More than 30 wildlife conservation groups today urged the U.S. Forest Service to prohibit Idaho from paying private contractors to shoot wolves from aircraft in national forests in central and southeastern Idaho. The Idaho Wolf Depredation Control Board recently approved the controversial predator control measure.
Specifically, today’s letter asked the Forest Service to grant a 2023 petition from the Center for Biological Diversity. The petition explained that gunning down wolves from helicopters risks harm to other wildlife like grizzly bears and Canada lynx, as well as public safety and wilderness values.
If the Forest Service fails to promptly grant the petition, the groups may consider legal action in federal court.
“Recreationists should not have to worry about their safety while enjoying our public lands,” said Christine Gertschen, co-director of the Conservation Connection Foundation.
“Aerial gunning is dangerous for all concerned, especially for our native wildlife.”
The Idaho Wolf Depredation Control Board is funded primarily by tax dollars. The proposals approved for funding could allow aerial gunning across much of Idaho, including lands in the Caribou-Targhee National Forest, Boise National Forest, Salmon-Challis National Forest, Sawtooth National Forest and Payette National Forest.
“Aerial gunning prioritizes wolf killings over the health and safety of our shared forests,” said Sasha Truax, presidents of Teens Restoring Earth’s Environment. “It is a twisted abuse of public funding and its continuance exposes the brutality of wolf management on public lands. It must be stopped.”

A federal judge in Montana on September 1, 2018 placed a temporary 15 day hold on Wyoming and Idaho’s plan for grizzly bear hunting. The hunting was to take place in two phases - the first phase was to start on September 1 and extend throughout the Bridget-Teton National Forest, Shoshone National Forest and Caribou Targhee National. . The second phase of the grizzly bear hunting would begin on November 1 and this area of hunting would come very close to the borders of Grand Teton National Park and Yellowstone National Park. Licenses were sold at $6,000 dollars for a non state resident and $600 dollars for a resident. This second phase will be much closer to the Yellowstone (Area 1 is west of Cody, Wyoming to the borders of Yellowstone) the Area 2 and Area 6 hunting are on the west and southern borders of Grand Teton National Park outside of Jackson Hole. . The state of Montana has decided against allowing hunting of Grizzly Bears. It is estimated that there are anywhere between 1,000 to 1,300 grizzly bears in the lower 48 states of the US. Given mortality and death from natural, environmental causes, death from motor vehicles -increasing the number bears that can be legally taken will probably place a lot of pressure on this population. . There are other very small pockets of grizzly bears isolated in United States including in the Cascade National Park and Olympic National Parks. There are rumored to be grizzly bears in Colorado however this has never been confirmed. [Image: This is a photo I took of a female sub adult grizzly bear. She is hunting for salmon along the banks of a river on the Aleutian Peninsula on August 28, 2018. Palisades Reservoir is formed by Palisades Dam, which is a major feature on the Palisades Project. Recreation on this 25 square mile (16,100-acre) reservoir with 70 miles of limited access shoreline is administered by the Caribou-Targhee National Forest. Located in scenic southeast Idaho and west-central Wyoming, east of Idaho Falls. Palisades' fish species include cutthroat and brown trout, kokanee and mackinaw. The fishing season is year-round, but fluctuations in the reservoir level during the summer months result in inconsistent fishing. Spring, fall and winter ice fishing are most productive. Palisades Reservoir is in a scenic valley with forested hillsides rising from the water to the towering snowcapped mountains which form the background. The reservoir has six access roads that have been built. Public use facilities include five campgrounds, five picnic areas, and six boat ramps. This image is from the backside of Tetons national park, on hwy 26, part of the original Oregon Trail.
