Book Review: Adieu to Chicagoland
Chloe Neill — Cold Curses Endings are not necessarily a bad thing. Bibliographies, especially lengthy ones, allow bummed-out readers to take solace in the knowledge they can revisit their favorite characters anytime they wish. However, what can leave a sour taste in a reader’s brain is when the final book in the series fails to land the ending either by indulging in maudlin sentimentality,…

Chicagoland Vampires #1 Some Girls Bite Chloe Neill
Synopsis:
They killed me. They healed me. They changed me.
Sure, the life of a graduate student wasn’t exactly glamorous, but it was Merit’s. She was doing fine until a rogue vampire attacked her. But he only got a sip before he was scared away by another bloodsucker–and this one decided the best way to save her life was to make her the walking undead.
Turns out her savior was the master vampire of Cadogan House. Now she’s traded sweating over her thesis for learning to fit in at a Hyde Park mansion full of vamps loyal to Ethan Sullivan. Of course, as a tall, green-eyed, four-hundred-year-old vampire, he has centuries’ worth of charm, but unfortunately, he expects her gratitude–and servitude.
But an inconvenient sunlight allergy and Ethan’s attitude are the least of her concerns. Someone’s still out to get her. Her initiation into Chicago’s nightlife may be the first skirmish in a war–and there will be blood.

Top 5 (books published in other Novembers) Tuesday
Yes, I know, it’s a weird prompt. But (lovingly) blame Meeghan @ Meeghan Reads because she made this prompt (14th Nov) a freebie and I didn’t think of one ahead of time because I’ve been doing NaNoWrimo and other things.I’ve chosen 5 books published in previous Novembers that I haven’t gotten around to reading! Let’s go! This… is late, yes. I blame Iron Flame and NaNo 😂. 📚🚀📚 Get a Life, Chloe…

August 2023 Reading Wrap Up
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yeah, I had a bad time right in the middle of the month...
Stand Out Books from August Thornhedge by T. Kingfisher This book was just so sweet. (Yes, people die gruesomely, it's a T. Kingfisher book. It's still super sweet.) Novella length story that asks, what if Sleeping Beauty was put in the tower for good reason? And who would guard her?
The Ides of April by Lindsey Davis This book took me a while to get into. The writing style is a bit more abrupt than I'm used to-it kind of reminded me of old noir mysteries, though it's set in ancient Rome- but the ending absolutely hooked me for the series.
The Veil by Chloe Neill I'm not sure why I'm surprised that I liked this book (and the sequels) so much. It's an interesting, vivid world with fun characters. There's plenty of drama, but Neill doesn't let it drag on to the point where you're like "would you just talk to each other!" If only the library had the last book! (I'm getting it ILL and hoping it comes in before I leave on vacation. Maybe I'll just have to start her Chicagoland Vampires series in the meantime.)
What I'm Reading Now I just started Hot and Badgered by Shelly Laurenston, which is a shifter romance and it's a wild trip. I'm thoroughly enjoying it! I'm still working through The Mummy, slowly but surely. I'm stuck in Spain, for some reason, with no mummy in sight. I really need to just sit down and finish it.
What I'm Looking Forward to in September This is going to be kind of a weird month, since I'll be traveling for a good chunk of next month, which means I have to be really careful what physical books I get out from the library. I'm in the middle of a re-read of the Abhorsen series, which have long been a favorite (I wanted to be either Lirael or Evie from The Mummy when I grew up). I also finally picked up Ancillary Justice from the library, after seeing several recommendations for it. And we're heading in to spooky season, so I've got a couple of horror/thriller books lined up.
Reading Challenges I'm in the middle of three reading challenge books! The Eye of the Mammoth, a book of essays by Stephen Harrigan for Book Riot's Read Harder challenge, 13. an author local to you, and The Sad Bastard Cookbook for 11. read a cookbook cover to cover (honestly one of my least favorite prompts in this challenge, but the book is funny!) I also started A General Theory of Oblivion by José Eduardo Agualusa, which will count for Angola for my Reading Around the World challenge.

Napoleonic Historical Fantasy Romance
Tumblr media
If you've ever wanted a book that mixes Jane Austen with Naomi Novik's Temeraire novels with the odd echo of Bernard Cornwell's Sharpe novels and some Master and Commander vibes? Plus magic? The Kit Brightling books absolutely do that.
*MASSIVE CAVEAT*: I love these books, but A Swift and Savage Tide sets up a ton of stuff that is absolutely fascinating, but it cliffhangs so bad. So before you sprint out to read these books, be aware that Chloe Neill's website says that only two Kit Brightling books were guaranteed, and any other books in the series depends on sales. So we may never get answers, and uh...that might actually be a tragedy. Especially after getting angsty Rian Grant in leather pants and a pirate shirt. So be warned before we talk Kit Brighting.
Kit Brightling, captain of the ship Diana, is magically aligned with the sea, which honestly just makes her life really difficult because alignment is viewed as immensely sus after Gerard (think Napoleon) had his aligned folks use it to commit a war crime. So everyone is massively suspicious, uncomfortable, and traumatized. This first book is mostly vibes and characters, so there IS plot, but after reading it, honestly the plot didn't stick, the vibes did. And the vibes were strong enough that I was 100% good with that.
The second book balances vibes and plot extraordianrily well, so there was everything I loved about the first book plus a story that pulled me happily along---right to the edge of a cliff. I will be so, so sad if we don't get more Kit Brightling books.
In essence, Captain Brightling and her ship are required to work with Crown Agent and former soldier Rian Grant on missions, and we get some nice rivals to lovers happening with Kit and Rian, shamelessly aided and abetted by the crew of the Diana, because quite frankly, in addition to being wonderful characters, the crew knows a good rivals to lovers when they see it, and they are just as invested in that as the reader is. It's literally the best thing ever because we as readers get to ship Kian (Rit?) right alongside the crew.
Rian Grant makes shipping it even better because he is absolutely drinking the respect women juice, because not only does he have exactly zero doubt that Kit can and will excel in the performance of her duties, he's exactly frustrating enough to put weave mission and emotion together in unfailingly logical ways that make you want to SHAKE him.
Kit is immensely competent, and watching her match competence with an exploration of alignment--because she's correct that society can't just bury it and hope it goes away, it needs to be studied and used safely--is never not a joy. She also gets a really nice balance of badass and human; our girl is HERE for pistachio nougats and she is equally badass in uniform and ballgown.
Literally, the best thing about these books are the vibes, and how cozy the vibes are as you read them. The peices mesh together beautifully, and as a reader you simply float in the world's vibes, enjoying it.

Weird & Wonderful Wednesday
Tumblr media
I was intrigued by this because the blurb said that Elisa, the main character, was born a vampire, not made into a vampire. That sounded interesting.
Elisa has been in Paris, but, comes back to Chicago because someone is needed to get the different Chicago Vampire factions to talk peace. Of course, it’s not that easy. She has a secret, and, the vampires and other supernatural beings all have secrets too. So, yep, lots and lots and lots of drama to be had. Which was awesome!
I don’t think that I’ve read the Chicagoland Vampires novels, the series that this is a spinoff of. But, honestly, although I may have missed some deep text things here and there, as a story I never felt like me not having read the previous series hurt (come to find out, apparently this series takes place 20 years or so later, which would explain why I wasn’t totally lost, but, also, definitely a sign of good writing too.

ARC Review: Devouring Darkness by Chloe Neill
ARC Review: Devouring Darkness by Chloe Neill
A demon is loose in Chicago, wreaking havoc wherever she goes.  At the same time, NAC has their handful with some pack members not happy with the current state.  Dueling priorities mean Elisa and Connor have to split their focus as they try to protect their city with the help of their friends. I’ve genuinely been enjoying this series, but I never thought there would come a point where Connor and…
