That door… Is what’s left. Behind is everything. Everything we can be, or left to become. Our drummed history and identity remains.

16. The Pirate.
The Pirate lives for endless seas,
To hoist his colours on the mast,
Whilst dark sails billow in the breeze,
That drives him further from the past.
The sixteenth character in my silly poem series is Captain Kuro Solaire of @captainkurosolaire.
Probably one of the most renowned original characters in the FFXIV fandom! And certainly one of the most skilled writers and gposers I've ever had the privilege to encounter.
Creativity spills from this blog like golden trinkets from a buccaneer's chest. Passionate, original and inexplicably modest, I have to flag this one up, because I know you'll be hooked (sorry).

🔪 Has your OC ever killed someone? Ever had to defend themselves against violence? How did this make them feel? Or, alternatively, has your OC ever attacked someone? Seen someone die?
These, sir, are the hands of a healer. I have never once shed blood in name of violence, and all the blood that stains these hands belong to the patients I helped in the field or at the table. I do know how to protect myself, and once or twice I did throw punches at people to get distance, but there are ways, and certain chemicals that could be use to... disable people without killing them.
I have seen a lot of death, as it walks together with life, an endless circle. I have shed my fair share of tears for each of them. It breaks my heart, but I got to keep my head up, and hands steady, for I have a job to do.

Brandt Character Profile (UPDATED!)
General Characteristics
Name: Brandt Vedyrson
Other Names: “Brandy” (a nickname used by friends to annoy him), Unknown Family Name, “Lizard” (derogatory term for Au Ra by Ishgardians), Shinjiro “Shinji” Ishida (pseudonym)
Titles: The Travelling Hunter, Black Dragon, Captain, Voidbuster/Sinrender. (Both of which he’s tried to kick off himself.)
Personal Characteristics
Primary Objective: Brandt’s raison d'être, his reason for being, is to protect the innocent and powerless. To this end, he hunts those who would prey on the weak and set up an agency in Mor Dhona where they can come for help. Recently he was contacted by a mysterious figure who requested his presence at the Crystal Tower...
Secondary Objectives: Brandt seeks to make amends with the Dragons for wrongs he committed to them in the Dragonsong War after their recent armistice with Ishgard. Along the way, Brandt is keen to discover his true identity.
Secrets: As a youth, Brandt came into direct contact with the Eye of Nidhogg during a dragon raid. This caused him to become aetherically linked to the Black Wyrm and was the cause of him being inducted into the Dragoon Corps at an earlier age than most. He keeps this fact hidden from most unless he places a great deal of trust in them.
Quirks: While often serious, having a tenancy to fall into episodes of reflection, Brand can often act quite snarky and cocky. Additionally, Brandt tends to give people short nicknames after a while, a sign of friendship on his part though they usually consist of a shortening of their first name or a defining attribute.
Mental Characteristics
Known Languages: Eorzean. Conversational Hingan and Xaelan. Rough knowledge of Doman.
Lures: Brandt seeks dangerous situations, usually ones he can solve with a cutting remark or a cut of his Trigger. He will also often be drawn to people who are willing to share their time and experiences with him.
Savvies: Due to being a highly trained Dragoon, Brandt is skilled in the art of physical combat and is generally quite Acrobatic for his stature. He has put extensive research into beings not of Hydaelyn, Voidsent and the like, and knows the ins and outs of most of their ilk.
Ineptities: Given his history, Brandt cannot understand the weight placed on family ties. He is also incapable of playing musical instruments, but appreciates the art all the same. Recently discovered to be an absolutely terrible shot.
Temperament: Phlegmatic
Hobbies: In the pursuit of self-betterment Brandt has taken up Fishing and Cooking. These combine with a love of sightseeing as a driving force to explore Hydaelyn.
Philosophical Characteristics
Morality: Brandt usually believes that he is morally decent in most aspects, accepting of almost all viewpoints. However, he is not above committing criminal acts should he view them as just in the moment, unless at the detriment of another he sees as innocent, and has participated in shadier dealings in the past. He also believes that it is generally fine to indulge one’s self in their vices, I.E. drinking, gambling or use of narcotics.
Perception: Brandt is typically a realist, leaning more towards a pessimistic view of a situation’s potential outcomes. When given the glass example he would respond saying it was half empty, but that it can be refilled. He does seek to be a voice of calm in heated situations.
Spiritual Characteristics
Religion: Brought up around belief of The Twelve, mainly Halone. Has recently embraced a belief in the Kami as well as Azim and Nhamaa.
Superstitions: Brandt generally believes that it is bad luck to speak ill of the recently departed or tamper with gravesites. Given his recent line of work, Brandt is certain of the paranormal world’s existence.
Virtues: Humility, Patience, Diligence.
Vices: Lust, Wrath, Despair.
Supernatural Characteristics
Ability: As a former Dragoon, Brandt is highly acrobatic, able to leap great distances both vertically and horizontally. He has high aerial control and is able to discharge aether from his body to adjust his trajectory, a skill all Dragoons are taught.He is also able to brace his body against long falls, again in line with all dragoons. Having been “selected” by the Eye of Nidhogg, Brandt also holds the power of the azure dragoon. After a recent episode of influence he has decided to abandon his lance unless the circumstances call for it, opting instead to use an Ironworks-built Gunblade..
Strengths: Brandt is trained in the art of “Critical Combat”, the art of taking down opponents by striking vital points. Brandt is also moderately trained in various forms of swordplay, including as a Gladiator, Hingan Samurai and self-practised Dark Knight. Has some mild shooting ability, but opts instead to use a modified rifle if he has, slashing first and then pulling the trigger.
Weaknesses: As he is blind in one eye, Brandt often has difficulty telling distances accurately, usually taking long times to plan his jumps. Brandt is also unusually pain-tolerant, meaning he often fights on after sustaining heavy injuries and causing him numerous issues. His accuracy with ranged combat is also more or less nil.
Restrictions: Due to his somewhat unique circumstance as an non-ishgardian under influence from Nidhogg, Brandt is more susceptible to corruption by it. His emotions have to be kept in check at most times and after experiencing bouts of great stress, his control over it slips. In order to combat this, he has been given training in various self-control methods, including tutelage on the Darkside and the Inner Beast, giving him a much tighter grip on it.
Likes and Dislikes
Likes: Rainy weather, home cooking (favourite food is Coerthan Casserole), Looking at beautiful scenery, Sake, Hingan cigars, gatherings organised by friends, Taunting.
Dislikes: Heavy snow, oppressive rulers, ridiculously sweet things, people who enforce their ideals on others.
Apparel
Equipment: Brandt always makes sure to hold a concealed knife on his person, otherwise he is usually in possession of his personalised Gunblade.
Wardrobe: Brandt tends to dress in dark tones, most commonly a dull green and black. Stylistically he wears clothing recommended to him by peers leaning towards heavier, warmer clothing but has also taken to wearing traditional Doman clothing. When expecting serious combat situations he will don armour, including that usually worn by Temple Knights.
Social Characteristics
Emotional Stability: Cocky. Due to his early life and training in Ishgard, Brandt is otherwise characteristically stoic. It takes lots to bring him out of his shell, however he is very quick to upset.
Humor: Brandt’s tone of humor is fairly dark, but enjoys most forms of comedy. He cannot abide by speaking ill of the recently deceased however.
Status: Brandt generally tries to keep a low profile in Coerthas as he is considered a deserter by the Holy See’s old regime. Outside of Coerthan jurisdiction, Brandt is an honorary first lieutenant for the Maelstrom due to services rendered and is well known in Othard as a roaming hunter.
School
Education: Brandt was taught to the base standards of education in Ishgard, including literacy and a decent understanding of mathematics. In addition he was given rudimentary lessons in cartography and tracking.
School: Brandt was home-schooled by Ser Ompagne, and given further training in the Ishgardian barracks.
Study Habits: Brandt will often only study while motivated to do so, such as after finding important information or when with a study partner.
Learning Type: Learns best via experience. Teaching him new ways to control his aether takes a heavy amount of effort.

Which OCs that are not yours do you most admire? What is it about that character that you find impressive or engaging?
Thank you for the ask! Also asked by Anon and their friend Another Anon.
"I like all of my mutuals' OCs and find much to admire in all of them" is the short answer. So I won't attempt to list every single OC of every single person I follow and why I admire them, otherwise this post would get even longer than it already will be.
I do particularly admire OCs whose creator has given me such a strong sense of their personality and character that I can envisage how they might respond in a given situation and imagine them doing so in their "voice", so to speak. Strong and distinctive characterisation is always impressive.
Some examples of such OCs include Satien of @nyarumi-nyan, Inxli of @pinxli, Mercer of @furys-mercy, Iris of @irisopranta, Briar of @briar-ffxiv or Shio of @the-littlest-kojin
I also admire OCs with a strong story arc in which I end up getting extremely invested. Characters who aren't preserved in narrative aspic and who grow and change and develop always impress me (I'm not too bad at explaining my OCs journey, but I don't exactly show it much).
Some examples here would be Fennie of @scholarlostintime, Naru of @blucifer08, Hali of @starrysnowdrop, Mizuki of @pumpkinmagekupo and Amon of @spotofmummery (yes for the purposes of this exercise Amon is an OC, don't quibble).
I admire originality (which is not to say I look down on anyone going with something obvious and enjoying the heck out of it) in OC creation - those that have a really unique background, or a highly distinctive voice, or simply represent something that I would never have the skill or creativity to even consider.
Some examples here are Kwas of @peddlestox-shinyrocks, Mari of @cadrenebula, Coconeja of @plenary-indulgence, Flower of @meepsthemiqo, Leo of @healersadjust or Faye of @fair-fae.
And OCs who just dazzle with the coherency of their design and the whole accompanying aesthetic. The kind of OCs who could never be mistaken for anyone else. I can only aspire to such polish and attention to detail.
A few examples of this would be Captain Kuro Solaire of @captainkurosolaire, Drac of @draculas-husband, Silvaineaux of @houserosaire, Bram of @miqomischief, Mirrim of @mirrim-the-moonfaerie or Ki'To of @humblemooncat.
As I say these are examples plucked from a very long list of potential candidates, I would be mortified if anyone were to think that I didn't admire their OC simply because they aren't mentioned here. I really enjoy all the OCs that people share and I never tire of learning more about them.
Although, as a final note, I ought to mention how much I admire Eisha of @umbralaether, for being incredibly well-designed and engaging as a character. Even if her creator does send me difficult Asks!

🌅 - What is your OCs favourite time of day? Are they a morning person or a night owl?
Night owl.
Whether Ahva or Reiko, long nights are spent reading, researching, crafting for more knowledge and a better future, poking at the very fabric of the universe to get answers!
Joking, I just read medical books, and cook bento boxes.
The part about me enjoying the night time was true though. It is when the weather is coolest, the solitude and silence creates the perfect ambience for study. It sometimes get to me, but short lived. There's nothing a cup of tea can't solve.

Prompt#15: Plateau
How to write this letter. There was no way she could face the Goldbrand Captain. No. It was her actions that led....Shaking her head no, trying to erase it. She couldn’t. If I had just not cared about silly fairy tales and romance. Gotten on the damn boat, he’d be here...
Still, everyone was in danger now. The ship’s engine room in ruins. And Sol was gone. Maybe even dead. At the very least, the voidsent had claimed him for now and everyone needed to know. After pacing her workshop over and over picking scales from her tail, she’d plop down on her work-stool, tapping her pen nervously against her journal before finally penning:
Dear Captain Kuro Solaire of the Goldbrand,
Something terrible has happened. I am at fault. Sol was overtaken by Kahzoo. His rune you helped with was purposefully broken by him. I pushed him too far. He was running from me. He destroyed the engine room to his ship and on top of everything else it made me snap. All that work, passion and care and he just destroyed it out of spite.
He left everything to retake the ship’s helm for you in the Captain’s cabin. Although I must tell you, without Kahzoo or the engine room rebuilt, I am not sure how you will get her back up and running. I’m not even sure if my heart can handle currently setting foot in there to rebuild it for you. Nor that you’d want me to. Or to even be around. I can hand over every note and blueprint and caculation I have on her heart.
I am so terribly sorry my actions led towards your childhood friend snapping and deciding that letting a voidsent consume him was a better fate than loving me. I will remain in my office for the next seven suns to give you and your crew time to sort this all out, but after that I might need to retreat from the world for a while. Sol brought me out of my shell but without him around, and with everything that’s happened, I don’t trust people right now and need to retreat.
If you see Sol it’s not him. Be wary. You’ll know I’m telling the truth because the brand is gone. Again I am so sorry. I wish I could make it right. If there’s a punishment, I’ll bare whatever it is pirates do.
I have his gun Silva. I don’t know what to do with it.

Her letter written, she would place it in one of her delivery bots and send it out the window of her sea side apartment. Its sensors seeking out the linkpearl signal of the Goldbrand Captain as her wrist-pad tracked it’s movement. Assuring her at least when it was delivered.
