I-HOW: IAU Hands-On Workshops.

Millions of people around the world celebrated the astronomical breakthroughs that have shaped science, technology and culture over the last century. The IAU100 celebrations highlighted the importance of astronomy as a tool for education, development and diplomacy.

The IAU calls for applications for workshops under the IAU Hands-On Workshops (I-HOW) initiative.

Proposals to organise one of these workshops should be submitted using the application form provided for that by email to one of the members of the I-HOW Steering Committee.

The call for workshops in 2024 is open; the deadline is 30 May 2023. See below for the procedure to prepare and submit your proposal.

How is it possible to be aware of something invisible to the eyes? In this activity, instruments and tools are combined to allow the detection of light and in that light, recognize information through more than one sense, inviting the participants, in an interactive environment, to a multi-modal approach to science and art.

The Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation in Brazil is promoting a Webinar in celebration of the International Day of Light 2023. The main objectives are:

(i) dissemination, popularization and diffusion of the importance of light for modern society.

(ii) introduce startups in the Photonics area and encourage integration between actors in the Brazilian photonics ecosystem.

This activity will consist of 10 minutes’ oral presentations each participant. This event will be transmitted by the Ministry Youtube Channel and, additionally, it will be recorded to be watched lately.

Agora reloaded.

The Agora project emerged as a proposal supported by the IAU100. It consists of a series of spontaneous, unplanned, short “interventions” carried out by professional and amateur astronomers in public settings, where an astronomy talk is not expected. This initiative is also a tribute to the first astronomers, who used to teach outdoors, with no other resources than their hands, their eyes, their voice, and of course their brain. In the IDL we decided to relaunch this project as AGORA RELOADED. Joint us!

The Historic Lighting Club club was founded in 1989 as a forum to exchange members research into the history of lighting and lamps. On 16 May, members are celebrating by lighting a lamp. The club organises regular meetings around the UK to exhibit lamps.. We welcome non-member guests.

Advanced Light Microscopy Symposium at CNSI.

Join us for the first annual Lightfest with the Advanced Light Microscopy Symposium at CNSI. A celebration of UNESCO's International Day of Light 2023, this event is held on May 16th in honor of Theodore Maiman, who fired the first laser right here in southern California on May 16th 1960. This one-day symposium will feature invited talks from a selection of light microscopy users, poster presentations and awards, an image contest, and vendor booths.
