that FEELING of practicing this one specific passage over and over. and then coming back to it the next day. and it's so smooth. and you love your instrument and music and everything is great.

i've finally gotten back into practicing piano for an hour a day (which i really struggled with doing during the school year) and i'm already noticing progress and it's absolutely crazy!!!!?!? it's incredible how fast you can ACTUALLY LEARN when you practice multiple times a day and also sleep. sleep helps. sleep helps form those neural pathways.

so PSA: if you've been neglecting to practice. go play something that you've been struggling with for like 15 minutes. come back later, and do it again. try again tomorrow and you'll be that much better already

OTD in Music History: 45-year-old composer, conductor, and pianist Johannes Brahms (1833 – 1897) shocks the Viennese musical world of 1878 by revealing the famous big bushy beard that he will sport for the rest of his life.

Having always been clean-shaven up to that point, Brahms warned one friend in advance of the big reveal: "I am coming [to the concert] with a large beard! Prepare your wife for a most awful sight.”

Singer George Henschel (1850 – 1934) recalled what happened that night:

"I saw a man who was unknown to me, rather stout, of middle height, and with long hair and a full beard, approaching... In a very deep and hoarse voice, he gravely introduced himself as 'Musikdirektor Muller from Braunschweig.' ... An instant later, we all found ourselves laughing heartily at the perfect success of Brahms's disguise.”

Brahms was a notorious practical joker, and he must have savored the confusion he had caused. Even better, not everyone caught on so quickly – his good friend, the noted Beethoven scholar Gustav Nottebohm (1817 – 1892), apparently spent a whole evening conversing earnestly with ‘Kapellmeister Muller.’

Poor Nottebohm was also the target of one of Brahms’s most infamous practical jokes. Once, on a scrap of old music paper that he had procured, Brahms jotted down a then-current pop tune in an expert imitation of Beethoven’s musical handwriting (Brahms was an autograph collector) and bribed a local street vendor to wrap the manuscript around a sausage and sell it to Nottebohm. Brahms then arranged to be with him when this exchange occurred, and he was delighted to see the old pedant unwrap the sausage, step under a streetlight to furtively examine the paper (with his eyes popping out), and then slip it into his pocket and finish eating the greasy sausage, barehanded…

Me llamo Alexis tengo 34 años y esta es mi historia. Desde que recuerdo me ha gustado el piano. Empecé cuando tenía nueve o diez años de edad y mostré facilidad para tocar el piano. Mi papá, también músico, me inscribió a las clases de piano que, en un principio, yo no queria atender. Las clases eran en un taller que era albergado en el teatro de mi ciudad, en el piano del teatro. Un piano de cola, que no era de concierto pero para mí era enorme y me gustaba tocarlo. Pero todo empezó cuando estaba escuchando un programa de variedades de formato libre (que nunca me ha gustado por ciertas razones) y dieron la bienvenida al Titular del taller de piano "Manuel M. Ponce", Juan Carlos, quien hacia la invitación a la audiencia de atender la clausura del taller en el teatro de la ciudad. Lo que me llamó mas la atención es que mencionó quienes eran los participantes en el recital de piano, entre ellos se encontraba mi compañera de primaria Miztli, una niña super bonita quien en mi inocencia creía que me gustaba, y creo que nadie lo llegó a saber porque años mas tarde supe que era gay. Fue entonces que le dije a mi papá si podría llevarme, lo cual me imagino que le sorprendió porque era un evento de índole cultural de cierto nivel intelectual que no cualquier niño hubiera querido ir, pero yo fui. Y así fue. Mi papá me llevo y recuerdo que era la primera vez que entraba a un teatro, recuerdo la corriente de aire frío que se dejaba sentir en la sala, las sillas rojas, la alfombra de la luneta, los palcos y plateas y el telón cerrado de color rojo esperando a ser levantado para iniciar el evento. Dieron inicio y creo que la que abrió el recital fue Miztli, con la "Canción de los tamales" de las "Veinte piezas fáciles" de Ponce Qué impresionado porque cuando la escuche me pareció tan bonita su manera de tocar el piano, con sus pies colgando sin poder alcanzar solos pedales. cuando toco ella me pregunté si tambien podía hacerlo igual de bien como ella aunque no me pasaba por la cabeza querer tocar el piano. Después continuó su hermana, Alejandra, cuyo programa no recuerdo que tocó, después Ulises, luego Marco y finalmente el maestro. Creo que Ulises tocó el famoso preludio en do menor de algunos de los pequeños preludios de Bach, y Marco una invención de Bach. Otro nivel. Quedé impresionado. Terminando el recital mi papá me dijo que lo acompañara para por peguntar por las clases. Él estaba decidido a inscribirnos a mí y a mi hermano. Yo no quería, pero lo logró. Y así fue como empecé a tocar el piano. Contaré todas las historias y todas las personas que llegué a conocer en el taller y a las demás personas que llegué a conocer de otros talleres. Qué buenos tiempos me cae, y ahora que recuerdo me siento privilegiado que mi infancia haya sido allí, en ese teatro que albergaba las mas hermosas bellas artes con las que crecí y aprendí mientras viví alli, porque a veces, saliendo de la escuela o la secundaría, me iba al teatro a estudiar o a convivir con los que llegaron a ser mis amigos.

Mi hermano mayor ya tocaba el piano pero yo aprendí a tocarlo mejor que él y creo que era algo que a él le molestaba, intentaba sacar las "canciones" que él se sabía "orejeándolas" y me golpeaba o era bastante grosero e hiriente conmigo cuando se daba cuenta que lo hacía. Pero aún así seguía no podía detenerme porque veía que avanzaba y creo que hasta cierto punto pude desarrollar muy oído bastante bien, pero eventualmente dejé de ejercitarlo y perdí el hábito. Siempre he sido alguien muy reservado y tímido, especialmente porque me molestaban por ser joto, aunque no era tan afeminado, me costaba muchísimo ser yo mismo y aprendí a no hablar con nadie o ser muy reservado y no mostrar mi verdadero yo.
