Generally, we find the people who get their portraits taken with Voyageur have a generous nature. In many cases they wait in line for quite a while, giving us their time. Often they'll say something lovely about the presentation, making me cry, which feels like a gift. And once they get past that first awkward shot and get comfortable with Doug Nicholson behind the camera they give something of themselves to the experience - it's what makes the Six String Nation portrait gallery such an extraordinary collection. Constance Menzies added a little extra something to her generosity that's close to my heart: CHOCOLATE! As Constance Popp she is Winnipeg's pre-eminent chocolatier. And she didn't just give us some of her wonderful truffles during this session at the Assiniboine Park Conservatory, she followed up by sending me some more in the mail after I sent her her photos! Most of us are hurting these days. I've lost all the engagements on my Six String Nation calendar and I worry for when people will be willing to go sit with one another for a presentation or stand in line together and pose one after the other with the same guitar (a guitar that wouldn't take kindly to multiple applications of hand sanitizer at that!) And Constance Popp is another creative business facing some hard times. While many of us may consider chocolate essential, it doesn't quite cut it with health authorities. She has laid off staff and worked to up her internet sales but she's got highstreet rent to pay and the events that give her regular sales bumps have all been cancelled.
