Y'all. Someone NEEDS to do a detailed fanfic of this moment. Burnham looks like she is about to cry when Rayner tells her he SEES the stuff she is going through. Cause man. Imagine what she is going through before this? And to have someone LOOK at her like that? I'M about to cry. And the look on HIS face? "I DARE you to shoot me. Matter of fact, here let me make it easy for you.
But I know you won't." Please make a fanfic of this moment. It's intense. It's beautiful.

I have a feeling I’m gonna love Commander Rayner the same way I came to love Captain Shaw on ST: Picard. 😂 They’re jerks but they’re our jerks.

A LIST OF HISTORICAL FIGURE RPF I WANT IN TMAGP.
(This is post is also written from the point of wanting these figures and their stories in the Magnus Archives universe. Trying to keep in line with the historical contexts and figures in TMA, so most are British, except one because it's crazy to me.)
Jeremy Bentham
This whole post is inspired by how absolutely crazy it is that Jeremy Bentham is not in the original TMA series. YES, I get it was to allow Robert Smirke's architecture be front and center to the TMA plot, but I still think it is criminal. He is briefly mentioned in MAG 41 because of reasons I will explain, but briefly mentioned is not enough.
Quick rundown of this dude for those unaware: Bentham was the English philosopher to come up with the idea of the panopticon prison, and Millbank prison was originally proposed and designed by him in 1799.
I feel like there are quite a few facts about Bentham that could make killer plot points in the TMA universe: one is obviously his creation of the panopticon as a way of "humane reform" for prisoners and subsequent criticisms. And....Also he had himself publicly dissected and his skeleton was put on display as an "auto-icon" TO THIS VERY DAY. It's in the student center at University College London. It's a wax figure now with his skeleton inside. It haunts me. Alice and Sam should visit him.
Robert Knox
The Burke and Hare Murders took place in 1828 in Edinburgh, Scotland. Within the span of ten months, sixteen killings were committed, before William Hare agreed to give up details in exchange for prosecution immunity. His partner, Burke, was executed (His skeleton still remains at the Anatomical Museum at Edinburgh to this very day.)
What sets this case apart is Burke and Hare's claim it was done for "scientific purposes." All of the corpses were sold to anatomist Robert Knox, who used them for both dissection for his own study and at his anatomy lectures. While he claimed he had no idea that Burke and Hare were murders, reasonable doubt can be cast on that claim. This very-public case contributed to the Anatomy Act of 1832, which further regulated to study of human dissection to prevent events like this and "resurrectionists" digging up corpses.
In a TMA statement format, I would absolutely love a letter from Robert Knox, after his reputation has been trashed from being involved in this very public murder case, detailing his denial of ever knowing these cadavers were murdered. Of course, it's obvious he's lying, as there is some supernatural happenings surrounding his studies that just get worse the more he works with these two men. (Either Slaughter/Flesh for sure.)
Sir John Franklin
Ok, so, TECHNICALLY Sir John Franklin & The Crews of the HMS Terror and Erebus are in TMA already. In MAG 98, that Algernon dude outbids Maxwell Rayner for an artifact from, you guessed it, the HMS Terror. I think this could be a wonderfully great tie in that could connect the TMAGP universe to the TMA universe if another artifact from it is found.
I just want more of it because the disappearance of the HMS Terror and Erebus are just TMA statements waiting to happen. The HMS Terror and Erebus were two Royal Navy ships, under the command of Sir John Franklin, who ventured into the Arctic in 1845, in order to find the Northwest Passage and gather magnetic data. They disappeared, and during rescue expeditions it was discovered both ships had been abandoned as the crews attempted to trek overland to Fort Resolution 970 km southwest.
There are so many different ways you could take this story in the contexts of the TMA universe: there is evidence cannibalism occured, so obviously Flesh there. The Dark could be invoked, as both a connection to MAG 98 and the fact that the Arctic's sunless winters swallowed them. The Corruption could be used as well because there is evidence the canned rations were tainted with lead and botulism. Finally, the Vast because of the endless nothingness of the landscape they found themselves in. Admittedly, I am a big AMC's The Terror fan, and I think TMA like that show, would be a great place to represent this story's themes of the hubris of man and the British Empire.
Florence Nightingale + Mary Seacole
Both Florence Nightingale and Mary Seacole were British nurses who were pioneers in sanitary medical conditions during the Crimean War. I think less background is needed with these two, but I'd like to see an anti-Corruption artifact come from one of them, like in MAG 45 the syringe that once belonged to John Snow (19th century medical pioneer who deduced that dirty water was linked to cholera). Lowkey would also love a statement set in Scutari Hospital during the Crimean War, Florence Nightingale or Mary Seacole fight the Corruption?? Please, for the love of god.
John Lambe
Congrats...you made it to the start of the more obscure section. Get ready, because this is. A case.
"Doctor" Lambe was an astrologer and a quack physician (in his time period's context, 1545-1628, that means a person who had no formal medical training, not necessarily a charlatan, although Lambe most definitely was.) He was the personal advisor to George Villiers, 1st Duke of Buckingham, who, I don't know why he kept him around because this guy claimed he could read fortunes and find things in his crystal ball. Literally, everyone thought this guy was the Duke's personal sorcerer, which was not great for the nation, because the Duke was close to King Charles I, which if you don't remember from history class was the king who got executed and Oliver Cromwell ran England as a republic for a little bit. Regarding Lambe, a plaque even got put up in London referring to him, saying, "Who rules the kingdom? The King. Who rules the King? The Duke. Who rules the Duke? The Devil."
So what I'm saying here is that this guy is a ye olde Web avatar, which could be discovered in some government files by Alice and Sam regarding the Civil War.
Margaret Cavendish
Okay, I feel like in an alternate universe (*cough* TMAGP *cough*) she could have been the most formidable foe to Jonah Magnus. She was a 17th century (before Jonah's time but with avatars it doesnt matter) philospher, poet, scientist, and fiction writer, and the first woman to attend a meeting of the Royal Society of London (an upper class academic society which we know Barnabas Bennett was involved with in MAG 92).
Academic contemporaries os her day called her mad for her unusual and bold manners and interests that bordered on "masculine." Despite being bold af, the reason I think her and Magnus would square up is her work on natural philosophy. She claimed the use of artificial instruments that are used to study the world "delude" academics, specifically the experimental philosophers in the Royal Society. For example, when Robert Hooke created the diagram of the flea, she said using magnifiying glasses to enlarge the flea's image have no practical purpose because it doesn't help anyone afflicted by them.
Therefore, her philosophical writings are literally the antithesis of The Eye's voyeuristic knowledge-seeking. I'm not entirely sure what entity she'd be an avatar of (though her book The Blazing World gives major Spiral vibes), I just want Jonah to have to square up with an enemy in the Royal Society and have a conniption over it.
Gaspare Tagliacozzi
Last guy. He is not British, but I swear....As The Flesh's certified number one fan, I just need this statement/story in the TMA universe.
Operating in Bologna in the 16th century, Tagliacozzi was one of the pioneers of plastic/reconstructive surgery. Due to the dueling culture amongst upper-class men who felt they needed to protect their honor if insulted, there were many rich men during his time who had lost their noses. This was seem as a great social stigma, the nose was seen as the most important part of the face, and more importantly, it showed you lost that duel. So these rich men had the time and money to hire Tagliacozzi...(He also did surgery on other groups as well, but all of his literature he wrote was tailored to this group.)
Tagliacozzi was inspired by natural botany for the idea of his reconstructive nose surgery; he studied how plants and trees grew over time and applied the same logic to human skin. What he would do was this: He would attach a mold in the shape of a nose to his patient's face, he would attach this to a graft of skin on the arm, and over the course of three weeks, the living skin would grow over the nose mold.
I don't think I have to explain this one. It's my duty as the Flesh's number one fan to give the people good material to work with. (Also could be Stranger.)

Discovery 5e3 first reactions
If you had told me in the early days of season one with its Expanse knock off aesthetics and edge that Discovery would deliver an exemplar of a truly great Trek story, I'd have been deeply skeptical. Yet here we are.
I'm authentically surprised I'm in this good of a mood after the credits rolling on an episode of Discovery. This was a good episode. It was a very Star trek episode!
After the bleakness of Picard, its really refreshing for a Trek show that is not Lower Decks to be leaning into core themes of mercy, adult relationships that are nuanced rather than histrionic, and really hitting that sweet spot between action adventure, sciency goobledygook, and human idiosyncrasies.
I was really, really happy to get a Culber-centric episode. The character is great, even when its not entirely the character. I really ought to look up the actor and try to see more of his work because he's one of the big standouts for me in this series, along with Doug Jones. It was a good use of the Trill personality exchange plot device.
Saru and T'Rina's subplot was likewise nicely executed. I really like this take on Vulcans where they are subdued but not entirely flat. The crisp "handsome and erudite Saru" was a great touch.
This is at least two instances in the same episode where my meta theory about the Federation, that its superpower isn't that its perfect but that it is full of people who will immediately course correct when they realize a mistake, seems embodied by its characters. This time in the form of Saru and Burnham.
I had a theory about Burnham as well that I think may be on the money as well. That through a mix of intentional planning and reacting to some of the more thoughtful critiques of the character, Burnham's arc has been to first bounce between the extremes of denial of emotion through her Vulcan upbringing, then have to do a crash course in managing emotions after abandoning that Vulcan conditioning. The version we see of Burnham in season 5 is a Burnham who is well balanced. Someone who is informed by intuition and feeling but not ruled by it. A lot like Spock in his later years after he had fully integrated and reconciled his Human and Vulcan natures.
Which is poetic. I think Sarek, while still not winning any father of the year awards, would have been pleased to recognize that his children, well Michael and Spock at least, well able to bridge Earth and Vulcan. Even if they had to strike out on their own and figure out for themselves without his influence.
Booker is interesting too. In a lot of ways I think he's being set up for the arc that Han Solo should have had. Namely growing into responsibility, being nostalgic for aspects of his old life, yet realizing that he's not that person anymore. Which does make me think that ultimately Booker and Burnham will reconcile on account of Booker making peace with his new life and role and it happening to be one that makes a lot more sense in Burnham's world, having decided to lean into Starfleet.
Rayner is definitely a torch carrier for the Jellico tradition but like Jellico, I suspect that he's going to find his own way to relate to the crew. His "speed dating" approach to meeting the crew is painful and stilted, but its a bit like ripping a band-aid off. Tilly isn't wrong that "professional distance" is not a great way to persuade a crew that they can trust your decision making. This is a crew that has gone a long time without a hardass on the bridge and not particularly fond memories of the last time their boss was aloof and prickly. A lot of Rayner's expressions do suggest to me that he knows what he's doing and is playing the long game with Discovery's crew.
I'm really excited to (hopefully) finally see the Tzenkethi. I'm really, really hoping for a Larry Niven tribute. Its been a minute since we've had anthropomorphic felines and someone desperately needs to atone for the film Kilrathi. Wow. I have not thought about Wing Commander in a long time. l feel like I need a shower.

I need to talk about Dr. Manuela Dominguez (from The Magnus Archives). This woman Drives Me Insane. [TL; DR at the bottom.]
She is initially presented as a textbook mad scientist: a disgraced astrophysicist bent on ending the world as we know it. But with every nuance and detail introduced about this character over the course of the narrative, my understanding of her shifted. By the end, I felt as if the person she described at the beginning of her first Statement was completely divorced from the twisted thing she became— which is the repugnant truth of what happens to Fear Avatars.
Some key details from her first Statement that really struck me: 1) I can really see myself in her love for physics and her ambition. 2) Her alienation from her fanatically religious, “vicious” parents is a big contributor to her downfall, but never remotely presented as an excuse for her actions. 3) She is so utterly unrepentant.
Regarding her parents: She saw the inconsistencies and hypocrisy in their bigoted beliefs about what is “unnatural,” likely in part because, she says, “I found myself crossing that line from an early age. Although, strangely, out of everything I was, it was always my desire to pursue a scientific career that they railed against with the most energy” (MAG 135: Dark Matter).
(I could be projecting, but this line has caused me to speculate that she might also be gay. If so, it would certainly add another level of pain &/or frustration to her home situation.)
But young Dominguez disregards her parents’ ludicrous exhortations and goes on to become an an expert on dark matter (mysterious masses that cover much of the universe and do not emit, absorb, or interact with photons) and dark energy (mysterious force which may be responsible for the expansion of the universe).
It is in the process of researching these phenomena that she has a spiritual awakening of the worst kind. She soon becomes a disciple and eventually second-in-command to Maxwell Rayner, ringleader of the cult of the Dark, the Church of the Divine Host (said Host being Rayner). As a cultist, she goes on a mission aboard the vessel of allied Fears that is the Daedalus space station. There, she creates The Extinguished Sun— a sun made of dark matter, which the Church uses as a focal point in their ritual of the same name to bring about eternal darkness.
That brings us to the point where this character loses my sympathy in the same way Callum (Rayner’s partial reincarnation?) did in S5. The Extinguished Sun ritual involves keeping Marked individuals (which events in S5 lead me to fear may be predominantly children) trapped and terrified in the dark for extended periods of time, and then sacrificing them to the Dark via drowning, in a callback to the manner in which Halley/Rayner was killed/reborn as a vessel of the infinite darkness that predates time itself.
So How Am I To Cope??? Do you know how often I come across women as mad scientists in media— let alone ones who are ambiguously implied to be gay?! Not often!
But there is a possibility she kills kids, and I can’t tolerate that shite, so all I am left with is immeasurable disappointment in her lack of conscience, and in her for joining a cult instead of getting therapy, and in her parents for being dicks, and in those who have purveyed ignorance and engaged in cruelty “in the name of God” both historically and unto the modern day, and in society for the continued existence of systemic sexism (and other biases), and in the limited number of women, POC, and LGBT+ individuals portrayed as mad (and regular, marginally less fun) scientists in media, etc… It’s quite the web of inequity and suffering, stretching between this world and the fictional.
Dr. Manuela Dominguez is a character who makes me sad that there aren’t more women mad scientist characters in media. If there were, it perhaps might not hurt so much to see her progress from someone whose trials, goals, and motivations I can understand and empathize with, to an unredeemable child killer.
To clarify, I don’t believe the author’s writing of this character was bad or sexist. I don’t feel the same morose regret about what could have been when it comes to Jude Perry; I do when it comes to Agnes Montague; I don’t when it comes to Gertrude; etc. I think that Jonny intended for the audience to at least passively ponder the person that Dr. Dominguez could have been, under different circumstances. It is a feature of the writing of all the Avatars.
One of the core themes of the series is this: How do circumstances (such as economic systems, wink wink nudge nudge) shape people? Dr. Dominguez is just one of many disheartening answers to that question.
TL;DR: Dr. Dominguez started out as a victim of bad parenting, and eventually into an even more sick and twisted version of her parents, who she despised as a child for their zealotry and cruelty. But this might not hurt me so bad to think about if 1) I didn’t relate so much to her younger self, as an aspiring physicist and a sapphic trying to shake off the message that everything that brings me joy is “unnatural” and 2) if she wasn’t the first character I thought of when trying to recall women mad scientists in media.
For those who feel like looking for other fem mad scientists in podcasts, I believe Ava the theoretical physicist from Midnight Burger and doctor/assassin Vespa Ilkay from Penumbra both count. For a sane fem scientist, try the marine biologist protagonist from DOWN. If you think of any others in any kind of media, you’re welcome to respond in the comments or tags.
(I know of Poison Ivy, as well as the more sane Dr. Sattler from “Jurassic Park” and Dr. Calvin from Isaac Asimov’s “I, Robot,” and I appreciate them. You may leave them out of the replies.)

Why are my spiddy senses tingling about the placement of Booker, Michael and Commander Rayner? Michael is obviously in the middle. From where Booker and Commander Rayner are standing it seems like they are standing at the same level. Does it seem like Booker is in a stare down with the Commander? Possibly because of Michael? (Don’t attack me. I really like book. He’s nice. Relationships just change and that’s not a bad thing. People change and what a person needs from a romantic partner at one stage in life can be different at another. When Michael arrived in the 32nd century book was what she needed at the time. Then their relationship changed. Now she is a Captain of a starship and she’s always loved starfleet and the federation. Now in this new stage in life Commander Rayner might be who she needs as a romantic partner. She can always still be nice with book. Things just changed. And that’s okay.) ugh maybe I’m just reading too much into it. lol
