Men of sensitivity and passion, Gustave Courtois, left, and Pascal Dagnan-Bouveret were French painters and studio photographers during the Belle Epoque or 'beautiful era', one of the most creative periods in French history. They met as students at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris in the 1870s, then shared a studio and life together from the 1880s until Courtois' death in 1923. Both men used photography to support and inspire their work. Dagnan-Bouveret became one of the leading artists of the naturalist school, and Courtois was known for his paintings featuring sensuous young men.

Young Sculptors on a Bridge in Paris, the Old Trocadero in the Distance (1888). Carl Ernst von Stetten (German, 1857-1942). Oil on canvas.
Von Stetten went to Paris in the 1870s for training, and there met Courtois and Dagnan-Bouveret at the studio of Gérôme; it was for Courtois and von Stetten the beginning of a lifelong friendship. The young von Stetten posed for several portraits and was a model for works by his friend (and probable lover).

A gay artist: Gustave Courtois. On the left with his ‘close friend’ Pascal Dagnan-Bouveret who he met at art school; they set up a fashionable studio where they lived together just outside Paris in the 1880s in their late twenties-thirties, painting beautiful woman and each other. The second photo, by Pascal, shows Gustave sketching a famous Swiss strongman/bodybuilder Maurice Deriaz who modelled for 3 academic paintings (astonishing in their beefcakiness) & a sketch 1907-13; when he died in 1975 Deriaz left the paintings to his small hometown of Baulmes where they are now displayed. Another Courtois muse was painter Carl Ernst von Stetten, who modelled for several suggestive works. https://www.instagram.com/p/CNv8nvYHwyL/?igshid=lhfzj605dfow
