her and tilting his head to one side with the lenses down. The reflection of light from the back of her eyes made her face otherworldly and ethereal. He made a show of altering the lenses, covering the fact that he was just staring at her, taking in the shape of her eyes, her jawline, committing it all to memory.
She glanced at him, a smile tugging at the corner of her mouth and her large ears twitching back and forth.
“Is there a problem?” She asked eventually, and he saw the slight wrinkle to her nose as she spoke.
“Nah, just need to get these keyed in before we move,” he replied, smiling warmly under the cover of his balaclava. He knew he was done for now, his chest swelled as she raised her eyebrow, clearly not believing him. “Come on, let’s move.”
They pushed up the side of the mountain, Lara taking point and following the natural lay of the terrain as much as possible. The trees were still dense at this altitude but she picked her path carefully and the going wasn’t too difficult. After a few hours they were well into the landscape far from any tracks or signs of humanity.
A mournful howling echoed through the trees around them, raising the hairs all over Lara’s neck and setting her tail to lashing back and forth, ears tipping backwards.
“Wolves, mangy bloody things,” she screwed up her face in disgust and pity. Their scent, carried on the breeze, stank of disease and decay, the pack had fallen on hard times and were all but finished. “They shouldn’t attack as there are two of us thankfully.”
“Unless they’re desperate, of course,” Ghost countered dryly.
“I was hoping you wouldn’t realize that,” she muttered before moving forward again. “Let’s just try and avoid them just in case, I don’t want to have to fight a pack of wolves if I can avoid it.”
They pushed on up the mountains, the air getting colder as they climbed and snow gleaming on the peaks far above them in the moonlight. As day broke Lara stood at the base of a sheer rock face, hands on hips as she looked for hand holds, her tail curling at the tip as she mapped her climb.
“I reckon I can claw my way up with a rope for you, if you can give me a boost to start with,” she proposed to Ghost.
“Sure,” he nodded in response and shrugged out of his pack, laying a length of rope on the ground beside it before leaning his hands against the wall so she could use his back as a spring board. He spread his legs to give himself a stronger stance and braced for the weight of Lara jumping off his back. But it didn’t happen. After a while he looked back over his shoulder and found was just standing there looking at him.
Lara stood openly admiring Ghost as he stood there, a smirk playing on her lips and her head cocked to one side.
“Sorry, got distracted by the scenery,” she chuckled.
“Keep it tactical, Lara,” he grumbled, glad his mask hid his blush.
“You can’t say anything after stuffing catnip in your pockets before coming to my quarters,” she replied.
“What?” He laughed, standing up straight again. “Is that what that shit was?”
“Seriously? You’re pretending that was an accident, and you didn’t know it was there or the effect it would have on me?”
“No, I didn’t,” he huffed, mind suddenly racing as he tried to work out how something like that would get into his clothes. His jaw clenched as two names came to mind again and again. Soap and Gaz.
“Well, it would have been more polite to just invite me out for a drink, rather than using a cheap trick like that,” she continued, wrapping the rope across her body. “I wouldn’t turn you down if you did, you know?”
Lara felt her mouth suddenly dry as she spoke, her earlier boldness failing her as she saw the piercing look in his eyes. She wasn’t used to feeling like this, certainly not with a human, but he wasn’t exactly a normal man, was he? He behaved so much more like a Hybrid it was confusing at times, and very attractive.
Before he could question her about her admission she shifted into panther form, and sprinted straight at Ghost forcing him to quickly brace against the wall. She heard his grunt as her paws connected with his back and she sprang upwards, claws sparking against the rock face as she scrabbled for purchase. It was treacherous going and she skittered backwards more than once.
Ghost stood at the base of the cliff, heart in his throat as he watched her make her way up the cliff. His head raced at the fact she’d just given him the green light to ask her out as well.
He lost sight of her as she neared the top
The rope unfurled down the rock wall, cracking against the dry stone as it fell and bringing him back to reality. He tugged it to make it was secure and then used it to haul himself up the rock face.
“Let’s find a camp and get some rest,” he said looking her carefully in the eye at the top in the warm daylight.
They reached the site the following morning after another night of climbing through the forest, the stink of unwashed bodies and fuel giving the place away to Lara as they neared its location. The easy banter dried up and withered as the pair cautiously skirted the top of the valley that cradled the collection of buildings.
“Shit, it’s bigger than the satellite images suggested,” she observed.
“Yeah,” Ghost replied. “You’re gonna need to get closer to get the intel we need.”
“Let’s be honest, I need to get in there or I won’t have anything worthwhile.”
Ghost’s gut twisted at her words, but he nodded his agreement.
“We wait for dark then, keep our eyes on the compound while it’s light and get what we can. Then tonight we get you in there to find those missiles.”
The pair made an encampment on an outcrop of rock where they could watch the comings and goings of the terrorists by the daylight, trying to get an idea of where Lara needed to head once it got dark. They lay side by side, hips touching as they watched, sharing the odd quiet observation from time to time. After a few hours they narrowed it down to two large structures that had a constant guard on them, whilst the other builds would be left unattended for periods. There were a few dogs with the guards but Lara assured him that they would need to get quite close before her scent trigger them to respond.
As the sun dropped behind the mountain, Lara prepped her kit, removing as much unnecessary kit as possible until she was left with a combat knife and the slim digital camera tucked into her vest. She stood beside Ghost who was watching her skeptically, the shifting in his eyes betraying the uncomfortable feeling he had for someone going into a mission like this on purpose. Clouds were gathering in the dark sky above, and the weather threatened to turn bad.
“Here goes nothing,” she said, before shifting form and then sitting on her launches beside Ghost. She nudged at his thigh with her head and he instinctively placed his palm between her ears, petting her like a large cat before himself caught himself and pulled away. When she rubbed her head against him again, he took it as a sign that she didn’t mind and crouched down infront of her, stroking the back of her neck as he looked her in the eyes.
“Right, I’m gonna keep watch from here. I know you won’t be able to talk back through the radio but I will keep the line open just incase and let you know if anything changes. You solid?”
She chuffed in response, dipping her head and then turned, loping down the slopes and quickly dropping out of sight.
Lara moved silently through the undergrowth heading towards the edge of the terrorist compound. The patrols were minimal, and there were very few lights around the buildings, providing her with plenty of shadow to slink through. There were trails from the regular passing of small animals that gave her a good route down towards the compound, and the terrorists didn’t bother with a perimeter fence, relying on the walls of the valley to keep people out. But not people like her.
Keeping to the shadows she passed easily through the compound towards the first building, heading towards a stack of boxes that lead up to a damaged section of wall where she planned to squeeze through. As she slowly placed each soft paw, climbing the stack she heard voices inside and slowed as she neared the gap near the roof. Peering inside, ears flat against her head she looked inside and immediately saw the missiles.
The interior was only lit in a limited number of areas, so she was able to move like a shadow and drop quietly  through the gap onto the ground below. Keeping low, she shifted to humanoid and took the photos needed to prove the missiles were here.
Ghost watched through the scope of his rifle, trying to stop the tension building in his neck and shoulders when he watched Lara slip into the building and out of his line of sight. He’d provided overwatch on countless mission, but this time his skin prickled with fear. She emerged from the building after what felt like a lifetime, Ghost barely breathing as he had waited and watched through his scope until he saw her reemerge through the gap under the roof again.
She turned and headed directly towards him again, meaning she had found what she needed and was returning. It took another eternity before he heard a soft chuffing sound, and Lara’s sleek shape appeared below him on the slope. She trotted, panting, straight at him where he lay with his rifle and scope, and her head connected with his mask a hard greeting nudge before throwing herself down beside him to catch her breath.
“Sit rep,” he asked with relief as she shifted form again, just as spot of rain began to fall, heavy and icy cold.
“Intel secured,” she answered pulling out the camera and putting it into a protective bag to keep it safe, and zipping it back into her vest. “Lets get out of here.”
They moved around the lip of the valley, following their own tracks back down the side of the mountain. The clouds blotted out the stars and moon above, plunging them into total darkness as they moved quickly but carefully over the terrain.
Rain came down heavily, icy cold and quickly forming rivulets that rushed down the mountainside around their feet and moved the stones and debris under them. The way down was much faster than the ascent and they soon reached the sheer rock face where their rope remained secured to the top of the cliff.
“This is going to be a shit descent, I’ll go first,” Ghost said over the noise of the rain and water rushing around their feet. Water spilled down the rocks making everything slippery as he grasped the rope and lowered himself over the edge. Part way down he heard a startled yell from above, snapping his eyes up in time to see a sudden deluge of water pour over the side, a flash flood, carrying with it rocks and large pieces of tree.
It hit him with full force, dragging him from the rope and carrying him to the hard ground below before turning him over and over in a suffocating torrent as he was pushed down the slope at a sickening pace. He reached and grabbed for any hand hold he could to stop his uncontrolled tumbling, bouncing off obstacles until he latched onto something solid. Heaving himself against it, he managed to pull himself from the water, coughing and hacking through the fabric of his balaclava until he wrenched it up so he could breathe freely.
“Fuck,” he growled, feeling bruises forming all over him already from the tumbling descent. His NODs were gone, as was his rifle, lost in the flood. He quickly took stock of what gear he had and tried to get bearings on where he was in the pitch darkness. The rain still pelted down heavily, but he couldn’t get much wetter he thought to himself.
There was a sound in the undergrowth to one side, and then the other. Whatever it was, it was tracking him and was keeping close as the rain made it harder to smell him. With a sinking feeling he realised he must be close to the wolves’ den for them to come out in weather like this.
Lightening flickered across the sky and thundered rolled instantly behind it. Ghost switched on the torch secured to his jacket and immediately saw the two sets glowing eyes in the bushes watching him. He pulled his combat knife and waited as the two animals came out of the undergrowth, growling low and menacingly as they approached. He gripped his knife, waiting for one of them to attack and hoping the other would hang back. There was no way he would be able to fight them both off, and firing his gun would draw attention.
A black shape sailed over his head and landed heavily between him and the wolves, snarling dangerously and tailing whipping back and forth. Her challenge was greeted with barks from the two wolves, and she postured more, paw stamping the ground heavily as her back arched. The wolves were too desperate to be put off, and they both attacked.
Lara was slightly bigger and had the advantage but two was still a challenge. As she wrestled with one, Ghost risked grappling with the other as it went for her hind legs and wrestled it away, jaws snapping frantically and feet kicking. He managed to get his knife into its neck, holding it in a bear hug until it stopped moving.
Ghost watched as Lara snapped at the neck of the wolf that sprang on her pack, grasping it as it tried to get its teeth throw her armour and ripping small tears. She managed to grasp its leg, sharp fangs piercing the flesh and pulled it free before tearing into its neck. The wolf fell, bleeding heavily and dying. Lara turned and looked at Ghost in the torchlight before sinking to the ground panting heavily.
“Fuckin’ hell, thought I’d lost you. Come ‘ere, let me look at you,” he knelt down beside Lara who lay beside the dying wolf. Her coat was soaked with rain and she was covered in small cuts, but nothing too deep thanks to the light armour she wore, “Let’s get under cover,” he said, looking back at the wolf den in the rocks, his wet clothes sapping his body heat slowly. Lara limped after him, panting heavily and head hanging low in exhaustion, not having the energy needed to shift form again.
Ghost found the low entrance to the wolves' den which was empty, and moved them inside to recover. Dawn eventually broke but the rain didn’t let up outside the cave, so Ghost risked building a small fire at the rear of the cave, the smoke disappearing into the cracks and crevices of the rock above, so hopefully not giving away their location. They’d managed to avoid detection, but they weren’t safe yet.
The small fire didn’t kick out much heat and Ghost noticed the light rippling on Lara’s wet coat as she shivered where she lay, curled tightly beside him. On an impulse he shifted stiffly with cold limbs and pushed his arm under her, hauling her up onto his thighs by the straps of her gear. She grunted in protest but made no move to fight him as he arranged her on his lap, holding her against his chest, and tucked her paws under his arm, her head against his neck.
“I know,” he said softly as she grumbled, her hot fanning breath against his face and whiskers poking through the fabric of his balaclava, “let’s get you warmed up.” He wrapped his arms around her, cradling her in his lap before the fire and heard her let out a deep groaning sigh. His gloved fingers idly rubbed at her thick neck, and before long he felt the shivering subside. “That better?” He asked quietly, and was answered with a chuff and a nudge of her head against his jaw. “Get some sleep, we need to get moving again soon,” he murmured, fingers still stroking the fur of her neck as he watched the entrance to the cave. He let her rest for an hour, hoping that would be enough but also knowing that it had to be.
“Come on, time to get moving,” he said, waking her up gently.
Lara shifted back to humanoid form in Ghost’s lap, her head still tucked against his neck.
“You okay?” He asked her softly, very aware of her presence in his arms.
“Yeah, just bashed up, nothing’s broken,” he replied, making no move to leave his embrace. He tightened his hold on her slightly, squeezing her against his chest and wishing he didn’t have so much kit between them.
“Good,” he said, at a loss for what else to say as he cradled this amazing woman on his lap. She’d killed a wolf with her bare hands… paws, he corrected himself, after practically falling from a mountain. “We need to get to exfil, I think it’s worth traveling by day now. Let’s get home in one piece, yeah?”
“Sounds good to me, Lieutenant,” she murmured and sat up to look at him. There was dried blood around her mouth where she had fought the wolf, and scratches and bruises on her skin, but her eyes were still bright and focused. He realised she was staring at his mouth, and that his balaclava was still rucked up over his nose.
“You going to let me go?” She asked softly, eyes flicking to his before returning to his lips, the skin tingling under her gaze as his mind wandered and he entertained the idea of kissing her. He swallowed and parted his lips to speak but the way her large pupils dilated as he did stopped stopped him in his tracks. The way she watched him was intoxicating, and the comforting weight of her against him was dangerous, he could lose himself in this beautiful creature so easily.
He ran the tip of his tongue between his lips slowly, purposefully to see her reaction, and his blood stirred when he saw her pupils twitch in response and her body lean slightly closer.
“You’re gonna be the death of me, aren’t you?” He sighed, heart hammering inside his chest as he knew once and for all that their attraction was mutual. She smirked in response, her eyes dancing back and forth between his.
“It would be a good way to go though, wouldn’t it?” She replied, and lightly touched the pad of a clawed finger to his bottom lip. His cock hardened at the contact, and he had no doubt she would be able to feel it where she sat on his lap, but he didn’t care now. Despite the biting cool, and the danger of the situation he felt her begin to pur, the deep vibration rattling through her frame and into his, soothing and alluring.
“Fuckin hell,” he muttered, closing his eyes for a moment.
“What?” She asked in mock innocence, her words curling around her purr.
“We need to get out of here, and when we are back at base you and I are having a long chat,” he told her, hands firmly gripping her as he held onto his self control.
“Okay,” she smiled, the tension between them thick, “it’s a date.” She slipped out of his lap, tail curling back and forth behind her.
They moved out of the cave into the watery morning light, the smell of the forest that much more intense now the rain had stopped falling. Working in a comfortable silence this made their way back down towards the road and Ghost made the call over the radio for exfil. A truck, possibly the same as the one that dropped them off soon arrived, and carried them away.

Daisy & Mavis?
Or maybe Sir Handel & Peter Sam?
Ooooh, Sir Handel and Peter Sam have a fascinating dynamic. However, I don't really have much to say that others haven't already said, and probably said better. To the degree that I'm tempted to talk about their Trauma Responses, I have another ask about Sir Handel & Skarloey, so I think I'll fold these thoughts into that post.
So, Daisy and Mavis — love 'em — only wish they got more screen time!
("Screen" time. Do they ever have a significant interaction in the television series? I really want to be told if they do.)
Actually they only have one page in RWS where they exchange a word. But it's such a good page. Posting it here for the uninitiated:
Tumblr media
Look at this mess. Look at this absolutely perfect bitchfest. There are a total of zero brain cells in this conversation. Venting to your work bestie and and letting loose your inner mean girl. A classic RWS dynamic! It's just the diesel (& the female) version of the Thomas and Percy relationship: They make each other worse.
But, they need each other.
But, they make each other worse...!
Despite their lack of screentime following this, you cannot convince me that these two don't remain peas in a pod, just like 1 and 6 after 6 is transferred to the branch line.
I do think it's rather sad that Mavis is holed up in the quarry. :( There's a real bummer of a line when she appears in a later Christopher story...
Tumblr media
"Besides, she sometimes finds it dull up at the Quarry with no one to talk to but trucks." I know it's realistic, but I want better for her. LET 👏 HER 👏 OUT 👏
Once smartphones became a thing, I like to imagine that they videocalled from the quarry to the carriage shed every night. (Annie, Clarabel, and Henrietta are very understanding about this when the call lasts half an hour. If ever the workers try to indulge Daisy and Mavis with a longer call, however, the coaches start murmuring...)
One great thing about this convo is that it's the first time I feel like I'm really, genuinely looking at lasting steam/diesel coexistence on Sodor's 'big railway.' Coz this is a target Awdry has been trying to hit for at least a dozen books now, yeah? Due mostly to his publishers' pressures, he's been trying to have beloved diesel characters while keeping his 1920-cosplay steam railway too, and this is where I think he finally hits the target. Daisy's first appearance was hamstrung because the turning point where she changes her haughty new-engine attitude and where the others accept her despite all the shit she's already pulled is off-screen, we're just told "they're friends now" and have to be all "right. sure." Probably because he got negative feedback on his Daisy hash, Awdry played it suuuuper safe with BoCo and Bear — less so Bear, but that's another post; for now I will just say that in contrast to Daisy they are presented as very clean-as-a-whistle, and their acceptance by the railway is made so much of that it doesn't feel natural, they both feel like one-offs. But then, ahhh. Now we've got Mavis, and Awdry has the bright idea to let her talk to Daisy, and BANG. Now we're here. This doesn't feel Informed, or starch-and-stiff, or tokenistic. You read this and you're like oh, yeah. Even the sleepiest branch line on this railway is now part dieselised. They're acting like characters! Everybody is acting like squabbling coworkers! It's like sinking at last into a warm relaxing soak. Ahhhhh. Here's the good stuff.
Because they don't need to be Representatives of dieselkind? They can just kinda suck for a moment, without being villains? When TVS subs out Daisy for Diesel, it automatically gives this conversation a sinister air. He's the devil on Mavis's shoulder. But in the original, there's nothing sinister here; it's homey. They're just venting to each other. Their behavior is kinda crappy, but also very normal and recognisable. New work besties fr. They are both three drinks in.
Daisy: He said what to you? Omg babe. I cannot believe that old garden shed said that to youuu.
Mavis: Right?????
Daisy: raising a glass Anything steam engines do, we diesels can do BETTER!
Mavis: hauling herself a bit unsteadily to her feet so that her gesticulation can be its most dramatic and sweeping You are RIGHT and you should SAY IT!
(Narrator: mildly ... Daisy was not right and, being probably the most specialised and least versatile engine then on her railway, she definitely should not have been saying it.)
Tumblr media
(Above: The quintessential moment. Mavis & Daisy are commiserating/carping, and Annie & Clarabel are trying so hard to not hear their shit.)
Now, I've always had a question here...
Did Toby really say that only steam engines can shunt trucks?
The text indicates only that he was annoyed that she kept re-arranging things, they had a tiff, she rejected his input and left.
Then again, the text doesn't reveal that Percy calls Mavis's shunting "a ---- ------ ------ mess!", so, y'know. We get the minimum detail necessary in these stories. ;)
We never see Toby express any such sentiment about diesel engines. I'm inclined to think he never said this — and I suspect we're not supposed to believe he said this, only that Mavis is in stroppy teen mode and exaggerating and embellishing her grievances to the point where she's straight-up making shit up.
Still, I'm not sure. Usually in the RWS if a character is lying they are slyly or explicitly called out for it in the nearby text and this time the claim is just... sitting here.
Ultimately, I don't think he ever said that to her, but (considering how salty everyone on the Ffarquhar line can get: some have quicker fuses than others but they're all so provoke-able) I don't think Mavis just made this up completely. If she were making up stories from whole cloth, that would be... well, that would be 'Devious' Diesel behavior! I suspect, however, that Toby and Percy (comparing notes on her shunting) are at least thinking it, or have said it to each other, and Mavis has picked up on these vibes. All of which would be incredibly realistic.
Anyway, I bring this up because the answer does color my read of this conversation a little. If Mavis is completely making up attitudes that Toby never dreamed of having, and Daisy just eats it up and eggs her on, that makes this conversation somehow even 10x messier (and somehow I'm still rooting for their friendship). If this is a sentiment that is real or implied when Mavis or Daisy annoy the other Ffarquhar engines (and they can both be annoying, no question) then the bond between these two characters, with their very different personalities, just becomes even more 'understandable.'
Anyway, about those differences. Mainly, Daisy is ultimately very conventional. (This reminds me I have a nearly-finished essay about Daisy lying around somewhere. For now...) Mavis is the original, creative one, the mover-and-shaker. All Daisy's initial behaviors, as Hazel observed recently, are things we've seen from proud new engines before! She wants lots of attention, she boasts, she tries her damnedest to get out of work that she thinks is beneath her. What Mavis wants is to improve things, to have more responsibility, to get to stretch her wheels. Furthermore, Daisy by nature is keen to avoid work that's too heavy (she's a railcar with limited pulling power, so, you know, understandable); Mavis doesn't mind work — she just doesn't like being told how to do it, and she doesn't like being bored!
A point where they can be contrasted is in how they accept Toby's help and friendship at the end of their initial... "arcs." (All right, Daisy's "arc" is ended so clumsily that you can barely call it that, but you get me.) I'm not saying Mavis is devious or calculating, but for her Toby's offer of friendship is just as important as a pathway to her getting out of the quarry sometimes as it is for his forgiveness. It is her ticket out. For Daisy, Toby's offer of friendship was important because she wants friends, now she's making a friend yay!! — and I think that was pretty much it. Daisy just wants positive attention; that's what all her 'modern and right-up-to-date' stuff was about, but that failed to get her the positive attention she wanted and it turned out that being a team player did, so she had little trouble re-orienting herself. She resisted the pressure of everyone on the platform for her first train because she clung to the memory of her friend the fitter, but I don't think she's one to resist peer pressure in general, and as time passed and the Ffarquhar line residents became her peers, it was completely inevitable that she start to conform to their ways.
So (although, again, annoyingly — we aren't shown) I reckon that Daisy panicked after Percy's accident when she realized that she would be in trouble too (all right, someone probably had to point it out to her). And so for the first time she pitches in and does some hard work. Toby can't help but own "you did well to get all your half cleared, Daisy" and Daisy's entire system lights up because compliment, baby!!! That's all she ever wanted. She's Toby's man now (so to speak).
I can also easily imagine that, in trying to get adjusted to Mavis, Toby remembered how thing went last time. He must have tried from the first to tell himself, through slightly gritted teeth, "Just find something to compliment the new engine on, just anything. Helps build trust." But he was stymied twice over. 1) She keeps re-arranging the trucks in some crazy-ass unapproved way and he can't find ANYTHING nice to say! 2) It wouldn't have worked, anyway. Mavis wouldn't have been satisfied with just some friendly attention. Mavis wants to do. shit.
Mavis is bright — possibly has little common sense, but she's bright. I do wonder sometimes if her shunting arrangements are actually bad, or if they're just different and Toby and Percy can't adjust. (The text does own that due to the siding arrangements it's inefficient to put the trucks where Toby expects them. She probably does optimize things — from her point of view, anyhow.) Either way, though, here is an active and creative mind at work. Plus, her ploy to slo-o-owly expand her pathway down the line in "Toby's Tightrope" shows long-term planning, which is hardly something we've ever seen any vehicle do! So yeah, she's well above-average bright for an engine.
Hilariously, in Their Own Scene she is easily impressed by Daisy's lofty confidence (another classic RWS dynamic — it's giving Duncan staring amazed at James's boasting), but she's also super young, hasn't been Toby-fied yet, and in short I expect that as the years go by Mavis is likely to see Daisy as less of a role model and more of a crony/partner-in-crime. Daisy might instigate things sometimes — but she needs Mavis and Mavis's bright ideas before she really makes much headway! And I expect Mavis is often the instigator anyway. In her literary-device role of Second Coming of Thomas (Dieselised Flavour), she probably continues to want all sorts of things that engines aren't supposed to pine for (silly stick-in-the-muds!) Daisy is quite content to grumble but put up. Mavis will find a way to make stuff happen.
(Which is the only explanation we're going to get for how Mavis is at large on every quarry and some not-remotely-a-quarry sets on the island, come TVS!)
That was a light rap on the TVS there, but not a very hard knock; at least TVS insisted (in spite of all logic) on using her character for stuff. Christopher lets me down, personally, by finding so little for Mavis to do — and never having her and Daisy interact! I want more of this shit so badly.
However, in the Author's Note of Thomas Comes Home, Daisy apparently has a bee in her bonnet about fans who think the series has no female engines and is like 'me and Mavis tho!!!!!!' Which... I like seeing Daisy mention Mavis. That's all. It assures me that they’re still a duo (although I prefer Wilbert's interpretation that they bond over being The Two Diesels On This Line vs. Christopher's implication that their bond is being The Two Girls On This Line).

Traintober 2023: Day 18 - Blueprints
Crovan's Gate Works is Home to many Blueprints:
Tumblr media
Crovan’s Gate Works is one of, if not the, largest steamworks in the United Kingdom – and the single best equipped. It services steam locomotives from all four of Sodor’s railways, as well as engines from across the country and further. Many of the engines who appeared in the infamous ‘The Great Race’ movie – especially those from Europe – were actually engines being overhauled at Crovan’s Gate when Mattel sent people to do research for the film. The works has machines that can make any part needed for an engine on the Fat Controller’s railway, and beyond – but that’s not all they have.
In a dark, slightly dusty room underneath the main offices, there are filing cabinets. Row upon row of the things which stretch out through the basement. And in these filing cabinets are the blueprints. There are thousands of these blueprints carefully sorted and filed away in this room. Everything from the designs of the A1X Terrier through to the Streamlined Coronation class. It’s all in this one room.
And it was originally the folly of Sir Topham Hatt I, back in 1897.
Tumblr media
When he was the CME of the Tidmouth, Knapford & Elsbridge Light Railway (TK&ELR), Topham Hatt began collecting old blueprints. Some people collect stamps, others collect coins – but Topham collected blueprints. He had already copied many of the Great Western’s blueprints during his time as an apprentice at Swindon Works, and these he kept with new plans sent to him by his friend William Stanier in his office.
When building the TK&ELR Coffee Pot engines, he consulted a huge number of blueprints, trying to find something he could build considering the extremely low amount of resources he was allocated. And he did utilise some ideas from the various blueprints he had acquired – specifically a redrawing of the ‘blueprints’ used for the Novelty from the Rainhill trials… only the blueprints Hatt had were extremely well-drawn fakes, which did a bit of messing with the exhaust system. Topham Hatt mixed these blueprints with several others, but the exhaust system became infamous for spewing out dirty brown water.
This led to Topham Hatt deciding that the best way to avoid such an embarrassment in the future was to get more blueprints. He managed to bargain the blueprints of almost every engine he ever bought into the deal, with one notable exception: Henry.
Tumblr media
Henry was built using stolen blueprints which were muddled and half-right. Hatt never managed to nab the stolen blueprints for himself, which made diagnosing Henry all the more difficult. It was actually Richard Hatt – Topham’s great grandson – who found the formerly stolen blueprints. He managed to find them in a garage sale!
Percy was another engine whose blueprints did not fully arrive with the engine. The warehouse Hatt bought him from had a grand total of around 59% of his original blueprints, with the other 41% being scattered across the West Country, the Midlands and Wales. If you can believe it, Topham Hatt went on the hunt for these blueprints all throughout the 1930s, and was able to snag the last one from the wreck of a bombed house in Cardiff in 1941.
When British Railways was formed in 1948, the now Sir Topham Hatt utilised his new position on the board of the company to gain access to every blueprint British Railways had under its control. Carriages, trucks, engines – even railway adjacent lorries, ships and buses all had blueprints that Sir Topham was able to have copied and sent to Crovan’s Gate. These were all placed in a special room and have been updated since.
Tumblr media
Sir Charles Topham Hatt also added to this collection – but for a very different reason. In the 1960s, as Sodor gained more independence – and more diesels – it became increasingly clear that the island had to repair its engines on its own. To this end, Sir Charles began having copies of engines he bought sent to Sodor so that in the event of repairs, the works at Crovan’s Gate would be able to use the original blueprints before beginning the overhaul, saving time and allowing the workers to know what parts the engine might need. Sir Charles also had updated blueprints of all of his engines drafted, as many of his older engines had been heavily modified since arriving (such as Edward, Henry and Gordon), meaning that new, accurate blueprints were required. The first of these would be Edward’s when he went in for an overhaul after his ‘Exploit’ in 1965.
Today, there are thousands of blueprints kept at Crovan’s Gate Works, with new ones added each year. These are often copies of blueprints for locomotives built outside of the UK, as it is believed that Crovan’s Gate Works has a copy of the designs for every British locomotive, carriage, and wagon to have ever run – bar those which never had blueprints.

Train fact: there once was an engine, attatched to a train...
As my favourite podcast would introduce it:
What, truly, is a train?
In common vernacular, a train is anything that's on rails and, if you're still filled with childlike wonder, anything coal powered that goes choo-choo. If you ask most people, Thomas (of "the tank engine" fame) is a train.
Tumblr media
Thomas is not a train*. He is a locomotive, otherwise known as an engine. A really useful engine we adore, even. But an engine does not a train make. A train is a series of connected rail vehicles*, like coaches, wagons, etc.
Tumblr media
"Every single troublesome truck in one long train" is a train, or if you want to be pedantic, a consist. If Thomas is coupled to them and roped into their shenanigains, he becomes part of the train. This definition is usually all you need.
Tumblr media
Of course, it's not that simple. All dichotomies are false, etc.
Sometimes, a single vehicle is a train, like Daisy here:
Tumblr media
Daisy is independently powered (she has diesel engines that turn her wheels, so she doesn't need a locomotive) and carries passengers. When she's doing that, and said work is listed on the timetable/token system/computer/whatever her railway uses to track operations, she's a train. This logic can also, very occasionally, apply to any given number of locomotives doing Train Things without any cars.
Sometimes- most of the time in modern passenger services- a train has no locomotives at all.
Tumblr media
Diesel and electric multiple units, like the metro train from Splatoon, are made up of multiple independently-powered carriages, all controled by a single driver. In real life, Daisy would normally be operated as part of one of these. Multiple units are fun, because their use means that trains can split. Since all the cars are powered, some of them can be decoupled at a certain station and go off in an entirely different direction, becoming another train. Wild, right?

Tunnel of Love - a Steddie drabble
Steve’s eighteen years old when he visits a carnival for the first time.
It pitches up on the outskirts of town; bright lights and whirling rides and twinkling music, shrieks of delight and clanging of metal. He and some friends, finished with school for the summer, venture towards the gleaming archways and painted boards, barely containing their childlike excitement. They go on near every ride, try every game - fixed as they may be. He and Robin take turns smashing a cartoonish hammer down on a metal plate, he and Jon cast rings over bottle necks, win teddies and toys for the girls.
Evening creeps around them soft and warm, as they head towards the bumper cars, sugar fizzing like glitter through their veins. Steve doesn’t notice the man working the attraction until he’s sitting in his little car, ready to twist and bump and laugh.
“Right pedal means go, left means stop, don’t hit anyone too hard if you can help it.” Steve looks up, takes in a tall, slender guy about his age with waves of dark hair crushed into a knot at the back of his head. He’s bracing one foot against the hood of Steve’s bumper car, leaning his elbow on his knee. The man’s eyes are huge and dark, darker than his hair, and all at once Steve’s breath is swept from his lungs. His heart sets to pounding faster than any ghost train could manage. He’s beautiful. Rugged and sharp-jawed and the tip of his nose is rounded just so, and Steve simply gawks, swallows, nods. “You gonna be alright there, big boy?”
“Y-yeah. alright,” Steve forces out, and then the guy tilts back, shoving at Steve’s car with his booted foot to send it sweeping over the metal plane and out into the arena.
Steve tries to focus on having fun, tries desperately not to whip his head around to catch another glimpse of the man whenever he’s not being actively prevailed upon by Nancy, or Rob. He manages it a couple times, manages to snatch a glance towards him where he stands, a cigarette pinched between two fingers, leaning against the wooden frame of the ticket booth. And each time, the man’s gaze is already waiting for him. Steve forgets to have fun, forgets to breathe between jolts and jerks, and when the cars grind to a halt again, he finds himself leaping up from the low seat and clambering out of the car, heedless of his friends’ confusion.
“What time dyou get off?” Steve asks as he reaches the man’s earshot. He smiles, drops his cigarette to the ground and pushes up from the wall.
“Give me an hour. You been on the Tunnel of Love yet?” The man raises a quizzical eyebrow. Steve’s breath catches at the implication, and he shakes his head. “Meet me there. Lemme show you why it’s got that name.”
Steve parts with his friends, leaving them suspicious but satisfied with his cheerful grin and enthusiastic wave, and waits. He waits by the Tunnel of Love, lulled by the twang and lilt of the music from within, and hopes his man will come. Sure enough, he appears, sauntering through the dust and diesel, the shrieks and shine. Steve feels the thrill of electricity sparking static between them as he nears, as his face splits into a soft smile.
“I didn’t get your name,” Steve states cautiously once he’s close enough.
“You didn’t ask,” the man smirks, taking Steve’s hand and leading him, walking with easy backwards steps, towards the tunnel’s entrance.
“Tell me?” Steve’s voice is light, twinkling like the flickering beams above.
“Eddie. And what’s yours, pretty boy?”
The night slips away, sand through fingertips, and Steve is thrilled, exhilarated by Eddie’s gentle voice and easy touch.
The first time Steve kisses Eddie, it’s under the red-pink glow of tunnel lights, pressed close on a tiny boat fit just about for two. The first time their bodies intertwine, it’s under the silver-white glint of the stars, laid bare on the bed of Eddie’s truck. Over the six weeks that follow, in the comfort and and freedom of summer, they have more first times, more and more; Steve visits the carnival most days, seeks out the smiling kisses and eager hands behind backboards, knowing that each first time draws them closer to the last.
And so it comes.
It comes creeping, with the quiet understanding that this too must pass. Their last kiss is not like their first, not fumbling in semi-darkness or through smile-tight lips, but slow and delicate, as though either one might break if the other presses too hard. Their last kiss says words they never dared speak aloud, speaks apologies for all they’ll never do, chants promises to which neither can remain true.
Steve goes to college in the fall.
The carnival has left town, and with it, the magic. The enchantment is broken, yet the spell remains. Steve studies, parties, comes home for Christmas, but the phantom twinkle of funfair music, the shimmer of lights seems always just out of sight.
All that never was lingers in Steve’s soul, the yearning for a man long gone, one he’ll never see again. Steve tries to move on, tries to forget, but in his dreams, night and day alike, he’s back there again under the stars and the lights, there with the man for whom he fell hard and without reservation. To whom no one ever quite compares.
It’s ten years before the town sees another carnival. Steve’s certain it’s not the same one, not Eddie’s one, but he and Robin visit all the same, for old time’s sake. They arrive just before dusk, when the sky is pink and peach, and the grass begins to sparkle with dew. Steve wanders for a while, knows where he wants to go but fears what he’ll find. Or, what he won’t.
But when robin suggests they take a spin on the bumper cars, Steve simply nods, follows her there. His heart pounds, and he can’t look, can’t focus, can’t breathe. He clambers into a little red car, drops his chin to his chest and attempts to plaster on a joyful smile, when-
“You alright there, big boy?” And there he is. With a couple more tattoos, a little more muscle and a few more crinkles by the corners of his eyes, but there’s Eddie, leaning down as he had all those years before, smiling in that mischievous way Steve used to love. Steve nods, swallows, smiles back.
“Y-yeah. alright,” he whispers, and he knows that now, here, he is.

There is a sort of obsession among a certain kind of car owner with original parts. They want to keep the original engine, no matter how bad things get. They insist upon replacing every busted-ass interior clip, every bit of undertray, the original hood insulation, and even that annoying little spring that flew off into a workshop sometime in the 1970s.
For these folks, "numbers matching" engines are an essential requirement. Any car that's had a new engine thrown into it at the neighbourhood Goodwrench back in the 80s is an abominable, compromised car. They would never do what I do to rebuild a car. My technique is abhorrent to them. What I do is this: I visit the junkyard, find the cheapest motor I think will fit, and then bodge chunks of scrap stolen from the railroad together until it actually fits. Some days, you're lucky if I get an engine of the same make.
All this is to explain why occasionally I have a Soviet tractor engine, or an old mail-truck four-banger, or a small wad of starter motors in an elaborate belt-driven configuration, in the front end of my car. Whatever makes motive power and gets to work: I'm not too picky about "original," because original is what blew up and left the previous owner stranded. I don't owe it anything for being the first one to fuck up.
Now, sure, this does compromise the resale value of my cars a bit. Any collector is going to take a look at a 1978 Plymouth Volare with the approximate mileage of twelve moon missions on it, and decide that the 1976 Slant Six stuck into the engine bay is where all the money leaked out of it. Not at all the old "thin ice" sign that went missing from a nearby lake and is pop-riveted to the floorboard. Not the eight-track player zip-tied into the place where the passenger seat once sat. And certainly, most definitely not, the diesel locomotive turbocharger occupying most of the engine bay.
