How is it possible that the most romantic thing I’ve seen in a while ends up being L&O:SVU? Bradley Whitfield is my favorite everything acting out the beginning of Up and making me tear up juuuust a little. The first time SVU has ever caused happy tears.

(Was it Britney Spears? Donna had said it was Britney Spears. Josh had said, “I have no idea who that is”, but Donna had said Britney Spears, hadn’t she?)
Anyway, it definitely hadn’t been the night he’d broken his window. He knew that for certain, because that was the night that he had had enough, the night that he couldn’t take it anymore. So it must have started long before then."

The 73rd Emmy Awards nominations were announced by father/daughter duo Ron Cephas Jones (THIS IS US) and Jasmine Cephas Jones (Starz’s BLINDSPOTTING, HAMILTON).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Surely it was a good morning for Jasmine as her fiancé Anthony Ramos
Tumblr media
and their HAMILTON costars Lin-Manual Miranda, Leslie Odom Jr., Daveed Diggs, Jonathan Groff, Phillipa Soo and Renée Elise Goldsberry  were nominated thanks to the production being released on Disney+ .
Tumblr media
Many fans were happy for Goldsberry’s nod but felt she should have also been nominated for her role in Peacock’s GIRLS 5EVA
Tumblr media
The most jarring category nomination was Don Cheadle’s nomination (his eleventh!) for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series for his 98 seconds (literally, 98 seconds) appearance in THE FALCON AND THE WINTER SOLDIER.  The worst of it is that he didn’t snag a nomination for his actual Showtime series BLACK MONDAY, a role he’s been twice nominated for.
Many people...had thoughts.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Don’t hate the player, hate the game.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Other nominations and snubs...
THE FALCON AND THE WINTER SOLDIER and HAMILTON was not the only Disney+ content to get nods, WANDAVISION was recognized with Elizabeth Olson, Kathryn Hahn and Paul Bettany all snagging nominations.
Lizzie’s husband breaking the good news.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Bettany was also chuffed to find out that his Amazon Prime film - the richly deserving UNCLE FRANK - was also nominated in the category of Outstanding TV Movie.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
THE MANDALORIAN also received nominations
Tumblr media
The majority of THE MANDALORIAN’s nominations were in the technical realm but the show did garner three acting nominations: Carl Weathers, Giancarlo Esposito and that silver fox Timothy Olyphant.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When I think about how he was only nominated once for JUSTIFIED and zero times for Netflix’s THE SANTA CLARITA DIET I want to scream.
- A galaxy far, far away from Obi Wan Kenobi in characterization is Halston but Ewan McGregor embodied the (in)famous designer perfectly and got an Emmy nomination for it.
Tumblr media
Just another great thing to happen this year to McGregor as he and his FARGO and BIRDS OF PREY partner Mary Elizabeth Winstead welcomed their first child, son Laurie.
Laurie with three of his four sisters: Clara, Esther and Jamyan.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
-This was a very good year for first season shows as evident by the nomination of Apple+’s TED LASSO whose 20 nominations broke GLEE’s first season record for nods.
As Interpol sang, “there’s no ‘I’ in threesome”, there’s also no ‘I’ in team as the nominations just wasn’t for series creator and lead Jason Sudeikis but Hannah Waddingham, Juno Temple, Brett Goldstein and the Diamond Dogs: Nick Mohammed, Jeremy Swift and Brendan Hunt.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Juno has said that she would like to walk the red carpet with Hannah. Hopefully they can recreate Hannah’s Golden Globe winning night.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Phil Dunster (Jamie Tartt do-do-do-do) reacts.
Tumblr media
As does Toheeb Jimoh (Sam Obisanya)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
- Like TED LASSO, Hulu’s THE HANDMAID’S TALE had many nominations across the cast with Elisabeth Moss, Yvonne Strahovski, Samira Wiley, Madeline Brewer, Max Minghella, Ann O’Dowd, Alexis Bleidel, Bradley Whitford and newcomer to the show McKenna Grace all receiving nominations.  The glaring omission? Joseph Fiennes who gave a gloriously sinister performance this season.
As for snubs, I (try) not to go with my heart and classify omissions from shows/actors I love as a snub (though IT’S A SIN, THE GOOD LORD BIRD and its cast was robbed), I go by who was being pushed during The Hollywood Reporter’s roundtables.  In that vein: John Boyega and the entire SMALL AXE crew were snubbed, after being nominated and winning various awards; Chris Rock for FARGO, which only managed to get technical nominations despite winning performances by Jesse Buckley, Jason Schwartzman and Ben Whishaw.
Tumblr media
No nomination for Lena Waithe on her season of MASTER OF NONE. She has previously shared a writing Emmy for that show.  Also locked out was Sarah Paulson for Netflix’s RATCHET.
Tumblr media
Though Paulson’s costar Sophie Okonedo garnered a nomination.
Tumblr media
While not honored this year, Paulson saluted her friend and AMERICAN HORROR STORY costar Evan Peters on his first Emmy nomination for his supporting role in MARE OF EASTTOWN.
Tumblr media
While various awards bodies are always throwing nominations Nicole Kidman’s way, including the Emmys, she missed out on a nomination this year for THE UNDOING. However her costar Hugh Grant received one.
Tumblr media
While not snubbed in nominations, many feel that HBO snubbed LOVECRAFT COUNTRY with cancelling it after one season - a season that has garnered 18 nominations.
Tumblr media
The show has received technical nominations, as well as acting for stars Courtney B. Vance, Michael K. Williams, Aunjanue Ellis, Jurnee Smollett and Jonathan Majors.

Emmy Nominations 2021: Vanity Fair Predicts Who Will Win
A close look at every award that will be handed out during Sunday night’s broadcast, from an intense actress showdown to the potential for history to be made.
After a year of television that felt more than a little unusual given the pandemic that surrounded it, the 2021 Emmy Awards will be an opportunity to celebrate the shows that got us through, whether via fantastical escapism, well-costumed romance, or the optimistic wisdom of a certain football coach. Just like last year, Vanity Fair’s experts have their eyes on a specific trio of shows—this year it’s The Crown, Ted Lasso, and The Queen’s Gambit—to take home the bulk of the prizes, but there is also plenty of room for surprise. Will The Handmaid’s Tale be the comeback kid? Will the final season of Pose soar to the top? Was it really Agatha all along? Read ahead to find out, and tune in to the Emmy Awards on Sunday night to see if we got it right.
A guide to Hollywood’s biggest races
DRAMA SERIES
The Boys Bridgerton PREDICTED WINNER: The Crown The Handmaid’s Tale Lovecraft Country The Mandalorian Pose This Is Us
In the culmination of its long, triumphant awards season, Netflix’s The Crown should finally win the top prize for its acclaimed fourth season. The period drama has won every equivalent precursor, from awards given by key industry guilds like the PGA and SAG to those given by notable outside groups at the Critics’ Choice Awards and Golden Globes, and found an entirely new audience with its rich rendering of the Charles-Diana saga. In the time since its airing, a serious challenger has not emerged to overtake it, even with the support for Pose’s final season or the sheer popularity of The Mandalorian. It’s time for The Crown to finally take the, well, you know. —David Canfield
ACTOR IN A DRAMA SERIES
Sterling K. Brown, This Is Us Jonathan Majors, Lovecraft Country PREDICTED WINNER: Josh O’Connor, The Crown Regé-Jean Page, Bridgerton Billy Porter, Pose Matthew Rhys, Perry Mason
Tighter than it first appeared, this race comes down to two very different contenders. The smart money may actually be on Billy Porter, considering the overall Emmy performance of Pose for its final season—the FX drama has already won three trophies this year via the Creative Arts awards—and the fact that Porter has already won this category. He’s nominated again for a true showcase of a season that’s hard to deny. But as Schitt’s Creek proved last year, the Emmys love a sweep, and The Crown—with its deep ensemble and clear overall front-runner status—looks tailor-made for one. Josh O’Connor stepping into the series’ center with his indelible Prince Charles is likely to find embrace amid the wave. —David Canfield
ACTRESS IN A DRAMA SERIES
Uzo Aduba, In Treatment Olivia Colman, The Crown PREDICTED WINNER: Emma Corrin, The Crown Elisabeth Moss, The Handmaid’s Tale Mj Rodriguez, Pose Jurnee Smollett, Lovecraft Country
Emma Corrin’s devastating breakout turn as Princess Diana sits comfortably atop this list—which feels a bit strange to say, given that she’s surrounded by awards heavyweights like Oscar winner (and costar!) Olivia Colman and multi-Emmy winners Uzo Aduba and Elisabeth Moss. But so it goes. And in fact, her chief competition is probably another first-time nominee—Mj Rodriguez, repping the surging Pose and having already made history as the first trans nominee in the category’s existence. Will voters jump at the opportunity to make even more history? It’s a long shot, but don’t count her out. —David Canfield
SUPPORTING ACTOR IN A DRAMA SERIES
Giancarlo Esposito, The Mandalorian O-T Fagbenle, The Handmaid’s Tale John Lithgow, Perry Mason Tobias Menzies, The Crown Max Minghella, The Handmaid’s Tale Chris Sullivan, This Is Us Bradley Whitford, The Handmaid’s Tale PREDICTED WINNER: Michael K. Williams, Lovecraft Country
Voting closed before the tragic passing of Michael K. Williams on September 6, but the actor, whose work included The Wire and Boardwalk Empire, was already predicted to win this award for his performance in HBO’s now canceled Lovecraft Country. Winners of this category are often well-respected veteran actors (Peter Dinklage, Ben Mendelsohn, John Lithgow) who voters seem to be honoring not only for their current project, but their entire body of work. And that would be the case for Williams—a five-time Emmy nominee—this time around. It would be a bittersweet way to remember a beloved member of the acting community who created some of TV’s most memorable and vulnerable characters. —Rebecca Ford
SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A DRAMA SERIES
PREDICTED WINNER: Gillian Anderson, The Crown Madeline Brewer, The Handmaid’s Tale Helena Bonham Carter, The Crown Ann Dowd, The Handmaid’s Tale Aunjanue Ellis, Lovecraft Country Emerald Fennell, The Crown Yvonne Strahovski, The Handmaid’s Tale Samira Wiley, The Handmaid’s Tale
Dowd won in 2017 for her work on The Handmaid’s Tale, but with this crowded category stacked with her costars from the show, they’ll likely split the votes. And Anderson has always been the front-runner anyway for her transformative performance as Margaret Thatcher in the fourth season of the Netflix series. She already won the Globe earlier this year, and in all likelihood will beat out her own costars to take the Emmy as well. —Rebecca Ford
DIRECTING FOR A DRAMA SERIES
Bridgerton, “Diamond of the First Water,” Julie Anne Robinson Pose, “Series Finale,” Steven Canals The Crown, “Fairytale,” Benjamin Caron The Crown, “War,” Jessica Hobbs PREDICTED WINNER: The Handmaid’s Tale, “The Wilderness,” Liz Garbus The Mandalorian, “Chapter 9: The Marshal,” Jon Favreau
There’s a strong correlation between this category and the best-drama-series Emmy, which should give the edge to drama front-runner The Crown, and particularly the propulsive season four finale, “War.” But we’re spotting potential upsets in the beloved series finale for Pose and particularly the Handmaid’s Tale season four finale, “The Wilderness,” directed by Oscar-nominated documentarian Liz Garbus. Given how much The Handmaid’s Tale outperformed expectations in the nominations, we suspect this might be a place for the show to surprise again. —Katey Rich
WRITING FOR A DRAMA SERIES
Lovecraft Country, “Sundown,” Misha Green Pose, “Series Finale,” Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk, Steven Canals, Janet Mock, Our Lady J The Boys, “What I Know,” Rebecca Sonnenshine PREDICTED WINNER: The Crown, “War,” Peter Morgan The Handmaid’s Tale, “Home,” Yahlin Chang The Mandalorian, “Chapter 13: The Jedi,” Dave Filoni The Mandalorian, “Chapter 16: The Rescue,” Jon Favreau
Oddly enough, The Crown has never won this category, despite the dense history layered into each episode, which we suspect should give series creator Peter Morgan an edge here. For potential upsets keep an eye on Pose and the long list of heavy hitter credited writers; this is, after all, the category where Friday Night Lights and The Americans finally won after years of being overlooked. Pose is surging in Emmy attention for its final season, and you never know just how far that affection might go. —Katey Rich

'#i am so upset at tht about this lol #(mostly cos yeah reality is that. but i'm watchign fiction dudes. gimme some character journeys. gimme development. gimme hope. #this flatline they have serena on just isn't good storytelling. straight up.)' -- i agree. & the idea i hate the most is that moss & the tht crew might have had a boner over whitford joining them & decided to give him what could have been serena's arc. the architect of the damn colonies can turn out decent but serena can't. GOT IT
“the architect of the damn colonies can turn out decent but serena can’t. GOT IT”
this is probably what drives me the most mad about the choices they made for characters in s3. lawrence literally–unequivocally and by his own admission as well as multiple other characters–created THE FUCKING COLONIES: prison labour camps where ONLY women go to suffer excruciating pain and rot from disease and DIE. he also, unarguably and explicitly, created THE ENTIRE ECONOMIC SYSTEM on which gilead relies on for its propagation and survival.
without HIM, gilead would NOT exist. and this isn’t a little thing. it’s like, it literally would have fallen apart without his massive contribution. (sure, maybe they would have found another genius economist with a penchant for brutal misogyny but as it stands, they didn’t have one. and HE STILL helps gilead survive.)
but uwu, he makes jokes and doesn’t do the ceremony and loves his wife so WHAT A GREAT GUY! LET’S GIVE HIM A RELUCTANT REDEMPTION ARC!!!!
i fucking loathe him. and he was shown multiple times even in s3 what he thinks of ALL women, and that isn’t fucking much. he’s gross. “i love my wife” YEAH sure buddy. fuck you. if you truly loved her, you wouldn’t have created an entire system where she gets fucked right over to the point she kills herself. cool beans, dude.
s3 was all about lawrence and june being reluctant allies and her working her dumbass moves on him, and that bullshit handholding at the funeral FOR THE WIFE THAT JUNE BASICALLY KILLED??? please just let me vomit in my mouth a bit.
he is not a good guy. he is not a nice guy. he does not like women. he does not care about them. he’s a pathetic little misogynist that she looks out for himself. but omg look how conflicted he is about the ceremony!!! UWU PRECIOUS BEAN, TOO PURE FOR THIS HORRIBLE WORLD!!
it’s like fandom/the showrunners are just salivating over male characters to woobiefy.
meanwhile MEANWHILE there’s a female character, the second most developed character on the entire show with the second most amount of screentime (prior to mid s3 anyway) and already a foil to june and “villain”esque character theoretically capable of change, but hey, no. let’s ignore the entire trajectory serena was on for the latter half of s2. let’s even ignore early s3 and all that set up. let’s just FUCKING FLATLINE her and make her 100% obsessed with a baby. it’s not like that storyline was already wrapped up in s2 and she’d moved on by early s3.
all so june could have some ~exciting plot of winning over lawrence and oooooh look it’s bradley whitford. what a great guy. he’s so funnieeeee and nice.
it really does feel like they aborted serena’s arc for the sake of inserting whitford into what should have been serena’s journey of gradually coming to terms with her involvement in gilead, her own overwhelming guilt about her involvement (which i would like to point out is LESS than lawrence’s contributions. just so we’re all on the same page). and i know miller has said he “doesn’t believe in redemption arcs” (bullshit. that’s pure bullshit. they exist whether you believe in them or not, for one thing.) but lawrence’s character has been doing EXACTLY that. and all the fandom is frothing about how amazing he is blah blah blah. fucking miss me with that. i will NEVER root for a man who has done that to women and is a KEY player in gilead. he didn’t just help invent it, he CURRENTLY still sustains it. he seemed to have little concern for ANYBODY even at the beginning of s3. yet still he’s a hero. (at least the character is like “oooh i’m not a hero” which kinda sounded totally insincere to me. the same way people throw pity parties for themselves.)
but god forbid a problematic female character portrayed by a fantastic (but lesser known) actress gets the same generosity. and what’s even crazier is that the audience was generally in favor and excited about serena joining june in the resistance prior to s3, and even in the beginning episodes of s3. based on social media anyway.
but no……….
i just….
it infuriates me how they chose to give what could have been a decent character arc for serena to lawrence instead (and to take that from yvonne and hand it over to whitford cos he’s just so great. rolling my eyes so hard.). and everyone is just like “yasss king! we love you!! what great guy for saving those kids!!! yay redemption for lawrence! i love brad whitford so amazing give him an emmy!!!”
i get they need to keep serena around and in some sort of conflict for june.
actually no. i don’t get it. i don’t think it’s necessary at this point to have a female adversary of that degree for june. i think she could easily be a complicated/conflicted ally, or at least not a direct enemy of june’s. the SYSTEM is evil enough and produces enough conflict on its own. june no longer needs the personification of it and neither do we. just… ugh. stagnating the MOST complex character on the show (fight me. serena as a character was more complex and dynamic than june.) for the sake of throwing her in some stupid sideplot that had nothing to do with the protagonist, and made her entire story arc stall into a dead stop was a dumbass fucking move. the whole fred thing dragged her the fuck down cos there was zero acknowledgement or exploration of the actual dynamic of the domestic abuse cycle which was PLAINLY visible in early s3. instead it was just NICHOLEEEEEE!!!!! GIVE ME BABBY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! MUST HAVE BABBY!!!!!!!!!! every single character motivation serena had in s3 was a fucking sexist trope about women and baby fever. (not that they wrote june much better but this rant is about the shit they pulled with serena.)
there is no depth to any conflict anymore. and what drives me even crazier is that the few scenes with june and serena are still 100 times more interesting because of the pre-existing chemistry and dynamic they still have. but instead we’ve just got the same fucking scene of june/lawrence over and over for 8 episodes. “ooh is he a friend or foe? oh i will manipulate him! he is an ally! oh maybe he’s a foe, or friend, or foe, or friend?! who cares!! look how he lubs childrens! uwu!!”
they seem absolutely intent on keeping serena a villain, to the point of total irrationality. and the only way to do that is strip her character of any nuance and give her a singular and stupid motivation and pair that with a really boring and flat subplot. cos, organically, the character WOULD develop and learn and change, but since they’re fucking obsessed with not giving her anything even resembling “redemption” for some bullshit reason, they’ve thrown her entire narrative arc under the bus and just left her there.
and people wonder why i have no interest in s4. it’s cos of this shit. why the fuck would i be interested in watching yet another season of serena doing fuck all? (ooh a trial? BORING and guaranteed to make no rational sense. back to gilead? what for?! they’re never going to let her change/grow anyway!)… and june being painted as some saint and saviour, despite being not that much better anymore. and Lawrence being lauded as a goddamn hero for doing the very fucking bare minimum for no real discernible reason we’ve seen other than june’s oh so amazing ~wiles. like please.
i can’t stand june anymore. i fucking loathe lawrence (to me, he’s just nick 2.0). i don’t care about fred. moira and emily who? and am butthurt about what they’ve done to serena’s character journey (and can’t see that changing if miller, moss, & co. are so itnent on keeping her “evil”). so s4 doesn’t seem that fun to me.
and the fact everyone seems to have a hard on for whitford, including cast and crew just makes me angry. sure, give this dude all the good shit. take it away from the amazing female actors and just give it to him. why not? THT is male-run anyway and IT SHOWS. he should have been a minor character, not the focus next to june. (don’t even get me started on how fiennes gets second billing in the credits before yvonne cos i am so livid every single time i see taht.)
whatever, THT. whatever. bye. ugh.
wow anyway that was a rant i didn’t expect to make. thanks anon for drawing that out. i think i’ve been sitting on it a while lol.
i have a lot of rage.

2020 Emmy Award Predictions
Let’s call it half wishful thinking, half educated guess.
Drama Series
“Better Call Saul” (AMC) “The Crown” (Netflix) “The Handmaid’s Tale” (Hulu) “Killing Eve” (BBC America/AMC) “The Mandalorian” (Disney Plus) “Ozark” (Netflix) “Stranger Things” (Netflix) “Succession” (HBO)
Would not be surprised by “Succession” winning here, but “Ozark” has been building toward this win.
Comedy Series
“Curb Your Enthusiasm” (HBO) “Dead to Me” (Netflix) “The Good Place” (NBC) “Insecure” (HBO) “The Kominsky Method” (Netflix) “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” (Amazon Prime Video) “Schitt’s Creek” (Pop TV) “What We Do in the Shadows” (FX)
Would feel stronger about this had the series won something last year, but since “Modern Family” misses out on a nomination here, have to go with still buzzy “Schitt’s Creek” for swan song victory as it closed out a terrific run.
Limited Series
“Little Fires Everywhere” (Hulu) “Mrs. America” (Hulu) “Unbelievable” (Netflix) “Unorthodox” (Netflix) “Watchmen” (HBO)
Truly not a weak link in this category. Going with “Watchmen” as a toss up since it is the most unique series in this group.
Lead Actor in a Drama Series
Jason Bateman (“Ozark”) Sterling K. Brown (“This Is Us”) Steve Carell (“The Morning Show”) Brian Cox (“Succession”) Billy Porter (“Pose”) Jeremy Strong (“Succession”)
Carrell honestly feels more like a Supporting Actor in “The Morning Show” and I don’t think he’ll end his long overdue Emmy drought this year. Jeremy Strong seems like a heater, but I’m sticking with “Ozark” being a juggernaut this year as Bateman picks up his first acting Emmy.
Lead Actress in a Drama Series
Jennifer Aniston (“The Morning Show”) Olivia Colman (“The Crown”) Jodie Comer (“Killing Eve”) Laura Linney (“Ozark”) Sandra Oh (“Killing Eve”) Zendaya (“Euphoria”)
Anniston won a SAG award earlier this year, a surprise to many. Keeps her in contention, but I feel like even with all the quality in this category and past winners Comer and Oh still around that it’s “Ozark” and Laura Linney’s time to shine.
Lead Actor in a Comedy Series
Anthony Anderson (“Black-ish”) Don Cheadle (“Black Monday”) Ted Danson (“The Good Place”) Michael Douglas (“The Kominsky Method”) Eugene Levy (“Schitt’s Creek”) Ramy Youssef (“Ramy”)
A lot of legends and one up & comer. Of the Legends I feel the best about Eugene Levy and “Schitt’s Creek” having a great night overall. Douglas could play spoiler.
Lead Actress in a Comedy Series
Christina Applegate (“Dead to Me”) Rachel Brosnahan (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”) Linda Cardellini (“Dead to Me”) Catherine O’Hara (“Schitt’s Creek”) Issa Rae (“Insecure”) Tracee Ellis Ross (“Black-ish”)
Going with my heart here and “Schitt’s Creek” again. O’Hara has been pitch perfect for 6 seasons. But I could honestly see any of these incredible women win here.  Most wide-open field of the night.
Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie
Jeremy Irons (“Watchmen”) Hugh Jackman (“Bad Education”) Paul Mescal (“Normal People”) Jeremy Pope (“Hollywood”) Mark Ruffalo (“I Know This Much Is True”)
Mark Ruffalo does the heaviest lifting in this category, but his series was not nominated and the reception seemed tepid outside of praise for his performance. Hugh Jackman shines in the breeziest but still brilliant “Bad Education”. Feels like his to win.
Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie
Cate Blanchett (“Mrs. America”) Shira Haas (“Unorthodox”) Regina King (“Watchmen”) Octavia Spencer (“Self Made”) Kerry Washington (“Little Fires Everywhere”)
Hard to pick against Blanchett in anything. Washington never won for “Scandal” and perhaps the Emmys try to make up for it here, but my money’s on Queen Cate.
Supporting Actor in a Drama Series
Giancarlo Esposito (“Better Call Saul”) Bradley Whitford (“The Handmaid’s Tale”) Billy Crudup (“The Morning Show”) Mark Duplass (“The Morning Show”) Nicholas Braun (“Succession”) Kieran Culkin (“Succession”) Matthew Macfadyen (“Succession”) Jeffrey Wright (“Westworld”)
The “Succession” trio and “Morning Show” duo probably cancel each other out, although I’d personally vote for Crudup in what I think is a perfect distillation of what he does best. Past winner Whitford is just happy to be back in the race, as is Wright; but Esposito is a fan and critic favorite and here they reward him where they missed out on doing so during Breaking Bad’s initial run.
Supporting Actress in a Drama Series
Laura Dern (“Big Little Lies”) Meryl Streep (“Big Little Lies”) Helena Bonham Carter (“The Crown”) Samira Wiley (“The Handmaid’s Tale”) Fiona Shaw (“Killing Eve”) Julia Garner (“Ozark”) Sarah Snook (“Succession”) Thandie Newton (“Westworld”)
With heavyweights like Dern, Streep, Bonham Carter and Newton it’s strange to say I think Garner is all but guaranteed a second consecutive victory here. She is just that good and perhaps anchors “Ozark” even more than the leads.
Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series
Andre Braugher (“Brooklyn Nine-Nine”) William Jackson Harper (“The Good Place”) Alan Arkin (“The Kominsky Method”) Sterling K. Brown (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”) Tony Shalhoub (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”) Mahershala Ali (“Ramy”) Kenan Thompson (“Saturday Night Live”) Dan Levy (“Schitt’s Creek”)
Dan Levy has been the beating heart and engine behind “Schitt’s Creek”, have to keep with my prediction of an unprecedented night for that show and his family. Tony Shalhoub as always is dangerous and could easily take another trophy again this year.
Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series
Betty Gilpin (“GLOW”) D’Arcy Carden (“The Good Place”) Yvonne Orji (“Insecure”) Alex Borstein (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”) Marin Hinkle (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”) Kate McKinnon (“Saturday Night Live”) Cecily Strong (“Saturday Night Live”) Annie Murphy (“Schitt’s Creek”)
Just keep repeating that “Schitt’s Creek” sweep mantra. Would not be an unwarranted win by any means, Murphy has been outstanding from day one on that series. Borstein is a multiple winner here and is always a threat. Gilpin is great, but feels more like a Lead role on GLOW.
Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie
Dylan McDermott (“Hollywood”) Jim Parsons (“Hollywood”) Tituss Burgess (“Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt: Kimmy vs. the Reverend”) Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (“Watchmen”) Jovan Adepo (“Watchmen”) Louis Gossett Jr. (“Watchmen”)
Probably the oddest group of the night. Have to go with the only breakout star here with Yahya Abdul-Mateen II.
Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or Movie
Holland Taylor (“Hollywood”) Uzo Aduba (“Mrs. America”) Margo Martindale (“Mrs. America”) Tracey Ullman (“Mrs. America”) Toni Collette (“Unbelievable”) Jean Smart (“Watchmen”)
A sentimental vote for Holland Taylor doesn’t seem crazy, but much like Cate Blanchett it is difficult to go against Toni Collette’s seemingly endless stream of excellent work, and here is she the only nominee from “Unbelievable” and its trio of wonderful actresses.
Reality Competition
“The Masked Singer” (FOX) “Nailed It” (Netflix) “RuPaul’s Drag Race” (VH1) “Top Chef” (Bravo) “The Voice” (NBC)
I am out of my element here, going with Drag Race because it seems ubiquitous. Only series here I actually watch is Nailed It, would be fun if that won but seems unlikely.
Variety Sketch Series
“A Black Lady Sketch Show” (HBO) “Drunk History” (Comedy Central) “Saturday Night Live” (NBC)
Just not enough competition to beat NBC’s long time workhorse, even if it didn’t have a particularly strong season, save for exceptions like Eddie Murphy’s nominated episode.
Variety Talk Series
“Daily Show with Trevor Noah” (Comedy Central) “Full Frontal with Samantha Bee” (TBS) “Jimmy Kimmel Live” (ABC) “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” (HBO) “Late Show with Stephen Colbert” (CBS)
Time for the boys club to be broken up. Sam Bee is every bit as funny, smart, and able to reach an emotional depth and honesty that most of her fellow nominees struggle with.

It’s hard to believe but award season has come around once again. Though the Primetime Emmys are not handed out until next Sunday, September 22, the Creative Arts awards were handed out this past weekend and a number of our favourite shows went away with some new hardware.
Taking place at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, the Creative Arts Emmys were presented over two nights. The first night (Saturday) included awards for variety special, animated program, and documentaries. Some of the big winners of Night 1 were the Queer Eye Fab 5 taking home four awards (Structured reality program, casting, directing and picture editing), RuPaul’s Drag Race with three wins (host for a reality or competition program, costumes and hairstyling) and Fosse/Verdon and Hannah Gadsby, Nanette each taking out an Emmy for music direction and writing for a variety special, respectively. The big winner of the night was National Geographic’s Free Solo – the American documentary won all seven of its nominated categories on the first night.
Despite the divisive eighth and final season, the second night (Sunday) was dominated by HBO’s Game of Thrones. The drama took home ten technical awards. Could this be a prelude for more success next week? The other big winners from Night 2 were HBO’s limited series Chernobyl and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, both walking away with seven wins. The Handmaid’s Tale was the recipient of three awards, including Bradley Whitford and Cherry Jones for Outstanding Guest Actor and Actress in a Drama Series, Fosse/Verdon picked up another two Emmys taking its weekend total to three, and Fleabag won in two categories.
The Creative Arts Emmys will air on FXX on Saturday September 21 at 8/7c.
