Who Did What for Sonic the Hedgehog's 900th Adventure
So the 900th Adventure was basically this years Annual in spirit, but instead of multiple shorter stories, it told one big story, but with the number of writers and art teams that you would get in a multi-story annual anyways. Sure you could easily read the credits, but it's more fun this way. Obviously spoilers ahead so everything past part 1 is is gonna be under a Read More
Part 1 (pages 1-6): Set-up with Tails
Tumblr media
Writer: Ian Flynn (the original main writer on IDW Sonic and post-Metal Virus continues to be one of the main writers, including being the main writer of IDW's Classic Sonic specials. Been with the franchise since becoming a writer for the Archie comics back in '06 and served as the writer for Sonic Frontiers)
Artist: Adam Bryce Thomas (one of the main IDW Sonic artists. been around since the latter half of Archie's reboot)
Colors: Valentina Pinto (initially a secondary colorist whose biggest credit was doing the Imposter Syndrome miniseries, recently seems to have graduated to being one of the main colorists this year)
Part 2 (pages 7-12): Amy and the Orca
Tumblr media
Writer/Artist: Evan Stanley (the other main writer of IDW Sonic post-Metal Virus as well as one of the main artists, been around since late in Archie's pre-reboot era)
Colors: Gigi Dutreix (regular cover artist and occasional inker and has even written a few stories; co-authoring Victory Garden from the 2019 Annual and its follow up Future Growth, which they also colored, and solo-writing The Catalyst from 2020's Annual)
Part 3 (pages 13-18): Knuckles and Metal Sonic
Tumblr media
Writer: Nigel Kitching (one of the main writers of the old UK Sonic the Comic published by Fleetway Editions back in the 90s)
Artist: Mauro Fonseca (regular artist, major credits so far include Sonic Learns to Drive from the 30th Anniversary Special, co-designing Surge & Kit, doing the A-covers for the Imposter Syndrome miniseries, and doing a bunch of stuff in the concurrent and upcoming main book issues. Also relevantly used to be a regular contributor to the Sonic the Comic-Online fan continuation)
Inks: Rik Mack (recent regular inker, being the main inker on Mauro's more recent interior art for the comic as well as inking other artists, most notably on Tails' 30th Anniversary Special. Recently did some coloring on the back-half of issue 61 as well. Also another former StC-O regular)
Colors: Reggie Graham (one of the main colorists on IDW Sonic post-Metal Virus, after having been a regular on covers beforehand, as well as being another former StC-O regular)
Part 4 (pages 19-24): Eggman and his Mech
Tumblr media
Writer: Daniel Barnes (writer of Weapons from the 2022 Annual and the Scrapnik Island miniseries)
Artist/Colors: Min Ho Kim (fairly recent addition of the IDW Sonic crew, being a regular cover artist since Scrapnik #1. Also the character artist on The Murder of Sonic)
Color Assistance: Evan Maly
Part 5 (pages 25-30): Blaze and Cream
Tumblr media
Writer/Artist: Aaron Hammerstrom (regular artist, most prominently being the main artist for IDW's Classic Sonic stuff. Also previously wrote/drew the 2022 Annual story Rough Patch)
Inks: Matt Froese (regular inker, mainly works on Aaron's art. Most notable non-Aaron credits include the two Yardley-drawn issues of Zeti Hunt and the first and last parts of Trial by Fire)
Colors: Nathalie Fourdraine (The 1:10 Retailer Incentive variant cover artist for every issue the main book as well as semi-regularly doing covers for side books. Served as the colorist for the Classic Sonic stories Dr. Eggman's Brithday and Amy's New Hobby, as well as the colors and A covers for the Scrapnik Island miniseries)
Part 6 (pages 31-36): Babylon Rogues & Shadow/Rouge
Tumblr media
Writer: Caleb Goellner (writer of the Team Sonic Racing one-shot, the 2019 Annual story Jet Set Tornado, and the 2020 Annual story Reflections)
Artist: Abby Bulmer (regular cover artist, as well as artist of the 2020 Annual story The Catalyst and the 2022 Annual story Hero Camp. Notably way back in the day was the artist of the very first StC-O story, and her time on 2000 AD often involved her serving as a colorist for Richard Elson, one of the main StC artists.)
Colors: Heather Breckel (IDW MLP's main colorist, who's been a recurring secondary colorist throughout IDW Sonic's run, often filling in for other colorists)
Part 7 (pages 37-40): The Warp Topaz Cave

Shadow's bit in the 900th Adventure is hilarious to me because all the anti-IDW chuds were propping up Caleb Goellner as superior to Flynn because he supposedly "takes orders from Sega without pushback" and "writes Shadow as he's intended".
Then he comes out and writes the cringiest Shadow dialogue in history for this "franchise celebration" issue.
Whoops.

Review: Ghost Cage #2
By Dustin Cabeal
I wanted to start off with a joke about my interest in this comic being used up like natural resources, but I’m afraid the quality hits too close to home for this comic. Nick Dragotta is a talented artist. I could stare at the pages of this comic all day as they are wonderful. The visuals of the mecha/monster versions of energy resources are still a wonderful idea on paper, but the story execution has delved into predictable and erratic.
Predictable you say? Yes, it was not even remotely a surprise that it was crazy old guy’s daughter. Less surprising was the fact that crazy old guy is alive and looks shittier than his hologram self. I saw Prometheus as well, this isn’t new. It doesn’t have to be new, but the story does very little to make it relevant. We’ve had a handful of panels with the daughter, but I’m supposed to care about her reveal? Why? I don’t. I barely like Doyle and she won’t stop talking so would I care about a daughter character?
And everything with Doyle becomes less and less interesting as its developed. The one co-worker we’ve been introduced to is killed by page 3 or 4 after confessing his love for her. I laughed. I assumed that was the emotion that the creators were going for because its frankly stupid otherwise. If it’s not played for humor, then I don’t understand the tone of this comic. Actually, I don’t understand the tone of this comic. Is it all being play for a laugh? Doyle tells us she doesn’t have time for love which makes dudes death seem all the more pointless. She lost the farm and is working to earn it back. Her loyalty is being exploited and spit back at her from Holo-dad invalidating her entire character motivation. Two issues in I might add. I still don’t know her or like her as character. The other characters are not likeable, but that doesn’t make Doyle likable by default. I’m not rooting for her because she’s less shitty.
Another reason that I can’t wrap my head around the tone is the wind creature Quixote. Great play on the story and a well-developed character right out the gate. He’s likable, his motivation and exit from the story are all moving and fitting for what is introduced for the character. It’s not fitting with the rest of the story. It doesn’t match the reveal of the daughter who goes from assassin to daddy issues in the course of taking her helmet off.
There are two stories fighting each other here, which makes sense given there’s two writers. One has a sick sense of humor and wants crazy battles with energy monsters. The other wants to go into the geopolitical nature of energy around the world, what it means to the people and planet and where it’s going in the future. Cyclops future energy guy is that future and he’s done nothing to make me believe in him.
At first the idea of fighting energy monsters was clever and interesting, but there’s so much exposition and pompousness to the writing that it’s no longer the case. It’s trying to sound smart and failing to do so because the story isn’t strong enough. There is no focus, and the pace is frantic. These two underdeveloped issues could easily be five to six well developed issues. I feel like at this point he’s going to fight Solar and Batteries who are somehow twins or lovers in the next issue.
The art is gorgeous. Again, I could stare at this book all day and find it enjoyable, but it’s not fun to read. I feel preached out and all I wanted was to see the Eyeball fight some cool monsters. I want to like Doyle, but as she continues to talk, I end up thinking, “no one is this stupid right?” Even the ghost mascot is looking at her like she’s a bit to thick in the head. Love it or hate it, but there’s little chance of me coming back for more of Ghost Cage. If you find yourself digging it, that’s great, just don’t waste your breath telling me why.

Note
It's been said before but the "mandates" are probably specific to shitty writers and they don't bother doing it for competent ones like Daniel Barnes who would be more inclined to respect their wishes anyway.
Both Daniel Barnes and Caleb Goellner have been reported to have had a much easier time working with SEGA on the comics they had the chance to work on under the IDW Sonic umbrella.
Caleb, in particular, has been outright stated (in the very comic he worked on, no less) to have been such a skilled writer that he himself never once had any notes towards his portrayals of the characters.
Soooo, what does it say about the comic when both Barnes and Goellner have little-to-no issues working with SEGA, but Flynn and Stanley often do?

A collective sigh of relief for Sonic and friends – 2019 Annual
So maybe you’re a new comic book reader or a parent looking into IDW’s Sonic book for your child. “Annuals” are extra long special release books that come out once a year and may or may not tie into the storyline going on in the main book. The Sonic 2019 Annual fits between issues 12 and 13, after the Metal Sonic story arc but before the Metal Virus saga.
It contains five child-friendly and heartwarming stories in the Sonic world with colorful art and some fan-favorite characters.
Bonds of Friendship
The first story in this collection opens not with Sonic but with our new comic-exclusive characters.
Whisper visits Tangle in Spiral Hill Village and is introduced to Jewel the Beetle, Tangle’s childhood friend. She and Jewel used to go on little adventures together and collected a number of gems and treasures, which Jewel now displays in a museum she is the curator of.
Tumblr media
Just as the girls are all getting acquainted, the Babylon Rogues break in and raid the place. Storm accidentally abducts Jewel, thinking that she is actually a giant gemstone. Tangle and Whisper team up to save her and in the process humiliate the Babylon Rogues and get the gems back.
All in all, a very charming and cute adventure that doesn’t overstay its welcome.
Also, as a fan, it’s nice to see the Babylon Rogues return since they’ve always been exclusive to the Sonic Riders series. We did see Sonic and Knuckles ride their extreme gear in the Battle for Angel Island, so we could infer that Riders is included in the continuity but this really seals it.
Tumblr media
Being penned by Ian Flynn, this story serves mainly to flesh out more of Tangle’s backstory and to develop her close relationship with Whisper going forward. Having just introduced these characters less than a dozen issues ago in the comic’s run, they’re the ones most in need of new content so it makes sense.
Also Jewel will be an important character going forward, so readers would benefit from seeing her debut in 2019 Annual before digging into the next story arc.
The art by Jennifer Hernandez was much more charming in this story than it was in “Fallout!” and I think her art style was better suited to this kind of jokey adventure.
Tumblr media
Jet Set Tornado
Sonic and Tails go for a test flight on the Tornado with a new booster rocket attached. In a unique twist, Sonic is piloting the biplane instead of Tails because Sonic is better suited to maneuvering at high speed. Plus, it’s a nice reminder that the Tornado was actually Sonic’s plane, not Tails’.
Their test flight is interrupted by a badnik but the two manage to take the winged machine down and fly off into the sunset. Sonic asks Tails to take over the yoke because it’s more relaxing for him to ride. Besides, you have to go slow to land.
Tumblr media
This story was great for showing Sonic and Tails’ close relationship and how much they believe in each other. Writer Caleb Goellner managed to squeeze a charming story into very few pages and artist Jack Lawrence effectively used a clean art style and uncluttered panels to communicate all the needed visual information without any of it looking simplistic.
Victory Garden
This one is by far my favorite story of the bunch.
Blaze the Cat goes looking for Silver the Hedgehog in the ruins of a town, presumably one bombed during the Eggman War. She finds him trying to plant a garden in a crater, but Silver isn’t having any luck with it.
Tumblr media
Blaze uses her fire powers to burn the weeds away and then tells Silver to turn the ashes into the soil to nourish his garden and sure enough, he soon has a flourishing garden of sunflowers, tomatoes, and carrots.
This story is both somber and heartwarming. And it re-establishes the friendship between Silver and Blaze. Longtime fans will know that their relationship is a bit canonically muddled, but they make a good team so I’m glad to see their friendship rebooted here.
Tumblr media
I also loved that Blaze would know the role fire can have in renewing plant life, considering her magical attunement to fire. Silver, coming from a post-apocalyptic future, would naturally be attracted to gardens and vibrant plant life but wouldn’t know the first thing about gardening.
Curse of the Pyramid
Tumblr media
Our bandits, Rough and Tumble, search for Eggman’s pyramid base and the treasure that waits within.
They don’t expect to run into Rouge the Bat! She’s searching for the same thing, of course, because of her addiction to jewels. Tumble tries to throw her off their trail using his powerful stink but while running away from Rouge stumbles into the Egg Golem (from Sonic Adventure 2!)
Tumblr media
While the goons fight the Golem, Rouge goes to find the control unit to disable it but stumbles onto something else! She comes back covered in mummy bandages warning them of the pyramid’s curse!
Rough and Tumble run for it and then it’s revealed that Rouge isn’t actually cursed, she just dressed as a mummy to scare the idiots off. It turns out a group of animals moved into the pyramid after Eggman moved out and they use the “curse” to ward off thieves.
I think it’s hilarious that Eggman is constantly building these unique bases all over the world, and even hides treasure in some of them, but will abandon them at the drop of a hat.
I also like when Sonic characters use their more unique abilities in fun ways because it’s one of the series’ strengths. Even among children’s media, most don’t have a colorful cast both this large and with varied powers. Seeing Rough and Tumble actually use their stink as skunks makes perfect sense and gives them a unique attack when needed.
Sonic Fan Club
The last story of the 2019 annual is a meeting of the Sonic the Hedgehog fan club.
Tumblr media
The meeting quickly devolves into a struggle for power as the kids argue about who should be club president. They begin trying to embody different virtues of Sonic to prove they deserve to be president.
They go for a foot race to see who’s the fastest, roll into balls just like Sonic, and fight a badnik to prove they’re brave like Sonic.
The Egg Pawn proves to be too much for them to handle and Tangle steps in to help. Of course, Tangle says they should have a Tangle fan club instead but because she got too distracted, she ends up tangling herself up in her tail and humiliating herself.
As a kid who grew up with Sonic, there’s nothing more charming than the idea of a bunch of kids having a Sonic fan club. I had a stupid grin on my face for the entire story.
The Verdict
The 2019 Annual is a cute little special to pick up but maybe not required reading for IDW Sonic. Kids could pick up this book and understand everything going on without any of the context of the previous 12 issues, but it will enrich their reading going forward.

what r ur thoughts on metal sonic
God, he's so cool. Metal Sonic is an effortlessly sleek character. His design has aged so well. In both conception and execution, he's fascinating. If there weren't so many good Sonic characters competing for my attention already, he'd be one of my favourites.
Metal Sonic is the original not-Sonic. He was designed by Doctor Eggman to be this perfect weapon --- to take Sonic's finest qualities and not only turn them against him, but improve upon them. Machines do not tire, or sass you, or possess pesky little things like "free will". That's the idea, anyways.
Of course, Metal Sonic isn't really better than Sonic, is he?
He is a real threat. He can easily go toe-to-toe with Sonic. But he's only a simulacrum of the original. A copy. No matter how many times he fights Sonic, no matter how hard he or Eggman try to improve upon his programming, he'll never quite measure up. Sonic will always win in the end.
This ties in nicely with the environmentalist themes of the Sonic series. As a robot, Metal Sonic is undermined by the very things thought to make him an improvement. He does not have Sonic's level of free will, or his thirst for adventure, or his love of helping others, all of which empower Sonic to keep fighting when things are down to the wire. Sonic's speed is a natural part of him, whereas Metal Sonic is propelled by circuitry and engines, things particularly susceptible to overheating and self-destruction when ran at high speeds over a long period of time.
Metal Sonic was created to destroy Sonic, and yet, he never will be able to fulfill this purpose. He'll never be "as good" as the real thing. This leaves him in a bit of an existential pickle. He externalizes these feelings of existential dread by challenging Sonic, attempting to surpass and defeat him, and to prove himself superior to his progenitor once and for all. He pursues this goal with a ruthless vengeance. My favourite Metal Sonic content, though, is the stuff that approaches Metal from a more introspective angle.
"Reflections" from the IDW 2020 annual comes to mind immediately when talking about quality Metal Sonic content. I'm not breaking new ground with this take, but it's absolutely worth mentioning anyways. Written by Caleb Goellner with art by Aaron Hammerstrom and Reggie Graham, it's this incredibly striking little story with almost no dialogue. It conveys Metal's mental state and existential discomfort with being an inhuman copy of Sonic really well! Just thinking about it is giving me shivers. AAH.
Tumblr media
LOOK AT IT! LOOK AT HIM! The poor little guy... er, I mean, the poor little evil killer robot.
Oh well. I adore the "guy who has identity issues over being not being Sonic" trope to no end. It gets me every time. A lot of my feelings surrounding Metal are amplified in the context of, say, Shard, who's this Metal Sonic trying to define himself and be a hero in his own right (despite that fact that he has a limited understanding of how to do that beyond copying Sonic). Now there's a poor little guy for you. But Shard is a can of worms that could deserve his own post entirely.
Anyways, I love Metal. He's a really neat dude with a lot of potential. I hope more Sonic writers moving forwards take advantage of the more introspective angles to his character. I always enjoy seeing that kind of thing explored in media. Thank you for the ask!

I'll admit I'm not interested in Scrapnik Island despite all the praise it's received (the art is nicer than that of the main comic, but as a rule of thumb, I don't like "Badniks turning good/sort-of-good" stories outside of Gamma... especially nowadays, since they just remind me of Belle lol), but I can respect that Barnes appears to be a humble guy who is grateful for his position, unlike Flynn, Yardley. Mauro, etc.
Admittedly I also read the first 3 issues without much attention, and skipped the 4th one. I was alienated by the horror setup of the first issue (it's just... really weird to see Sonic terrified out of his mind when he was totally chill during Night of the Werehog), although the art is absolutely phenomenal.
Good for Barnes. He seems to be a nice guy :) or at the very least, much more professional than his peers. And now we have proof of two, read, two IDW writers who apparently didn't have any problem with SEGA! Caleb Goellner says hi:

Oh. But will you look at that :)
