Land Rover Classic Defender Works V8 Edición Islay

Hey! :) RE: topic of Damian's skin tone, I feel you and other users on it being a hard topic. I agree that Damian's character presents a good opportunity to show diversity. I've noticed though - there are some Tumblr users who get pretty rude about it! Like harshing on fan-artists who don't make random characters "brown enough". Example, HCs aside, any idea why some people think Dick is supposed to be brown or Jason is Latino? I've read a lot of comics over the years and never seen that. :s
oh yeah, attacking fan-artists for it is absolutely terrible, and I hate when I see it. (and I see it all too often) Like one time a person I knew did that to an artist, and was honestly confused as to why the artist defended themselves/attacked her back, it was RIDICULOUS.
Like. Being rude about it to people who have nothing to do with the actual product just makes you a shitty person. So shut the hell up
Edit: Also! I forgot to add - it was mentioned literally like once in a late 90s/early 2000s comic that Dick’s heritage is Romani, so people ran with it, despite the writer being overall disliked/despised. Before that as far as I’m aware he was always assumed/considered white. Jason being Latino or hispanic is mostly just a headcanon as far as I’m aware, but based slightly on some specific panels/instances. Though I’m not 100% on that.

The Once and Future Off-Roader: Land Rover’s Heritage Experience Hypes Its Next Defender
-
Land Rover operates four off-road driving schools in North America—in Asheville, North Carolina; Carmel, California; Manchester, Vermont; and Montebello, Quebec. Each affords opportunities to drive unpaved terrain ranging from moderately difficult to creepy-crawly. The schools are a profitable enterprise that also serves a bigger purpose: selling new vehicles. Participants can use their personal vehicles or pilot a new Land Rover or Range Rover from the school fleets, but this year the parent company put a little spin on the programs, adding vintage Land Rover Defenders to the school inventories.
-
The idea came from Kim McCullough, Jaguar Land Rover vice president of marketing for North America, a serious enthusiast whose résumé includes participation in Italy’s Mille Miglia revival in a personal Jaguar XK120. She saw this Defender Experience program as a way to help promote Land Rover’s impending 70th anniversary in 2018.
-
-
“Since it is the 70th anniversary, we want to help keep it alive,” said McCullough. “We thought, let’s put it out there and build some awareness.” And, of course, with a new Defender anticipated in the not-too-distant future, there’s more to the awareness aspect than touting Land Rover’s history.
-
Active Heritage
-
These Defenders are definitely not new vehicles. The Defender 90s and 110s are parceled out, one per school, for what is called the Land Rover Heritage Program. The numerical designations relate to their 90- and 110-inch wheelbases. The program is run separately from the standard Land Rover Experience, for which the entire Land Rover brand portfolio—Discovery, Discovery Sport, Evoque, Range Rover, and Range Rover Sport, and Velar—is represented.
-
Let us put a finer point on “not new.” Tracing its roots back to the company’s 1948 origins, the Defender (née Series I) went through a half-dozen evolutionary updates before Land Rover punched its ticket on January 29, 2016. By that time, the Defender 90 had been absent from U.S. showrooms for almost 20 years. And the funky four-door 110, with its external roll bars, was in North America for a single model year, 1993, as a limited edition; 509 were sold in the U.S. and 23 in Canada.
-
Like any out-of-production vehicle, especially one as well loved as this, Defenders have become serious collectibles, commanding escalating prices at auction. “We’ve already seen some going for six figures,” said McCullough. Also commanding six figures: a Series 1 restored by the factory.
-
Rare as they may be here, some two million Defenders found their way into customers’ hands worldwide over the vehicle’s 67-year run, and about 75 percent of them are still in use, according to Land Rover. In the end, although sales were still reasonably strong, profitability kept losing altitude because of high labor costs. As a survivor from another era in manufacturing, the Defender’s assembly entailed too much handwork.
-
-
The Quail
-
We signed up with the Land Rover school headquartered at the Quail Lodge in California’s Carmel Valley. Our Defender was a hardtop 90, model year 1996, and it was a testament to the assembly standards of its time. The body panels, for example, are secured by rivets, and panel gaps seem to have been conceived for auxiliary ventilation. External door hinges enhance the Defender’s rugged persona and also allow for easy removal of the doors. Another anachronism is that the Defender requires multiple keys: one for the ignition, one for the side door locks, and a third for the gas cap. The interior is spartan by today’s standards—no touchscreen, no navi, no Wi-Fi, minimalist audio—and our example showed signs of its two decades in service.
-
While this is clearly a blast from the past, we are not talking Fred Flintstone here. There’s a 3.9-liter pushrod V-8 under the hood making 182 horsepower and 232 lb-ft of torque, mated to a five-speed manual transmission. The four-wheel-drive system employs a manually locking center differential and open differentials at both ends. The Defender rides a coil-spring suspension with control arms and anti-roll bars front and rear. Minimum ground clearance is 9.0 inches, maximum fording depth 20.0 inches, maximum forward approach angle is 51 degrees, and maximum departure is 36 degrees—figures that better those of any current Land Rover or Range Rover product you can buy new today. There are disc brakes at all four corners, squeezed by four-piston calipers front and two-pistons rear.
-
While these specs aren’t particularly impressive today, particularly in contrast to a Jeep Wrangler Rubicon, in the context of their times the Defenders were as rough and ready as any. And if the ’96 Defender seems a little dated, consider its distant ancestor. The design for the original Series I Land Rover was derived from that of a World War II Jeep, and it was primordial by today’s standards. The 1.6-liter pushrod four was rated for 50 horsepower, the suspension employed elliptical leaf springs, and concessions to comfort were few.
-
On the other hand, the Series I box section frame was as solid as a bridge, the electrical system was 12 volts—a rarity at the time—and the four-wheel-drive system was similar to that of our ’96 Defender: open diffs, with a manual two-speed transfer case, a manually locking center differential, and a four-speed manual transmission.
-
-
The Carmel Labyrinth
-
Land Rover’s Carmel Valley school involves a labyrinth of trails in the heavily wooded heights above the valley. During the dry summer months, the trails aren’t particularly difficult; occasional patches of deep dust pose the most significant traction challenges, and those are brief.
-
It becomes more interesting in the winter, when rain makes the trails slurpy, but wet weather had not yet arrived when we made our visit in the late fall. Nevertheless, we emerged with a solid respect for this iconic Land Rover. It had a no-nonsense persona, but its off-road fun-to-drive factor was high.
-
“When you’re driving the Defender,” McCullough observed, “you’re involved. When you’re in a manual Defender, you’re more involved.”
-
Accompanied by Justin Demayo, a Monterey-area native who runs Land Rover’s Carmel Valley school and knows every twist and turn of its trails, we buckled up and rolled out of the parking lot and onto dirt.
-
Two decades equate to old age for most vehicles, but our veteran Defender exhibited no geriatric symptoms as we motored up and down the dusty heights above Quail Lodge. The D90 trudged up even the steepest hills with only occasional brief episodes of wheelspin, motored down equally steep downhills at a comfortable crawl, and generally inspired confidence.
-
Suspension compliance was surprisingly benign, on par with a new Discovery we tried for contrast, at least in the dirt (we didn’t exercise the Defender on pavement). And nothing scraped underneath in the deep ruts we encountered from time to time.
-
Demerits? Very minor. The worm-and-roller hydraulic power steering, though surprisingly tactile, was slow by contemporary standards—3.8 turns lock-to-lock. And for a vehicle with a 92.9-inch wheelbase, the 38.4-foot turning circle seemed more appropriate for a World War II landing craft. More than once we had to execute three-point maneuvers to make it around tight turns without scraping timber, turns we made in one pass with the Disco. But that in no way diminished the day.
-
-
The Price of Play
-
Viewed simply as an automotive novelty, the Defender Experience is an entertaining retro trip, albeit an expensive one—$1200 for half a day or $1500 to play all day.
-
But as already suggested, there’s more to this program than lending an historic element to the 70th anniversary season. Land Rover CEO Ralf Speth has already acknowledged that an all-new Defender is on the near horizon. The question is what will it be and when. Speth has been quoted as saying that the new Defender will utilize elements from the current Land Rover hardware inventory and that he has driven the prototype, pronouncing it “even more capable” than its predecessor.
-
Land Rover has also let it be known that the resurrection will entail a trio of Defender models, including a high-performance SVR edition heated up by the Jaguar Land Rover Special Vehicle Operations hot-rod shop. Beyond that, it’s all speculation.
-
-
Defenders of the Faith: We Drive Every Generation of Land Rover Defender
-
Cars Worth Waiting For: 2018 Land Rover Defender
-
1997 Archived Comparison Test: Land Rover Defender 90
-
-
However, it does seem clear that the revivalist Defender will bear little, if any, resemblance to the DC100 concept vehicle that Land Rover displayed at the 2011 Frankfurt auto show. The Defender faithful dismissed that one as wimpy. As McCullough observed, “That’s why we put things out there, to get consumer feedback.”
-
And the Land Rover Heritage Program? “It’s a fun thing to do—keeps the conversation going. And even though it has been 20 years since there’s been a Defender in the U.S., there’s still a core of enthusiast interest.”

Reflection 2
Writing, Literacy, and Discourse
1 October 2020
The author and the audience of literature are the most important factors to consider when analyzing, interpreting, and criticizing literature. Deconstructing and dissecting the “how”s, “why”s, and “who”s of writing all factor into how any individual values the work, and how the broader audience views said work. Historically, literature created with purpose can be used to bring awareness to societal issues and be a tool of progress. This is not the sole purpose of writing; it often reflects the lived experiences of its author, and can be used to educate others or to simply express oneself. It is for all of these purposes, of which written tradition serves, that revision of one’s work is so crucial. With all of these elements considered, literature can have a profound impact on audience and author alike.
For as long as humans have possessed a written language, its primary purpose has been to get a message, any message, across. For African Americans, the works of early black authors such as Frederick Douglass and Ida B. Wells served to demand justice on behalf of the black community (Defending).  In 1893, Wells was able to draw attention to an atrocious lynching and have the gruesome details published both nationally and abroad. From there she was able exploit the British elite's attention to stir moral indignation and heighten “White concern” (Defending 86). All of this intentional use of media allowed Wells to call out Frances Willard, and by extension other white liberals, who applied their liberalism in hypocritical ways that only served to benefit themselves. In conclusion, “her antilynching campaign had not only helped to launch the modern civil rights movement, but it had brought Black women into the forefront of the struggle for Black and women’s rights (Defending 90).” This is just one example of a much larger effort of Black authors to bring awareness to injustices and transgressions against black Americans through the avenue of literature.
Writing has been used to influence public opinion, but it also functions as a way to serve its author. The work of Jamila Lyiscott often explores the intersection of these ideas. In “3 Ways to Speak English” she expounds on what it means to be articulate, specifically in the context of her multicultural background. She is “a tri-lingual orator” (Lyiscott). She reflects on her own experience of switching between her dialects of African American Vernacular English, College English, and an English influenced by her paternal African heritage. We observe how she utilizes each in different contexts, while she also serves to educate the audience about code-switching and multiculturalism. She discusses how, in all three, she maintains her status as “articulate”. Her point is adjacent to that of Geneva Smitherman in her essay “English Teacher, Why You Be Doing the Thangs You Don't Do?” Smitherman argues that the lived experiences of students must be taken into consideration when their work is evaluated by English teachers. Black students are often penalized for failing to perform written English within the standards “proper English”, which has been determined by white middle class culture (Smitherman 59). For this reason, she outlines five things English teachers should factor into how they examine their students’ work. Her approach does not give students a free pass for mediocrity, but rather challenges the reader to exam other avenues with which writing can be evaluated outside of the white middle class lens.
Revision is a key instrument to avoid one’s work from falling into mediocrity. This is not to discourage eager authors, but rather for them to improve upon their instinctual talent. “Shitty First Drafts” speaks to how decent writing evolves into excellent literature. Anne Lamott explains that terrific writing is not about innate skill, but rather the ability to challenge oneself to constantly improve. Following grammatical rules and proper sentence structure does not solely create art; it is through revision that something meaningful may be created. It seems that first drafts are reflective of oneself and one’s initial ideas and creativity. Revision serves to transform that personal work into something that can be consumed and understood by an audience. This is the broader purpose of literature, and it is through several drafts that artful literature is achieved.
Written tradition can serve many social, cultural, and personal needs. Literature has been used throughout human history to achieve social change. It is observably able to be used to influence and record various cultures, and thus the culture of the author and how that affects their work should be considered when being evaluated. In a similar way, writing is a tool of the author and it can be used as a personal statement to oneself or targeted for specific, or broad, audiences. In addition to all of this, the foremost factor in producing valuable literature is the reevaluation of one’s writing, for it is required to improve the work and to improve the writer overall.

Accused El Paso Mass Shooter Charged With 90 Counts of Federal Hate Crimes
A Texas man accused of deliberately targeting people of Mexican heritage in a shooting rampage that killed 22 people at an El Paso Walmart <WMT.N> store last year was charged on Thursday on 90 counts of federal hate crimes.
The charges against Patrick Crusius, 21, included 22 counts under the U.S. classification of hate crimes – violence with an added element of bias – resulting in death, for which he could face the death penalty.
Crusius was charged last year by state courts, where his capital murder trial is in its early stages.
Crusius would now face a separate trial in federal court, John Bash, the U.S. attorney for the western district of Texas, told reporters after the grand jury indictment.
“We all share same goal here – to achieve justice for the families of the victims,” Bash said.
Bash said the El Paso shooting was an act of domestic terrorism and an attack against an entire ethnic group.
“We’re firing on all cylinders to stop this. We’re going to stop hate crimes,” he said.
Crusius is accused of driving 11 hours to El Paso from his hometown of Allen, near Dallas, on Aug. 3 last year and firing at shoppers with an AK-47 rifle inside the Walmart store. He surrendered to officers who confronted him outside.
Crusius confessed while surrendering and told police he was targeting Mexicans, according to an El Paso police affidavit released days after the shooting. Most of those killed were Latinos.
In a manifesto prosecutors say was posted online by Crusius on 8chan, a now-defunct message board often used by extremists, the accused shooter said his Walmart attack “is a response to the Hispanic invasion of Texas.”
The federal indictment quoted the manifesto as also saying that Crusius was “defending my country from cultural and ethnic replacement brought on by the invasion.”
Democrats have said that Republican President Donald Trump’s anti-immigrant and racially charged language at political rallies and on Twitter has fanned racist, white nationalist sentiments, creating a political climate that is conducive to hate-based violence.
Former Texas congressman and El Paso native Beto O’Rourke, at the time of the shooting one of the contenders for the Democratic nomination for president, said Trump “helped create the hatred” that made the massacre possible.
Trump has roundly rejected the criticisms as Democrats looking to score political points off a tragedy.
