Matthew and Brady on @ The Rink Podcast
Tumblr media
Most of what they said bits of it has already come out in previous articles a few weeks back
Brady discussed his summer wedding, his excitement going into the season, the growth of his team and what he learned watching Matthew and the Panthers go on their run to the Stanley Cup Final last season.
Brady : "Just to see the every-day grind of taking care of himself, making sure he's ready for the game, and just as a leader too, taking care of yourself so you're able to demand from the rest because you're doing it right," he said. "I'm definitely ready and hopefully it'll be me in the playoffs soon.
"Seeing what he did created a lot of motivation for me over the summer."
Matthew discussed the broken sternum he sustained during the Stanley Cup Final and the pain he was in, the help he got from his brother at that time, Brady's bachelor party in Miami, and feeling a different vibe in the South Florida market after last season.
"Very different," Matthew said. "A lot more buzz. There's a lot of buzz around every sports team. It's turning into a sports crazy town and that makes it fun. [Soccer star Lionel] Messi coming in makes that much more buzz. The past few years the Dolphins have been great. What us and the Heat did last year really gave a lot of traction for us as a hockey team. So it's pretty cool." via NHL.COM
Listen to Brady from 16.04 Matthew from 40.30
______________________________________________________________
A few added things from Matthew's interview on the podcast some of which we've already heard & posted previously but included here for anyone that missed it first time round.
His injury allowed him to work on his strength & conditioning.
He wishes there was no social media after all the wedding stuff posted online, his family like to have a good time at weddings and doesn't know where people get this stuff (footage that goes viral).
Things Brady is better at than him: a better shot, video games & being a all round better human being than him (but he'll work on that!), Matthew says he himself is a ball buster, Matthew takes the bragging rights when it comes to Golf though he says his Dad is better at chirping and more witty & more funny than him & thinks his dad's game was underappreciated & underrated at the time he played, people realise from Matthew & Brady's game style how good & valuable he was and his dad gets belated recognition which he appreciates.
Says Brady's bachelor party in Miami took a few years off his life!
His summer consisted of the trip to Nashville for the player Awards, laying around in the hotel doing nothing, Bachelor parties, four weddings, and a trip to Montana in August, though he hasn't really done much of anything over the last month.
The Blood vessels and stuff were the the scary part of his injury at the time and half his body felt like it was out here, he knew something wasn't right, he didn't know what it was at the time, until they did his tests the next day. He was in the most pain after winning game three the overtime win. But now he's all good.
It was doctors who gave him the go ahead to do what he could to play just one last game. Despite the serious nature of his injury he would do it all over again if he had the chance.
He's excited to get going for camp & the new season though mentions the missing guys until around Christmas will be a tough ask (Montour & Ekblad) he feels The Panthers have more depth especially with the D this year.
Calls Alex Lyon The Lyon King & Big praise for his (Lyon) & Bob's heroics. How they had to play with only six D & two Goalies with Knight's absence last year.
The goal is to again make the playoffs, and be in the mix he wants to get of to a good start and how it sucks to have to chase for a spot like they had last year.
The Allstar was a good jump start because the Panthers weren't doing well as a team at that point which created a buzz that carried on leading on the cup run.

Yolan
Renowned chef Tony Mantuano, celebrated for elevating Italian fine dining at Spiaggia in Chicago, has once again set a remarkable standard at Yolan, situated within the Joseph, a Luxury Collection Hotel in Nashville. Collaborating with his wife, Cathy, a seasoned wine and hospitality expert, they’ve crafted a culinary haven that embraces sophistication without losing its sense of fun. Uniquely delightful features include an Aperol Spritz cart offering playful variations of the classic aperitivo. The tasting menu, inspired by diverse Italian regions, features Roman classics such as bucatini all’amatriciana and cacio e pepe, along with the iconic cotoletta alla Milanese. Don’t miss the chance to explore the glass-enclosed cheese cave, showcasing impressive 80-pound wheels of Parmigiano Reggiano and other Italian cheeses.
Merois Nestled on the rooftop of the Pendry West Hollywood, this opulent establishment showcases Wolfgang Puck’s enduring culinary prowess. Adorned with draped fabric, elegant chandeliers, and expansive floor-to-ceiling glass walls offering panoramic views of Los Angeles, the restaurant’s stunning interiors provide a fitting backdrop for the refined and thoughtful dishes. Puck’s culinary journey draws inspiration from a multitude of countries, including Japan, China, Thailand, Singapore, and Mongolia. The diverse menu spans from exquisite sashimi to the flavour-packed **Red Thai Curry with Shrimp**, sea bream, and lemongrass-coconut broth, ensuring a gastronomic experience that transcends boundaries. Camphor Chefs Max Boonthanakit and Lijo George crossed paths in Bangkok while working at Blue by Alain Ducasse. Their Michelin-starred restaurant in Los Angeles’ vibrant Arts District reflects Ducasse’s influence, blending French techniques with South Asian flavours. The menu eschews seasonality, embracing luxuriously timeless preparations. Dishes such as lentils and lamb showcase hints of cumin and cardamom, while seared beef tenderloin bathes in a Cognac cream sauce infused with peppercorn. The sleek, modern backdrop of the stark white dining room, accented by navy banquettes, complements the chefs’ contemporary creations. Providence Led by the award-winning chef Michael Cimarusti, this two-Michelin-starred fine-dining establishment stands out as perhaps the premier seafood destination in Los Angeles. Cimarusti meticulously sources sustainable seafood from American waters, transforming these premium ingredients into both artful and delectable dishes. While the menu undergoes frequent changes, you might encounter delicacies such as gently cooked Pacific oysters adorned with Champagne butter and caviar or salt-roasted Santa Barbara spot prawns. Although the tasting menus are priced at $295 per person, Providence distinguishes itself by offering a less formal and more relaxed ambiance compared to typical fine-dining establishments. AldamaNestled in the vicinity of the Williamsburg Bridge in Brooklyn, this trendy restaurant offers a style of ambitious Mexican cuisine more commonly associated with Mexico City than with New York. The ambiance successfully combines modernity with a touch of rustic charm and sultriness. Wooden tables, chairs featuring basket-like woven seats, mezcal served in clay copitas, and Latin American music collectively create a distinctive atmosphere. Among the must-try dishes are the vegan mole negro, daikon tostadas, and taco de trompo, featuring pork belly, flank steak, adobo, and pineapple-serrano gel on an heirloom corn tortilla. Atelier CrennFor numerous individuals, dining at Atelier Crenn is considered a once-in-a-lifetime experience, making it worth the journey to San Francisco. Renowned chef and proprietor Dominique Crenn made history by becoming the first two- and then three-Michelin-starred female chef in the U.S. Now, Crenn utilizes her influential position to advocate for sustainability. Atelier Crenn holds the distinction of being the first restaurant in the U.S. to achieve certification as plastic-free. Additionally, the establishment recently made the decision to eliminate meat entirely, citing its detrimental impact on the environment. As a result, the restaurant now exclusively offers pescatarian tasting menus.
Le BernardinEnumerating the numerous awards and accolades bestowed upon this iconic New York City restaurant since its inception in 1986 would be an impossible task. Chef Eric Ripert has diligently ensured the consistently superb quality of the menu for nearly 30 years, garnering three Michelin stars as a testament. The primary focus at Le Bernardin is on seafood, although there are a few meat dishes and a vegetarian tasting menu available. Opting for delicate scallop carpaccio with basil julienne or pan-roasted dover sole with green olives, toasted almonds, and aged sherry wine emulsion is a far more enticing choice than ordering fillet mignon when dining at Le Bernardin. Zou Zou’sA relatively recent addition to New York City’s vibrant restaurant scene, this glamorous establishment situated inside the Pendry Manhattan West provides a compelling reason to venture to Hudson Yards. Quality Branded, the esteemed hospitality group responsible for Don Angie and Quality Meats, has successfully curated an exceptional Eastern Mediterranean restaurant. Noteworthy dishes include a platter of dips featuring hummus with black garlic, ember-roasted eggplant, whipped ricotta with saffron apricots, green tahini with aquafaba and cilantro, and kabocha squash with brown butter and toasted almonds. Additionally, the duck borek and Yemeni au poivre kebab have become popular choices among patronsMoon RabbitIn this Michelin-starred restaurant located within the InterContinental Washington D.C. – The Wharf, Chef Kevin Tien showcases his culinary prowess with Vietnamese cuisine. Recognized as one of our Best New Chefs in 2018 during his tenure at Himitsu, his first solo venture, Chef Tien continues to draw inspiration from his first-generation, Vietnamese-American background rooted in Louisiana. Ideal for group dining, the menu encourages sharing, allowing patrons to savour a diverse range of delectable dishes. Benu At Benu, award-winning chef Corey Lee offers guests a delightful culinary experience through intricate preparations and ambitious tasting menus, garnering numerous accolades and three Michelin stars. Nestled in the heart of San Francisco, the restaurant exudes a tranquil ambiance. The menu features contemporary interpretations of classics such as xiao long bao and Korean beef barbecue. RYLAND JENNINGS: SONGWRITING CAREER
ACCOLADES - Multiple songs reached the top 20 on the US charts (Billboard and Rolling Stones) - “Rock and A Hard Place” reached #10 on the US Billboard Top 100 charts before ever being released as to radio due to popularity gained on TikTok
THE STORY BEHIND THE SONGS:
I HATE ALABAMA // Connor Smith [ X ]
Sitting in a writing room sharing their worst break up stories, one of the guys mentions that he was dating a girl who went to Alabama for college while he was attending the University of Tennessee, and he’d go down to visit her every chance he got. Ryland’s fingers instantly started twitching in anticipation, grabbing a pen and his notebook. The three other writers still tease him about how he missed everyone else’s story, but mostly just because they’re in awe of the fact that he came up with the lines ‘I drove there every weekend the Vols weren’t home at Neyland / Girl, you had this Tennessean seein’ ten years down the road" in addition to the general bulk of the chorus in under five minutes.
SAVE YOURSELF // Nate Kenyon [ X ]
When Cade showed up at Ryland’s Nashville apartment, he swore he was sober. They hadn’t seen each other in six years, and somehow it felt like Ryland was twelve years old again, watching his older brother struggle to get something done for school. Cade had struggled with addiction for years at this point, and Ryland knew he wasn’t supposed to give him money. He cleaned all the alcohol out of his place, made sure not to invite over any friends who smoked weed or did harder drugs. It didn’t matter that Ry spent all his free time trying to keep Cade on the right path. Cade started stealing stuff from Ryland and his roommates almost instantly, selling anything he could get his hands on so he could score. After three weeks, Ry finally had enough evidence in his corner to justify kicking Cade out. It was the single hardest thing he’s ever done, and he spent the rest of night writing this song. He sent the voice memo to Cade’s number, but it didn’t go through because Cade had blocked him again. Ryland hasn’t talked to Cade since then, and he's pretty sure he wouldn't even know what to say..
LONDON // Filmore [ X ]
Ryland visited London for a songwriting event, his first trip outside of the United States. On the flight over, he was up while the rest of his row slept, scrolling through his phone clearing out anything he could to make room for all of the great content he was sure he’d write. Seven days in London was bound to inspire, right? Coming across an old list of places his ex-girlfriend had wanted to visit nearly stopped him in his tracks, and Ryland instantly felt a gaping hole in his chest. He wrote this song after the first day of sightseeing, having visited every place on the list and imagining her with him the entire time. He didn’t post any photos of the trip online and hasn’t ever told the girl this song is about her or his trip.
BLINDSIDED // Kelsea Ballerini [ X ]
Ryland has written for both Kelsea and Morgan Evans, her ex-husband, and he even attended their wedding. He was closer with Kelsea through work, but overall was a big supporter of their wedding. One night, his phone rang and Kelsea let him know they were seperating. Ryland, a firm believer in love winning, tried to understand by asking some questions. When Kelsea told him that Morgan had just dropped a new song painting himself as the victim when he was equally to blame, Ryland grabbed his guitar and met her at her place. They listened to Morgan’s son together and immediately penned a response, one that really helped him understand that flawed relationships are real. It was his first real look into how complicated and confusing love can be, and how people can be so in love and fall out of it over time.
FISH IN THE SEA // Dustin Lynch [ X ]
Eight guys, six days, one incredible bachelor party in Mexico. Ryland couldn’t imagine a better way to celebrate one of his best friends getting married. Well, he didn’t think he could… until he got off the plane and heard the voicemail from his girlfriend telling him she was moving out before he got home and not to worry when her stuff was gone. Ryland had been planning to start looking at rings a few weeks later, but it sounded like she was determined to go. He texted her a single thumbs up emoji so she knew he’d gotten her message, stopped at an airport bar and knocked back three shots before he even pulled his bags off baggage claim. The rest of the guys were pretty pumped to have "Fun Ryland" with them for the trip, and one night a few of them started talking about being single in Mexico being the best way to rebound. This song came that next afternoon when they sat down with their guitars at the resort’s tiki bar.

18th Annual E-Money Year in Review: 2022 Edition
This was a weird year. There were many changes, and I had a lot of unique experiences. In the end, I think I'm in a better place (literally and figuratively) than I was a year ago. In February, I was up for my first Emmy award. I didn't win. It's a cliche, but it's definitely an honor just to be nominated. Around this time, I got to check a couple more basketball arenas off the list. I went to Western Kentucky and Middle Tennessee. I can't imagine I'll find another chance to go to either of those places. But they both were charming in their own little way. I literally just walked into MTSU's arena. I had a ticket, but there was nobody checking them at the door. With my contract expiring at WKRN at the beginning of June, I started applying for jobs in earnest. Around this same time, we learned that Petey had been matched with the VA Hospital in Boston. This assured that Petey and I would soon no longer be living in the same city (as I didn't have much of an interest in moving to Boston). This was a sad time. Now, I've really grown to appreciate the time that Petey and I had together in Nashville. It was nice being able to just make impromptu plans with her and see her on a random Tuesday. But that's not possible anymore, unfortunately. We did have a chance to take a nice little trip in March, though. We went down to Savannah for St. Patrick's Day, then over to Charleston, where I got to see my friend Caleb. We stopped briefly in Columbia, then went up to Greenville, where I got to see Jessica and we saw some 2nd round NCAA tournament games. It was nice to see some parts of SC that I hadn't gotten to visit in a while. Petey left town at the end of May, so it was just me in Nashville at that point. Simultaneously, just as I was wrapping up my job at WKRN, I got covid (for the first time). The timing was absolutely strange. I missed the first 3 days of my last week of work, but was able to come in for the last 2. Overall, having covid was terrible. I was absolutely bed-ridden for 1 or 2 days. But I got some paxlovid, which sped my recovery up. My last day at WKRN was June 3rd. What a whirlwind of a day. This wasn't just my last day at WKRN, it was my last day in news. It was very, very, very difficult to come to the decision not to do that job anymore. But the stress was just something I could not deal with anymore. I'm sad that I left that business, but I know it was for the best. I had been applying for jobs, but still didn't have one lined up at the point that my contract was due to expire. So I figured that since I had unlimited free time for the first time in my professional life, I might as well take advantage of it. I went on a 5,000 mile road trip. I got to see the Badlands in South Dakota, Devils Tower in Wyoming, my sister in Colorado, New Mexico, and then a week in Texas. The highlight of the trip for me was Big Bend National Park. It's just so remote. I took a rowboat over the Rio Grande and spent an hour or so in Mexico. I'd love to return to Big Bend again. My trip later took me through San Antonio, Houston, Galveston, and Austin, where I was able to see my cousin, Andrew, and his now-fiancee Elisa. That trip was something special. The vast majority of it was spent by myself, which really allowed me some time to think. I also love just driving through these sparsely-populated areas out west. I definitely need to do something like that again. After I got back from my trip (which took about 2.5 weeks), I was faced with the cold reality that I was unemployed and in a city that I had no connection to. I wanted to move back to Pittsburgh, but I figured I should wait until I had a job lined up before I moved. I was able to make ends meet by driving for uber and lyft. But this is definitely a time in my life that was especially trying. In the end, I applied for about 80 jobs. Of those,  I got interviews with maybe half a dozen or so. Trying to break into a different industry was especially difficult, and not at all like the job application processes I've experienced in the past. On September 1st, I had an interview with UPMC for a job at US Steel Tower. I can still vividly remember my thoughts as I was going down the escalator, leaving the building. I was so absolutely terrified that this was going to be the last time I would ever be there. Working in that building, to me, felt like it would convey a sense of legitimacy. This is the tallest building in Pittsburgh. When I was younger, working in a place like that, doing a job like that, felt like it was the sort of thing that “grown-ups” did. I really wanted that. A week or so later, I got the call that I had been offered the job, which I started at the beginning of October. Working at UPMC has been very different than what I experienced in my time in news. It is so, so, so less stressful. I feel supported at work and feel like people appreciate my concerns. That matters so much to me.
I moved out of Nashville on September 23rd. I’d been there for a little over 4 years. Nashville is a good city, and I have many positive memories from there. But Pittsburgh has always been home to me, and I am so glad to be back.

Country Singer Chance Moore Releases New Single “A Little Bit of Missin’ You”
Tumblr media
Country music singer/songwriter and Mississippi native Chance Moore recently released his new single called “A Little Bit of Missin’ You.” With tender lyrics like I’ll do what I have to do, to spend my life loving you, “A Little Bit of Missin’ You” brings a traditional country style, combined with Chance’s smooth, strong baritone. “The past few years, I let a whole lot of things distract me from my dream of music,” Chance explains. “I put it on the back burner and just worked all the time.  Though my business has become a success, music has been there constantly tugging at my heart, not wanting me to let go.  And, if I’ve realized one thing, it’s that if you try to run from what you’re meant to do in life, you’ll be miserable everyday of it.  Now, I plan on running the right direction.” About Chance Moore: From the time he was just a kid, Chance fell in love with country music. He grew up listening to his heroes in the 90’s, like George Strait, Alan Jackson and Randy Travis – but, the first time he heard Hank Williams, he was hooked. “I remember it like it was yesterday,” he said. “I was at the local drugstore in my hometown and saw one of Hank’s albums in there.  I talked my grandpa into carrying me back to buy it. I was mesmerized by how Hank could make you feel exactly what he was feeling through his songs. So, not long after, I bought another one, and another, and then another one.” As time went on and he moved off to college, he began to dig into songwriting. After college and over the next several years, Chance worked different jobs to get by as he honed his craft for singing. It was just a few years ago that Chance decided that if a career in music is what he wanted, then it was time to pick himself up and get after it. Chance started singing for the first time in church. As time went on, Chance moved off to college and worked different jobs to get by as he honed his craft for singing. “I knew in my heart I wanted to pursue music, but another part of me knew that I needed to take the time to hone my craft.” He began digging into the music of Merle Haggard and Waylon Jennings. “It really stood out me the smoothness of Merle’s delivery and how you could understand every word he sang.  And, I was really impressed with the power and depth of Waylon’s voice…so, I think I found my space somewhere in between.” Soon, Chance started making frequent trips to Nashville. It was there that, through a friend, he met Chris Latham – a Grammy winning producer – and together they produced Chance’s self-titled debut EP.  Chance is also a writer himself, penning the last song on the album. “It was one of the first country songs I wrote, and it sums up who I am as a whole. I really enjoy song writing, and I look forward to recording more original material in the future,” he said. Chance has opened for country music superstars like T. Graham Brown, Diamond Rio, The Kentucky Headhunters, and James Otto. Many miles, late nights, and struggles have brought Chance to this point in his career. “I am anxious for what the future holds and ready for wherever the music takes me. If you like traditional country, then look no further!” For more information, visit www.chancemoorecountry.com and follow Chance on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and Spotify. Read the full article

Is this the real life? pt. 5
Tumblr media
**this is literally one of my fav outfits of his**
masterpost; fic masterlist; part 4
[warnings: alcohol consumption, self-depreciation, mild language]
"Harry's so lucky I plan everything out like three months in advance," I pause to furiously run the eyeshadow across my eyelid, "Ugh!" I groan out setting the brush down once I'm satisfied with the blended colors.
"Yeah, otherwise we'd never make it to the rooftop bar in time," Dove chuckles pinning her curls up in the bathroom mirror.
We all had these trips planned down to a tee. On the off chance that we would run into Harry or anyone in the band, because let's face it they are all icons at this point, we wanted to look our best. Some people might find it a personality flaw, but it tends to reduce my over all stress about situations so overthinking is a win.
The original plan for this trip was going sightseeing in hopes of bumping into Harry, but now we are guaranteed to run into him tonight. I will be walking into a place that is not a concert venue and be an active participant in conversation with him because he wants me there. I feel like throwing up.
"Are you sure we're allowed to come? Like this wasn't meant to be a date, right?" Katie chews nervously on her pink tinted lips.
I lock eyes with her in the hotel mirror and make a whole show of rolling my eyes. "You were the voice of reason when you told me this wasn't a date. I don't see an issue with this. He knows that you guys are with me. Why would he only invite me and not you guys?"
"You're really going to be oblivious aren't you," Sofie laughs from the bed where she sits fully ready to leave. She was the least affected by this whole situation. She loved Harry, yes, but her job as a photographer put her in these types of positions often. She won't act weird. Everyone else on the other hand...
Rachel was the one to really be concerned about. Like me, she was a fan from when the boys were in One Direction. For her 16th birthday, her parents surprised her with meet and greet tickets. When she asked Niall to kiss her cheek for the photo, she nearly collapsed in his arms. We don't need anymore fainting in front of Harry, or he might start thinking that was the new normal.
"It's not being oblivious if there really isn't anything there," I finish my look with a classy red lip. I chose a relatively loose and casual outfit. We made sure to look up the rooftop bar to get a sense for the type of style. The worst thing to do is show up over/under dressed.
It looked to be a standard upscale Nashville night life bar. There was an exclusive roof area for select members. Definitely the type of place I'd have fun at, if we ever made it out of the hotel room on time.
"When did he say to meet him there?" Rachel bounces nervously around the room as if reading my mind.
"Uh," I grab my phone from the nightstand and scroll through our message thread. We've been messaging over DMs for the last week and a half. Nothing too crazy. It started with me sending him good luck text before his shows. I would leave it at that, but he always got back to me after the show and we'd talk for hours about everything under the sun. "He said to be there around 9:30 or so. He'll be at the bar in the VIP section on the rooftop."
I swallow the sudden lump of nerves. This is starting to feel so real. Honestly, I wouldn't have been able to survive HarryGate2021 without them, but now it's starting to hit me all at once. We are going to see him and talk to him and --oh man.
"We should probably head there now, or we'll be late. We can just take my car," Katie says, closing the makeup bag. She lives just outside of the city, so it's nice to have her car here instead of relying on Ubers.
I look at the clock and see that it's 9:15 and the bar is 20 minutes from our hotel. We are going to be so late.
After a few more minutes we all book it out of the hotel room and into the car. I sit in the front seat and take a deep breath.
Everything will be okay.
When we get to the address Harry sent, we valet the car and walk to the bouncer. He checks out IDs and lets us through.
Blue and purple lights filter through the room. There are so many people here dancing. It brings a smile to my lips.
Dove points to the sign directing to the rooftop entrance. Once we make it up the stairs another bouncer has a line of a few people in front of us.
My eyes drift over to the various fire-pit tables surrounded by refurbished crates for chairs. People are scattered everywhere. Some are dancing to the music in the area near the end of the bar. I look towards the other end of the bar and my eyes meet the beautiful green of the man we came here to see.
I blush and send a small wave in his direction. He breaks out into a smile and raises his drink in a greeting.
"Holy cow," Katie murmurs.
Holy cow was right. He looked so good I could cry. He's wearing his signature grandpa pants and a graphic t-shirt. His hair is getting to the point that it's curling around his ears. Personally, I love all his hair eras, but Prince Hair Harry was so iconic that I wouldn't mind a comeback.
He hops off of the barstool as we get to the front of the line. The bouncer gives us a judgmental look before holding his hand up.
"You can't come back here unless you're on the list," he holds up a clipboard and shoos us away.
A movement to my left causes me to spring into action. I grab ahold of Sofie before she mouths off and gets us kicked out. She's from New Jersey, so I wouldn't doubt she could handle this.
"Um, I think we are on the list?" I say softly with my best smile towards the burly man who just rolls his eyes.
"Turn it around ladies," he starts to step forward, as if to intimidate us.
"Trevor?" Harry speaks up behind him, sending a wink my way, "They're with me."
Trevor looks back skeptically before lifting the rope. Sofie sends him a smug look but luckily doesn't say anything further. Thankfully, because I think there is only so much Harry could do.
I giggle at my outspoken friend before walking over to Harry with my friends trailing behind. His cute little bunny teeth smiles plays on his face as he take me in. His eyes ignite a fire across my whole body.
"Hello," I breathe out.
"Hi," he breathes back. We stand in silence, taking each other in for a moment before he seems to realize we aren't alone. "Hi, I'm Harry," he greets my friends.
I clear my throat and meet Dove's eyes. She's sending me a knowing look. I'm going to get so much shit for this. "These are my friends," I point to each of them. "You've met Dove, Sofie and Rachel at the last shows. This is Katie." When I get to her, she does an awkward sort of bow movement that makes Harry chuckle.
"I've hear so much about you all. Nice to finally put faces with names," Harry says. "Why don't we get some drinks?"
Just like that, all of my nerves about tonight vanish. This weird connection we have brings a comfort that I haven't ever felt before. I decided to go with a fruity drink since they come with the tiny umbrellas that I love.
We all settle around one of the fire pits and start talking. The conversation flows a lot easier than I thought it would. Harry cracks a few jokes that make us laugh surprisingly. It's just like that night backstage, that same comforting feeling spreads through me.
"Are you guys excited for the show on Wednesday?" Harry asks sipping his tequila.
Katie nods enthusiastically, "Oh yeah! This will be my first time seeing you perform." She became a fan after the boys went on hiatus, so she never got the chance to see any of them in concert before now.
"It's truly an amazing experience to see live. Harry knows how to work the stage," I blurt out before shoving my umbrella cocktail to my lips to keep from embarrassing myself. He has to know how big of a fan I am if he snooped through my stan account. Oh God, the things that were probably on there!
Harry chuckles and sends me a smile. "I definitely try my best to make each show an amazing experience for everyone."
I'm saved when Dove asks him about his favorite concert moment so far. I take another large sip of my drink before recentering myself.
"Wait," Harry's voice draws me back to the group, "I feel like I've met you before." He points to Rachel whose eyes widen.
She looks to me as if I could save her from his elephant brain. He's totally going to bring up 'the event' as she likes to call it.
His eyebrows draw together as if in concentration, "That's right," he claps when he finally places her, "2013. You were at a meet and greet!"
"Uh," Rachel stutters before nodding her head and taking a long drink of her vodka tonic.
"It's so nice to see you again!" He smiles at her. She relaxes thinking the moment's over, until he continues on with a playful smirk. "I'll have to let Niall know I ran into you."
She sputters her drink before coughing as the rest of us let out laughs. "Oh God, please don't," she shakes her head giggling out, "That was probably the most embarrassing experience of my entire life."
"C'mon it wasn't that bad," Harry reasons, "You didn't actually pass out. Just a little stumble."
We all continue on with conversation until Sofie declares it's dance time. All of them send me a pointed look when they leave quickly. They purposely left Harry and I alone. I roll my eyes at their lack of tact.
He turns to me. "Would you like another drink?" I nod and he kindly grabs my empty glass.
When he comes back, I moved to the couch side of the fire pit. I don't overlook the fact he sat a little closer than someone you just met would.
"Here you are, love," he smiles.
I blush at the endearment. "Thank you."
He sips his glass, "So, what book are you reading this week?" he asks.
Over the last week and a half of conversations, we bonded over our love for reading. I added a few of his recommendations to my TBR and he did the same once I found out he read more things than just nonfiction.
"It's an enemy to lovers romance. Very cliché, but I love it all the same," I respond after another sip of my drink.
We fall into a safe conversation about books. It's my passion and he seems to have an avid interest in them as well. He mentioned how, on tour, he usually brings a set of books to read on his downtime. Tour life can be stressful, so having an escape world has been helpful every now and then.
After a few more drinks and entertaining stories, we both find ourselves leaning into each other giggling.
"Wait, you have an actual twitter?" Harry reels back at this information slightly with bright eyes.
"Harry," I chuckle with my straw between my lips, "Although you might be the center of my universe, I do have a twitter that is not dedicated to you. I have to have one for the people in my life that find me annoying when the only thing I talk about is boy bands."
His eyes study me for a moment, contemplating this. They drift over my flushed cheeks and amused eyes. Something seems to flash across his face before he makes a big show of pulling out his phone from his back pocket. It's the one with the pink phone case. His personal cell phone.
"Well, what is it?"
"Huh?" my eyes make their way back up to his eyes. He seems to be waiting, "Oh! I'm private on there but it's @/y/nl/n."
"Okay," he plays around with his phone for a minute before I feel mine vibrate. When I look down, I almost fall off the couch.
"D-" I swallow the fangirl down, "Did you just follow me?"
The smug look on his face told me he found my reaction amusing. "Why are you surprised?"
I took a deep breath and closed my eyes briefly to collect myself. I tend to do that around him a lot. When I open my eyes, Harry's eyes dance with amusement, but his feature have a softness about them that makes my stomach clench. "A few reasons actually," I turn towards him, wiping the condensation from my glass, "I know I seem very calm when we talk, but I'm always going to be a fan first. I have been waiting, the last decade, for you to follow me, or even acknowledge my existence, and now I have both. It's a bit surreal if I'm being honest."
He nods slightly, "I wouldn't want you to be anything but a fan firt," he smiles and then mumbles something into the rim of his glass. He said it so softly that I almost missed it, but I couldn't process those words when a sudden thought popped into my head.
"Wait! The fans! They'll know--" I start to stress. We as fans make it our mission to know what Harry does on social media. He's always so secretive and mysterious when it comes to his social media presence.
He lays a gentle hand on my knee while shaking his head, "They won't know unless you want them too."
I roll my eyes at his nonchalance. "We watch your account like a hawk, Harry. They would know if you followed me."
A smug smirk found it's way to his delicious lips, "Not if they can't see everyone I follow."
This made me pause for a moment, "What?"
He takes a sip of his tequila before answering. "Most verified accounts have this amazing feature called a hidden followers list. We can follow someone and make it hidden from the public. That's how some artists are following 0 people on their social media accounts."
I was too stunned to speak. That would mean he could be following whoever he wanted, and we would never know. Instead of freaking out about this, I file the information away to come back to later.
I give him a shy smile, "So, I made the hidden list?"
He chuckles softly and nods his head, "Of course you would."
I roll my eyes, "This cannot be real."
He chuckles, "Are we still on that debate?"
"None of this makes sense," I sigh throwing my head back on the couch.
"What doesn't make sense?" Harry ask, taking my empty glass gently from my hand.
I roll my head looking in his direction, fixing him with a serious look. "Harold, you have to look at this from my perspective," I sit up again to emphasize my point, "The person I have admired for the better part of a decade is standing in my presence telling me I made the short list for him to follow me on his exclusive following list.." I let my words trail off and shake my head in a self-deprecating manner, "I'm nothing special."
Something quickly flashed across his green eyes, "Have you ever thought about putting yourself in my shoes?" he asks quietly.
"How could your perspective be any different than mine?" I question.
A secret smile curves his lips, "It's actually very different," he throws back the rest of his drink before setting it on the table and picking up my hand that sat between us.
My brows draw together urging him on. He plays with my fingers for a moment before meeting my eyes again.
"Before the concert I received... some news. It wasn't the best. That night was going to be hard to perform to my fullest," his eyes seem to lose focus as if taking him back to that night, "I came out on stage like I did every show. My head wasn't in it, though. That is until I went to the other side of the stage and almost fell on my ass." I giggle at the memory of his little stumble. "When I looked to the crowd to see if anyone caught it, I saw you laughing...you were absolutely captivating."
The breath leave my body. I knew he looked at me and my friends, but this somehow caught me off guard. He sends a breathtaking smile my way. The type of smile where his dimples show. I can't help but bring the hand he isn't holding up slowly to poke them causing his head to throw back laughing.
"What was that?" he asks after he can catch his breath again.
I shake my head and smile, "I just had to make sure you were real."
His eyes sparkle with amusement. "How will I ever convince you this is real?"
"I'm just having a little trouble understanding why you want to talk to me is all," I say.
"Why is it so hard to believe that I would want to get to know you better?" Harry's eyebrows raising in confusion.
I roll my eyes and start playing with his finger now. "Harold," he chuckles at my tone, "Aside from the very obvious, we are definitely from two different worlds."
He doesn't seem put off by my words. "What's the very obvious, Y/N?"
"C'mon. You know what I'm taking about," I roll my eyes again.
"I really don't," he laughs.
"You are like a solid 15 out of 10 and I'm out here, maybe a 4 on a good day," I tell him playfully.
He shakes his head and grabs both on my hands to make sure I have my full attention on him. "I find you very beautiful actually."
My cheeks heat at his confession and before I can argue, he interupts.
"No, I'm serious Y/N. You are one of the most incredible people I have ever met," the smile on his face drops and is replaced by a shy expression, "I, um, I'd really like to get to know you more. There's a connection here that I just can't seem to get out of my head and I could only hope you feel it just as strongly as I do. Every time we talk it feels so," he waves his hand looking for the word, "right. My life can get really crazy sometimes. It can get to a point where it feels like it's hard to take a proper breath in...that was until you. As cliche as it may sound, I feel like I can finally breath when I talk to you."
He feels it too? That irrational pull towards something that seems bigger?
"So, what do you say?" his eyes plead with a vulnerability I haven't seen before, "Can we get to know each other better and see where this connection takes us?"

Folklore Songs - what are they about??
This is a developing thread, but I’ve been listening all day so I’m taking a stab at it.
1."The 1"
Common consensus is that this is about Dianna Agron and what they could have been. Telling lyrics are the general idea that the relationship wasn’t truly given a chance (”it would've been sweet, If it could've been me”) and “Roaring Twenties”, referring to the below circus themed party pics with Diana dressed like a flapper
Tumblr media
tbh im not totally sold on this - most because it seems more recent with lyrics like, “In my defense, I have none for never leaving well enough alone” sounds like a reference to ME! and “Roaring twenties” sounds like a reference to something that happened this year (2020). Also “throwing pennies in the pool” could be a reference to throwing Penni (Karlie’s agent) in the pool. Finally, Route 1 is the road along California’s coast, where Tay & Karlie drove on their legendary road trip...this makes my lil Kaylor heart worry.
2. Cardigan
This is the first installment in the Teenage Trio, which also includes August and Betty, and is told from the perspective of Betty. It’s about feeling so loved by someone but then being betrayed by them (”Chase two girls [Betty + August’s narrator] lose one”). The line ”And you'd be standin' in my front porch light” foreshadows to James professing love in “Betty”. Potentially Taylor is Betty - but I’m still thinking about that theory.
Tumblr media
3."The Last Great American Dynasty"
We <3 a Rhode Island throwback. Here Taylor tells the story of her house in Rhode Island that Rebekah “Betty” (??!?!??!! more on that later) Harkness used to live in. Rebekah married an heir to Standard Oil which made her one of the wealthiest women in the USA at the time. She was also known for making a scene (”She had a marvelous time ruining everything”). Additionally, she founded the Harkness Ballet (”And blew through the money on the boys and the ballet”). After Rebekah’s death Taylor purchased the house and it is now best known as the place of many epic 4th of July parties.
Tumblr media
4. Exile
Such a sad song! This is a duet between Taylor and Bon Iver, telling the story of a failed relationship that they have tried to mend many many times. Interestingly, this is also about a love triangle (like the teenage trio) -  "I can see you starin' honey/Like he's just your understudy." This line specifically feels like it could be about bearding, and seeing someone else with the person you love, but feeling like - or knowing - it’s fake. “You were my town Now I'm in exile seein' you out” references and end to the relationship Taylor discussed in False God “Staring out the window like I'm not your favorite town I'm New York City”. To me this indicates that it is about Karlie and them breaking up or going through a rough patch - continually trying to fix things - and eventually being unsure that it could ever be repaired.
5."My Tears Ricochet"
This is pretty clearly about Scott & Scooter - “And if I'm dead to you, why are you at the wake? Cursing my name, wishing I stayed” and “You had to kill me, but it killed you just the same” seem to be a reference to them trying to exploit her work and how her leaving Big Machine really ruined the business - plus there’s some LWYMMD imagery. “You wear the same jewels that I gave you as you bury me” also seems to be a clear reference for trying to use Taylor’s own work against her, taking the profits, and pushing her out of the deal. As if we needed more evidence “You hear my stolen lullabies” clearly references her stolen masters.
Tumblr media
6."Mirrorball"
Big 80s prom vibes from this song. Mirrorball is about being famous and all of her work - her most personal thoughts and dreams - just becoming different ways for other people to see themselves once she releases her music into the world. Part of being an artist is knowing that your work will reflect more of who the viewer is than who you are yourself. Here she uses the metaphor of a disco ball to explore that idea, and worries that she is losing her own identity through it “I'm still trying everything to keep you looking at me”. She also alludes to her fears that she will age out of relevancy “I know they said the end is near”, something she discussed in her documentary Miss Americana. Obviously this is internalized misogyny because we love Taylor and will listen to her music always and do not subscribe to the belief that women need to be young to be relevant because if they were a man then they'd be the man, and tay’s the man <3
Tumblr media
7. “Seven”
Personally, this is one of my favorite songs on the album. It’s so sweet and pure and lovely. This is about young love, with imagery of summer, toys, and child’s dreams to runaway together. Many people have speculated that it is about the same girl that the two unreleased Taylor songs “Sweet Tea and Gods Graces” and “Me & Britney” are about.
[Side note: initially I wondered if Me & Britney was about Britany Maack, Taylor’s long time friend who recently got married, but the names are spelled differently. Also the line in Seven “I can’t recall your face” indicates that this is about someone who Taylor is not currently in touch with.]
Both M&B and STAAG seem to be about the Seven relationship because there are general parallels with outdoor scenery, childlike wonder, and ( in the case of STAGG) sweet tea. Also all three songs indicate a gay relationship: STAGG - “And you can love like a sinner and lose like a winner”, M&B - “That boy she went ran off with, well, I thought he was crazy. Maybe I was just jealous that he'd come between me and Britney”, and Seven - “You won't have to cry or hide in the closet And just like a folk song our love will be passed on”.
Tumblr media
8. “August”
This is the second installment in the Teenage Trio, told from the perspective of the “other woman” who James meets while on summer vacation. The other woman (she doesn’t seem to have a name...unless it is August...which it could be? idk) is in love, but realizes that James isn’t in love with her - “Will you call when you're back at school? I remember thinkin' I had you”. The line “Remember when I pulled up and said "Get in the car" references the same incident which is retold in Betty, but this time with James telling Betty it was just a summer fling that didn’t mean anything.
9. This Is Me Trying
Here we have a break up song, about Taylor trying to win her lover back and feeling completely lost without them, unable to concentrate or be around people, and turning to self sabotage. It’s about the general loneliness that one feels when they’ve lost someone they truly love, and the miscommunication that can happen in a relationship when you’re not understanding each other or receiving love in the same way (hence the song’s title). I think this could be about Karlie, it seems clear that their relationship has not been smooth and that they have had many on-and-off times. It could also be serving a purpose of building the Joe break up narrative, but only time will tell for that.
10. “Illicit Affairs”
Taylor loves her secret love - this song reads like a sad version of “I Know Places”. It seems clear that this is about Karlie Kloss. “Tell your friends you're out for a run” is one of my favorite lines because Karlie started Klossy run club, where you commit to running a certain distance in a month - and she posts about it on instagram CONSTANTLY. But overall, the song details a relationship of a woman being with someone she doesn’t love (kushnerd) and sneaking around to meet up with the person she does love (tay!). The line “Tell yourself you can always stop” is so sad to me, the idea that Karlie got into this and keeps telling herself that it will only be a little longer and she can leave when she wants, but staying in her fake marriage anyway.
Tumblr media
11. Invisible String
This is pretty much the only pure love song on the album - about feeling connected to someone throughout your whole life, knowing that that somebody is out there, and then finally finding them. Taylor talks about being in Centennial Park in Nashville as a teen, and then eventually showing her lover around. The song is really self referential, with lots of easter eggs for her past work, including Bad Blood and Delicate. She also references Joe Jonas with the line “Cold was the steel of my axe to grind For the boys who broke my heart Now I send their babies presents”.
Some people have pointed out that there is a similar idea presented in Jane Eyre - when the protagonist says to her love interest “I have a strange feeling with regard to you. As if I had a string somewhere under my left ribs, tightly knotted to a similar string in you."
12."Mad Woman"
Another Scooter one - “It's obvious that wanting me dead has really brought you two together”. “The master of spin” is word play referencing the masters records scandal. “Watching you climb over people like me” points out that agents and labels are making money off the performers they find and pushing them around. There’s also a reference to Scooter’s wife Yael and how he cheats all the time, but she doesn’t do anything likely because of her own internalized misogyny - “has a couple side flings. Good wives always know. She should be mad, should be scathing like me”.
13. “Epiphany”
The first verse of this touching ballad is about Taylor’s grandfather in WW2, storming the beaches at Normandy - “Crawling up the beaches now "Sir, I think he's bleeding out"”. The second verse is about a nurse helping patients with Covid-19 - “Holds your hand through plastic now "Doc, I think she's crashing out"”. The bridge here talks about wishing there was some great epiphany, some magical solution for the suffering in the world. The chorus refers to experiencing trauma with others and staying loyal even in the hardest times, even if it means literally dying. Although this seems like a departure from the themes of rest of the album, the whole album examines loyalty and considering what you would do for the people you love - so I really don’t think it’s a departure at all.
14. “Betty”
Obviously this is the gayest song on the album and an early fan favorite. It is the final song in the teenage trio, told from the point of view of James, going to win Betty back after betraying her and sleeping with someone else (August!?) over the summer. The line "Will you kiss me on the porch in front of all your stupid friends?”, a line that is very clearly about wanting to kiss a woman, is especially striking (& gay!) when sung by Taylor. The clearest version of this plot is someone begging for forgiveness after betraying the person they love.
There is also a bit of a nod to a line in “Picture to Burn”, a break up song off Taylor’s first album. In PTB Taylor says “So go and tell your friends that I'm obsessive and crazy that's fine, I’ll tell mine you’re gay”. This lyric has since been changed in versions available online, but on the original album that's what it was. This is interesting because she’s calling attention to knowing that someone is gay and hasn’t told their friends...which you would definitely know if you had dated them.
The names “James” and “Inez” are both mentioned in the song, which are the names of Blake Lively and Ryan Reynold’s daughters. James was already featured on a Taylor Swift album, as the lil baby voice at the beginning of “Gorgeous”. Worth noting that “James” is traditional a male name, but that this character is named after a female.
ALSO I have this theory I’m working on that Taylor is Betty and this whole album is in the same world with the same people, but WILL POST MORE ON THIS LATER.
15."Peace"
Ok - this is Archer 2.0 for me, about how she is worried about how no one will ever love her or stay with her because its too much work - “the rain is always gonna come if you're standin' with me” and “No, I could never give you peace” are pretty telling lines about her concerns that people will think it is not worth it to be friends with or in a relationship with her due to all of the baggage that comes with it.
The opening lines - “Our coming-of-age has come and gone Suddenly this summer, it's clear” feed into my emerging theory that all of these songs exist in the same universe and are about the same three characters...but I’m still figuring that one out. The line “And you know that I'd swing with you for the fences Sit with you in the trenches” reference Seven and Epiphany, respectively - further supporting that all of these songs are in the same world.
16. “Hoax”
Out of all of the songs that make my little Kaylor heart ache - this is the most heartbreaking. Specifically the line “My eclipsed sun” refers to Karlie, who Taylor has called “sunshine” on multiple occasions, and her light being covered up by her contract with Kushnerd and Scooter. The line “Don't want no other shade of blue But you” makes it clear that this song is in reference to the muse for the album “Lover” - aka Karlie.
However, this is a song about betrayal and completely trusting someone, only to find that they stabbed you in the back, as is clear by the line ”Your faithless love's the only hoax I believe in”.
Additionally, the line“You knew it still hurts underneath my scars” seems to again feed into the idea that all of the songs on the album involve the same characters. This one is a bit more clear, it seems that - if this theory is correct - Betty is the narrator of this song, as she referenced her scars before “Drew stars around my scars” in Cardigan.
OK- I'm going to go deep into song by song later, but I just wanted to get something out there!!! Also def interested in hearing what everyone else thinks!
EDIT: I just found some lyrics from The Lakes in an article from Billboard. I wanted to add them in even though we don’t have the full song because I felt like we really ended on a sad note with hoax and then when I saw these I was like there is hope!!
SO the lyric Billboard included in their review was “A red rose grew up out of ice frozen ground / With no one around to tweet it” which is a continuation from the line from “Hoax” - “ This has frozen my ground”. What I’m taking from this is that in the final song Taylor finds hope <3

Nashville, Tennessee      December 3rd, 2005 - Present Day
With a sigh, Sam gets off the bus. The rain beats down on him straight away, but instead of being annoyed by it, he finds it refreshing. Finally, he’s in Nashville. It’s  taken him three days to get here. Three days of torture - which included waiting for his damn transport to arrive in the first place, being forced in a seat made for someone who is 4’8, and having to change twice to get to his final destination - but he’s in Nashville.
Of course, he could have hopped on a plane for a journey of only several hours, but he had a hunch he would have a bit of trouble getting through customs, carrying a duffel loaded with blades, guns, and ammunition. He might always be complaining about his brother’s driving skills or his collection of Metallica, Motorhead, and Black Sabbath tapes which he plays over and over again while he sings along, but seventy-six hours of traveling to get from Texas to Tennessee wasn’t a joy either.
He watches the touring car take off into the night, continuing its trip, the droplets that run down the side catching the light of the overhanging streetlights. The sound of the engine fades as the carrier merges into traffic again. Suddenly, he feels alone, left behind, and not just by the bus. It’s not the first time he experiences this uneasiness, because Sam has pondered about the fight he had with his older sibling more than once. Truth be told; he never expected Dean to leave him on the side of the road. He called his bluff, and when his brother didn’t give him an inch, he himself refused to surrender as well. If he’s completely honest with himself, he started regretting this impulsive act the minute he saw the Impala drive away, but he couldn’t let it show, he couldn’t let Dean win. He is so tired of being bossed around and being treated like a little kid. Stubborn? Maybe. Guess it runs in the family.
Sam can take care of himself, but tracking his father will not be an easy task without Dean. When it comes to Dad, the oldest son knows him best and Sam realizes he’s going to be missing him on this search. He hopes the woman who set him on this path will call him again, because he could use a lead.
So, what now? He decides it will probably be best to settle down in a motel and get online, see if he can find some information, then he will start asking questions. There’s not much he can do right at this moment, considering it’s 2.30 AM. It’s going to be quite a task, finding a man in a city covering 550 square miles with over 600.000 citizens. And all he has is the word of a girl he has never met, of which he didn’t even catch her name.      “This is insane,” he mutters, looking around.
A voice of reason whispers in his ear again: go back. Dean’s words had some truth to them. What if this is a trap? What if he’s walking straight into it? Sam’s doubts will not make him turn around, though. He is here and he is not going to stop searching until he finds Dad.
Sam keeps his head low and buries his hand in his pockets, protecting himself from the rain as he shivers. It’s not particularly cold for this time of the year, but 39 °F isn’t anything near Texas. Raindrops bring down the temperature as well and continue to fall down on the hunter as clouds block out the moon.
He starts to walk in the direction of what seems to be a hotel. The interstate, which lays directly next to the parking lot, crosses Highway 70. Lines of cars travel by, their white headlights and red tail lights lighting the road like it’s Christmas already.
Through the curtains of water, the young Winchester spots a neon sign at the entrance of the building he’s approaching. He was right; it is a hotel, funnily enough one from the same chain where Zoë spent the night in Paragould. The Hampton Inn Bellevue looks like a fancy place from the outside, and remembering the luxurious room of the huntress, he reckons this hotel will not be any different. Sam doesn’t like to waste money, but he will do anything for a decent bed after being crammed into that touring car like a canned sardine. Not that he’s planning to sleep much; he has better things to do. He has to find Dad, it’s all he can think of.
Right when he’s about to enter the establishment, he hears his cell phone ringing. Hastily, he takes his Blackberry from his pocket, hoping it to be the anonymous caller who tipped him off three days ago. The display announces the caller as ‘unidentified’, it might not be so far fetched. Sam picks up immediately.      “Hello?”      A relieved sigh sounds from the other side. “Hey, Sam.”
It’s a feminine voice alright, but it’s not the ‘mysterious lady’, as Dean called the woman who passed him the information about their Dad. He does recognize the person on the other end, though. She is the last human being on earth he expected a call from.      “Zoë,” he concludes, stunned.      “Yeah… hey, listen,” she cuts to the chase. “I’m in deep shit.”
Sam stops dead in his tracks. He thought she might be after she left so abruptly back in Arkansas, but the fact that she’s admitting that she’s in trouble means that this is serious.
“Where the hell are you?” he asks.      “I’m just outside Darrington, Washington State.”      “Are you hurt?” Sam asks worriedly.      “Yeah, but that’s not the point.” She pauses for a moment, knowing what she is about to say might come as an unpleasant surprise. “Your brother’s here.”
Completely staggered, Sam stares ahead with his phone still close to his ear. What did she just say? Dean is there? With her?! A million questions pop up in his head, but he finds it difficult to choose the first one to ask.
“What?!” is the only thing he can cry out.      “Yeah, I thought you might say that.”      “But, how the…? He went out to do Dad’s dirty laundry!” he recalls, stunned.      “Are you calling me dirty laundry?”      Sam’s eyebrows reach his hairline, remembering the coordinates John sent his brother. “You are Dad’s dirty laundry?”      “Apparently, but it doesn’t matter.” She interferes before the receiver of the call has the chance to ramble on. “Listen, Dean’s life is in danger. If he stays here with me, he’ll die. You have to get him out bef--”
Now, it’s Zo who gets interrupted. Puzzled, Sam stares at his phone for a moment, assuming the connection might be bad. When the display shows three bars in the right upper corner, he presses the Blackberry against his ear again and listens carefully, trying to identify the sounds he hears. It seems like Zoë is fighting someone over the phone, then he hears Dean in the background.      “Give me the damn phone! Give it!”      “No! Let go!”      “Zoë!”      “Don’t Zoë me, you son of a--”      “Hand me the fucking phone!”
The line cracks, but then the noise of static stabilizes. Dean has apparently won the fight over the device, because he can hear his voice loud and clear.      “Sam?”      “What?” he replies coldly.      “Whatever you do, don’t hang up,” Dean pleads before Sam does something he will regret later.      “I thought you were on Dad’s job?” the younger brother confronts, still angry with his brother.      “I am, this is the job. The coordinates led me to Zo,” he explains. “This is not some ghost hunt, Sam. This is unlike anything I’ve ever faced before.”
The hunter hears the concern in his sibling’s voice and he immediately swallows back the smart response he had waiting for him.      “I need you to get over here, and while you’re at it look up everything you can find about hellhounds,” Dean demands, calm but stern.      “Hellhounds?” Sam repeats, perplexed. “As in the actual soul claimers of the crossroad demons?”      “Yep, and we’re on the menu.”      “How did that happen? You have to make a deal before they claim your soul at the arranged time,” Sam remembers from one of the lore he studied.      “They were let off the hook,” Dean claims. “Sam, you have to find out a way to kill them.”      “You can’t kill hellhounds, Dean,” Sam replies.      “No, you don’t understand. You have to find a way to kill them,” Dean repeats slowly, making sure the words sink in.
The youngest gulps, realizing how much trouble Zoë and his brother are in. He has read some books that mentioned these creatures, but he never found anything about killing them. He turns around and stares up, letting the rain fall down on him, the water clumping his brown hair together in strands. The hunter scoffs; and he thought he made it to his final destination. He just traveled half the country to get east, now he has to travel all the way up north?
“This better not be some excuse to get me away from Dad, Dean,” he warns.      “I wish it was, Sam,” Dean says, concerned. “Hurry it up, will ya?”      “Will do.”      “And - uh, about what happened down in Texas…”      “That’s not important now. We’ll talk about it later,” Sam replies to Dean’s unspoken words.

Knowing they both can bury their pride and work this out, the younger brother closes his eyes as a burden falls off his shoulders. It must, for him to be able to carry a much heavier weight on them. Zoë’s and Dean’s life will depend on him.
“One more thing,” Sam states, before hanging up. “You do know what happens when these things catch you. You don’t just die…”      “I know. You go to hell,” Dean finishes.      The young Winchester nods his head, although his sibling can’t see that. A short silence follows, after which Dean ends their conversation.      “See you soon, Sammy.”
The line disconnects and a tone beeps in his ear, but it takes a few seconds before the young hunter actually lowers the phone and puts it away. Well, that changes things. There is no time to lose; he needs to get to Washington State and fast.
Determined, he stalks back onto the parking lot, observing his surroundings. No bus ride this time, he needs faster transportation. His gaze glides over the parking lot. Then he spots a silver 2005 Chrysler Crossfire Roadster amongst them. He nods, approving, knowing that the vehicle would make good time, but his conscience kicks in soon enough. He can not just connect some wires and steal a car like that! Or any car! But the thought of his brother and Zoë ending up dog food because he was too civilized to go grand theft auto isn’t something he could live with either. He’s left with no other option.
Reluctantly, Sam groans and eyes the vehicle, but then steps towards it while shaking his head and mumbling to himself, “I am so gonna regret this.”

Taylor Swift Leaves Her Comfort Zones Behind on the Head-Spinning, Heartbreaking ‘Folklore’
Her eighth album is a radical detour into the deepest collection of songs she’s ever come up with.
So here we are again. The world was in the middle of the cruelest summer ever, just staggering through late July, when Taylor Swift decided to make it all so much messier — her specialty. In a move that nobody saw coming, she announced a surprise album on July 23rd, less than a year after her career-capping smash Lover. (A year to the day after she dropped “The Archer.”) Like the rest of us, Swift had to cancel her summer, including her LoverFest shows, which would have been next week. Instead, she spent the quarantine season throwing herself into a new secret project: her eighth album, Folklore. But the real surprise is the music itself — the most head-spinning, heart-breaking, emotionally ambitious songs of her life.
It’s a total goth-folk album, mostly acoustic guitar and piano, largely in collaboration with the National’s Aaron Dessner. No pop songs at all. It’s as far beyond Lover as Lover was beyond Reputation. She’s always relished her dramatic creative zigzags, but this is easily her most audacious move, full of story-telling depth she’s never come close to before. Some of us have spent years dreaming Taylor would do a whole album like this, but nobody really dreamed it would turn out this great. Her greatest album — so far.
Lover self-consciously summed up the first 30 years of her life, bringing all her musical passions together. But on Folklore, she leaves her comfort zones behind. It sounds like she figured she wasn’t going to be touring these songs live anyway, so she gave up on doing anything for the radio, anything rah-rah or stadium-friendly. She just made some coffee, sat at the piano, and let her mind wander into some dark places. You can picture the candle on her piano flickering as the wax melts over her copy of Wuthering Heights and another song rolls out.
Her sonic chemistry with Dessner is right in every detail; she also teams up with her longtime wingman Jack Antonoff and duets with Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon on “Exile.” The vibe is close to “Safe and Sound,” the rootsy gem she did with the Civil Wars for The Hunger Games soundtrack in 2013. As she explains in her Prologue, “In isolation my imagination has run wild and this album is the result, a collection of songs and stories that flowed like a stream of consciousness. Picking up a pen was my way of escaping into fantasy, history, and memory.”
Folklore really feels like the debut album of a whole new Swift — her narrative scope has opened up, with a wide-ranging cast of characters, for seventeen songs without a dud. Yet you can still hear that this is the same songwriter who dropped “Last Kiss” on the world ten July-ninths ago. Here’s a Swift progress report on her quarantine: “I’ve been having a hard time adjusting/I had the shiniest wheels, now they’re rusting/I didn’t know if you’d care if I came back/I have a lot of regrets about that.” The power of her mind.
It’s amusing in retrospect how people actually worried that being happy in love might mean Swift would run out of things to write songs about. Not a chance. It turns out to be the other way around, as she lets these characters tell their own stories: A scandalous old widow, hated by her whole town. A scared seven-year-old girl with a traumatized best friend. A ghost watching her enemies at the funeral. Recovering addicts. A fumbling teenage boy. Three of the highlights — “Cardigan,” “August,” and “Betty” — depict the same love triangle, from all three different perspectives. Other songs tell both sides of a story: “The 1” and “Peace,” or “Invisible String” and “The Lakes.”
Folklore hits overdrive halfway through, when it reaches a trilogy of heavy hitters. “August,” the album’s most plainly beautiful ballad, is a summer romance gone wrong: “I can see us tangled in bed sheets/August slipped away like a bottle of wine/Because you were never mine.” “This Is Me Trying” is the disturbingly witty tale of someone pouring her heart out, to keep herself from pouring more whiskey. “Illicit Affairs” is another tale of infidelity: “Take the words for what they are/A dwindling mercurial high/A drug that only worked the first few hundred times.” The tension explodes when she sings, “Don’t call me kid/Don’t call me baby/Look at this godforsaken mess that you made me.”
It’s going to take weeks if not decades to puzzle out all the intricately inter-woven narrative details of these songs. “Mirrorball” is about the same nervous dance-floor poseur of “New Romantics,” six years later, except tonight she feels like the disco ball that reflects everyone’s most desperate insecurities. “Mad Woman” expands on the familiar topic of witch hunts, but it also sharpens the feminist rage of “The Man.” “The Last Great American Dynasty” satirizes the upper-crust milieu of “Starlight” when she sings, “There goes the loudest woman this town has ever seen/I had a marvelous time ruining everything.” (Taylor uses the word “marvelous” twice in her career, and both time it’s songs about the Kennedys? No detail is too tiny for her to plan eight years in advance.)
“Betty” is a first — she sings in the voice of the 17-year-old boy in a Taylor Swift song, reckoning with the fickle behavior detailed by the girls in “Cardigan” and “August.” It takes off from the harmonica solo in Springsteen’s “Thunder Road” — which feels appropriate for the only tale on the album where she goes back to high school. “The Lakes” is a bonus track for vinyl, CD and (what a flex) cassette, but it’s a must-hear: Taylor walks in the footsteps of William Wordsworth, the Romantic poet who essentially invented the kind of introspective writing she does, wandering the Windermere Peaks of the Lake District.
Remember when she was threatening to spend this year re-recording all her old albums? She does the opposite here — she refuses to repeat her most reliable tricks. So many of the world’s favorite Swiftian trademarks are missing. No country moves, no synth pop, no first dates, no “Taylor visits a city” song, not even a laugh. The references to fame are few and far between, although they’re tasty when they do show up, as in “Invisible String”: “Bad was the blood of the song in the cab on your first trip to L.A.” She can’t resist adding: “Cold was the steel of my axe to grind/For the boys who broke my heart/Now I send their babies presents.” Touché.
If Lover was the last album of her twenties, Folklore is the first of her thirties. Lover was styled as a well-rounded musical autobiography, with everything from Nashville twang to electro-disco. Folklore takes a completely different approach, yet feels even more intimate, simply because it’s the sound of an artist with absolutely nothing to prove. She’s never sounded this relaxed or confident, never sounded this blasé about winning anyone over. It makes perfect sense that the quarantine brought out her best, since she’s always written so poignantly about isolation and the temptation to dream too hard about other people’s far-away lives. (“Last Kiss” is usually a summer favorite, but this year, “hope it’s nice where you are” feels a little too close to the bone.) On Folklore, she dreams up a host of characters to keep her company, and stepping into their lives brings out her deepest wit, compassion, and empathy. And it sounds like for Taylor Swift, her best is yet to come.
