Toni Braxton - You're Makin' Me High
1996
Toni Michele Braxton is an American R&B singer, songwriter, actress and television personality. She has sold over 70 million records worldwide and is one of the best-selling female artists in history. Braxton has won seven Grammy Awards, nine Billboard Music Awards, seven American Music Awards, and numerous other accolades. In 2011, Braxton was inducted into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame. In 2017 she was honored with the Legend Award at the Soul Train Music Awards.
"You're Makin' Me High" is the lead single from her second studio album, Secrets (1996). The mid-tempo song represents a joint collaboration between the Grammy Award-winning producer Babyface and Bryce Wilson. The beat of the song was originally for singer-songwriter Brandy, with Dallas Austin pegged to write a lyric to override; however, Braxton had Babyface write lyrics for the song. It was ultimately issued in the US as a double A-side with "Let It Flow", the airplay hit from the 1995 film Waiting to Exhale.
"You're Makin' Me High" became Braxton's first number-one single on both the US Billboard Hot 100 and Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs charts; it remained on top for one week on the former and for two weeks on the latter, eventually going Platinum. A remix by David Morales with re-recorded vocals allowed the single to also top the Dance Club Songs chart for two weeks in August 1996.
The song earned Braxton her third Grammy Award for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance in 1997. The success of "You're Makin' Me High" would later be continued with the release of the smash hit "Un-Break My Heart", which peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 for 11 consecutive weeks, while topping the charts in several other countries.
"You're Makin' Me High" was sampled for Method Man & Redman's 2001 song "Part II", from the How High soundtrack. In 2014, Anglo-American producer/DJ Secondcity sampled a part of the song's bridge for the main hook of his UK number-one single "I Wanna Feel".
The accompanying music video for "You're Makin' Me High", directed by Bille Woodruff, features Braxton and a group of friends consisting of actresses Erika Alexander, Vivica A. Fox, and Tisha Campbell-Martin.
"You're Makin' Me High" received a total of 60,2% yes votes!

I miss you both so much, and you’re not even born yet. Your mom said you’re giving her a hard time, not letting her sleep, rolling around at all hours. I told her that tracks, considering you’re coming from her and I. We’ve been at base camp for a week and a half now. It’s beautiful and strange. Too many people up here, I keep saying it wasn’t like this when we first came out here, and it wasn’t. Beautiful, but strange in a different way. There’s a sixteen-year-old in one of the other groups here with her father. Eddie asked me if I’d do that with you - I told him I wouldn’t let you get anywhere near this place. You’ll just have to do with my descriptions until you’re old enough to rebel against us. It’s like another planet, I thought that the first time I came here, and I still think it. You never feel like you get a whole breath in - you’re always looking for more air - it’s thin and dry. You feel weak because of it for the first few weeks, like your arms and legs can’t work fast enough. But it is beautiful, one of the best things I’ve ever seen. The ice glitters it’s so bright, and if you look too long at it you can go blind. The snow moves with the wind, makes sounds like thunder when sheets of it break off and collapse down the sides of the mountains. It’s a wild place, but it’s changing. Too many people out here, I’m glad this is my last season - I don’t even want to imagine what it’ll be like when you’re old enough to think about going. We’ll find something better to do.

Braxton Alexander: Three heterosexual boyfriends, three serial killers, one saxophone, and five bare butts
Born in 2007, actor and model Braxton Alexander had a busy child star career. Strangely, although of course he had no control over the scripts at age eight or nine, his movies and tv shows seem overwhelmingly heteronormative, if not downright homophobic.
Four episodes of Mr. Mercedes (2017) as the young Brady Hartsfield, living through the horrific childhood that would turn him into a homophobic mass murderer with psychic powers. (Left: Harry Treadaway, who plays the adult Brady)
The young Callahan in Tag (2018), about a group of friends who play an elaborate game of tag every year, while not making homophobic jokes and fielding gay panic. The young Callahan kisses a girl. So you can have boys and girls sparking at each other from the womb, but heaven forbid depicting a gay kid.
Dolly Parton's Christmas on the Square (2020) is intensely heteronormative: the meaning of life is boys and girls gazing at each other forever. Brax (bottom) plays a singer.
The Black Phone (2021) is about a gay predator who kidnaps young boys (I'm not kidding). Brax plays a bully, not one of the victims.
In I Want You Back (2022), a dumped boyfriend and girlfriend try to sabotage their exes' new relationships and get them back. Brax plays a "middle school boyfriend."
The Summer I Turned Pretty (2022-4) features two brothers in love with a girl named Belly. Brax plays the young Conrad, falling for Belly at the age of 13
In Black Bird (2022), not to be confused with Blackbird, Jimmy Keane (Taron Egerton, left) is given the task of befriending a suspected serial killer to get a confession out of him. No gay subtext: the guys both display an incessant interest in ladies. Brax plays the teenage Jimmy.
Braxton's favorite role to date is on Season 3 of The Righteous Gemstones, probably because he didn't play a young serial killer. Art student Trent becomes Judy's high school crush. When she unsuccessfully tries to flirt by draping her hair over his desk, he cuts some off. Later she bursts into band practice and destroys his saxophone.
Then Jesse gets revenge by breaking into the school dressed as Slenderman and bashing Trent's face with a cymbal.
Surprisingly, that doesn't knock him out or kill him. Next Jesse shaves his head and pantses him. The other students all point and laugh. An artist and a musician? I wonder if Trent was written as gay.
Recently Brax has been concentrating on his modeling career. Hopefully it will be a bit more gay-positive.

Appearance: Her hair color is black and blonde. The hairstyles she wears is bohemian braids. If she don’t wear braids she wears her hair in an Afro that is very thick and long. She wears beanies everywhere she goes since that’s her signature look. Luna wear vintage band tees as well as TV shows tees. Rip jeans and slit skirts are her favorite jeans/skirts to wear. Luna wears big round sunglasses when she’s on stage and offstage. It helps ease her anxiety when she has to sing on stage or talk to people off stage. So that way you won’t see how nervous she is (eyes tell all). Combat boots and converse’s are her go to shoes. Luna always wear black or red leather jackets. Since it’s the bands signature color. On stage she would wear heavy makeup. When she’s not on stage she would just wear mascara and nude lip gloss.

While Seven would call her Lulu or songbird. (He mostly call her Lulu since he like teasing her with that nickname). She gets annoyed when he call her Lulu but he’s the only one that is allowed to call her that.
After the breakup let’s say it impacted her greatly. She would stay locked up in her studio looking at pictures of the two them. She still has the tattoo of seven initials that she never got rid of. When Luna is out in public she never cover it up since it’s very meaningful to her. One day while she was practicing on her violin. She started listening
to a song entitled: Blame’s on me by Alexander Stewart. Luna stopped what she was doing and listened to the entire song. She quickly grabbed her notebook and pen and started writing lyrics about him entitled:

I’m begging for when Y/N and Nico have their baby
It was the conference finals and you were up in the box with the rest of Nico’s family. You’d gone on maternity leave early, not wanting you and your big bump to be in the way.
Your due date was two days ago but your son wasn’t showing any signs of joining you yet. That was until the second period, of course, when your Braxton-hicks contractions you’ve been experiencing for days started getting worse.
Nina is the first one that notices your discomfort. “Y/n, are you alright?”
“I’m fine.” You smile at her as you place your hands on your bump, silently telling your son to wait for the end of his dad’s game. “He’s just moving around a lot today.”
“He’s excited for his papa.” Nico’s father says as you stand up, hoping moving around will help.
As Nico gets on the ice for his shift, Dougie passes the puck from deep in the defensive zone, giving Nico a breakaway. The entire box gets to their feet as you watch your fiancé deke the goalie and score.
Luca turns to you to give you a high-five but stops when he sees the look on your face. “Is it time?”
“My water just broke.” You confirm as you feel the wetness on your legs.
It’s chaos as the family gets you out of the box. All of them extensively getting grilled this morning about your birth plan by Nico did nothing to prepare them for the excitement.
You plead with them not to tell Nico until the game is over, not wanting to pull him away from the biggest game of his career so far.
You’re in active labor by the time he gets to your hospital room, still wearing some of his hockey gear. “I’ve been waiting for him for days. He couldn’t wait another period?”
You start to laugh but it comes out as a strangled cry as another contraction hits. Nico rushes to your side, holding your hand and pushing your hair out of your face as you breathe through it. “You got him excited with that goal.”
Nico smiles and kisses your forehead. “I love you so much.”
A strong contraction rips through you as the doctor walks into the room. “Who’s ready to have a baby?” You’re terrified as you look at Nico but he just smiles at you and squeezes your hand. If he’s by your side you can do anything.
After twenty minutes of pushing, Nico cuts the umbilical cord and holds your crying baby for the first time. There’s tears in his eyes as he walks over to you. “That’s your mama, Alexander Luca. Isn’t she beautiful? We’re the luckiest guys in the world.”

Rodrigo Amado The Bridge — Beyond The Margins (Trost)
Sonny Rollins named The Bridge after the Williamsburg where he practiced during a three-year long retreat from public performance that he undertook in order to secure his chops. Rodrigo Amado did not engage in any sabbatical so lengthy before he put together this quartet, but its formation still reflects the pursuit of artistic growth. The amount of experience around him is so formidable that just dropping their names — Alexander Von Schlippenbach, Gerry Hemingway, Ingebrigt Håker Flaten — speaks volumes. This is what someone does when, like Rollins, they don’t just think about riding the present wave of fortune. They’re in it for the long haul.
One might apply that description to the music that Schlippenbach has played with his legendary trio, or Hemingway did in his diverse partnerships with Anthony Braxton and Reggie Workman, or that Håker Flaten has in the never-ending story that adds a new chapter every time he takes a stage with Paal Nilssen-Love. It’s music that builds upon itself, applying knowledge acquired over decades of return engagements.
One might also, in a different way, apply that description to the music on this record. Recorded in concert at Pardon Tu Tu, in Warsaw, it’s a study in the practice and payoffs of building a performance on an elongated timeline. The title tracks lasts just over 40 minutes, during which the musicians declare allegiances, explore contrasting territories and build to several escalating climaxes. As remarkable as the peaks is the way the ensemble eases away from them each time, taking the pressure down so that the music never exhausts itself. The two pieces that follow are relatively brief, not quite eight minutes each, and their compactness makes them feel like gradual resolutions of that grand main act.
But this music rewards at the micro as well as macro levels. At any given moment, Håker Flaten and Hemingway can each be heard orchestrating contrasting vectors of energy that surge and shake, but never break, the performance’s rhythmic foundation. Schlippenbach interjects both professorial reminders – “don’t forget the Monk, lads” – and door-opening actions that can turn the action around in a moment. Amado remains true to his fundamentals, drawing out muscular lines and dipping into lyrical asides. But he also draws sustenance from the forces swirling around him, blowing with spectacular intensity and poised restraint, each phrase as compelling as the developmental arc it supports.
