quick reminder that 9/11 isn’t only an important date in us history, but also in chilean history as well.
today marks the start of a military dictatorship that ruled chile for 17 years (1973-1990) due to the political intervention of the united states. this period was characterized by blatant human rights violations, with people getting exiled from their own country because of their political beliefs and chileans (of all ages) getting tortured under this military regime.
according to the informe rettig (a comission that investigated the human rights violations during the dictatorship), there is an estimate of 28,259 victims of political prison and torture, 2,298 executed and 1,209 detenidos desaparecidos (people that “went missing” while they were detained by military authorities). these people ranged from figures of political opposition, their relatives, students, indigenous people, immigrants, underage kids, among many others.
despite the fact that the dictatorship of augusto pinochet was over fifty years ago, there are still chilean citizens that do not know what happened to their loved ones that went missing during this time period.

Letter from a daughter to her disappeared-detainee dad. Circa 1973. Chile.
Dear Daddy:
I am sad because you’re not coming, daddy, I love you so so much, I’m waiting for you, because you’re good and not bad. Poor daddy. I remember you so much and I love you more.
Daddy, in school I got good grades and I study very hard, so you don’t have a lazy daughter, mommy says I have to be well-behaved and study a lot so you can come home. Lulu (her sister) and I don’t know why they took our daddy. Our mommy says that when we grow up we will understand, that now we are little and we gotta study.
I love you so much, and when you come back, we’re going out to play, with my sister we can’t be happy because you’re far away, I caught mommy crying, but she says it’s nothing. We are all sad.
A hug and a kiss from your daughter.
Little duck.
Sin perdón ni olvido.

For Argentina today, March 24 is the day of Remembrance for truth and justice. Today we march for the 30,000 brothers and sisters who were disappeared by the military dictatorship.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Thousands of people were kidnapped, tortured and disappeared in clandestine detention centers. Hundreds of newborn babies were kidnapped and sold to families sympathetic to the dictatorship, and to this day they are still being searched for.

This 24th is especially sad because we have a government of deniers that supports the genocidaires, this government gives voice and entity to the horrible people who support the dictatorial regime because we must not forget that it was a civil-military dictatorship. And today, as in the 70s, mothers and grandmothers take to the streets to remember their children, look for their grandchildren and shout for justice.
WE ARE NOT AFRAID AND WE ARE GOING TO GO OUT TO THE STREETS TO SCREAM NEVER AGAIN. THEY ARE 30,000 AND THEY WILL ALWAYS BE REMEMBERED.

I highly recommend everyone to watch argentina 1985, both to learn the harsh and painful history of what happened but also to hear a real story where the people on power who brought great suffering getting what they deserve
(also fun fact for you, videla died on the toilet at some random jail with diarrhea, the death he deserved)
