Having just entered the 6th grade, Luke Fowles knows way too much about the subject of cancer. He was diagnosed with Rhabdomyosarcoma, a cancer of the soft tissues and muscles, three years ago.

“Luke's journey has been long and arduous, as reflected in his favorite sneakers,” his mom, Kristin, said. So many rough roads, in fact, that the soles wore down. Luke’s spirit did not—he just added duct tape so his toes wouldn’t stick out.

To pass the time during treatment, Luke also started drawing on his shoes. That’s when he got a little help from his friends.

His entire 4th grade class joined in and autographed the shoes as show of support.

“His class was all-in during treatment,” Kristin said. “They are a strong cohesive group and showed so much love.”

We got Luke on the phone for an interview and asked him what his shoes represent to him. We expected answers like “strength” and “toughness” and even though Luke surely has both, his answer brings us to that simple and sacred place of what we wall need most in hard times.

“The shoes just symbolize my friends,” Luke said.

After convincing him we’d take good care of his shoes (and it took some convincing!) we made this photograph for Luke...an ode to the “the strength and perseverance he holds within,” Kristin said.

It seemed only right to make the shoes fly like a superhero because @loveforluke, you are one. It's good to see that smile on you. Thank you for reminding us of the power of being there for one another.

this september, while healthy children put on their backpacks with their newly purchased stationery, please remember the little warriors who cannot attend school because they are bravely fighting their battles with cancer. please remember the families who coexist with their cancers, and cannot and do not get to clock in and out of the oncology world every day. 

september is childhood cancer awareness month. nobody wants to think of beautiful children having horrific, ugly diseases. nobody wants to know that these children suffer through gruesome treatments and sometimes aren’t cured. but people need to know, because children deserve better than 4% of medical funding and research. please remember and help join the fight. hug your loved ones and keep them close.

The Future Legends U7 Wolverhampton team (Coach McDaniel) raised awareness for Childhood Cancer during September by wearing gold headbands and wristbands in games. The boys chose to do this to recognize and honor a friend and teammate, Reed Williams. Reed was required to take a break from soccer this year while undergoing treatments at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. The gold headbands generated some discussion with the players about what cancer is and how it is treated.
