Former miner Dave Roper (aka Donkey Dave) recounted the heartbreaking experience of burying his child in a stranger's grave after being denied a funeral grant by the DHSS for being on strike. The article states that after growing pressure this policy was reversed in October 1984.
However, this is not the full story. The amendment which restored funeral support for strikers on one hand also tried to claw back mortgage relief with the other.
David Willetts, a member of Thatcher's Policy Unit, wrote "The DHSS anyway have to amend the regulations to allow them to meet funeral expenses of relations of strikers following the hard cases publicised in the press. It would be politically neat to bring out one amendment which both gave concessions for funeral expenses and tightened up the regime for mortgage payments."
Tumblr media
David Willetts would go on to be Universities Minister in David Cameron's cabinet, and oversee the increase of tuition fees to £9,000 per year. He currently sits in the House of Lords.
Tumblr media
This is why the Miners' Strike matters - the same people who made decisions during the strike are still in positions of power today, and they still haven't even acknowledged the violence that was done against mining communities in 1984.

I don't know if you've answered this question before, but do you have favorite Phantom/Christine pairings?
I have answered it before, but not too recently, so maybe it's time to make a big ole updated masterpost of all my favorites as of now!
Keep in mind that if a name isn't on here, it doesn't mean they're not a favorite or whatever, it might just mean I never saw them with a Phantom or Christine I particularly liked (e.g. Gina Beck is an all-time favorite but she's not on here because I never really saw her opposite a Phantom I also really enjoyed) or I preferred a slightly different pairing (e.g. I really liked Franc D'Ambrosio with Lisa Vroman but I slightly preferred the latter with Brad Little). And there may be one or two where I could not decide at all (e.g. do I prefer Kelly Mathieson with David Thaxton or Josh Piterman? I can't tell!). Anyway, here they are:
Michael Crawford/Sarah Brightman - The OG cast. It can't be helped, they both had such unique takes on the role and it makes them one of the most memorable pairings for me.
Dave Willetts/Jan Hartley Morris - His rougher take on the mold that Crawford left vs. Jan Hartley Morris's old-school, classical Christine is a winner.
Mikael Samuelson/Elisabeth Berg - I love Samuelson's slightly harsher vocals compared to Berg's operatic tones.
Alexander Goebel/Luzia Nistler - Goebel is eerie, ghostly, and unhinged at the end; Nistler has a lovely classical voice and a scared, slightly naive take on her Christine. It fits well.
Davis Gaines/Tracy Shayne - Gaines is commanding, sensual, elegant; Shayne is innocent but with a touch of maturity that brings a certain uniqueness to the role.
Saulo Vasconcelos/Irasema Terrazas - Hands! I think both were allowed a lot of freedom in the role and it's great.
Hans Peter Janssens/Ineke van Klinken - Janssens is both very nuts and very sad while van Klinken is a reserved yet steely-willed Christine who is more than a match for him.
Ian Jon Bourg/Alison Kelly - Bourg is good with so many Christines, but I loved Alison Kelly's feistiness.
Michael Nicholson/Olivia Safe - Just a fascinating pairing, and they were both understudies!
Yoon Young Seok/Hye Kyoung Lee - It didn't matter that both were speaking Korean, they were so emotional that I felt like I understood every aspect of their performance.
Brad Little/Lisa Vroman - Kind of mentioned above, but I love how well these two act together.
Hugh Panaro/Julie Hanson - Hugh Panaro is a sarcastic jokester of a man and it makes you really feel for Julie Hanson's child-like Christine at the end of the show.
Gary Mauer/Elizabeth Southard - A real-life married E/C couple brings all the chemistry!
Earl Carpenter/Rachel Barrell - Barrell is also really good with JOJ, and more spirited around him, but I love Earl Carpenter more.
John Cudia/Jennifer Hope Wills - Oh the sparks these two brought to the role! Cudia was scary and dominating but JHW was absolutely able to hold her own against him.
Simon Pryce/Julie Goodwin - The voices of these two!
Marcus Lovett/Anna O'Byrne - Leroux-accuracy heaven.
Jeremy Stolle/Samantha Hill - Again, I've seen these two give fantastic performances with multiple performers, but I really do love what they bring to the show together.
Tomas Ambt Kofod/Sibylle Glosted - Very detailed, nuanced performances in a production that was full of it.
Jonathan Roxmouth/Meghan Picerno - There was fire between these two! Roxmouth was intent on bending Christine to his will but Picerno was so fiercely independent that you knew he could never succeed.
Jeon Dong Seok/Son Ji-soo - JDS is a swoon-worthy Phantom while SJS brought lovely expressions to the role.
And I'm sure there are many others...

The arctic explorer Elisha Kent Kane, best known for his participation in the Grinnell expeditions in search of Sir John Franklin, shown during his time in the Mexican-American War of 1846-1848.
From a fashion standpoint, his nipped waist suggests a corset (perhaps like this extant men's corset of 1842), but his hair is the focus on Eighteen-Forties Friday. Kane has a lovely example of the longer men's hairstyles of the 1840s: "A side parting with the oiled hair looking sleek and smooth round the face, falling to the neck where it curled under, was a typical coiffure of the decade." (Handbook of English Costume in the 19th Century, C. Willett and Phillis Cunnington)
Another name for this look was "La Jeune France", presumably inspired by the French Romantics like the notoriously long-haired Théophile Gautier (who also wrote a novel called Les Jeunes-France).
Tumblr media
Gautier sculpted in 1845 by Pierre-Jean David d'Angers (Paris Musées).
Using Google Books, I searched for period references to the style:
"The prisoner... happened to have long black hair, which he wore somewhat 'en jeune France' upon his neck and shoulders" — Charles Lever, Nuts and Nutcrackers (1845) (link)
"The barber's apprentice, the yearling student, and the bellicose pygmies beyond the Channel, arrange their locks à-la–jeune-France." — Written Caricatures; a sketch of peripatetic philosophy; from hints in the Paris Charivari: by Captain Pepper (1841) (link), with illustrations by John Leech.
Tumblr media
"Young ladies having a taste for sentimental-looking men, who wear their hair à la jeune France" — Punch magazine, 1841 (link)
Tumblr media
Mister Leisure Wear 1841: cigar, long hair with a side part, loud pattern on the dressing gown (Met fashion plate detail).

James Stewart in Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (Frank Capra, 1939)
Cast: James Stewart, Jean Arthur, Claude Rains, Edward Arnold, Guy Kibbee, Thomas Mitchell, Eugene Pallette, Beulah Bondi, H.B. Warner, Harry Carey, Astrid Allwyn, Ruth Donnelly, Grant Mitchell, Porter Hall, H.V. Kaltenborn, Charles Lane, William Demarest, Jack Carson. Screenplay: Sidney Buchman, based on a story by Lewis R. Foster. Cinematography: Joseph Walker. Art direction: Lionel Banks. Film editing: Al Clark, Gene Havlick. Music: Dimitri Tiomkin.
Perhaps only James Stewart (or Gary Cooper, who turned down the role of Jefferson Smith) could have made Frank Capra's preposterous, sentimental, flag-wavingly patriotic Mr. Smith Goes to Washington into what many people still regard as a beloved classic. But now that we've spent some time being governed by probably the most corrupt man ever to hold the White House, a president elected on populist promises to "drain the swamp" in Washington but who instead spent his time wallowing in it and stocking it with still more alligators, maybe we can take a harsher look at the Capra film's politics. The people who elected Donald Trump seem to have thought they were voting for Jefferson Smith but instead elected the movie's Jim Taylor (played deliciously by that fattest of character actor fat cats, Edward Arnold). David Thomson, among others, has cogently observed that the film celebrates Jefferson Smith's bull-headed integrity, but that democracy necessarily involves the kind of compromises that Claude Rains's Senator Paine has made, and which have made him a popular and successful politician. True, he's under the thumb of the viciously corrupt Jim Taylor, who is even a manipulator of "fake news," but Thomson questions whether the people of Smith's state wouldn't have benefited more from the dam Taylor wants to put on Willett Creek, presumably one that would supply power and other benefits to the state, than from Smith's piddly boys' camp, which would benefit at best a few hundred boys. (No girls need apply?) Smith's dramatic filibuster also seems to be holding up a bill that would provide funding for some essential services. As it happens, I rewatched Mr. Smith on the night after the Senate reached an impasse on funding the entire federal government, and there could hardly be a better example of political stubbornness undermining the public good. Which is only to say that the merits of Capra's film -- and there are some -- transcend its simple-minded fable. Among its merits, it's beautifully acted, not only by Stewart, Rains, and Arnold, but also by Jean Arthur, that most underrated of 1930s leading ladies, and Thomas Mitchell, who appeared in no fewer than three of the films nominated for the best picture Oscar for 1939 -- this one, Gone With the Wind (Victor Fleming), and Stagecoach (John Ford) -- and won the supporting actor award for Stagecoach. And just run down the rest of the cast list, which seems to be a roster of every great character actor in the movies of that day, all of them performing with great energy. Capra's mise-en-scène is sometimes stagy, but Lionel Banks's great re-creation of the Senate chamber gives Capra a fine stage on which to work.

My upcoming thesis readings: Intimacy, Violence and Activism: Gay and Lesbian Perspectives on Australasian History and Society eds. Graham Willett and Yorick Smaal; Australia’s Homosexual Histories, Gay and Lesbian Perspectives V eds. David L. Phillips and Graham Willett; Making the Australian Male: Middle-Class Masculinity 1870-1920 by Martin Crotty.
As with a lot of works on histories of sexuality and gender dating from the early 2000s to the 2010s, these works reflect both the more expansive use of the term ‘homosexual’ (in which trans subjects are encompassed by the term, albeit through dubious assumptions about the relationship between trans people and sexuality) and the relative absence of trans historians in academia*, leading to some spectacularly unnuanced approaches to reading historical gender(s).
*In the Australian context, this has been a complete absence until extremely recently.

COHOES – When Season Two of HBO’s “The Gilded Age” debuts, the audience will see the Harmony Mills complex standing in for Pittsburgh and scenes from a play performed on the Cohoes Music Hall stage.
Executive Producer David Crockett described in an interview how the series set in 19th century New York City is expanding its storylines and its cast of characters leading the show, to break out of its Troy base from the first season to take advantage of settings in Albany and Cohoes.
“We like Troy so much, but we’re hoping to see some new areas … Our story expands for a second season. We need new locations and different things to see. We’re working our way around,” Crockett said.
Just as the Troy Savings Bank Music Hall stood in for a concert hall in New York City, the Cohoes Music Hall, which opened in 1874, will provide the performance space for a play.
“We have a theater scene that we will be shooting there,” Crockett said. The crews will film portions of a play that will be performed in the Music Hall, which is in the upper stories of a bank building...

Exterior of Harmony Mills on Tuesday, June 21, 2022 in Cohoes, N.Y. In the second season of The Gilded Age, the mills are to stand in for mills in Pittsburgh owned by industrialist George Russell.
Harmony Mills, which straddles either side of North Mohawk Street, will stand in for the Pittsburgh mills that tycoon George Russell, portrayed by Morgan Spector, owns in Pittsburgh.  Harmony Mills, now home to apartments and lofts, was at one time the largest cotton mill complex in the world after it was built in the late 19th century...
...In Albany, the First Presbyterian Church at Willett and State streets will be used for a church scene as may other churches in the city.  Albany’s Washington Park will stand in for scenes set in Central Park in New York, Crockett said.
Location scouts and the production team took a long look at using the Oklahoma Track in Saratoga Springs, but it won’t be filmed this year, Crockett said.  It may later on if the series continues to be renewed.
“Everything that we do is really looking for pieces of the puzzle,” Crockett said.
That’s what’s occurring with the depiction of the opening of the Brooklyn Bridge. While Troy’s widow’s walks and upper stories were studied, it appears that it will be a welding of local appearances and computer graphics to catch the flavor of the hoopla surrounding the bridge linking Brooklyn to Manhattan...

Anti-inflammatory diet.
Hey there, friends! Let's talk about something that could really make a difference in how you feel: adopting an anti-inflammatory diet. 🥦🍓🥑 It's not just a fad; there's solid science behind it that could benefit your health in numerous ways. Here's the scoop:
🥗 Key Takeaway 1: Reduce Inflammation, Feel Amazing "Chronic inflammation is at the root of many diseases, including heart disease, diabetes, and arthritis," says Dr. Frank Hu, Professor of Nutrition and Epidemiology at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. By choosing foods that fight inflammation, you can help reduce your risk of these conditions and feel better overall.
🍎 Key Takeaway 2: Load Up on Antioxidants "Antioxidants found in fruits and vegetables have been shown to combat inflammation by neutralizing free radicals in the body," explains Dr. Barry Sears, a leading authority on anti-inflammatory nutrition. So fill your plate with colorful produce to give your body the ammunition it needs to fight inflammation naturally.
🐟 Key Takeaway 3: Embrace Healthy Fats "Omega-3 fatty acids, found in fatty fish like salmon, as well as nuts and seeds, have powerful anti-inflammatory properties," says Dr. Walter Willett, Professor of Epidemiology and Nutrition at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. Including these healthy fats in your diet can help quell inflammation and support overall health.
🥕 Key Takeaway 4: Say No to Processed Junk "Processed foods high in sugar, refined grains, and unhealthy fats can promote inflammation in the body," warns Dr. Andrew Weil, founder and director of the Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine. Steering clear of these inflammatory culprits can go a long way in reducing inflammation and improving your health.
🥦 Key Takeaway 5: It's a Lifestyle, Not a Diet "An anti-inflammatory diet isn't just about what you eat; it's also about how you live," says Dr. David Katz, Director of the Yale University Prevention Research Center. Getting regular exercise, managing stress, and getting enough sleep are all important components of an anti-inflammatory lifestyle.
So there you have it, friends. By making simple yet powerful changes to your diet and lifestyle, you can tame inflammation and set yourself on the path to better health and vitality. Let's eat well, live well, and feel amazing together! 🌟 #AntiInflammatoryDiet #HealthyLiving
