I don’t know how much hope I have in boycotts. They can be important, they can have an impact, and it’s also frustrating and exhausting to argue and debate any given situation and the “who does this really hurt” and “my love for X thing is bigger than its owner/creator/whoever” and all the rest. I generally don’t even approach boycotting something as a boycott; it mostly comes down to, “How gross do I feel about my money going to X thing and how much difference does it make?”
And yes, capitalism is messy. Yes, it sucks. Yes, I’m a part of it all, too.
In some things being debated online right now—the Antisemitic Trashfire Wizarding Game, or going to see the Flash movie, or the New York Times doubling down on their right to be transphobic garbage—I see a pretty clear common factor.
Movie studios, media companies, and JK specifically will always interpret your money as approval. Any other criticism, caveat, harsh review, or dank meme is ultimately meaningless to them. If you pay up, they have no reason to change.
And no, I don’t think piracy fixes things. Certainly not when it comes to those big companies. You’re still showing your interest, still showing there’s a market for what they offer, and boosting their visibility for people who will pay up.
Their only incentive for change comes from people walking away.
