Kieran Tierney doesn't get nervous. Not before cup finals, not before scotland matches in front of a packed house, and definitely not when one of his best mates invites him over.

Definitely not, especially when he's been given a plus one.

Andy Robertson's dinner parties are always heaps of fun. When it's just the lads, it's normally the entire scotland squad that shows up to either celebrate a win or console each other after a loss. They're a tight knit group- win or lose, it's nice to have the support in place. Those ones are always full of story telling and drinking, and usually end up with half the squad sleeping off various intensities of hangovers in some of the guest rooms.

This time it's different. It's nearing Christmas, and it's set to be a feast this weekend, kicking off the holiday season for any of the lads that can make it. Amdy's wife and daughter will be there, which means it'll be tame- a fact Kieran doesn't mind at all. And this time, your name was included on the whatsapp message next to his own.

It's not that he doesn't want to bring you along- he does! Of course he wants to show you off, but he's also terrified the lads will scare you off with old stories of him. Despite only dating for a few months, you mean far too much to Kieran for him to entertain the possibility of something going wrong.

You're more excited than he is, that's for sure. You haven't stopped talking about it since he mentioned it in passing a few weeks ago. Picking out your dress was a task in a half you told him- enlisting multiple of your closest friends to help make sure it was perfect, not too over the top and not too scandalous. Whatever you picked, Kieran is sure he'll love it… and also sure you'll steal the show.

And now as Kieran stands before the closet in his childhood house, he finds himself wishing he'd brought his Arsenal cufflinks from his home in London. Instead he'll have to use the little rose ones of his father's, which he doesn't really mind, it's just that they've got sharp edges and they'll be harder to fiddle with at dinner. He's gotten good at hiding his tics in public settings. The occasional post match interview at Arsenal wiped that out of him quite quickly.

A knock on his door startles him and he curses under his breath when he drops the little velvet box, sending the cufflinks flying. "Yeah? Who's it?"

"It's me, babe. Are you almost ready?" Kieran sighs, scooping up the jewelry from under his dresser and sliding the links through the holes at the cuffs in his freshly pressed black dress shirt.

"Yeah love, I'm about done. Just have to get my shoes on and I'll be ready. Mum and dad gone already?" They'd informed Kieran when you arrived that morning that they'd be spending the weekend with a family friend across the countryside, so you had the house to yourselves.

"They left ages ago, Kieran. I'll wait in the foyer, yeah? Hurry up though! I can't be late to meet your mates!"

Kieran quickly finishes buttoning his top, throws on his slacks, and ties up the laces of his Oxford shoes- the ones he hates because they pinch his toes- and checks his hair one final time in the mirror. He looks decent enough, he needs a haircut but his barber back in London can't squeeze him in for another week. He'll get to it eventually- right now he has a party to attend.

Maybe he can come up with an excuse not to go. His throat is bothering him- yeah, scratchy like he's coming down with something. Kieran scratches the stubble under his chin; that idea won't work. You'll see right through him, since it's the same excuse he always uses.

"Right, let's get on with it then." Kieran tousels his hair one final time before opening his door. He expects to find you waiting. Instead he's greeted with one of his favorite sights: your curves.

Before he's taken a single step, the rich emerald green at the hem of your floor length gown distracts Kieran. He allows his eyes to trail up, up, up over the curve of your backside to where the gown fades to a deep black, dotted through with small dust like crystals that catch the light. The second Kieran steps out of his room you turn, flashing him a brilliant smile. It's then that Kieran finally is allowed a view of you in your full glory. He grins, immediately drawn to the deep v neckline that he swears ends only a few inches above your navel.

You spin, the flared skirt swishing with the motion. "Well, how do I look? Think your friends will be impressed?"

"Mouthwatering," Kieran murmurs and means it literally. He'd be drooling if he had an ounce less of self control. You step towards him and he lays a gentle hand on your waist, conscious of leaving the satin fabric wrinkle free. "I'm not sure I should let you out of the house, let alone meet all my mates." Kieran leans forward to pepper the underside of your jaw with kisses. You tip your head back after the first, trying to get away, though he'll chase you tirelessly. He holds firm on your waist now, refusing to allow you to leave him high and dry.

"Kieran," you whine, dragging out the last letter for a few seconds. "We're gonna be late. You took too long getting ready-"

"Because I knew you were gonna look absolutely bloody gorgeous, and I had to compete somehow-"

You push at his chest, hard enough that he breaks away with a sigh. "And because of that we have no time to be distracted by kisses. We have to get going! Andy's waiting for us!"

As you drag Kieran to his car, all he can think about is marching you right back inside. For the entire ten minute drive, his hand never leaves your thigh. Sometimes he lays it flat and lets his warmth soak through the thin fabric, and once in a while he traces shapes with feather light fingertips. If nothing else, at least you've distracted him from the ball of nerves that's settled in his gut. Until he parks his Audi outside Andy's house, that is.

Kieran stumbles up the stone path after you, using your grip on his wrist to propel him along at your speed. You raise a fist to knock on the white painted door but Kieran reaches for the knob and opens it before you have the chance.

"-be here soon darling, if you could just finish picking up your toys? Thank you my love- Kieran!" Andy, previously crouched down to speak with his three year old daughter, claps Kieran on the shoulder. "Well don't you clean up nicely! And this must be your girlfriend- hello love, great to finally meet you. This one never shuts up about you and I must say, I can see why!"

Kieran's cheeks blush a furious shade of pink. "Come on mate, don't start already!"

"You're pretty." The soft compliment comes from the toddler hidden behind her fathers legs, clutching his dress pants in her tiny fists.

You crouch to be eye level with her, not a second thought about it. Kieran's heart swells to double it's size when you murmur, "Thank you sweetheart, you're ten times prettier than I am though. Your dress is gorgeous! I love the fluffy pink skirt!"

Noticing Kieran's wistful look, Andy leans in to whisper, "you'll have one of those soon enough mate. Especially if you keep looking at her like that."

"I- what? Cut it out! It's only been three months mate- I'm not thinking like that!" Actually, he is thinking like that. Has thought of that plenty of times. You, holding a baby, cooing at his daughter, who would look just like you. A few years later, maybe a boy as well- and that would be enough for him. Kieran loves you, and he told you as much on your fourth date. He's reiterated it every day since then, and you've always returned it with the same enthusiasm.

"Oh you're so in love mate," Andy coos, poking Kieran's side. "Just say it! You love her- the lads are gonna love it!"

Kieran scowls at his friend, "Oi leave me alone Robbo! Like you weren't smitten with your missus the second you saw her!"

Andy glances over his shoulder and smiles at his wife, a beautiful brunette woman who matches his chaotic energy perfectly. Andy was transparent from the beginning, telling the team again and again that he'd marry her- and he did, three years ago, at one of the most love filled ceremonies Kieran has ever attended.

"I mean just look at her mate, how could I not be? That's my gorgeous wife in there!" Andy whistles and she grins at him, wagging her towel at him before taking the last dish out of the oven. "Your lassie will be your missus soon enough, Kieran. I've not seen you so starry eyed anywhere but a football pitch."

Kieran rakes a hand through his hair while he watches you follow Andy's daughter down the hall. The little tyke insisted on showing you her stuffed animal collection and really, how could you say no?

"Look, just… don't say anything yeah? I love her, I do, and I'm terrified of messing this up. And can you help me keep the lads in check too when they get here? I don't want them scaring her off."

"I've already told them to behave, and with Mila here I'm sure they will… speaking of my daughter- Mi!"

Mila pokes her little head out of her room with a brilliant grin. "Yes, daddy?" Kieran would fold instantly if he were in Andy's shoes. Instead, his friend holds firm with his arms crossed over his chest.

"Did you steal Kieran's friend from him?" When Mila only giggles, Andy clicks his tongue. "What did daddy say about that?"

"Umm… to not to?"

"Andy it's fine," Kieran murmurs, knowing that you love children of all ages and are probably perfectly content to hang out and have a tea party. "Honest, she won't mind."

Andy sighs, scowling at Kieran in a way that makes him feel as if he's the one being scolded. "Alright, but after dinner you're getting tucked in and watching Frozen in the theater room, okay?"

"Okay daddy! Now I have to pour the tea- bye!" Your laughter permeates through the slammed door. A smile creeps onto Kieran's face; he'll never not love that sound.

For the next twenty minutes, Kieran helps Andy set the table, pick out a few bottles of wine, and pours himself a glass for good measure. Since he'll be driving he'll cap himself at just the one, but you'll be free to have as much as you want.

McGinn and McTominay are the first ones to arrive, with half a dozen other lads coming by soon after. Kieran is mid conversation with Scott when an arm snakes around his waist and your head rests on his shoulder.

"Sorry mate, one sec-" Kieran turns and kisses the crown of your head, murmuring "Alright yeah?" And waiting for your nod before turning back to his friend. "Scott, this is my girlfriend." Independent as ever, you take over the introductions and shake Scott's hand after giving him your name. Kieran can't keep the proud smile off his face. Despite his nerves, he's proud to call you his.

"I was just telling Kieran how I'll never forget the time he had to streak through the changing room-"

"Scott," Kieran half growls, having warned him already not to bring anything like that up. Why couldn't he pick a story like the time Kieran slipped on the pitch and nearly broke his ankle instead? That one was far less embarrassing. You don't need to know all the silly little details.

But when you tip your head back and laugh and the arm you have around his waist goes tighter to ensure he doesn't materialize into a ghost and slip away, Kieran forgets why he was worried in the first place. "Were you? Kieran never shares his fun stories with me… please, do tell!"

Scott launches into his story, starting again from the beginning. You watch with curious eyes, laughing at the right parts and nodding at others. Kieran's attention is locked on you. On the way your eyes crinkle, on how your laugh draws in anyone in a five meter radius. Kieran's arm winds possessively around you, hand settling on the curve of your bum as a fes of the other lads join the conversation. Will any of them try to steal you? No, of course not- they all know you're Kieran's and none of them would try changing that. It doesn't stop the primal side of Kieran's brain from wanting to make it perfectly clear who you belonged to.

By the time everyone's arrived and sat down to dinner, you've made friends with the whole squad. Kieran had no doubts about that- though his nervousness has quieted down and he's much less scared about being embarrassed. How can he be, when you reassure him with a kiss after each story? One to his jaw, another to his cheek- you leave him looking forward to the next story solely so he can have a bit more affection from you.

During a lull in conversation, Kieran refills your wine and leans over to kiss your temple. "Having fun my love? You seem like you're enjoying yourself, if those rosy cheeks say anything."

Your hand rests on Kieran's thigh under the table, the muscle going tense under your touch, "mmhhmm, I'm having loads of fun! I love you baby… you're so pretty- I love hearing stories about you!"

"Oh, you're tipsy already… you're adorable." Kieran kisses the crown of your head twice. "I love you darling, are you gonna make it through this dinner without falling asleep?"

You push against Kieran's hand when he brushes his knuckle under your eyes. "Mmhhmm I'll be okay- I'm supposed to have another tea party with Mila after dessert. I can't miss it!"

"Alright baby, if you say so," Kieran murmurs before leaning in to give you another kiss. Andy slaps the table from a few seats down, his bellowing voice breaking above individual conversations.

"Oi, Kieran! Quit snogging your missus at the table will ye? My daughter is present!"

Kieran smiles sheepishly at your Mila, who's mum has slapped a hand over her eyes. "Sorry Mila- uncle Kieran promises he'll behave now." As Kieran speaks, he snakes a hand under your arm and rests it high on your thigh. "Anyway, have you lassies heard about the time Andy had to stand on boxes for a set of kit release photos?"

Andy groans, "I'm always at the front- I was bloody sick of it! It was only for a few photos, I just needed a little boost!"

The rest of the night is filled with banter and stories of all sorts. You're too far gone for that tea party you promised Mila, so Kieran scrawls a rain check on a note for the toddler to cash in at a later date. Kieran herds you home, carries you to his bedroom and sets about getting you dressed and ready for bed. Once you're comfortable in one of his shirts and cuddled into his side, he kissed the crown of your head a million times.

"Keyyyyyyyyy don't do that- you're making my head spin!"

"Ah, sorry my love… you're drunk hmm? That's alright, I'll look after you. You just sleep yeah? I love you, sleep tight my darling." Kieran presses a soft kiss to the center of your forehead before you tuck your head under his chin. As your soft snores and gentle breathing lull him towards sleep, he's not sure what he was so nervous about in the first place.

Most scammers and cybercriminals operate in the digital shadows and don’t want you to know how they make money. But that’s not the case for the Yahoo Boys, a loose collective of young men in West Africa who are some of the web’s most prolific—and increasingly dangerous—scammers.

Thousands of people are members of dozens of Yahoo Boy groups operating across Facebook, WhatsApp, and Telegram, a WIRED analysis has found. The scammers, who deal in types of fraud that total hundreds of millions of dollars each year, also have dozens of accounts on TikTok, YouTube, and the document-sharing service Scribd that are getting thousands of views.

Inside the groups, there’s a hive of fraudulent activity with the cybercriminals often showing their faces and sharing ways to scam people with other members. They openly distribute scripts detailing how to blackmail people and how to run sextortion scams—that have driven people to take their own lives—sell albums with hundreds of photographs, and advertise fake social media accounts. Among the scams, they’re also using AI to create fake “nude” images of people and real-time deepfake video calls.

The Yahoo Boys don’t disguise their activity. Many groups use “Yahoo Boys” in their name as well as other related terms. WIRED’s analysis found 16 Yahoo Boys Facebook groups with almost 200,000 total members, a dozen WhatsApp channels, around 10 Telegram channels, 20 TikTok accounts, a dozen YouTube accounts, and more than 80 scripts on Scribd. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

Broadly, the companies do not allow content on their platforms that encourages or promotes criminal behavior. The majority of the Yahoo Boys accounts and groups WIRED identified were removed after we contacted the companies about the groups’ overt existence. Despite these removals, dozens more Yahoo Boys groups and accounts remain online.

“They’re not hiding under different names,” says Kathy Waters, the cofounder and executive director of the nonprofit Advocating Against Romance Scammers, which has tracked the Yahoo Boys for years. Waters says the social media companies are essentially providing the Yahoo Boys with “free office space” to organize and conduct their activities. “They’re selling scripts, selling photos, identifications of people, all online, all on the social media platforms,” she says. “Why these accounts still remain is beyond me.”

The Yahoo Boys aren’t a single, organized group. Instead, they’re a collection of thousands of scammers who work individually or in clusters. Often based in Nigeria, their name comes from formerly targeting users of Yahoo services, with links back to the Nigerian Prince email scams of old. Groups in West Africa can be often organized in various confraternities, which are cultish gangs.

“Yahoo is a set of knowledge that allows you to conduct scams,” says Gary Warner, the director of intelligence at DarkTower and director of the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s Computer Forensics Research Laboratory. While there are different levels of sophistication of Yahoo Boys, Warner says, many simply operate from their phones. “Most of these threat actors are only using one device,” he says.

The Yahoo Boys run dozens of scams—from romance fraud to business email compromise. When making contact with potential victims, they’ll often “bomb” people by sending hundreds of messages to dating app accounts or Facebook profiles. “They will say anything they can in order to get the next dime in their pocket,” Waters says.

Searching for the Yahoo Boys on Facebook brings up two warnings: Both say the results may be linked to fraudulent activity, which isn’t allowed on the website. Clicking through the warnings reveals Yahoo Boy groups with thousands of members—one had more than 70,000.

Within the groups—alongside posts selling SIM cards and albums with hundreds of pictures—many of the scammers push people toward other messaging platforms such as Meta’s WhatsApp or Telegram. Here, the Yahoo Boys are at their most bold. Some groups and channels on the two platforms receive hundreds of posts per day and are part of their wider web of operations.

After WIRED asked Facebook about the 16 groups we identified, the company removed them, and some WhatsApp groups were deactivated. “Scammers use every platform available to them to defraud people and constantly adapt to avoid getting caught,” says Al Tolan, a Meta spokesperson. They did not directly address the accounts that were removed or that they were easy to find. “Purposefully exploiting others for money is against our policies, and we take action when we become aware of it,” Tolan says. “We continue to invest in technology and cooperate with law enforcement so they can prosecute scammers. We also actively share tips on how people can protect themselves, their accounts, and avoid scams.”

Groups on Telegram were removed after WIRED messaged the company’s press office; however, the platform did not respond about why it had removed them.

Across all types of social media, Yahoo Boys scammers share “scripts” that they use to socially manipulate people—these can run to thousands of words long and can be copied and pasted to different victims. Many have been online for years. “I’ve seen some scripts that are 30 and 60 layers deep, before the scammer actually would have to go and think of something else to say,” says Ronnie Tokazowski, the chief fraud fighter at Intelligence for Good, which works with cybercrime victims. “It’s 100 percent how they'll manipulate the people,” Tokazowski says.

Among the many scams, they pretend to be military officers, people offering “hookups,” the FBI, doctors, and people looking for love. One “good morning” script includes around a dozen messages the scammers can send to their targets. “In a world full of deceit and lies, I feel lucky when see the love in your eyes. Good morning,” one says. But things get much darker.

The Yahoo Boys have been behind a recent wave of sextortion across the United States and elsewhere, says Paul Raffile, an intelligence analyst at the Network Contagion Research Institute who is closely tracking the criminals. Broadly speaking, during sextortion, a scammer will use intimate or explicit images to try to get someone to pay them money. “The Yahoo Boys are the principal threat actor behind the surge of sextortion that we’re seeing over the past 18 months,” Raffile says. “They are responsible for forcing dozens of teens to suicide.”

In a series of posts in one Telegram channel, highlighted by Warner, who is also involved in Intelligence for Good, one cybercriminal can be seen walking others through how to run a sextortion scam. They say they tricked people into sharing nude images—posting screenshots of the conversation—and explained ways other people can replicate it. “Hey I am posting your naked pictures on social media and Facebook,” says a sample message cybercriminals could use. “Am not just posting it am sending copies of it to your area,” the message says, before demanding $700.

While the scripts like these are shared on all social media channels, WIRED found at least 80 on the document-sharing service Scribd. The company removed them after WIRED got in touch, with a spokesperson saying there are limits on what people can upload and that the company has automated and manual reviews to remove content. “We’re actively building out new capabilities to broaden the scope of content moderation coverage to include a wider range of concerning text and image violations,” the spokesperson says. Some of the scripts had been online since 2020, and on pages where they were removed a “reading suggestions” section recommended other scam scripts.

Raffile says the Yahoo Boys have been able to “thrive” online “due to lack of moderation around all the illicit material” that they’re sharing. “They’re acting with impunity because they feel they will never get caught,” Raffile says.

Beyond the messaging platforms, the Yahoo Boys have a presence on TikTok and YouTube. “We design our app to be inhospitable to those who seek to exploit our community and we’ve removed this content for violating our policies,” a TikTok spokesperson says.

“Our policies prohibit spam, scams, or other deceptive practices that take advantage of the YouTube community,” a YouTube spokesperson says. “We also prohibit videos that encourage illegal or dangerous activities. As such, we have terminated the flagged channels for violating our policies and our terms of service.” They add that the company removed accounts for breaching policies about harmful content, spam, and generally violating its terms of service.

The accounts posted tutorials about how to scam people, link to groups on messaging apps, and promote technology for fake video calls. On TikTok, multiple accounts include carousels of images that the scammers can use in their efforts to create believable personas. Some of these include posts of elderly women for scammers who are in “need of grandma pictures for proof” of their fake identities and others for scammers who “need kids pics” for their victims.

As well as being a threat to thousands of people around the world, the Yahoo Boys can be quick to adopt new technologies. David Maimon, a professor at Georgia State University and the head of fraud insights at the identity-verification firm SentiLink, has monitored Yahoo Boys for years and says their techniques have evolved alongside new technologies.

“To build rapport with victims, the fraudsters first used text messages, then started sending recorded audio messages, to now using deepfake tools to communicate with victims live,” Maimon says. “On some of the markets we now also see the use of cloned voices. It is now accompanied with sending physical items to victims such as presents, food deliveries, and flowers.” Within some groups, they use “nudification” tools to turn photos of people clothed into nude photos, and deepfake video calls.

While the Yahoo Boys have been active for years, all the experts spoken to for this piece say they should be treated more seriously by social media companies and law enforcement. “It’s time that we start looking at Yahoo Boys as a dangerous organization, transnational organized crime, and start giving it some of those labels,” Raffile says.

'Taylor Swift fans are at it again. The superstar surprised the music world during the Grammy Awards on Sunday night by announcing the release of a new album, The Tortured Poet's Department, and the internet quickly got to work in trying to pick apart the 'secret meaning' behind the title.

Fingers immediately started pointing toward British actor Joe Alwyn, who dated Swift from 2017 until 2023. What people weren't expecting, however, was for Irish actors Paul Mescal and Andrew Scott to somehow get caught up in the mix.

But Swifties work in mysterious ways, and within hours a group of them had tracked down an old video of Alwyn and Mescal discussing a Whatsapp group they used to have with Scott. The name of the group chat? Tortured Man Club.

Mescal, a Co Kildare native, brought up the chat during an interview he and Alwyn had with Variety in 2022. Scott, from Dublin, apparently started the group after Alwyn was cast in Conversations With Friends.

"What's the name of the Whatsapp group we were in? Tortured Man Club," Mescal says to Alwyn in a video of the interview. The pair laugh and make jokes about Scott before Alwyn reveals that they had stopped using the chat. "It hasn't had much use recently," he says, to which Mescal jokes: "I feel like were less tortured now."

Alwyn also spoke about the group with GQ that year, saying that the name was a reference to his and Mescal's characters in Normal People and Conversations With Friends, which were both adaptations of Sally Rooney novels. He reached out to Mescal and met him in Dublin after the group chat was made, presumably to get his advice on playing a Rooney character.

Now, some Taylor Swift fans are saying they hope he can still lean on the chat - even if it is no longer in use. Clips of the interview have been circulating on a variety of social media platforms since Swift dropped the album name, and many seem convinced that The Tortured Poets Department is a direct reference to the chat.

"Taylor’s new album being called The Tortured Poet Department when I know Joe alwyn was in a group chat with Paul Mescal and Andrew Scott called the Tortured Man Club," one X user wrote. Another said: "Finding out Joe Alwyn was in a group chat called the Tortured Man’s Club is my villain origin story."

Another fan quipped: "I hope for Joe's sake that he still has that group chat. I feel like he's gonna need it."

The breakup between Alwyn and Swift was reportedly amicable, and her new romance with NFL star Travis Kelce has been highly publicized. However, many expect the new album to have some digs at Alwyn - and Swifites will no doubt be busy drawing conclusions again when it drops on April 19. Let's just hope this is the last Mescal and Scott have to do with it.'

“They’re here!” Her colleague called from the corridor. Nora climbed down from the stepladder she’d been standing on to hang the sign her class had made. She wasn’t sure who was more excited about today: her pupils or her colleagues.

“I’ll be there in a minute,” she said, putting the stepladder back in the corner of the assembly hall.

When it became obvious that the Premier League would come to Liverpool, the staff WhatsApp group went off non-stop. Nora’s colleagues started brainstorming ideas for how to celebrate with the pupils, and when the headteacher shared that the club had reached out to ask if some of the players could come to the school to show off the trophy, the entire staff was all in. Which is why the whole school had been frantically working on banners yesterday to decorate the assembly hall and classrooms.

Nora wiped her hands on her trousers and grabbed her lanyard from a table. The school was still empty, but the buzz of excitement was tangible. She quickly made her way over to the staff room.

“Ah, and here’s the other Year 1 teacher, Nora Edwards,” Julian Wilson, the headteacher, said as she entered. The three Liverpool players raised their hands as a greeting. Nora smiled and gave a quick wave back as she made her way over to the kettle. She locked eyes with one of the players, who gave her a cheeky smirk back. Nora could feel her cheeks heat up and quickly busied herself with making tea. He’d promised he would behave, but knowing him, it’d be a challenge.

“Shall I show you to the assembly hall?” she asked. The footballers nodded and followed her. Nora led them down the corridor and into the hall. While Virgil and James Milner admired the banners, she pulled the last player aside. “We talked about this, you said you would behave…” Nora said. “That’s not what you wanted last night,” came his reply, causing her cheeks to heat up again. “Andy…” “I know, I know. But we’re gonna have to tell them at some point,” Andy said, his pinky finger brushing against hers. Nora sighed and looked at him. “You’re right, we have to, just… Not right now?” He briefly linked his pinky with hers, giving it a quick squeeze before letting go as an answer.

Nora would have never expected to end up deeply in love with a footballer, yet here she was. They’d first met when he came to her school for a Christmas surprise for some of the pupils in Year 5 and up. She hadn’t been involved in it, but they’d bumped into each other in the staff room. They met again a week later when she was volunteering at a local food bank around the holidays. He’d been there to shoot a video showing how it operated and to ask people to donate food during the Merseyside Derby. They had started chatting once he was done filming, which turned into going to get hot chocolate. Andy had become a close friend which quickly developed into something more. That had been five months ago, and yet they hadn’t told anyone in their families or circle of friends that they’d started dating (and by the amount of time they were spending together it was a miracle no one had caught on yet). They weren’t ashamed of their relationship, just… Cautious. Nora wasn’t in the public eye and worked with young children. And while generally speaking, Liverpool left its football players alone, the outside media was not as respectful of boundaries.

The chattering and laughter of children pulled her back from her thoughts. “Let’s get you out of sight before the pupils see you,” Nora said and walked them back to the staff room which was empty now. “Eloise will get you when Julian has finished with the introductions. The children know something is happening, but not that you’re here to visit,” Nora said. “After the assembly, you will join Hannah and my classes first. Again, Eloise will take you to the classroom after the assembly.” “Sounds good, thanks Nora,” James said. Nora smiled and briefly locked eyes with Andy before leaving the room.

“So,” Virgil said once she was gone, “how long have you been dating Miss Edwards?” Andy choked on a sip of water. “I don’t know what you’re talking about mate,” he said in between coughs. “So you just like flirting and holding hands with strangers?” James asked. Andy stared at him. “Yeah, and the look she gave you before she left? Pfwoah bro, you two put bonfires to shame,” Virgil added. Andy swallowed hard. “That.. That was-..” “Don’t say ‘nothing’”, James said, “we both know that’s a lie. Listen mate, we’re not cross, just surprised. That’s all.” “Okay. Yes. She and I are dating. We’ve been together since January,” Andy said and sighed, “It’s not like we want to keep it a secret, neither of us are ashamed of the other, but with my and her job, it comes with risks. More so for her than for me.” “Do you love her?” James asked him. “Yes,” came Andy’s reply without hesitating. “Good, that’s all I need to know,” James said, slapping him on the shoulder.

The children had been even more excited than Nora had expected when the three Liverpool players walked into their classroom. They took a group photo and the children showed them the banner and bunting they had been working on the previous day.

“I’m sure you have lots of questions for us. You can ask us anything and we’ll answer honestly,” Virgil said, looking around the room. One of the girls in Nora’s class raised her hand. “Yes,” Virgil said, pointing at her. “How did you get so tall?” James and Andy laughed. “We’ve been asking the same thing ever since he joined the team,” Andy said. “I ate all my veggies when I was your age,” Virgil replied. Nora chuckled at his response. She had expected them to be good with children, but this beat her expectations. It was wonderful to see her pupils interact with them. She had been worried all of them would have been too shy to ask the men anything. “Even spinach and broccoli?” another boy asked. Virgil nodded. “Yep, even them.” “What’s your favourite colour?” one of the more quiet children asked. Nora’s heart felt like it could burst with pride when he asked his question. The boy had always been quiet, not often participating in conversations. “That’s easy: red,” James said, making his teammates and other adults chuckle. “What about you?” “I like purple and pink and green and yellow,” came the reply. “Those are great colours indeed,” James responded, nodding his head. Nora smiled fondly at the interaction. It had been brief, but she knew how much it meant for this child to open up and to get such a positive response.

Nora leant against the wall, just watching her pupils interact with some of the biggest names in football right now. She tried her hardest not to smile and go all heart-eyes whenever Andy interacted with the children. “Okay, last question before we say goodbye to our guests,” Hannah said. “I’ve got a question for your teachers,” Andy said, “Who’s your favourite Liverpool player of all time?” “Steven Gerrard, without a doubt,” Hannah answered. “Fair,” James Milner said, “what about you Miss Edwards?” “I think I’d have to go with Daniel Agger,” Nora replied. “Excellent choice,” Andy said. “Of course you’d be happy with that, you’re both defenders,” James quipped. Andy shrugged. “Can’t argue with good taste, can you Milly?” “Alright, everyone say thank you to Andy, James and Virgil,” Nora said, hoping her cheeks wouldn’t give away how this interaction was making her feel. She felt Hannah’s eyes on her but chose not to make eye contact with her colleague. “Thanks for having us,” James said. “Bye kids, listen to your teachers,” Virgil added. They left the classroom to a chorus of thank-yous and byes.

“What was that all about?” Hannah later asked her as they were watching their pupils play outside. “What do you mean?” “You and Andy Robertson, the banter between the lads about you picking a defender as your favourite player?” Nora hid her nerves behind her tea. “There’s nothing there, just them being best mates I guess,” she said. By the raised eyebrow, she could tell Hannah wasn’t buying it. Nora sighed. How could she tell her best friend that she’d been keeping this from her? That the reason she had found a million and one excuses to not go on the blind dates Hannah had tried to set up for her was that she had already found someone -someone she’d fallen head over heels in love with? “Okay, so maybe.. Maybe today wasn’t the first time I met Robbo? Maybe we met last year and maybe we’ve been seeing each other?” Nora didn’t dare look at her, afraid of judgement -or worse. “Oh babe,” Hannah said, “why didn’t you say anything? I’ve been trying to set you up with one of Rich’s friends for ages..” “Honestly? We’re more scared of the media and those implications for my job than anything else. It’s one thing to date a famous person when you have an office job, but there are children involved. I don’t think parents will be happy when they see the tabloids hanging around their child’s school…”

They were quiet for a while, watching their pupils. Hannah got up to start calling them back in. “I think you’re overthinking it. Our names and photos aren’t mentioned on the school website and the playground is hidden away from view. You should talk to Julian about this. Hiding your relationship will do neither of you any good,” she said. Nora picked up the empty mugs and thought about what Hannah had said. Maybe she was right, Nora thought. Maybe she had overcomplicated things out of fear.

Nora smiled when she saw Andy’s text come in at the end of the school day.

Only if you cook, she replied.

Nora laughed at that and quickly texted him back. She put her phone away and finished setting up the classroom for the following day. Nora had managed to talk to Julian after pick up and told him about her relationship and concerns. He had said a similar thing to Hannah, that it would be very difficult for the media to link her to the school, and that there was nothing in school policy that prohibited staff from dating a footballer.

She unlocked the door to Andy’s apartment and dropped her keys on the entryway table. “Hiya lass,” he called from the living room. Nora put her bag down by the door and made her way over. Andy pressed pause on his video game and held his hand out to her. Nora let herself be pulled onto the couch and immediately against his side. He pressed a kiss on top of her hair. “I need to tell you something,” he said. “I do, too,” she replied. Andy pulled away from her slightly to look at her. “I talked to Julian. About us. Hannah put two and two together and suggested I talk to him” she continued. “Well that makes me feel less terrible about telling Milly and Virg. I say telling, they pulled it out of me,” Andy said. “What did he say?” “That we had nothing to worry about. My face and name are not on the school website, so the chances of the media finding that out are very slim. How did the lads take it?” “Surprisingly well. Just wanted to know if I loved ye, which I do by the way,” Andy said. “Mm, good. ‘Cause I love you, too,” Nora replied, kissing him briefly. Andy pulled her closer so he could deepen the kiss, a hand sliding down to her waist. “Does this mean you’ll wear my number and name now?” Andy asked after breaking their kiss, his infamous cheeky grin in place. Nora laughed. “Get me a jersey and I might.” “You know I love a challenge,” he said, pulling her in for another kiss. “Oh, I do. Last night provided ample evidence to support that statement,” Nore retorted, “Made it quite hard to focus today..” “I know something else that’s quite hard,” Andy murmured against her neck, causing her to blush. Nora could feel him smile against her skin as he trailed kisses down her neck. “Andy…” she half moaned, half whispered, “please…” “How about we see whether we can break last night’s record,” he said, unbuttoning the first few buttons of her blouse. Nora’s brain went blank at the implication of that statement. “Three, right?” Andy asked. Nora swallowed and nodded. He got up from the couch, pulling her with him. He kissed her again, holding her close to him as he walked them in the direction of his bedroom. “Let’s see if we can make that four.”
