Where in the world is the Computer History Museum located?
Tumblr media
The Computer History Museum (CHM) is located in Mountain View, California, USA. The museum explores the computing revolution and its impact on society. The museum dates back to 1968 when electrical engineer Gordon Bell started collecting information about computers. The first exhibition took place in 1975 and became a permanent museum in 1978.
The museum was originally called The Digital Computer Museum (TDCM) and was based in Marlborough, Massachusetts. Later, under the name The Computer Museum (TCM), it moved to Boston. In 1996, the TCM History Center was established, which changed its name to the Computer History Museum in 2000. Finally, the CHM opened its new museum in Mountain View, California in 2002.
The CHM boasts the largest and most significant collection of computing artefacts in the world, including rare or one-of-a-kind objects such as a Cray-1 supercomputer, the Utah teapot, the 1969 Neiman Marcus Kitchen Computer, and an Apple I. There are around 90,000 objects, photographs and films in total.
Since 1987, the museum and its previous incarnations have honoured men and women 'whose ideas have changed the world and affected nearly every human alive today' as CHM Fellows, beginning with Admiral Grace Hopper. Other Fellows include Mitch Kapor, Steve Wozniak, Tim Berners-Lee and Margaret Hamilton.

Yesterday was Grace Hopper’s birthday (1906).
Computer science pioneer and United States Navy rear admiral Grace Hopper that is.

She is the only person who has both a supercomputer and a US Navy destroyer named after her.
What else should be named after her?

If you work with computers, stop and look at this. The Computer History Museum has found and restored videos from a 1976 conference on the first 25 years of computing. This is akin to videos of the constitutional convention of 1787.

Digital identity and e-sign technologies have enabled billions of transactions.
Tumblr media
From launching a digital identity system used by 1.3 billion people, to evolving from a primarily cash-based society to the country with the highest volume of digital payments in the world, India's digital transformation is a remarkable success story. A set of public sector digital technologies known as the "India Stack," that includes layers for proving identity, handling digital payments, and sharing data, has enabled profound societal impacts. Now street vendors in India can accept instant digital payments even if they don't have WiFi or electricity. Wait times at borders have been cut from days to minutes.
Join CHM to find out from Pramod Varma, former chief architect of the digital identity system Aadhaar and numerous India Stack technologies, how it all works.
What to Expect
Hear about India's transformative new approach to solving societal problems using digital public infrastructure.
Learn about key elements of the public civic technologies.
Discover lessons for the rest of the world on how civic investments in technology can improve societal welfare.

Happy 40th Anniversary to the Macintosh and All You Fellow Mac-Heads
This week was the 40th anniversary of the introduction of the Macintosh. I wasn’t there for that particular intro. But I read about it, saw the Super Bowl commercial and dreamed about getting one of those cool computers. I’d been working for the phone company for five years and regularly wandered by the computer stores in the mall to ogle at the newly introduced IBM PCs but didn’t think that I…

Xerox Alto Workstation, 1973.
The thing that Steve Jobs stole saw that inspired him to create Macintosh. Imagine that in an alternate universe very close to our own that instead of Copy-n-Paste it's Stuff-n-Paste.
From a visit to the Computer Museum of America, Roswell Georgia.
